Your assumption is right. I always see all the hot bites during summer and then winter it seems like I don't see it hear much about yellowtail. So I assumed that was the only time they're here and after that they go somewhere else like further south or something 😂, migrating like the birds 🤣. I do plan to head out there next year, I just got to get more experience and build up my body for paddling endurance etc. I'm somewhat scared thinking about it but also excited. More worried about launching from shore then being so close to the water and the jaws fear factor(damn movie,!!!) 😂. I did stumble upon San dog and your friend Mikey fish and sips. All three of you guys are a big help to us new kayakers that want to hit the ocean and don't know what to expect. Thanks again and stay blessed
Awesome that's great you should get out there, there's YT biting now supposedly. Don't be afraid of sharks, driving the freeway on the way to La Jolla is 1000x more deadly than anything you will encounter on the water. Drive safe, wear a PDF, and charge it!
Hi Chris, I live in OC and I usually head out to Dana point and salt creek. I really like getting out to LA Jolla sometimes but need guid for the area as far where to go and all. Hope I could load the kayak someday and head out with you.. keep up the great vids. 🍻
I will work on it. Yellowtail been slow lately, but honest most of my big Hali’s come as bycatch when fishing dropper loops for yt. Thanks for the feedback!
Got my first kayak two weeks ago ( I may have told you) A Hobie Revolution 13...been out of Oceanside Harbor twice(with fellow kayakers I met at launch). Built a bait tube, and , built the pole holders like Dan from flying fish tv has. Bought the Garmin striker 4 plus cv today, and ordered the battery and transducer arm. Getting closer...oh and I started a RUclips channel too. “So Cali Kayak”
That's my goal, to put useful info out there, without giving away too much. There's no substitute for the grind, unless you hire the Sea Samurai of course hahaha
Chris Blevins Dude I really appreciate your videos and I’m out there grinding and haven’t landed a yellow yet but It sure is nice to just be out on the water sometimes ✊
It was so awesome to see your rod go off when you were talking! I love this time of year for marking new reefs and rock piles. Thanks for another informative and helpful video!
The amount of work and info you provide is freaking incredible. Thanks so much for doing this. It really helps local San Diego fisherman like myself. Have a good one.
Great video bro! Been learning a lot from you and still looking for my first kayak yellow. Hopefully coming soon, definitely will be back this fall/winter!!!
Glad you liked it Die Hard! Saw you made it down here recently, and looks like you put in a legit effort. Hit me up if you are planning to come down again soon. YT fishing been pretty tough this year, had plenty of skunks that haven't made it onto the channel, but there's always a chance on any given day in La Jolla. Cheers!
Thanks for the tips Chris! Just subscribed, use to go out to la jolla a few years ago. Gona go out next weekend, any kelp out there or patties? Tight lines and heavy drag! Lol
You never fail to deliver. So many pearls of wisdom sprinkled throughout the video. I never thought to mark lobster pots for future rock fish spots. Once hooping starts to slow down, I’ll be heading back out to LJ. Thank you sir!
Oh of course Ronnie! Get some cold weather gear and you will have a solid shot this winter, and without the crowds on the beach at the launch. Nice to meet you the other day.
Your videos are awesome I really appreciate the time you put into your videos I'm waiting for my pa 14 to come on and I hope to see u out there keep up the good work brotha
I had the exact same kind of hit in the fog early Saturday morning. Except I was actually dragging a surface iron at the time, ha ha. Landed a 6lb monster Bonito! I thought for sure it was a yellow at first. Made a couple of great runs though! Fun fight!
You never know until it gets weighted up and you feel the first tail thumps. Those boneys can really fool you on the strike but they struggle to pull much drag with the tackle I’m using. Cheers Mark!
Thanks Brian. Ya I thought for sure I was bout to rope a YT on that one hahaha all good though, lately you gotta pick through those boneys to get the yellow meat. Cheers!
i'm from san diego and had no idea we have yellow tail off la jolla year round. your videos and shared info are motivating me to get out there. thanks for sharing your content!
Glad to hear it Kirk! Ya you don’t hear much about it since many shift gears to rockfish. But the winter can be insane for the dropper loop and yoyo. Cheers!
Hi Chris, I definitely would like to know how to make that sunscreen! I always worry about leaving a scent on bait if you use sunscreen though. Great video outro
Subbed! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I’m moving down from NorCal and looking forward to fish and maybe see you out in the water sometime next year
Hey Chris sick videos man. I was out there yesterday (friday). I hadn't been to la jolla in years. This year I got a hobie and decided to go out. I got pumped to go, I was watching your videos all week long where youre slaying the yellows. I had a similar day like you. Weather was just perfect. No yellows, but I did get a few big bonito. I'll keep going out there regularly, hope to run into you one day.
Don't you hate that where its just too nice to get bit? Hahaha good to hear you're getting back out there again. Keep at it this fall and you'll be on them in no time. I've been having plenty of skunks lately, so don't think its your fault. Cheers!
Yo chris its donald thanks for the bait again! A few yellows were boiling in the afternoon but didnt connect. A lot of bonitos in the afternoon wrecking up the mackerels! See you out there again! Yeeww!! 🤙🏽
Thanks Nick, nothing but positivity and good vibes on this channel. So stoked that my comment section has remained a good community and no hate or drama. And when the trolls do show up, the boys handle them in short order hahaha.
Hello Chris, great videos! I am hoping to get out into the deep blue this year. I've fished Florida waters in my younger years, just getting started again here in SoCal. My PA14 is almost ready to go.
Hi Chris, thank you for the good video and the tips. How much attention do you pay to tide when fishing for yellowtail? If high tide was at 11am and the tidal difference was big (spring tide), would you expect the yellowtail bite was better at 7am in the morning or from 10-12 (1H before and after high tide). my yellowtail fishing was very very slow on oct 2 and oct 3 and i am far far away from cali. seems like they went on an international hunger strike
Honestly not much. Really when I can fish i fish hard and for as long as I can. I don’t have the luxury of picking my trips based on tides or moon phases. When I can go, I go. Probably would be smart to keep a log of when I actually catch though... there are so many other factors that play I to the bite, and when I’m fishing in 100+ feet of water the tide doesn’t seem to make much difference. I will say the bigger swells do seem to drive the current and bite pretty consistently.
Got myself my first, second, and third yellowtail tuna this year so far lol. Started fishing La Jolla late August but I heard the spring months had a better bite!
Sick man, so when the water temp drops do you ever try soaking a Dropper loop greenback around that structure that you mentioned for lobster? Seems like that transition would draw things into it so soaking would offer the chance at different things.
Ya I will soak DL whenever I find a really fishy zone. But lately the conditions have been tough so I'm doing the trolling mostly to search for the fishy zones.
Hi Dickie, glad you found the channel! I have not covered that in a video before, but I use a T-bone bed extender on my Tacoma. I use the Wheel-ez cart to transport it into my truck. It's really quite easy. Thanks for watching, and commenting. Cheers!
I learned alot from this video, know that Chris! I like how you straighten out the fact that season for yellowtail is all year long when it is assumed by novices to La Jolla (like me) that they only show in the summer. Also, I like how you provide inputs of the lobster season, the traps everywhere, how the traps are strategically placed around structure and how it may be beneficial to fish around them and to be mindful of not having your fish get snagged on a lobster pot. Yes, please make a video on how to make the homemade sunscreen, I’ve been surfing for over 20 years (started at Scripps Pier) and it’s about time I stop using the commercial stuff and use something that’s not going to be harmful to God’s creations. I love how you mention about people asking on how to fish with no fish finder because I’m one of them! Every time I hunt for yellowtail I catch bonito and it’s good to know to check my leader. Once I get a fish finder, I will definitely go about your guidance, right now I’m just enjoying going blind (funny but not funny). Tight lines and heavy line, straight to the point and how to get the yellowtail on the kayak! I love the positive attitude and how you mention how this world is ugly right now but again you're still positive, enjoying the weather, glassy calm conditions and being safe. Lastly, taking a dip in the water and your method of mounting back up on the kayak, that was cool and good job!
Chris awesome video, a lot of times the information you give is better than a clip of you catching a fish. Thanks for giving us all the great tips. Only thing you could had done better was to post all the coordinates of the structures you fish around 😂
Lol no I wouldn't recommend it, those lobster fishermen are mean bastards and if they rolled up on you poaching their traps you might have some heat coming your way. Not to mention those traps are like 80 pounds. Haha cheers.
Just a light hearted joke. I do appreciate your videos, it is good content and very informative. I just started kayak fishing a few months ago so I’m trying to learn as much as I can.
