I was sitting in one of the boxes during this performance and during the title song, near the end when the Phantom reaches up to Christine's face (her back is to the proscenium), it looked like Ted wiped a tear from Julia's cheek. Where I was in the box gave a different angle view that I don't think others would have seen. She teared up during that song, Think of Me, MOTN and again at the end of Wishing. The audience jumped to its feet in applause and she was trying to hold it back but finally gave in and bent forward with her face in her hands sobbing. It was a raw, beautiful shared moment between her and the fans/phans. The show basically came to a stop for a little over a minute. Another thing: The cast knew how much Ted wished to go on one last time and wanted it for him and so the other understudies did not wish to go on again. They wanted to get to enjoy the rest of the shows in their usual tracks.
Ted has such a nuanced performance. He was the first Phantom I saw live in 2001and remains one of my top favorites in the role that I've seen live (second to Hugh Panaro). I saw the show in March this year and was hoping so much that i would be able to see him as The Phantom, but it wasnt in the cards. I did get to see Julie and she was just sublime. I ugly cried all during WYWSHA. So good! Her final lair was beautiful. This audio is magical! Thank you for posting and sharing!
Saw him on Broadway (not this performance.) Absolutely wonderful isn't even enough to describe how excellent he did. One of the best experiences of my life. Thank you, Ted Keegan, for being a huge part of the reason.
Ben had so many great understudies. I can’t help but point out how many performances his understudies performed. A lot! Also, Ted was 61 and still drilled the role…impressive.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I was in the audience for this incredible performance, and feel so lucky to have seen the trio of Ted, Julia, and John as my first and last time seeing Hal Prince's original production on Broadway!
Thank you SOOOO much for sharing this. I can't tell you how happy it made me to know that Ted (one of my all time favorite Phantoms) got to perform the show's final matinee in the title role. What a historical performance.
The ultimate send off for a TRUE legend! A worthy addition to the Phantom's legacy of brilliant performers.😊
Hearing the crying in the background at the end of the final lair and hearing Teds voice for the last time definitely gave me the feels

Ted was my Very First Phantom during the US TOUR July 5, 2001.

Well Ben got super sick during the last few months, and was forced to step out, his voice was actively breaking!
i glad TEd and Larid closed the show.
i just wish it was Juila and Laird. That would be amazing for the last show on 04/16/23. I do believe they gave the best Phantom send-off.

I’m a huge fan of Ted. Thanks so much for this!

How old is Mr. Keegan?! I read 61?!
That’s correct! I believe he is the oldest actor to have played the role in New York
