Some Wikipedia info about the song that I found interesting: "Sixteen Tons" is a song about a coal miner, based on life in coal mines in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. It was written and first recorded by Merle Travis at the Radio Recorders Studio B in Hollywood, California on August 8, 1946. [...] The line, "You load sixteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt," came from a letter written by Travis' brother John. Another line came from their father, a coal miner, who would say, "I can't afford to die. I owe my soul to the company store." [...] the line, "I owe my soul to the company store", is a reference to the truck system and to debt bondage. Under this scrip system, workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with non-transferable credit vouchers which could be exchanged only for goods sold at the company store. This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings.
Born & Raised in WV. Lot of family worked the rail cars. Had an Uncle tell me just after the Matewan incidents the scales somehow started weighing true, previously they weighed "light enough a sparrow could move a train" might weigh 3 or 4 tons off a car. Not that many of you will care- but this recording was done by the original Platters, with Herb Reed doing the bass lead. The photo, however, is not the original Platters group but a later version that Herb Reed put together after the original group broke up. In the photo, you don't see Tony Williams, the original tenor or Zola Taylor, the original female in the group. Just a little history.
By FAR the best version of this song. It's perfect from every angle: tempo, voice, instruments. It was by dad's favourite rocknroll song and it's mine too.
This song is a masterpiece on its own. I never knew this version, only the Tennessee Ernie Ford 's version which I always thought was the definite version. But I'll admit I am blown away by this arrangement and performance! The Platters were amazing!

Haven't heard this song in an absolute age. My mother was a big Platters fan. I grew up listening to many great songs. Hearing this one brought back some very good memories. If I said I last heard this on an 8 track machine, should give you an idea when i last heard it. Still have very happy memories.
As I was younger, I remember the coal man. He delivered sacks of coal of some 50 or more pounds to the coal shute at our house. It was a horse drawn wagon and all coal men wore a leather patch over his right shoulder to take the weight off his clothes. Their faces were black from coal dust. I always loved the smell of burning coal, even today I remember it fondly.

Who say this will ever be forgotten? Hell no , classics rocks
A voice deeper than the mines themselves
And the miners' debt
Wow

I love THE PLATTERS!

If a mountain could sing, this is the voice I would imagine it to have.
Mountains are busy killing Martells, got no time for this bullshit
Go Tell It On the Mountain!
How 'bout Tony the Tiger! "They're G R E A T!"
That is perfect analysis. Well played!
Ahah in my head its the same, a huuuge fat cat with sunglasses and a cigar
