It's a shame they completely scrapped PS2 compatibility from later models. Even with the compromised partial-emulation compatibility of the CECHE/C model it was nice to be able to put in your old discs and still be able to play these games through HDMI without so much work.

With custom firmware you can play ps2 on slim and non bc consoles. Only caveat is you have to rip it as an iso to the hard drive, and there are a few more bugs but a lot of the games are playable

      Same here!
Especially when PS2 transitioned from EE+GS with RDRAM(used on full compatible PS3s) to separated smaller GS(suspected to be 65nm)+ SoC(EE+RDRAM+IOP+SPU2+SDRAM) in 79000 and 90000 models, it means PS2 compatibility can still be evolved even further with better power consumption.
PS2 finally stopped production back in 2013 so it's definitely feasible to preserve the compatibility on slim PS3s, could be sold as extra premium models on 320GB/500GB large ones. IIRC Ken Kutaragi stated PS3 will drop PS2 hardware once the emulator is completed. Unfortunately Sony only allows playing PS2 Classics downloaded from PSN, they could have done what Xbox did with whitelisted games but Sony just chose to be conservative.

The reason for this was Sony was desperately trying to bring the price of the PS3 down given the the inflation adjusted prices for the launch 20 Gb and 60 Gb models are $737.64 and $885.46 today. Other features such as flash memory card readers from the 60 Gb model and the ability to play Super Audio CDs were also removed.
The high launch price was among many reasons why for the majority of that particular console generation the Xbox 360 was able to dominate the PS3 in sales. While the PS3 ultimately out sold the 360 relatively slightly in the end, some people postulate this was because in the later part of the PS3's market life, it was cheap enough that people picked it up as a budget Blu-Ray player.

Kinda. The config for scarface lowers the draw distance but still may occasionally crash, silent Hill 2 has slight graphical glitchs with people facial hair or eye lashes looking bright white in certain lighting conditions and Blacks config only fixes the spinning camera at the end of the fourth level it still has framerate problems and will still randomly teleport the player. It's still a great alternative I'd you don't want to hand over the cash for an A0/BO model.

Always nice to see footage of Black as it was one of the last games I played on the PS2 and was the game that got me into playing FPS games.
The graphics were way ahead of most PS2 games, which is probably what hooked me on it.
I remember when the PS3 was about to come out I bought a new 40in HD TV a few weeks before in preparation, and ran the PS2 on it for a little bit (had a 28in CRT before that). Obviously the PS2 was built at a time that old school 4:3 CRT TVs were a thing so you had two options, play with black bars at the side of the screen or use the fit to screen option which would stretch the picture horribly.
Only played a few games on the PS2 once I moved to the new TV, one being Black, another being Gran Turismo 4 and one of the WWE games (which I only did because I finally wanted to try the online aspect).
While in theory having a backwards compatible PS3 was a great idea in theory (I am in the UK so was the software based one), once I saw the full HD widescreen graphics of PS3 games, I never played a PS2 game again. I think Black would have been the only one I would have given a chance to, but as I got Resistance and COD3 with my PS3, I already had my FPS quota filled.

Shotana Studios did a GREAT video on this very thing! I was always bummed out about my E01... UNTIL THEN! I was always scratching my head when people said "your PS2 games will look worse on your PS3 actually, because of upscaling and such". I always thought "... they look even BETTER than they did on my PS2!". The smoothing from the emulation is awesome! Which is why emulation is the ultimate form of B/C. It has the potential to do even MORE than hardware if it's emulated through and through. I actually love my lead reballed E01 even more and don't feel bad about missing out on the A01 at all. I can always buy one later if I really want it. And on the plus side, the fact that PS3s are so unreliable has made the prices tank over the years instead of rise. I remember when sealed A01s were going for $2500! Now it's more like $1000-1500. There's still an embittered part of me that hates Sony and how their company culture made a turn for the worse in the 7th generation. There's still a strong sense of longing for emulation/backwards compatibility to be explored. And overall just a better company that actually takes pride in its past. Instead of making baseless blanket statements and doing the polar opposite, inversion of what they said. I haven't gotten a PlayStation console since my PS3 and honestly don't even intend to until Sony de-scumbag themselves. The PS3 should have had 110% put into it for $600 back in 2006. Oh, and by the way, you can add Primal (2003) to that list. It has black artifacting from time to time. And it's great to see people still making videos about PlayStation backwards compatibility. PS3 especially.

Most games that use a sensor usually don't work or have that feature completely removed as most games developed with a tracking accessory won't or never get remastered for that same reason.

If I remember correctly, Crash Twinsanity was unplayable on certain PS3 models (not sure if region and or version also contributes to this) after a certain point. Right before you go to the Academy of Evil, which is the second to last major hub world in the game, the game freezes and you cannot get past the transition to the hub world, even upon reloading. It’s been a few years since I’ve last seen this issue anywhere, so I’d assume there is some kind of fix out there now. The PS2 v1.00 version had crashes and freezes present, but not gamebreaking. The Dingodile fight was prone to freezing towards the end, requiring to fight the boss again, but you can get past the freeze.

BloodRayne 2, looks like they applied some kind of visual filter by placing a single polygon in front of the camera and then applying the filter as the texture to that polygon. The reason I suspect that is that the line through the middle not only follows the camera rather than the player, but also because that line would represent the seams between two tris on a face.

I would object I would love to see someone actually use av cable components to play PS2 games and check the compatibility that way.. alot of the game errors are due to upscaling where the PS3s Gpu is trying real hard to upscale and emulate these games and due to many games being locked at a certain frame rate and output using an HDMI cable kills backwards compatibility on cech C and E models.
I would love to see Ryan do this play with cable components and check backwards compatibility in that way on the e model he has and see if av cables helps these games out. Not sure if anybody has done this before to be exact.

    • @truthseekersthenewomega97

Another reason cech a and b models go bad, the video and graphics HDMI output end up dying , not to mention the south bridge causing the GPU and CPU to overheat and many other problems.
You got too understand that PS2 games didn't get patches quite often on the PS3 and if they did, what Sony did was unlock frame rates and or lock them to 720p-1080p and 1080i. Kinda of an upscale. Sony knew they couldn't get those games to work properly, hence why Sony remastered many PS2 games as hd remasters as they knew the PS2 games had problems uncapping frame rates and another reason why ps plus doesn't see many PS2 and PS1 games as many are stuck or capped. Another reason PS4 never fully got PS2 classic games as they used the previous PS2 classics from the PS3.

Remember only check a and b has the hardware and software tied to the console cech c and e don't however as Ryan explained that cech a and b has this weird stretch of a wide screen kinda output on games during gameplay which can be fixed with av cables as those were the original hardware's component and module it was made on.

Small, but (somewhat) noticeable change is when you try and play Klonoa 2: Door to Phantomile on an original ps3, it doesn't display the fire graphic that will kill your character after a single touch in the areas it'd displayed
not major, but it does seem silly if you don't know what's killing you in certain areas/haven't played it before
Slight more noticeable and game breaking is a certain level over halfway through the game that has an elevator about 2/3rds of the way through it. If you attempt to activate the elevator by hitting the switch that activates it, the game will crash on you
It sucks when you've made it 12 minutes into a level just to be met with a known error and trying it multiple times before googling the issue to find out you're not the only one
