    Shishito peppers are one of my favorite things to grow, and they're tied for first place with tomato sandwiches as my favorite food from the garden. They're so productive, especially when pruned properly, that they'll make any newbie feel like a great gardener! 😊
    I've not noticed a correlation between ripeness and spiciness. Every once in a while one has some heat, but it's been pretty rare, for whatever reason.

    I LOVE these peppers! I toss them in olive oil and roast in the oven with a little salt. Serve with ranch dressing.

    I just recently discovered these and bought a couple packets of 10 seeds today. I usually grow small, hot peppers (jalapenos, cayenne, habanero) but not the larger sweet bell peppers because my first couple attempts didn't grow well. I am really looking forward to these!

    I have six heavily loaded plants. They're awesome. I love them with a little red striping. I've tried them, roasted, had them raw, and stuffed a bunch of the bigger ones. Can these be pruned down to the nub like other peppers for over wintering?

    • @oxbowfarm5803
      @oxbowfarm5803  6 лет назад +1

      I'm sure they could be. Its not something I bother with, but pretty much all peppers are perennials. If you try it, let me know how it works!

      I'd also like to know how it goes. Was thinking about starting a few to grow indoors under the light, just for fun, to have something growing over the winter.

    Mallon salt flakes, lemon juice and zest, and good olive oil. If you want to get fancy a tiny bit of tomato paste and a couple tablespoons of crushed tomato with some bread on the side is a way to impress people with minimal effort

      They are super productive, at least the strain I started with. I have a friend in California that has two different strains, one is small and spicier the other is big and never has any heat. Both very productive. I'm hoping to trade him for some seed to compare to the strain I have now, which I do like very much.

    • @oxbowfarm5803
      @oxbowfarm5803  3 года назад +1

      There are OP shishito varieties and hybrid ones. I'd have no problem saving hybrid shishito seed for future use if you liked the flavor/production of them. Peppers are easy to save seed from as hybrids.

    hi i know this video is a bit old but im hoping you could answer some questions for me, im fairly new to gardening and they dont really have shishito peppers in my area, i got a couple shishito seeds off amazon and i got a couple of them growing, how do you know when they are ready? just wait for them to get 3-4 inches? also if i wanted to use a few of the peppers for seeds, would the green ones be ok? or do they need to ripen to red for seeds?

    • @oxbowfarm5803
      @oxbowfarm5803  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Keven. Shishito peppers are usually harvested when they are green for use in the kitchen, so you can harvest them at any stage you feel like. They don't all get 3-4 inches long anyway, so just pick whatever you feel like you need for cooking that are reasonable. There are different strains of Shishito out there, so the strain you got off of ebay might differ a bit from the ones we grow. For saving pepper seed, you want the seeds to be as ripe as possible. Definitely wait until the pepper turns red, and it wouldn't hurt at all to leave the seed peppers on the plant for a couple days to a week even after it fully turns color. And after you pick it it isn't a bad idea to leave the pepper to afterripen for a while before you pull the seeds. This give the seeds the most time to store as much energy reserves as they can before they dry down and go dormant. Sometimes you can get a viable seed from a green pepper, but most of them will be immature and too weak to germinate.

    • @oxbowfarm5803
      @oxbowfarm5803  5 лет назад

      Its available from quite a few companies, I do know that there are slight differences in "Shishito" depending on your source, some are more spicy than others at the red ripe stage, and the size of the peppers can vary based on the strain you get. I've been very happy with Shishito that I've purchased from Osborne Seed and also from Kitazawa Seed. Both companies have websites if you google them.

    Shishito plants how tall do they generally need to be to start flowering ?

    • @oxbowfarm5803
      @oxbowfarm5803  7 лет назад

      Not sure Tom, I generally don't micro manage my pepper plants the way pepper enthusiasts do, mainly because I don't have the time with so many plants and other crops etc. I am just getting into pepper pruning for creating a more stable plant structure, but I have not gotten into removing blossoms etc. Is that what you're talking about? I grow a lot of Shishito and other peppers for market, but I'm not a pepper expert either.

    • @tomneal72
      @tomneal72 7 лет назад

      Im saying some plants need to be a certain height or age before they produce crops and i was curious to know does that also apply to pepper plants

    • @oxbowfarm5803
      @oxbowfarm5803  7 лет назад

      I guess I'd say in general a pepper plant will start flowering when its about 8-12 inches tall, but if the plant isn't doing well these first flowers often don't produce anything. If you want a lot of pepper specific tips, check out some of the channels of pepper enthusiasts, especially the guys who like to grow super-hots. They really do seem to know a lot about maximizing production on individual plants. As a farmer I can't baby along an individual plant to anything close to the level that those guys can, but I like to see what people are doing and steal ideas when they are good, even though I consider all the super-hot peppers to be inedible personally.

      I'm not sure that I can Quantum Chang. Why does a particular food taste appealing? I know when I find something delicious, but I'm not sure I can say why shishito peppers are specifically. Sorry. I recommend you grow some and confirm or not for yourself.

      I've heard of that one! Its pretty huge isn't it? Here I have very little demand for hot peppers, shishitos don't really count as a hot pepper in my opinion. I wish there was more of a demand for some of the more interesting Mexican and Asian peppers, but I can probably meet the local demand here with the yield from one or two plants.
