Melting Winterland, KISS Alive in San Francisco 1975 (franKENstein Redux)

- Video: The video has been upscaled to 1080p. The source was the KISSology version. I did a shot-by-shot adjustment to the entire show. Since this was taped in B&W, I decided to approach as if it had been lit for B&W, with a more even brightness on the entire band. In order to correct for this, I used layers and masking throughout the entire show in order to even out the lighting. In the original, Peter especially often appeared very dark (and also members not directly in the spotlight). I made my best effort to bring him and the other guys out more without simply brightening the entire shot. I also decided to go with a more high-contrast overall look rather than the washed-out grey seen on most of the original concert. It's always a tradeoff between keeping as much detail as possible while making it look good as a whole. This show is a fan favorite and was always one of the very best, IMO. basically, in this era KISS "was" black and white, so the look of this show combined with the powerful performances by all of the members, makes for a great presentation of the young, hungry band in their pre-superhero years. They were darker, more sinister and this show demonstrates what a really great and evenly matched rock and roll band they really were in the beginning. That early chemistry is on full display in this concert. As much as I'd love to see a full-color multi-cam HTH show, for this era B&W totally works.
I also did a bit of "creative" editing, mostly to remove all of the videotape/camera glitches seen throughout the concert. Many songs would be dark for the first several bars of the song, so I tried to use what I could to eliminate all of that black space. I also split shots to make the pacing (hopefully) more enjoyable. For instance, if the camera was on Gene for the entire 1st chorus and then only on Ace & Paul for the entire 2nd chorus, I would split and swap pieces to make it appear that the camera was switching back and forth.
AUDIO: The audio was created using isolated tracks from KISS Alive! along the actual Winterland concert. My attempt was to bring the sound of Alive! (but totally remixed) to the show while maintaining every aspect and nuance of the original performance. My goal was not to change or necessarily "improve" the playing, but rather to re-create it with much better quality.
Drums: Along with the original Alive! tracks, I replaced Peter's kick and snare drum with polyphonic samples I crated from Pater's actual kit. I did not re-create Peter's performance note-for-note, but edited everything to match any time you can see him play something different (even when he drops a stick midway through Ace's solo in "NTL"). His entire solo in "100,000 Years" was done using his original Winterland drums combined with my samples to give it the same sound as the rest of the show.
Bass: All of Gene's parts come from Alive! with some added distortion to better match his live sound. I did use his Winterland bass for some things like in the blood-spitting bit before "100,000 Years" and the intro to "NTL" along with a few other bits.
Guitars: Most of the guitars come directly from Alive! with a few exceptions. Paul's guitar on "100,000 Years" comes from the "alternate" version which has better left/right separation than the album version. For Ace's solo's I kept him panned more to the right, replacing Paul's rhythm from other spots in the song. For Ace's guitar, is also comes from Alive! with the exception of any solos where he strays from the album version. For those songs, the solos are taken directly from the isolated Winterland track. His solo spot and the jam before it also come from the actual show.
Vocals: 99% of the vocals come directly from the Winterland show. The only exceptions are a few words here and there that do not come through clearly either due to the isolation software limitations or (mostly Paul) singing a bit off-mic. I also perfectly synced either the live album version or studio version of the vocals under the video and blend in only the high frequencies to bring good sibilance to the vocals to make them clearer. I corrected Gene's vocal flub in "Cold Gin" (sorry purists). I also blended a little bit of the Alive! vocals under the choruses of Parasite and Cold Gin because the audio wasn't very clear.
This concert cuts off mid-song during LMG,RnR, but there was enough to get all three verses with a bit of creative editing (since much of the parts repeat throughout the song). I used some of the middle jam for the credits and pieces together the ending just so we have a semi-cohesive full song.
As I always say, these shows are NOT for the purists. We will always have the originals for that. My goal is to make these shows as true to the original, but with much improved audio that is a realistic representation of the actual performance. These shows have taken many months and countless hours to assemble, so I do hope other KISS fans like myself enjoy them.

This is the Kiss I will always remember. 🤘🏼👍🏼
This probably the best early KISS performance on RUclips
agree!!
YEP , They were broke and hungry 😋
LADY!…. ( I’ll have this song in my head all DAY! ) this was the Kiss my older brother introduced me to back then. It’s classic.
BEST Ace live I have ever seen, he was KILLLIN IT!
Even then, Gene and Paul made sure they got all the camera time, even through most of Ace’s solo and barely 10 seconds of Peter.
Amazing job with the resoration. This is KISS at their best. No ego, no money, no fame ..just pure hard rock to the core.
Yeah exactly-reaching a peak, but still hungry.
Good answer
To me, early KISS will always be the best KISS !!!
Back in the day, there was nothing like them. Enjoy your retirement guys. Thanks for the memories.
I could not agree more. They had it back then. Ace Gene Paul and Peter. These four personalities together just worked.
I prefer old, fat KISS with Gene’s belly sticking out of his suit while they sang “I Was Made for Loving You” 🤘
I first saw them at the Daisy in Amityville, New York then at MSG both in the 70's and finally at the Barclay's in Brooklyn for the End of the Road Tour. Each show is a memory I'll never forget. Great shows, great music, great times with great friends. Wish I could turn back time and see them all over again.
Right ✅️
The only Era that matters 👊
Love them or hate them , you have to be honest and admit KISS was a band that was second to absolutely none. Old enough to be a fan since 1974 until now and this video brings back old joy and tears at the same time for me. Brilliant work video editing here Sir, thanks so much for this as it made my day. 👍👏👏👏
You can't beat KISS when they were young and hungry. They were unstoppable. They had something badass that they lost when they got rich.
@@dannystewart1412when the real rockers exited.
@@dannystewart1412na, they still had it or at least some of it cause I've seen them 3x and one was at a club called Back Stage in Houston for like a pre tour for either Hot in the Shade or Revenge. It sat about 800 and they put on a great show but even at The Summit they still put on a very will crafted show. I think it was more they figured out thw formula and then became a little older so you don't have to white hot heat every second
They were way ahead of their time. They set the standard for a live show including the stage set up. There a lot of bands from different genres that have some kind of stairs or steps on stage by the drum riser or somewhere else. The large arena shows with theatrics a bunch of lights and everything else that went it ... all inspired by Kiss. Even if it was a band that hated Kiss.
Imagine if we had RUclips back then? All we had was Cream magazine, the Alive insert, and our imagination.
Now this, is the KISS you wanna see!
Ace Frehley is one of those guys you see playing rare. . . . . . . . . . . . Like VERY rare Gibsons. Like a 70's Les Paul Deluxe with binding on the headstock!
Right
I did. Twice in 1977. Again in 1979. 10 times total. Including their last show in December.
Avatars, be gone!
@@thomaskinne2357and yet they weren’t rare at the time. Gibson was handing them out to rock stars left and right .
I saw them on this tour in Richmond VA in 1975. I was 13 years old and this was my very first concert. We had been listening to their albums already, had dressed as Kiss on Halloween, so we all were in awe at seeing them live. One of my favorite memories from childhood.
You are still a boy
Imagine getting in a time machine today and going back to see the 75-77 era?
Thanks for sharing!!! It brought back some great memories of my own!!!
ye and i was here up in Norway clokkarvik think how awsome that would have been 13(maybe 12) years old., while whathing my dads annoying face when i liked to play my kizz cassete tape on the stereo in the car.
That. Is. The. PERFECT. First. Show.
I ENVY you!...BOSS AF!
...So, who opened for them?
Raw. Real. KISS. Still powerful and amazing 50 years later. Brilliant.
Peter using ludwig drums..... Love the way that kit sounded. You can really hear How lethal Peter was that night? How great all of his fills worth. The only time he didn't use pearl. They were a beast Back then.
The drum sound is fantastic! Peter killed it on this show much like Steven Adler he had that swing once Guns lost Adler, and Kiss lost Peter it was never the same and never as good.
I thought the albums always said "in the credits" that he always used Pearl drums
Peter liked his Ludwigs and asked for an endorsement, but Ludwig passed him over, and he went with Pearl. But you're right - the Ludwigs were better suited for his playing
Just cool seeing this in black n white.
Hahahaha
This is so bad ass that I did not even notice it was in black & white until you just mentioned it!
Reminds of being a kid in the early 80's. TV in my bedroom was a 9" black and white TV and watched Star Trek everyday after school.
"Something off the "new" album Hotter Than Hell"
Those were the days.
Ace on display this era. Early kiss
They worked very hard and it shows here. They were amazing in this era!
Gene isn't even looking at his fretboard when he plays. It's so natural.
The real monsters of rock in the 70's
Captured the imagination of this 7 yo for sure!
I was at this show! It was January 31, 1975 at the famous Winterland in San Francisco, an incredible time to be in San Francisco in general, and the concert was mind blowing. I was 14 and people were openly smoking pot at the show (don’t tell my parents but I was one of them!). I’m so thrilled that this footage exists, it’s too bad it’s not in color because KISS was such a visual experience, but you feel their impact just as good. It’s too bad you can’t replicate how LOUD they were, it was pretty jarring.
SO COOL that you were actually there! A legendary concert, for sure! \m/
lucky you 👍
If I'm not mistaken someone made a colorized version of this show. It was up on RUclips but may have been taken down. It wasn't fully color but "tinted" if I remember correctly. Still was kinda cool.
Brilliant man! Wow! Is this the gig became KISS ALIVE? I know the cover of the album is from the Winterland gig, because before there was the Sex Pistols, there was KISS!!! Gods of Thunder!
They never got any better than this. Ace and Peter made it great. Kiss could not have existed with out them.
Too bad they had drug and alcohol problems
Kiss was amazing with Ace and Peter, Too bad they couldnt handle it.
@@christheghostwriter Peter was forced out of the band for substance abuse problems. But, that was not an issue when he came back for the Reunion Tour. Apparently Gene and Paul didn't think that Ace's drinking was a problem since the tried to convince him not to quit the group.
@@devildriver9615 According to Gene and Paul.
Then they hired Vinnie Vincent who saved their ass from being a dinosaur 70s rock act and crossed them over to 80s metal perfection! KISS could not have existed without him!
The real KISS
Exactly right. Strange that a number of people don't recognize that fact, I guess it doesn't really matter.
👍🥁🥁⚡⚡😾
Yes, the band its good enough!
😊@@RonaldWilliams-lp3bg
Much better days...
To me this will always be the real KISS. 1974-1977 was when they were at their highest peak. They were a tight & powerful live act during this time period. I'm thankful i got to see the original lineup. Saw them in San Francisco 1977 at the Cow Palace. Cheap Trick was the opening act. Awesome concert!!!!!!! 👍🎸
Had the pleasure in Detroit seeing Kiss 3 times, still one of the best stage shows I've ever seen. 74,76,77 I seen them. 70s was the best time to see them before all the controversy started.
I like the kiss band still thanks
Definitely one of the best live rock bands ever!!!

The 70's were a lot of fun!
KISS was a big part of my teenage years! Saw them at the OMNI a few times, they never disappointed! 😝💋
I was lucky enough to be at the Alive 1 show at Cobo Hall, Detroit, and lucky enough to still see them with loved ones on the End of the Road tour, seen them all through the years, and these are the best ones.......they are young, hot, raw, hungry for fame and look what they did and what they became, they will never be forgotten and in the beginning so many said they would never last.
This is KISS when they had TOTAL belief in each other, in doing EXACTLY what they were doing, and where they were headed!
This is KISS as THE, BAR NONE, GREATEST LIVE BAND ON THE PLANET!!!!
World Beaters!!
They sounded so damn good. Ace always gave the band that oomph and Peter that swing. That's the REAL KISS.
This Is KISS .Kiss Army For Life!!!
Hey let’s be honest …these songs are great. They stand the test of time too.
These guys were so young. Back then, you did live albums because your time was up, but Kiss changed that blueprint. That's when San francisco was a great city and how times have changed.
Got this on DVD. Sad thing is though, KISS only played Winterland 3 times, and filmed all 3 shows, but only this one survives as the other 2 were destroyed in a fire of Winterlands archive that also destroyed a lot of other shows by other groups.😢😢😢
"Got to choose"! 73 -76 were the best years. They're gone, but I'm digging on this! I'm glad I was there man.
You want Kiss? This is all you need. A/V both 10. Best songs. Mic drop.
I have never seen this performance. It's incredible
100,000 Years is a gem, A real rocking tune, a reasonable length drum groove demonstration and Paul's rock and roll salvation sermon. I don't think any other band had such a moment. KISS were original. Can't take that away from them.
This is the best that this classic show has ever looked or sounded. Great work, Ken!
This is some of the very best video of, KISS. The very best way that KISS reached to their fans was to put on the very show they thought to give the ultimate ROCK SHOW EVER. I saw them in 1976 the first in Greensboro, NC. Best two years of my life!!!!!! Thank you the original KISS band for being my very first and most happy life. I'm grateful....,
Scott Collins - Probably there with you my brother! Did you get to see them at Dorton Arena in Raleigh? Man, it really was the best of times!!!!
One of the coolest KISS performances & video, of all time.
Something about the way Gene moves & grins, the side headbang...
Ace looking effortlessly cool, and completely in character with his unique persona.
And, man, that solo to "Got to choose," to this day, still takes me back to being 7 years
old and somehow feeling every note, in my body!
One of my favorite Ace solos too.
@@franKENstein620 A really mature solo too, with it's structure, melody & perfect vibrato.
Thank you for posting all this amazing stuff, man!
They look a little dangerous too. Like the Stones on Sticky Fingers😅
I have no clue why KISS has not hire you for their board remixes, and everything else for that matter. Maybe the new company should give you a call. WOW! Great stuff!!
This looks and sounds amazing. Synced perfectly.
This was a great time for Kiss they were raring to go and sounded great. This video and audio is fantastic as well. 👌🏼
Damn!..Sounds Bitchn!….1974,.I was 7,.one night my dad came home from band practice’he gigged with Bo Diddley,Chuck Berry ,B.B.King,.he wanted me to listen to a record,.no information whatsoever..he wanted me to just listen… I listened and loved iT!..he then showed me the First KISS ALBUM Cover,.everything immediately shifted in my life!…the world went from color to Black ,White n’Silver,..i was supposed to be at this gig,.my dad waited till 76,.Anaheim Stadium..changed my life forever..I’ve seen every so-cal tour since…X
Peter Criss is AweSOMe in this concert. Mr fRANkie you did an amazing job with KISS sounding true to their concerts.
Drumming his ass off!!
Thank you so much to franKENstein for the detailed quality work on audio and video, and thanks to all those everywhere behind the modern technologies, I really enjoyed this piece of rock history after 49years, today, at home, in Japan!
this deserves a screening on a massive movie screen with a huge soundsystem 😊
I was born on this exact year.. i discovered KISS Alive as a young kid and Loved their Songs becoming a real Kiss fan since day one... Thank You for this great gift to us !!!❤
I was born 1950, a youngster, not even preteen during this decade, but I had older cousins born right after WWII, this was their generation. Mine was the 60's. But I love this music because they listened to this.
Astonishing work! Well done. Best video I have ever seen of KISS. Thanks for taking this 62 year old back to his childhood.
To the Creator, your labors produced an exceptional version of this concert. Most of the world has no idea how much time it takes to edit film. Bravo!
Thanks!
Seen them in the early days. Seen them and Aerosmith tour one year. The best was the reunion at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. 🎉❤
This was the Kiss I saw live in Cleveland, June 1975; great show!
This is the best sounding KISS from this era that I have heard. When I was 10-13 I played almost nothing but KISS ALIVE over and over again. PC inspired me to become a drummer. Peter is spot on, tasteful and a great showman here. Cheers FrankENstein!
WOW, incredible clean up job on this both visually and sound quality wise! Amazing....
49 years gone past. Never to return but we have these intense memories of when rock was real and KISS was at the top. I am just glad I was around in those times and can still feel the reality of their performance. If you weren’t around in those days, pay attention to the videos and dial your brains in deep. You’ll get a small taste of what music was back then.
Time goes by too fast.
Now this is classic kiss the real kiss 🥁🥁🎸🎸🎸⚡⚡
The only KISS.
Read through the description, amazing work. Loving this
Showmanship, rock in roll and sounding perfect! KISS. Thanks for putting this out
What these great videos don't tell you is how brutally loud these guys were. I saw them three times during this era, each time louder than the last.
After the '76 show, the local paper described the experience as being run over by a Panzer division.
They were vicious
BOC was extremely loud too. And my ears are still ringing from AC/DC in 2009.....
@@johndef5075 Mine too from Kiss in Melbourne 1980, Deep Purple Melbourne 1984, and AC/DC 1988 at the tennis centre Melbourne Australia! Great times. Only new my car was running by looking at the tachometer!
LOUDEST Neil Young and Sonic Youth in Portland Oregon 1991 the concession stands actually sold foamy earplugs ! but KISS for The Destroyer Tour in Kansas City as a 14 year old with my father EPIC ! 😊
La simpleza de los comienzos. Por siempre KISS. Los llevo impregnado en mi corazon y alma!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Dude!!...Great JOB!!!! Thank you for sharing your hard work with the world so others may enjoy one of the greatest bands the world has ever known!!!💪🤘
This is early Kiss when they were hungry, lean and mean. Before they got famous and rich. The music is so raw and aggressive which is what I like best! They were on fire and had a lot to prove. They wanted to headline and sell out stadiums. They had a lot to prove and they did by touring and finally they broke through in 1976 the millennial year and Tour. I remember the Millennial Poster! They released Destroyer and the big ballad hit Beth. Finally they were Headliners! The Alive 1 and double albums really sold Kiss because they were a live band! Live they were exciting and explosive! I’ll never forget when I opened that gatefold from Alive 2 and saw that photo from the Stage! It was amazing and I said I’ve got to see this band live! I finally did later for the Reunion 96 Tour and I was thrilled finally to see Ace and Peter live☺️! They put on a great show!
Bi-centennial year
This is the Kiss I was lucky enough to see in Baltimore 1975. 15 rows from the front on the floor. Ace killing it on lead guitar and looking so damn cool on stage. Fantastic teenage time!
Amazing work! !!! Thank you!!
Love the single pickup Firebird that Paul is playing
Wow ! To the extent you went through to mix everything from several different sources and for it to sound this good and synced so precisely to the live video footage is a unbelievable feat in itself .am completely blown away with every aspect you've created here .Kiss Alive was my first record ever which my mother bought me for my 10th birthday Sept 20th 1975 just a little over a week after the Kiss Alive albums release .I just walked in a record store in the mall and started looking through records and ran across this album cover with 4 dudes looking Ike aliens dressed up and make-up on wearing 12 inch platform boots and I knew this was the record I wanted .lol drove my family crazy playing it none stop for hours on end daily lol thanks for the video really took me back to my youth
So glad you appreciate it! :-)
I turned ten nine days after you, got to see them two years later in Chicago, it was amazing.
All I can say is thank you! From a 47 year old that Kiss music saved his life.
The KISS that made me a fan.🤘 It was great growing up in the 70's and 80's.
Gone by days 😮
Excellent show in back in the day San Fran. Rock on!
Pure raw Balls out Rock'N'Roll !
KISS before the rot set in. The simple candle set-up is much more effective than the subsequent overblown SUPER-KISS stage with the pneumatic lifts, massive lighting truss, relentless mega-pyro, Vegas costumes, etc, as the focus was where it belonged: on the music. Speaking of which--superb sound mix on this video.
franKENstein Creations... such a hard work on the video and audio edition could only be accomplished by a true and loyal kiss fan. I thank you.
This looks and sounds better than the copy I saw in the mid 80s.
Wonderful!! My absolute favorite clip of KISS. Thanks for working on it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I am working on Largo ‘79, Sydney ‘80 and Rio ‘83 in this same style. Eventually Tokyo ‘77 and Houston ‘77 as well. Plus a few more TV appearances and more.
No matter how much Gene doesn't like it, the original line-up with Peter and Ace was is the best!
First saw them in '76 in Jacksonville, FL with Uriah Heep as the opener. It was an absolute spectacle. The one thing I forgot was how well rehearsed KISS was. Their show was airtight, musically and theatrically. They were always right on the money, and that is what set them apart. They're show was outrageous, but their delivery was machine-like. Truly a force to be reckoned with...💋
Thats wild
Saw KISS open for Heep on Aug. 28th, 1975. Had never heard 1 song. First reaction...WTF???
This video quality is unbelievable !!! Thank you for such amazing work !

I saw them in a bowling alley in 1976 in my hometown I met them face to face at the bowling alley with no makeup on it was way cool to see them without makeup they didn't have no mask on you can tell who they were and they were actually bowling and then we went to the concert the following night 1876 I was 16 years old I had a good time rock on ✌❤😁
The hottest band in the world for 50 years straight.
