We all appreciate singers, dancers and athletes, yet people in musical theatre are all three at once and often don't get the recognition they deserve. The skill, strength and stamina here is amazing to keep up this level of performance for three hours and to do it at least once a day.

“Triple threats” are rare; most musical theatre performers focus primarily on two of the three skills (singing, dancing and acting), which is hard enough.

People, you can say what you want about the 2019 film, but don't judge _Cats_ until you've seen a stage production or this filmed stage show. This production is way better than the 2019 film, and you should really give it a chance before you decide to hate _Cats_ and everything associated with it.

EVERYONE please give this a watch a keep an open mind. Do not associate this with that movie. Cats is an amazing broadway musical. There is a reason why it doesnt work as a film. The true essence of the musical is capturing the beauty and mystique of cats. Unlike other musicals, Cats barely has a plot, because it is an experience, like a giving us a glance into the world of the jellicle cats. The choreography, music, makeup, backdrop and everything works so well together. Imagine jumping around doing crazy advanced choreography and singing at the same time, these actors are incredible. Give this a watch, it is one of the longest-running shows for a reason.

Betty was amazing. Standing O at intermission! I saw it one and a half times because the night A Chorus Line became the longest running show on Broadway, we stood on the street and watched the stars go into the Shubert Theatre for the show, then second-acted Cats at the Winter Garden. After the show, we waited by the stage door because we knew several of the dancers would be hustling out to get to the Shubert for the big finale of One. We literally chased them down the street, looking like crazed fans, I'm sure. But hey, I was 18. That's what you do when you're young, dumb, and starstruck. haha

The original choreography is just amazing. I'm so mad they got the choreographer from Hamilton to change things andhe added hip hop style. It worked for Hamilton just fine. But not for a show like this. There was no need to change anything in the show but ALW did. Gillian Lynn's choreography will always be the best.

I'm seeing a lot of comments saying "how did I not know this is on youtube??" or something along those lines.
The reason you didn't know, is because it wasn't. This premiered in 2020 as a live video, and was posted I think for 48 hours. It was a feature this channel was doing during COVID, posting full length ALW musicals for people to enjoy. But now for some reason, they're reposting them. First Phantom, now CATS. They will likely also repost Joseph and any other musicals they showed during that time. I'm guessing they're posting these because Phantom leaving Broadway means there's no more ALW musicals on Broadway, so sharing the recordings won't deter people from going.
TL. DR; They reposted the livestreams from 2020 because now people won't stop going because they have the online version.

Man, this is nostalgic... I still love this musical immensely I see.
The movie adaption aside, this musical is such a treat to watch every time. People complain that it doesn't have a plot but not only did that not ever really bother me even as child, but I think that that is also not true in the end. Sure it's not some grand adventure or an easily digestable or clear cut story, but it isn't supposed to be. And it isn't trying to. It's a story of cats meeting up for a special night and, realising they have guests (audience or just YOU), tell about themselves and share stories of their group's members, as well as speculate who of them will "win the price" tonight. They didn't come out tonight to have some adventure: they came to meet each other, hang out, see who gets a new life this year or all the like. There are plot elements keeping it together past one performance, such as things surrounding Grisabella, Macavity or the whole heavy side layer business. And even if that's not enough for you, just the coreography and the music are amazing.
More than any story though, I've always loved Cats for managing to introduce us to so many characters with no dialogue. Even if they don't have their on number, you can learn so much about each cat by looking at expressions, body language and coreography. Looking past the front row can even give you rare little treats of different personalities and relationships too. All of these cats are characters, even if they don't sing a solo, and being able to bring that up in a performance breathes so much light in the whole show. The performers, the directors and the whole team did amazing there and it is inspiring to witness.

  • @runrenegade7430

*For anyone who doesn't understand the plot of this movie*
Jellicle cats from what i understand are sort of a royal cat club, although they seem to accept pretty much anyone? When they describe what a Jellicle cat is, it sounds like almost every cat ever.
The main point of the plot is they're preparing for and then going to the Jellicle Ball. This is an annual full moon ball they have where their leader chooses a cat to be reborn (because of the 9 lives myth)
It takes a while to introduce a few specific Jellicles and a non-Jellicle named Grizabella. She's an old show-girl type cat who's life is in shambles, she's real sad and the other cats are mean to her.
So the ball happens, dance dance dance, Grizabella again, another old and pitiful cat named Gus love him, more singing.
Then there's a villain cat named Macavity. He bad. He crashes the ball and kidnaps Old Deuteronomy because why not. Munkustrap fights Macavity and hurts him pretty badly it seems. Mr Mistoffelees uses magic to poof Deuteronomy back.
Deuteronomy chooses Grizabella to be reborn and she's happy. That's pretty much it.
    You're welcome.
Edit: I guess Macavity kidnaps Deuteronomy because he's angry about not being a Jellicle (he probably was at some point but got banished for being horrible) and he can never be chosen to go to Heaviside

I saw the 2019 movie before this version, and I think a huge component of why this works and the movie didn't is because the actors seem to be genuinely happy to be there? It shows through in their movements, their faces, the little character details. The CGI movie looks more like every character is trapped in a fur-lined purgatory that they have to pretend to like singing and dancing to escape.

I've always seen Cats as a celebration of culture. With the idea of 'tribes' and the 'heaviside layer', expression through dance, etc. Cultural celebration is something we need now more than ever. There's always been a subtle beauty to Cats that I can never quite pinpoint. An 'ineffability'.

My parents got me this versions VHS of Cats when I was a young child and I DESTROYED IT. I watched it everyday, learned all the songs and dances. This performance may be the first thing I was truly obsessed with from the creative world. This performance is the reason why I refuse to watch that garbage movie they tried to put out. I just finished watching the live premiere and the nostalgia was beyond anything Ive experienced in a while.
I sang, I danced, I smiled, I cried. Thank you so much for giving this to us.
