The rod with the spinning reel is an 7' Ugly Stick Tiger Elite. I use that rod for using the Sabiki, catching bass, rock fish and casting small lures. I love them, before I bought some Simano Terez rods, most of my rods were Ugly Stick Tigers (still have them). They are a great price and work great. Caught many Yellowtail on them.
@@markr9312 I have a Phoenix tod an daiwa okuma rod my go to rod is an uglystick I just got on to try my luck for a medium size tuna see how it works out
@gizmo33rd Yeah most guys have way more tackle then we need. My last two Personal Best Yellowtail, were caught on my two smallest Aved reels, both 1 speed. We just like expensive toys, when most toys just work..
I did not add a weight this day. I usually do both but have always had more success with flylined and the macs will sometimes be swimming deeper and other times mid or upper column. Yellowtail have no problem knowing if your bait is 30' or 130' away. It depends on whether they're hungry or curious not having in front of their face, that's rock fish.
Thinking about several macs that got crunched yesterday. Although several including the big greenback was dead or almost, inspite of only small external marks. I never heard a run on any trolling or drifting times, but the condition of the macs, makes me think that some could have been Yellowtail attacks that were not entirely committed. They sometimes crush the mac in their mouths without swallowing it, then spit it out. The mac is either dead or just twitching and often not even missing a scale.
I have not caught a Yellowtail on a spinning reel, but from what I've experienced it's a lot harder. I am used to working my right hand in spite of pain from a surgically repaired right Wrist (not good) I can control the rod must better with the left arm. When using the spinning reel I'm winding (but not as efficient) while my right arm/wrist don't feel like I have the strength and control of the rod, even though the right is the dominant arm/wrist. Provably a personal preference, but watching all the east coast / Florida fishing videos. I laugh when I see them playing or trying to bring in Amberjacks (cousins to the California Yellowtail) using spinning gear is under gunned. They complain because they are so hard and put up a fight all the way back to the boat and their arms are now sore. He'll what are you looking for that can be better in Florida. Not in my book.
I now use Avet reels my two last PB's were caught on a Avet SX 5.3 And a MXL 5.8, I have several larger capacity models but the 2 smallest reels, were the ones that landed a 42 lb and a 46 lb 13 days latter on the smallest the SX 5.3
@@markr9312 thanks for the info.. last week went half day charter boat at sea forth and when we got out the tip of the jetti the boat stopped and made a u turn and said there was a school of yellow tails.. no one hooked up.. been on boat lots of times but never had a boat stop right there to fish lol
Launched just after 6am and landed around 1:20-1:30 pm. Yeah it started out fairly flat, although the wind was not 4mph as forecast, it was more like 7-8 and picked up more. It did get like a washing machine.
enjoy your vids, like an on the water fishing report.

What's the minimum size reel for yellow? Spinning and bait caster.. Spinning 5000+ sizes and bait caster 300/400 sizes

Before I switched to Avet reels, I used Daiwa Sealine in several 30 and 40 versions.
