    *As an Indian myself, I see that most of start up, the ones got unicorn-ed recently, depends on volume than actual innovation. We have a large population and they seem to depend on that. Thats why when I see tartan sense like start up, that actually feels nice, even though I know that investors wont come rushing on this one, as its harder to scale up.*

    Hey Caleb, when an Indian company headquarters moves abroad, does India still get any benefit from that company?

    • @asakurayoh3909
      @asakurayoh3909 3 года назад +8

      Nope. They pay taxes there and employ people there. If they have there headquarters there it will be considered as an American company.

    • @backstagewithmillionaires
      @backstagewithmillionaires  3 года назад +16

      Hi Groot, this isn't technically true, the Supreme Court of India holds that a company's nationality is determined primarily by its place of incorporation, and is not affected by the company's "central management and control" being located outside India. So while the business may not be immediately relevant to India's startup ecosystem and as you said, pays taxes outside of India, it is still considered to be an Indian company. -Caleb

    • @backstagewithmillionaires
      @backstagewithmillionaires  3 года назад +24

      Good question Bob. If they're still doing business in India despite being headquartered outside of India, then certainly India will be benefited. Other times, a startup will be _registered_ outside of India but will be doing all of their business within India - Flipkart was a good example, they were registered in Singapore to take advantage of favorable tax laws and incentives, but all of their employees, offices, warehouses, etc. was happening in India.
      Ultimately though, these companies decide how "Indian" they want to be. Employees, offices, customers, and even taxes, are all variables that a startup can increase or decrease based on their preferences and goals. -Caleb

    • @backstagewithmillionaires
      @backstagewithmillionaires  3 года назад +2

      Hi Raskin, we don’t have any immediate plans to make such a video, but I’ll keep the idea in my mind 🙂 here’s a brief explanation: 1. Indian startups often move their headquarters outside of India to be closer to their customer base, e.g. if it’s an Indian SaaS startup that is primarily serving American companies, they will probably shift their headquarters to the United States. Indian startups also shift their official registered address outside of India, to Singapore, or Delaware, or some other business-friendly state/country in order to take advantage of favourable tax breaks/incentives. Sometimes they are also headquartered in these places, but usually it’s just the country of registration, and the HQ is somewhere else. 2. Indian startups IPO outside of India if they think they can raise more money and be more successful as a public company outside of India. The American stock market is very big, and it attracts investors from all around the world. The Indian stock market, on the other hand, isn’t as popular, as it is mainly invested in by Indian investors, limiting the amount of capital available. That being said though, an Indian company can only really have a successful IPO outside of India if they’re known outside of India. A homegrown, local startup focusing exclusively on the Indian market probably won’t have a successful IPO outside of the Indian stock market, so they tend to go public within India. -Caleb
