Just eating the dinner Rob sure that video was better than any news broadcast, ive a lawn renovation booked in myself next week im looking forward to doing it hope all good 👍
For future reference, put your plants in before the bark. I agree with the other comment about avoiding the membrane if you're going to plant on top, plants need space to root freely
wow. what a difference that border has made. looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the upper part of the garden. keep up the good work 👍🏻
I've just completed this with grey composite decking board (with wood grain marking) on edge with steel stakes concealed behind under the gravel. The previous timber set-up lasted 8 years. Cost a lot more than timber but should last decades 👃.
We've almost changed our mind with this area since. We have plant pots on top of this space currently. We are going to be stoning the entire area instead of having the soil.
I'm sure they were 45x25 - I think anyway - sorry I can't be more specific! I just went to B&Q and had a good look at everything until I found what I thought would do the job. Good luck with your project! 👍🏻
It's just treated wood from B&Q. Just made sure that whatever you get is pressure treated so that it can hold up. The posts will inevitably rot away, but it will be an easy job in the future to refresh these. They should last a good few years though.
I thought treated timber would last a long time. I'm going to attempt this border, except with pebbles on top. Where did you get the timber please? I need cheap realt as I'm in a rented place 🙂
Not a dumb question! It's an SDS drill. Specifically the Titan one that you can pick up from Toolstation or Screwfix. It's got much more power than a regular drill!
@@NoviceGardener thank you! For some reason I never thought of using a drill to create the holes for the posts in the soil. But now you’ve explained it it makes absolute sense. Thank you :)
Very nice. What I would encourage people to do, though, is give the wood some extra protection with a creosote substitute or similar. Even pre treated wood will rot quickly in a border. Easy to replace, I suppose.
That’s a pretty good shout. I’m I. The process of making a raising planter out of sleepers and I’m looking to add more protection to the wood just to give it more longevity!
Why wouldn't you lower the lawn edger board down another inch or a bit more so that you can run your lawnmower wheels on top of the lumber and not have to come back with a grass trimmer or scissors?
Hi thanks mate for this amazing series. Really helping out us diyers. Few questions if u could help me with. 1) what size sleeper height and thickness did you use and where did you buy em from? Jus the general treated wood from b&q any good? 2) did u mention u poored post screed into the post holes to reinforce them. 3) what screws did you use to attached post to timber edging. 4) instead of wooden posts do you think metal stakes would do a good enough job without the screed as im not confident using post screed. Many thanks in advance!
Cheers 👍🏻 1. sleepers are 200mmx100mm - got them from Jewson, but anywhere should be fine. 2. used postcrete to secure them in place - put 1 third of the post in the ground. 3. I used 150mm timberlock screws. 4. metal posts should be just as good (I did consider this during the planning phase!)
Don’t see the point of putting bark down to be honest, should have gone up to the sleepers with the turf if your not gonna plant anything🤔 Gravel near lawn (step) never a good idea esp for mowing. Would have put the lawn edging in first before laying the lawn, that’s just me.
I loved learning how to edge in this video! I will edge now wherever I go, thank you for teaching me how to edge!
ive always struggled with edging because i always end up finishing accidentally
I edged to this video
I'm trying to do my big back garden, on my own so watching your videos is helping me get ideas
Thanks

I thought David Price was a plumber, seems like he's a dab hand at all trades! Good work lad.
lawns looking mint there

That’s Steven Gerrard narrating this video, and there’s nothing you can say to change my mind.
🤣
Haha, Steve G has a stronger scouse accent, more Rooney
Defo a Manc Lad
Hahahahahhaha
Very nice job. Well impressed.
Quality work bud and real easy to watch video. keep pushing
Now I know what to do with all my pallet boards 👍
Beautiful backyard.
Great job smashing it.
Lovely job😊
Hello from Dublin, great job man, looks really well 👍👍
Nice one! 👍🏻
Nice work.
Hi
Thank you so much for your useful video. Can you please tell me what the measurements of the garden edge (wood boarder)? Thanks
Looks really good. 👏🏼
wow. what a difference that border has made. looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the upper part of the garden. keep up the good work 👍🏻
Great videos mate!
Are you sure you're not a professional? That's got a proper showroom finish to it, great job!
Great job mate

That's quiet a good shout! I'll make note of this for when I need to replace mine.
I have a similar set up and I have blackbirds pecking at the bark and chucking it onto the grass :( I think I will replace it with gravel soon
I’ve had a few doing this already!
Hi.what size wood did you use for the Border/edging 120mm x ?.
Your border looks very impressive .
Wow nice job
Thanks 👍🏻
Good work 👏
Nice one 👍🏻
Amazing work!
Nice one! 👍🏻
Helpful video, thank you. The weedmat/membrane is a bad idea long term though. Bad for soil health and doesn't do your plants any favours.
We've almost changed our mind with this area since. We have plant pots on top of this space currently. We are going to be stoning the entire area instead of having the soil.
Love a good edge
Great job 👍. I did The same I only got a few years the wood goes rotten the only mistake I made I should have used PVC or concrete edge boards .🙏
Great video, this is similar to what im doing right now, what was the wood you was using please. 👍
It's just pressure treated stuff I picked up from B&Q
Good job.
Nice one!
An amazing job 💯. Thanks 👍
Cheers 👍🏻
Looks class! What size was the wood you used for the stakes mate? Attempting a similar border myself.
I'm sure they were 45x25 - I think anyway - sorry I can't be more specific!
I just went to B&Q and had a good look at everything until I found what I thought would do the job.
Good luck with your project! 👍🏻
Surely those wood panels used for edging will rot in no time at all?
2 years on and they're still standing. They'll need to replaced at some point, but will be easier than the original install.
Thanks!
Have you re-treated the cut-ends of your sleepers and other timber? Barrettine make a special treatment for this.
Yep, just to be sure.
Hi Mate can you let me know the wood materials you used? Thanks job looks great
It's just treated wood from B&Q. Just made sure that whatever you get is pressure treated so that it can hold up. The posts will inevitably rot away, but it will be an easy job in the future to refresh these. They should last a good few years though.
Love your videos mate, good honest hard graft with amazing looking results. You should be very proud of yourself.
Good video what wood did you use for the border
Just pressure treated stuff from B&Q
@@NoviceGardener thank you keep posting fanastic stuff
Whats the big drill which you are running into the ground?
It's an SDS drill - Titan. You can get it from Toolstation or Screwfix for around £70 from what I can remember.
how long wood last in the ground?
What type of timber have you used for direct ground contact?
I used pressure treated stuff. It will rot in time, but it will last for a good few years before that happens!
I thought treated timber would last a long time. I'm going to attempt this border, except with pebbles on top. Where did you get the timber please? I need cheap realt as I'm in a rented place 🙂
Great work mate. What type of wood did you use ?
I used treated timber - won’t last forever but will hopefully last long enough
Ah, it was 1800mm x 120mm - 24mm thick too
Sorry for the dumb question but what is the tool you are using to create the holes for the posts? Is it a small jackhammer tool?
Not a dumb question!

@@NoviceGardener thank you! For some reason I never thought of using a drill to create the holes for the posts in the soil. But now you’ve explained it it makes absolute sense. Thank you :)
I’m thinking of doing something similar to you. Painting my fence black. And then using black railway sleepers as a border.
Good luck with your project! 🙏😁
How are the boards holding up are the rotting or doing ok?
They're doing great! I've just levelled the lawn again, taking it right up to the edging, and it has held up great.
What is the best wood to use for edging, please?
So the wood is going to break down over time right
Inevitably, it will. But with it being pressure treated, it should lay a good few years before it shows any signs of rot.
Can u please share the wood dimension u used?
It was 20mm by 100mm.
Very nice. What I would encourage people to do, though, is give the wood some extra protection with a creosote substitute or similar. Even pre treated wood will rot quickly in a border. Easy to replace, I suppose.

What measurements are the panels & posts?
From what I can remember, panels were 18x100 and the posts were 45x45.
Why wouldn't you lower the lawn edger board down another inch or a bit more so that you can run your lawnmower wheels on top of the lumber and not have to come back with a grass trimmer or scissors?
Love it❤
Even my cedar 4x4 raised bed rotted out within three years.
what wood did you use and dimensions?
I can’t remember exactly, but I’m sure it was 100x20x1800
will the stake rot soon ?
Yep, but this is something I will replace every few years to tidy things up. Should only be a quick job with everything already in place.
Silly question but what stops the lawn edging from rotting from water? are they always treated before you buy them?
I always buy treated wood for projects like this. But inevitably, they will rot away in time, but we're talking years!
Looks great.

Ahh found the video for edging 😅
Not protecting the wood? It will rot soon
Can you add an email address to your about page so I can send a PM ?
