There are however important differences in depreciation trends between the different generations, and perhaps more important, also within each generation.

    If you are a value conscious buyer, I would avoid the cars from the latest model years such as 2023 and 2024. Depreciation trends are relatively steep and the cars are highly sensitive to mileage. If you are shopping for an ND generation, I would look at the cars that are a few years old.
    In the NC and NB generation, this are flattening out and the differences between these are much smaller. Both generations are still depreciating, but due to similar price levels and mileage sensitivity, the absolute loss per year is fairly similar.
    The NA generation in turn should be seen separate from the rest. The price trend is clearly different as prices are trending up. Price variability is high though and low mileage examples in pristine condition demand significant premiums.

      Really nice to see the MX5 in there. I think you could also do an average cost per mile driven and break down the ownership cost estimate if you wanted to have more contetn in the videos. Then you could estimate how much will it cost you to buy say 2018 MX-5 and drive 10k/yr vs a Boxster or even look at the past data and say this is how much it would have cost you for context.

      Great car. I had an 04 AP2 I bought in 2010 for $13.5k and sold for $17k in 2017. I did put about $2k into it cosmetically. It had 36k when I bought it and 59.5k when I sold it.

    The Toyota MR2 would be a good one to see. No new models to factor in like the Miata, but multiple generations unlike the S2000.

    If you keep buying used cars, you will reliably kill the market for manual shifting cars. This is especially true for low volume cars like MX5

    Awesome as always, Harald, with the exception of one quote: 4:00 “I believe the updates over the years are relatively minor [referring to the ND Miata]”
    The ND1 -> ND2 updates are one of the more significant mid-cycle updates of any sports cars in recent history.

    2019 Miata ND2 RF G-184 Top Revolution owner here.
    5 years with no issues (not only recalls) even if I had many track-days etc.
    I can sell it for the same money I bought it. But that is definitely not for free, because the inflation ate in the value of money.
    Anyhow, Miata Is Always The Answer.

    I have a theory that Miata prices will continue lower as the ND2s push down the prices of NC2s and subsequently the NBs and NAs. And as more ND2s come on the used market the other Miata prices will go down until the next gen shows up and depending on the how the next gen turns out will determine when prices will rise again. Is my theory at least.

    I bought a stock 10k '04 Miata LS manual with 68,400 miles a month ago. I put down 8k with 2k financed at 5% through my credit union to build my credit a bit. It's a chick magnet 😅 and it's great on gas as well, it's turning into my daily over my all motor modded '98 Civic.

    The 986 is the true steal nowadays. S2000 level speed and miata price. And half of what it cost for an MR2. Don`t play that cliche reliability card here! 25 yr old cars all gonna have problems..

      Well I mostly agree to get a 986 today (longtime S2000 owner here) but what you call cliche is statistical significance. It's more accurate to say the trouble a 986 might give you is worth the risk - you buy a car with good records and low-average miles and chances are it won't break your heart by mechanically totaling itself. It would be a mistake to buy a Japanese roadster if your heart is stirred by a P-car.

      ​@@6mtzhp55 After continuous track useage on my 97 boxster for 3 years straight, it never let me down. Compared to the 3 miatas I had, the boxster maintenance is slightly (+20%) more expensive to own, but it is very manageable. The Japanese roadster are awesome cars, before they got overhyped... The scene of a naturally aspirated MR2 with 3 different panel colours on the front and rust bubbling rear fender plus a katana shifter costs the same as a
