  • So as the streetcar/slow car stuff gains more and more traction, everyone is doing upgrades. Billy wants to get everything he can out of this 302 and we're probably going to find it's breaking point eventually. But that's the fun part!
    Billy acquired a set of aluminum trick flow heads, and a stage 2 trick flow camshaft. After the upgrades, he's hoping to get close to 400 HP NA. Then, if he still needs to... he will throw the inevitable 200 shot at it. If the 302 wasn't already hating it's life... it's gonna hate it's life now!

    Billy, Tommy, Rob & Kenny, love to see you four razzing each other! Billy & Tommy you two remind me of my old brother Big Al, when we were younger he kicked my butt all over the place, but we became best of friend's for a few decades. He helped us pit, tune pull engines etc! Cherish every minute you two have with one another! I miss him dearly. God bless! ✌

    Love watching this particular builds progress. Don’t get me wrong I’m a Chevy guy to the bone, but I’m putting a 408 SBF in my Ranger that I bought from my dad when I was 15 which is something we wanted to do together. Unfortunately he passed from cancer before we could do it so now it’s mine and my kids project. Love your content and the family dynamic! SRC FTW!!!!

      I'm a checy guy too but if your 408 sbf is anything like the one in my cousins car it's going to be strong! His is around 13:1 with 730 lift cam and running on methanol now. But it was strong on gas before he switched it.

    I respect you wrenching on/improving that 302 instead of just buying a crate motor. Hits home with a lot of us that don't have the coin to replace a stock motor. Will be interesting to see how much it improves coming up. Real nice video guys.

      I got 87 hatch back g. t 40 head Edelbrock intake 600 c. f. m carb basically a cobra top end headers in a h pipe I ran 11.23 @129 quarter mile all motor t/5 spun 1n 2 not a Ford guy but I fall in love with this hatch back

    If the new Trick Flows are like they were back in the day, the valves are raised .200 in the head to give ya plenty of piston to valve clearance and require a longer pushrod. In addition, if the rear torque boxes haven't yet been reinforced I would highly recommend it. Kits are cheap, install is no biggie and the car is so clean I'd hate to see the boxes ripped apart. Thanks for the content.

      Well it's technically not better than an LS swap it's just less common... When I actually wanted to go fast with my fox body I had to ditch the Ford engine too it's way too expensive to go fast with a Ford then an LS once you're making over 1,200 wheel hell even 750 wheel it's so much smarter and more " affordable"to just go to LS route plus there's parts readily available everywhere and anywhere used and new I couldn't get rid of the ford headaches fast enough.. if I had as much disposable income as Billy though I'd probably have stuck with a Ford of some type

      @@freedomfox8183 with a dart block and some experience you can build a 1000+ horsepower small block ford easily and relatively cheaply. That is not the point of this build. That small block will make a great street machine out of that fox. And it won’t be a complete eye sore with an LS swap. It’s a real underdog and I’m here for it.

    Guys so funny picking on each other. Billy and Tommy remind me so much of me and my younger brother. The Ford versus Chevy stuff been going on forever. Back when I was racing at Norwalk and Dragway 42 there were always more Chevys than Ford's, Chevy allowed aftermarket companies to make parts for their motors and Ford didn't because they made their own and it was just alot more expensive to build a Ford. Virtually nobody runs Factor heads and intake from Chevy, always aftermarket. That said when Ford was sponsoring factory racers they dominated drag racing and trans am running Ford factory high performance parts, even though they were vastly outnumbered. Bob Glidden owned pro-stock for more than a decade beating the best that Chevy and Mopar threw at him. Glad there are Chevy guys, Ford's are expensive enough even with the competition.     People that laugh at Ford motors remember this. The only motor in history that has run in stock configuration from an everyday street driver to a 3500 hp Promod is the Ford mod motor. It has been 5.88@250 in a stock block and a 5.67@265 in a Coyote MMR block.

    The H.O. 5.0 has the same firing order as a 351 Windsor. 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Twisted Wedges heads move the valves closer to the center of the bore, which in tern lets you run a larger intake valve, any other 2.02 in line head would’ve needed the pistons flycut. A true 86 5.0 would’ve had a completely flat top piston with no valve reliefs at all. The Mustangs had forged pistons by TRW and a metric ring pack. Great job, you’ll really like it much better now.

    It should be in the 370hp range now. I run a Dyno in Mooresville, NC and with a similar combo, they usually run 325-345 at the wheels (with a t5). It's gonna be fun as hell on a 150+ shot

      It's true the t5's don't Rob very much power. On an engine dyno I'm feeling it would be around 370. finely tuned,400 almost and if I built something I'd shoot for a Chevy but nothing sounds better than a an h pipe 5.0 with a good Cam and intake

      @@johnsheetz6639 maybe . Not sure till you put it on the Dyno. It's a street car so it doesn't really matter. The old man will help get the most out it as far as tuning. I can guarantee it will be rowdy with a T5/4.10s on spray. I'm a Chevy guy but the Malibu will have to spray 200 on the hit to beat him. The mustang was less than 2 lengths behind the Malibu before the heads and cam swap. It's gonna be interesting over the next few weeks. Kenny's Camaro is gonna be in the mix too.

    Glad to see Big Rob working with the guys hope he is feeling better, and Billy hit the ford cam thing right on the head. There was B,E, F,X, and Z and at the time B was a good daily cam in a nice power increase, and Z was a all out racer cam that people used for track cars, Like Billy said these are all outdated cam profiles from the mid 80s.

    i would have gone with the 190 11r's myself. just dynoed a car on my channel that made 380 to the tire through a auto with those heads and a smaller camshaft. but should still be a improvement over the old set up. love watching you beat the hell out of that little sbf.

      Yea, the trickflow 170s won't be all that much better then those aluminum GT40s it had on it. Probably another reason why he didn't got 11Rs is you gotta run aftermarket pistons most of the time

    I hope y'all put the pin in the cam? Now it needs a turbo blow through set up like the truck on about 15-20 lbs. I homemade a turbo hot side with a T6 used Semi truck turbo on a stock Explorer 302 makes 20 lbs and it's still alive! That block splits at 500 HP is BS.

    Dang Kenny is mighty confident in the Duck-Shooting Camaro! I guess this race will take place close to the house, so the Camaro doesn't overheat.. I'm kidding, I'm kidding.. Sorta lol
    That's not the original engine. Pre-87 engines had no valve reliefs. That's good though, 87+ is definitely preferable!!

    Chevy guy to the bone, but Monday I bought a one owner 98 Explorer 2 door 2 WD for my next project. It has the 8.8 rear with 373 gears like the Mustang. Saving for a motor now, but it still runs great for a 25 year old small SUV. I enjoy the build videos more than the track drags. Hope both of you do well. Just finished and sold my 93 Chevy 1500 . Last drag build was a 96 S10 with a 434. I can relate.

    Tommy is one hell of a wheel man making that falcon dance all the way down the strip!!! You both are great drivers in my opinion and both on that top level. Now I don't know if you'll be able to make that 302 out run the camaro or Malibu without more cubic inches 🤣🤣🤣 or a big ass shot of nitrious and Kenny's camaro is 3200 that's what mine is and it's identical to Kenny's

      Fox Body Recognition Guide, it lists the curb weight of an '85 hatchback as 3100 lbs. so 100 lbs aint nothing . if kenny cut that hacked up garbage exhaust off put some long tube headers to flowmasters it would be able to breath .

I used to be a Slowmaster fan for that “classic sound” myself until I graduated to the world of common sense 🤷🏻‍♂️ Flow-thru mufflers are the ONLY way to go to not only NOT lose power, but actually GAIN on hp & tq over open headers👌🏼You can literally what the average car lose 1/10th PER chamber on the track 🤦🏻‍♂️

      @@craigengelman4534 apparently, as most know, experience and measure -> each drop of 100 lbs gains 0.1 sec in the 1/4 ET
      That is more than a car length
      so, 100 lbs is significant in racing ET !!
      such Billy as a driver, also has a human weight advantage - so Billy has a minimum 50-75 lbs less from Kenny too
      ->didn't Billy weigh the car along with the compared weight of the Malibu with and without Bill[Sr.]-Dad ?

    I am 71 be 72 next month still got I first car a 62 Ford Fairlane 500. All I even owned is Ford retired Ford Senior Master Tech. Back in 70/80s my oldest brother and younger brothers had Chevy’s 3 each I had my 62 a 64 Fairlane wagon and a 57 Fairlane 500. Their Chevy’s were sitting and younger drove the wagon and older drove the 57.

    Those GT40X heads are actually a decent head over the stock E7s
    Compared to the TW 170s they flow fairly close, within 15cfm on the intake at .550 and 20cfm on the exhaust side.
    The biggest improvement will be the Stg 2 cam over what's in it.

      I was thinking the same thing. The X heads with some work to them will probably outflow the trick flows.

      Those trick flows are twisted wedge heads and those old ass stock heads will never out preform those trick flows

      thout he said explorer p heads . If you can get your hands on the special headers required to run them, the “P” variant is a viable upgrade over the OEM E7 heads. What Is The Difference Between GT40 Heads vs GT40P Heads? The GT40 & GT40P heads had a few noteworthy differences, the most important being the bump in compression

      @@nitroustommy3668 I've used the X heads, i've used the TW 170s... they're very close in performance. The biggest improvement is going to be from the camshaft, the Stg 2 Trickflow is a big improvement from the E cam, although i've been 9.80s @ 132mph with stock bottom end 302 with an E cam & TW170 in a 3200# Fox with 14 psi from a BW S475.
      Early 2000s I had a stick shift full interior 89 Fox street car with A/C. It had the original stock bottom end 302, GT40X heads, F cam & 125 shot of dry nitrous. That car went 11.20s 118 mph at the track on an old school BFG drag radial. Super fun car, the only thing that kept the T5 from grenading was not power shifting it, and a FRPP clutch that I had to change the disc a few times a year because it would start slipping on the 2-3 shift.

    Bill is soooo happy you sold him the Malibu. He cracks me up. If you get 600 hp out of that 302 you will split the block, then you can give up on the ferds and drop a LS in it. Sorry Billy, that ferd won`t keep up with Bill`s Malibu, he has that car on kill, but good luck. When Billy bought the Mustang and showed up with it at Bill`s garage, that was Bill`s WTF moment. Loved the cameo of Buford T. Justice.🤣 I do hope, even though I am Bowtie 4 life, that that 302 survives.

    I know you want to beat your dad. But you cannot make a FURD engine perform better than a Chevy! Been around nearly 60 years and since the 60’s and early 70’s MOPAR & CHEVY engines have not been surpassed by a FURD. Maybe for a tiny short time but FURD has always played catch up then and they still are playing catch up. CHEVY AND MOPAR WILL ALWAYS BE KING 👑 OF THE DRAG STRIP.

    You'll be just fine with that combo and 150 shot seen it run 11.0's 89 fox body 4.10 gear at 4500 feet above sea level so yea I think your Dad and ding dong are in for a little surprise. Not unless that stage 2 cam is terrible and I highly doubt it I was using a b303 alphabet cam as they call them none the less I beat so many 350 Chevy's in that thing back in the day and I got 20 miles per gallon as well I think even Tommy will learn a whole new appreciation just how good them sbf's run and the abuse they take already been proven.. I also get a kick out of the Ford Chevy rivalry especially since you can put sbc valves in sbf heads just cut the seats also the guy can't remember his name who designed the 260 283 327 etc sbc was the same fucking dude ford bought out and he designed the 260 289 302 etc so yea the engine designer was the same dude the rivalry is laughable once you do the research. But gotta give credit them old HIPO 289's way back in the day were quick and didn't blow up like the old small journal Chevy's did back then anyway there's good and bad in ea company also can put big block chevy valves in the FE 390 style ford engines also in the 351 Cleavland Heads saved myself money. Tell your Dad back in the 80's Bob glidden whooped on chevys with his all cast iron 351c engines and chevy had to destroke a 396 to even compete cause the cleavland head flowed like a big block chevy and the all cast chevy small blocks wouldn't even stay in his dust so yea Fords are no joke But in the end their a air pump and both Chevys and Fords are good in my book. I dislike mopar there engines look like a kindergarten kid designed them heavy and square they can run but cost more then ford or chevy so why build one but just my opinions cause like your Dad says us internet guys all dummys.       You have some interesting information - may be a little bit skewed
      still the 302 SBF from the BOSS days and later generations as this one are excellent
      Ford, GM [Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac], Mopar, TRD, Honda, Ferrari, MB, BMW, Lamborghini, etc. ALL manufacture, produce excellent performance engines - especially their racing versions
      Seems Your bias is baseless though - Clearly Richard Petty, that used Mopar for ALL of his multiple NASCR victories seems to prove Your ideas are incorrect, along with the many other Mopar engines used in multiple victories, championships, etc.
      Then go to drag racing - the proofs are clearly existing from the past through present - how many TP fuel engines are Mopar Hemi?!!
