I like hearing Dennis sing lead in this version. He has that bluesy, gravely sound to his voice, If he were a musical instrument he would be a Saxophone and Carl would be a French Horn. Brian? Maybe a flute.

Dennis did play some keyboard until 1974 when he started drumming again when Fataar left the group.

This was the Blondie/Ricky era. Piano break is long time touring member Billy Hinsche. If you find this song on a show called 'Good Vibrations from London' Also 1972, it has Carl singing lead. RIP Dennis and Carl.
Carl was the only one of the Beach Boys who worked on every track of Dennis' Pacific Ocean Blue album (He played lead guitar, sang backing vocals on several songs, and co-wrote the tracks River Song and Rainbows). They did some fantastic stuff together.
I' ve never heard this version before. Love it!!! Dennis is fantastic on lead. Miss him so. Is that Billy on piano? Is this on cd anywhere? Can't stop listening to it!😀
It would be nice to have a compilation of all of Dennis Wilson's work- solo work, compositions, lead vocals and covers. This track most certainly belongs in such a compilation. Thank you for this cut!
It would have made a lot of sense to have "the real beach boy" front the band more often than not. This recording is a great taste of what the Beach Boys could have sounded like with Dennis's great rock and roll voice handling the lead vocals.
I would agree with their as well. Beachboys should made more lead vocals like for example Don Henley of the Eagles. Dennis Wilson proved he was more than just pretty face. He was no fool. He could a solo too.
I'm always gonna love Al Jardine singing this song, and he does it wonderfully and soulfully himself. I do wonder how Dennis happened to get to be singing the Lead Vocal on this occasion (and also who was replacing him on Drums during it), but Dennis is darned good here too. What I notice is Dennis using more blue notes and even more frequent turns of individualized phrasing than Al usually does (and Al does quite a lot of that too). Considering how raspy Dennis' voice became later and how he seemed to struggle with that at times (e.g., on "You Are So Beautiful," which rather became his signature tune the same way 'Rhonda' really has become Al's), this recording is a stark contrast. Here, Dennis's voice is strong, clear as a bell, and very facile. What I guess I hear and hope others hear in Dennis' singing here--since he didn't do all that many Lead Vocals when he was younger on BB recordings--was just how accomplished all the BB were vocally. Carl was a bit of a late bloomer but had terrific Lead Vocal capability especially. All three Wilson brothers have been vcoally strong in their day (Brian too in so many ways; just listen to his album IMAGINATION sometime if you don't already know it). They didn't have anything like classical vocal training (adapted to pop/rock and roll) but all those years of family vocalizing/harmonizing really paid off for them. I guess this goes to show the advantages of groups having gotten off to an early start; The Beatles likewise did that and, by the time their Hamburg days were behind them, they really were ready for the limelight. The BB just kept at the music-making too and it really shows. Bravo, Dennis and Bravo, Al, both! And Bravo Brian and Mike for writing this classic BB tune for them to sing and us to enjoy.
