    5 degrees drop is actually a nice improvement. It might not be that impressive for desktop rig, but we are talking about slim laptop. Those crappy pastes that come with notebooks usually do not last long enough to provide decent cooling for even a year of heavy usage. So, it is DEFINITELY worth it.

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  6 лет назад +3

      Yedige Moldagaliyev I was thinking more in the amazing 15 drop on my MSI. But it has a big fan so all in, 5 degrees C is good. Just maybe not for everyone the work involved for 5 degrees C.

    • @xygnal
      @xygnal 6 лет назад +1

      If it's worth it, if you can make the heat dissipate into the chassis/cover as well, maybe it's worth trying? It would hot on the lap though. :P

      You said you don't like liquid metal. Well do you wanna see your 10-15 degree drop? Here's what you have to do. Go buy some nail polish(Gamer's nexus said which one to use) or high temp black tape, put it around your gpu and cpu, get some metal thermal pads that grizzly sells too. Now, apply the liquid metal, and change the thermal pads. If you wanna do a real stress test do a combination of blender and Aida 64 with a custom windows power plan that maxes out the cpu, and also, overvolt the cpu a bit. Aside from that overclock your gpu as far as you can. With that cooling system this shouldn't cause any temperature issues. I honestly think you would get a very large performance increase from all of this.

      @@xygnal Beside dust cleaning and replacing the thermal paste, undervolting the CPU also helps reducing the heat. I use throttle stop for that. Controlling the fans is also good, I use NoteBook FanControl for that but it is very complex (need to read Embedded Controler and testing the fan whilist searching for fan registry to program it)

    I just wanted to say that I bought this laptop to have a portable machine that i could use for somewhat intensive tasks. It was an upgrade from an alienware17 and a surface pro 4. It sort of combined the two. Anyways, I use Solidworks a lot for 3d renderings and flow/stress simulations and after setting up an overclock profile in Intel's XTU, It overall outperformed the desktop PC I was using(dual 980tis, core i7@5.0ghz). I was however experiencing thermal throttling when running some simulations. I later confirmed that was happening by running a couple stress tests. So i decided to go ahead and I opened the laptop up, removed the paste (which seemed a bit too dry for some reason) and I added some arctic silver 5. I put the laptop back together and after running the same set of simulations and tests, I did not throttle a single time. Maybe there is some variability in the paste/application of it but for me, it made a real-world noticeable difference.

    In case I want to install XTU, the installation routine tells me, the hardware is not compatible. Is this true for the Xiaomi Notebook Pro GTX Version? It seems I have massive throttling but only in battery mode. If connected to the power brick the performance is excellent.

    Do becareful if you are planning to open up the back cover. The side clips are fragile. I broke 3 ! Not sure how to avoid it as it is really tight and you do need some level of force to pry it off. So yeah, you do have to ask yourself if you really need to do it and if it will be worth it.

      Even a degree might stop the fan from spinning, so 5° is actually a good one. Remember the GPD Pocket? I also only get 5° drop (in idle) even without using the MX-4, but the machine becomes so awesome that you can push it a lot more (it can now compile its own kernel with all 4 cores in turbo) without getting frozen or reboot.

    You should really try Conductonaut on this or some other ultrabook. My dad has an old Pentium T6100 which has TDP of 25W.
    After putting Conductonaut on it, the temps didn't go above 50°C even after 30min of prime95 smalFFT torture. Fan was spinning at it's minimum RPM.
    Also, someone mentioned nail polish on resistors. It would be awesome if you did all of this. You might be impressed like on your MSI or even more :)

      you know i thought they did, but i read somewhere that the fan speed is controlled by voltage rather than temp, i have noticed a difference in fan noise after using xtu, i couldnt undervolt using xtu as i have the rev 501 bios but you can force the cpu to underclock by reducing the boost power limit to around 11-13 watts so that the power throttling kicks in and that has had a significant impact on fan noise under load for me.

    What's the best performing paste that doesn't crust up easily? I don't want to repaste too often. Maybe something that lasts 1 year without solidifying.

    When repasting, you shouldn't look at the amount of it to determine the quality of the pasting job. The only difference the amount makes is how clean it looks (as long as it's not way too little). The way of applying also really doesn't matter; just skip the spreading part, the pressure from the mounting screws will do that just fine for you, especially on such a small surface. You can do it if you want, but it will not improve the thermals at all. Source: ruclips.net/video/r2MEAnZ3swQ/видео.html
    In short; buy a better quality thermal compound (I'd recommend Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut if you can find it at a decent price, or Gelid GC-Extreme if you can't), just put a little bit on there (too much is better than too little) and let the mounting pressure do the rest.

    Ordered the Mi Notebook Pro a few days ago. Will probably check the temp after a while and repaste... (never done it before though, so I'm not totally convinced I know what & how to do it, this vid is definitely helping though). I'd definitely say those 5 degrees are worth it, especially since it will probably help even more in the longrun.

      Best of luck, if you're not sure maybe leave it. if not done right temps could increase.

    I have an idea, the fans are metal right? And they have good airflow anyway. Do you think it’s possible to transfer some heat to use it as a heat sink itself? Use thermal pads between chassis or some super flat copper bridge to heat pipe

      it would be possible, but not really sure it would do much here. In the case of the fanless tech I review it does really help out.

    Keep in mind, those 5 Degrees would help you a lot with Intel XTU :) Tweaking TDP from 15 to 30-40W will give you a dream-performance.

    5 degrees is a huge difference, of course it is worth, considering that it only takes like 10 minutes (at most)
