Yeah, I just finished reading David Leaf's biography of Brian (2022 edition) and that's one of the main things I learnt. Brian's voice wasn't that bad after the 60s, he just often wasn't bothered and discarded his falsetto partly to attain a more mature image. Listen to the SMiLE concert in 2004 and you'll find out that he still had it
Brian does pretty good here! What strikes me more about this mix, though, is the production seems less... awful. Keepin' The Summer Alive suffered more, I think, from the milquetoast production than it did from the writing (Brian could, can, and always will turn out a beautiful melody). This has a lot more bite than the released mix.
No, there's some notable differences, hard to describe in text, but the first verse is not in the released version, the chorus is the same, there's two extra lines in the bridge after the first singing of the chorus, etc.
videos like this is why i dont buy that brian needed to relearn his Musical skills in landys program. his average performance didnt get better at all with it.
Are you really that unfamiliar with Brian's voice during this period? It's totally him. It actually showed promise over the cigarette and cocaine induced gruff croaks he did from about 76 to 81. He claimed he was embarrassed over "sounding like a girl" in his earlier work. Incidentally, those earlier vocals put him in the Rolling Stone list of 50 greatest rock singers of all time.
Actually, both songs are called "Oh Darlin' though they are indeed very different songs. As we all know, the Beach Boys hit "Darlin' sung by Carl is a completely different (and wonderful) song.
There's: -"Darlin'" from _Wild Honey_ (1967), by the Beach Boys -"Oh! Darling" from _Abbey Road_ (1969), by the Beatles -"Oh Darlin'" from _Keepin' the Summer Alive_ (1980), by the Beach Boys *(This song)*
Brian actually sounds very good on this outtake
When Brian is engaged he has one of the most wonderfully expressive voices

yeah and pet sounds live he does an even better job with his falsetto
brian's recorded voice on the early lp's - unmatched- anywhere, imo. "girls on the beach" - on a summer day...omg!
I've been looking for this song since I was 16 . I found it at last tonight. Feeling emotional only took 40 years !
wow! awesome
Carl's harmony was spot on.
I am 58 years old and blown away by this rendition!
Love hearing Brian sing and heard Carl sing this as well .
Lovely version with Brians precision, less of Carls honey, but harmony-stupendous...love Brian at this period!
Absolutely beautiful. Beautiful Brian ❤️🌹
Still Listening to this Brillance 'Jan 2022
More people need to hear this.
Such a wondrous version. Love this. The Beach Boys have filled my life all these years. Thanks for posting.
This version sounds like "LOVE YOU" album
High praise!
What a gem.

I think this album is underrated.
I love it!! Don't think I have heard this one before.
Banger

Wonderful. He is so so expressive. Did Brian write it as well?
❤
Where did you find this recording?

@@jwhitt1776 - It was Carl.
@@jwhitt1776It’s Carl. Maybe someone was too close to the mic?
Are these the same lyrics as the released version?

No

it sounds similar to Celebrate the News
Interesting.
What's the year of this one?
Maybe 1980?
Recorded sometime between July 1979 and February 1980
Superior version imo. Wish Brian was a little louder
Carl’s vocal lead on this song is pure perfection. Brian can’t do it justice.
That's not Brian's voice.
Yes, it is.

Oh, Darlin is a Beatles song.... this song is called Darlin. ok?
Actually, both songs are called "Oh Darlin' though they are indeed very different songs. As we all know, the Beach Boys hit "Darlin' sung by Carl is a completely different (and wonderful) song.
However, this isn't their hit Darlin', which was originally intended to be a Brian solo record.

Not ok, no.
@@GoodGamer3000 I think this thread needed the clarification, I've no idea why (almost) everyone else seems so confused about it.
kind of a boring song
sounds good though
