  • Hi There! Here's a brief spraying and back-rolling Tutorial/Instructional video I was able to put together and share with anyone interested in the process for interior walls.
    As you all should know, in the building trades and many occupations.... people have different ways of doing tasks... what I show in this video, is just how we happened to accomplish the task, that particular day. Many painters accomplish it differently, including us sometimes. I do have my favorite rolling technique and my preferences on spray technique. Other people are free to paint as they choose, so please keep comments civil and respectful.
    Today's interior job is applying low sheen paint (Edgecomb Grey) to the walls on this new construction home. The texture is "orange peel" texture and has been primed already with tinted primer.
    I prefer to use a 621 spray tip since it will put paint on faster, so the sprayer's job is easier and the back-roller won't have to wait as the paint is being applied.
    Starting out is where some people stumble... you should pre-wet
    the 18 inch roller to the core before you start spraying, and make sure that enough paint is being applied from the very start. After a few walls or a room, the sprayer and backroller will have adjusted to make the process work well.
    I don't talk about roller brands, or equipment brands, simply because it isn't relevant to learning this process. Sure it's important to use a quality roller cover (ask your local paint store if in doubt), and the size nap is important. 3/4" for orange peel and thicker texures, 1/2", 9/16", or 3/8" nap for small texuture, and smoothwall surfaces.
    It's also important to use a pump that will put out enough paint to use a 619, or 621 tip, roughly .6 - .7 gallons per minute or more.
    Some tips. work as a team, of course. The spray guy should have experience in this field, or learn really fast about spray techniques and how much paint to apply.
    When in doubt, hire a professional painter. Paint sprayers SHOULD NOT be used by anyone that doesn't FULLY understand the operation instructions and procedures, and the RISK OF INJURY to themselves and others.
    PAINT SPRAYERS OPERATE AT UPWARDS OF 3000 psi for this type of work and can cause paint injection into the skin, leading to severe damage and emergency surgery TO CLEAN OUT PAINT FROM THE BLOODSTREAM AND BODY.
    I make videos to teach people who want to learn, but also, I do it to represent Residential House Painters and show what we do in our profession. To show clients, and others, how much work goes into completing full home paint jobs. (and I don't show ALL the work of course).

    Hi I do new construction in the UK. I've been spraying walls to a finish but I'm now on a site that wants them back rolled. My question is when your doing this alone would you just spray one room at a time and roll? Or will it dry too quick?

    • @XCPainter

      For our substrates (new drywall mud/tape, even primed) it tends to dry in super fast, so I have a hard time backrolling a big wall or ceiling sections properly.
      Can do it, but it's like going through the motions, but not effective though.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  4 года назад +2

      Hi, short answer is it's certainly possible to do a nice spray finish without backrolling.
      It all depends on how smooth your surface or existing coatings are, what results you are looking for, and if you are able to spray a nice finish. An example: if you have to prime over raw wood, a backroll with a 1/4" × 6" mini roller would help to work primer into the wood and roll it even. . but with topcoats I'd probably just spray with a 308 or 410FF tip

  • @barstow611
    @barstow611 8 месяцев назад +1

    Curious with this method do you have to put a second coat on? Or does the backrolling do the job?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  8 месяцев назад

      2 coats is recommended, I always strive for best practices as a solo painter/business owner... (in these videos I worked as an employee, builder only goes with 1 topcoat) but realistically in some spec home situations only 1 coat is budgeted for money and time wise.
      In these houses with beige walls "Edgecomb grey" we tinted the primer to that, did 1 solid wet top coat, backrolled and sometimes fog coat after, sometimes not, they always turn out well, with Flat sheen paint and even low lustre.

      Rub your hand across a wall with new finished drywall. The joint compound is very smooth the Sheetrock has an almost fuzzy like Texture on it. It’s 2 different textures when you backroll you create 1 consistent texture and that’s what backrolling does is create a uniform finish

    So, serious question....what is the advantage of spraying, if you have to roll it anyway?

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  8 месяцев назад

      The advantage of spraying can be situational... so in the case of new construction spec homes, and with orange peel texture, it is so much easier, effective and efficient to spray the paint on and backroll instead of manually brushing or rolling every corner, bottom and top of wall, dipping hundreds of times considering the massive amount of drywall area and coats of products needed.
      We can spray out this interior in 5 - 6 man hours max... if we brushed and rolled this 3 story home requiring 2 coats, it would take 40 plus man hours

    • @wolololer
      @wolololer 2 месяца назад

      @@XCPainter So the advantage is just doing the corners faster?
      I could be wrong, but I feel like i could paint just as fast with 2 man brushing and rolling on a regular 4 corner walls room, it would be cleaner, healthier cause no pray in the air, require less prep work and less cleaning of the tools after process.
      I allways thought just spraying would be enough, if u include a second man for the backroll, it starts to look inefective to me

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  2 года назад +4

      We sometimes paint the ceilings last when we're addressing many ceilings or rooms because we can spray them. Also it changes the process in new construction homes so we can spray and roll walls very easily, then mask and spray ceilings.
      If we paint ceilings first...we would most likely be left to brush and roll all the walls, cutting in the ceilings. That requires two full coats of paint, and on an empty new construction home, particularly a spec home, that takes entirely way too much time, effort, and paint.
      Masking and spraying ceilings also gives incredible paint lines if you mask well.
      The plastic should reach the floor so no ceiling paint gets on the walls.

  • @Tedrins
    @Tedrins 5 лет назад +2

    Is this how you guys do new housing?
    Is that the final wall coat?
    I assume you then mask off the walls and spray the ceilings. Final step is to spray the trim pack when it is hung? Don't the carpenters scratch up the walls? I was wondering why you taped the walls (and creasing the paper) to spray the trim. I'm guessing that the walls are finished at that stage.
    Also, don't the floor guys, electricians and carpet guys scratch up the walls & ceilings? The electricians always make marks when putting in pot lights. The carpet guys lay the carpet on the wall and then cut it. The floor guys always get fast set or something on the walls.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  5 лет назад +1

      Yes this is the final coat besides touch ups. The other trades aren't too bad on the walls except for making dust inside. Walls are cleaned and touched up as needed by the builder's employee. We only fix what we are responsible for.

    • @XCPainter
      @XCPainter  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for asking.
      To spray or not to spray can be situational, with the amount of area to cover, allowable timeframe for the work, and of course, the logistics of different methods and how they turn out.
      These homes are 3 story new construction spec homes, with orange peel texture drywall.
      That would require a whole lot of cutting and rolling, lots of paint going on 3 floors, and double that with 2 coats.
      Also, spray priming before and after texture makes for even more work, but it's feasible with spraying
      The spray production method (in this situation) is just so much faster, easier, effective.
      We masked, sprayed and rolled topcoat on walls in this home in 2.5 hours.
      Next day, masked walls and sprayed ceilings 2 coats in a day or 2.
