  • Between 2015 and 2019, India was the second-largest arms importer in the world, behind only Saudi Arabia. With 50-55% of India's defence needs being met through imports, it's heavily reliant on countries like Russia, France and Israel for its defence technology.
But all that is about to change as India is working towards becoming aatmanirbhar in defence. They have already set aside 63% of their defence budget for FY22 which is $9.7 billion to procure locally produced weapons and systems.
Let's take a look at the top 10 defence startups in India making India aatmanirbhar in defence technology.
    00:00 Introduction
04:06 #10 Big Bang Boom Solutions
    05:51 #9 Sagar Defence Engineering
    06:58 #8 Optimized Electrotech

    09:53 #6 Vinveli
    11:06 #5 IdeaForge

#3 Cron Systems (Cron AI): Founded by Tushar Chhabra, Tommy Katzenellenbogen, and Saurav Agarwala in 2015, CRON Systems (Cron AI) is an IoT-based startup that is developing security solutions that are being deployed at Indian borders to detect any intruders and protect the troops.
#2 Axio Biosolutions: Founded by Leo Mavely in 2008, Axio Biosolutions has developed India’s first FDA approved wound care product - Axiostat. Both of you don't contemplate the telephony and IT by Rajiv Gandhi govt.
Lot of this thing that you are now seeing is because of his initiative in late 80's and now arrival of Venture capital in India. Venture capital scene was not big anywhere before 2012 outside US. After US opportunities plateaued, more and as more big US companies started having branches in India, when bangalore etc coming out as silicon valley, when many of the venture capitalists themselves were of Indian roots.Venture capital scene was bound to move to India. So it is coincidental that it happened with change of govt. This govt is good in some aspects but bad in other aspects. It is good when it approves Tejas. Then it quickly, cuts off DRDO from assembling Rafael to give it to Ambani who has not assembled anything in life. This. Govt is good in starting the innovation design competition and encouraging the private participation in defence. In doing so, you don't have to destroy or protect the public sector companies. In space, small startups needs tie ups with big cos like ISRO just like Musk's SpaceX gets from NASA but I haven't see that happening in India. At the same time DRDO doesn't need to be destroyed but shown more confidence to participate with smaller startups like Ambanis. Moreover, if BJP govt can't take advice on de-monetisation etc and drive savvy people like Rajan out of the country, it is whimsical to laud this govt. It is poorest govt ever on taking advice from any one. Other advisers to PMO also have been replaced by YesMen.

      Ankur Mahajan
What you say is d r d o is dead all these decades & suddenly woke up from slumber in recent years. This is far from true. Behind
d r d o's successes, about five decades of hard-work and products reday for use, but no demand. That is the foundationon which this edifice has been built & not overnight. Now, when the governent made the demands, wheels started moving. All these decades helluva lot of money was going for purchase of weapns systems from abroad. Now (though we keep importing a lot, because we want to give the best to our Armed forces), we make a lot in the country too.
Also, d r d o isn't a manufacturing concern, but develops Technology that gets passed onto public sector (defence) companies for manufacturing - because manufacturing is entirely a different kettle of fish altogether, from "development". So, the Indian observer is naive to think that d r d o makes (manufactures).
A country's strength lies in its ability to make state-of-the-art weapons, all on her own. India did well. But there are dark spots too. We are unable to make an engine for our own Tejas airframe, though all other sub-systems are managed. Even now Tejas flies on American (designed &) made engines. It is the toughest Technology, to master it the Westernesr took about seven decades to arrive at this stage. It'll be a feather in the cap of India's defence, when our own "designed" engine (we in India have been making engines by thousands for fitment in Russian, British, French aircraft systems for about six decedes - on "license") is fitted in Tejas. That day, we 'll be able to export them.

Great roundup of Indian defence startups. What is needed above these small companies is the ability of Indian private giants like L&T, Kalyani, Tata, Mahindra to compete for the big stuff--tanks, jet engines, radars, ships, fighters, transports, helicopters--with active government incentives. The public sector is totally against this and the result is obvious--we don't make our own rifles what to speak of engines, jets, tanks. "Indian" should not ever mean "govt owned" but it does in India.

The bedrock of "high growth years" of UPA were the New Telecom Policy, Electricity Act, Disinvestment & Privatization, NPS, SEZ, stopping Deficit Financing, FRBM act etc. All of these were done by a coalition Government of BJP. Sadly, people don't know about the impact of these reforms, and those who know skip over these to paint a certain picture.

This video is for defense start-ups, But my concerns is regarding the general trend, fintech services and software startups are the only ones getting the lime light in India, these start-ups mostly work towards transfer of money and financial resources from one to another, they don't generate value or do any value addition in the economy.
When you produce a product, you are adding value into raw materials and thus creating wealth. And such start-ups are rare to find in India.

Excellent video, thanks for making this. It is a well researched video we’ll done. One request please publish this as an add on to intellectual news papers in India on one off-the week days as the “positive impact” will be holistic across all people with kids to families to parents to entrepreneurs and academic and students also.
Fact is Unfortunately r&d is in bad stage in country which is changing for good at seed level, currently-
      1. India should look at r&d as investment and not as cost
      2. Govt and investors should encourage and reward promote every such startup firm with huge working capital for startups to sustain r&d which may take more time as Indian defence standards are stringent
3.government media press should encourage this
4.politics also has a great impact in india on startups where I had observed that be it “state-Division not two” or “election year” there is a big impact on small firms on payments receivable etc and govt should ensure some kind of measures for some years to see that it is not impacting research or such firms
      5. Academics, leaving a very few is not breeding culture of innovation research promotion by introducing say 2 subjects on research-funding, standards compliance and promote paid-research internships like as in USA or Germany. This should
Be done both in all graduate and post graduate courses mgmt tech …in all sectors where govt is spending bus gets
6.globalisation promotion of research products or innovation into multiple countries in some capacity
      ….
      7. Many such points are from lessons learnt of guys who dared and called it back and still striving. If possible
8.Please also make a video of all startups who could not takeoff with reasons traced and am sure you will get a big list of half-baked researched innovations from middle class innovative guys.
Am sure the needs will be working capital related where more funding is needed for experiments travels thought-to-action standards-compliance’s etc…

Above are my views only and anybody transforming the research process in india can consider the same in this dynamic digital
      Age of algorithmic supremacy.
      …..
Great video and wishing more videos from you👏
