- Should i back roll the walls. In this video I will show you how to back roll walls and why it should be done. Back rolling is also known as how to lay off walls which is done to smooth out the orange peel affect from the roller. Should walls be back rolled, yes they should.

After watching all of your videos I painted our 1300 sq ft condo, including all ceilings, doors & trim, with excellent results.
Good to hear, that's why i created this channel, to help people like yourself do their own painting and do it properly. Hiring someone like me is expensive for a first time home owner or a young family starting out so I made these video's to help those who can't afford to hire someone to do it for them. You may or may not have notice but I have never promoted my business because it always been about helping people like you.

How long did it take you?
My floor plan was complex and there was quite a lot of trim ~ crown, baseboards, window & door casings, doors. The prep work took the longest as both the trim and the drywall needed a fair amount of repair and sanding. Mind you, the house was EMPTY and it still took WEEKS. There is NO WAY to do the whole place while you live in it ~ NO WAY. You got to get out, or do it before you move in.
@@johng9562 thanks for yoyr reply
Mate, you're a bloody legend. Stuffed up my wall and found your videos. Keep it up!
Glad I could help..

I was not convinced that back-rolling had any real benefit until I saw this video. The difference is very noticeable. Thank you for the useful instruction without any BS. I'm a believer now.
Now your a believer, it's good to hear I converted you.

Absolutely a waste of time. You never have to back roll flat paint, especially primer. This is laughable.
Dry walls are thirsty aren`t they ? Love your videos even after all these years i still go back to them :)
Yes they are thirsty and good to hear you still come back to watch them.

Perfect Couldn't get any simpler than that. Some will over think and work the job, Let the roller do the work consistent anod easy
Thanks for your comment and yes let the roller do the work.

I'm ready to paint my bedrooms. How do I know what nap roller to get? You're helping to build my confidence in painting. Thanks for sharing!
For walls I would normally use between 12 - 18 mm nap so maybe a 15 might be the go.

Awesome video mate, at anytime would you recommend wetting the roller during the laying off stage?
No, never run the roller completely dry of paint and it will be fine.

Thx good video. Is the paint diluted with water/floetrol? What primer/sealer do you normally use for new walls?
Yes for new work I do add about 10% water so it soaks in and I normally use an acrylic sealer undercoat.

Miss your videos mate. I go back and watch them sometimes 😁 hope all is well 👍
I should have another one up later today or tomorrow, just get busy and don't have enough spare time to upload.
@@howtopaintinfo that's a good complaint mate. I'm looking forward to it 👍👍
I've tried to back roll the walls but I'm left with streaks and roller marks? Also, do you have to break down a large wall into smaller sections to apply the back rolling technique?
Yes you can break it down to smaller sections, it all depends on weather conditions and how long the paint is taking to dry. So try working in smaller sections making sure there is no strong breeze blowing by as that will dry the paint quicker. Also don't go too thin with the paint as it will dry too quick and you won't have time to back roll.

How do you avoid the stipple texture, when laying off the paint. I find laying it off lifts the paint up to leave a texture?
Do you use this technique when doing ceiling too. Thanks.
Maybe you are letting the paint dry too much before laying it off, try laying off as you go and yes I do have a ceiling video. ruclips.net/video/uz2WR8APzdc/видео.html

Thanks, how dry is your roller when you do the laying off?
It would be ready for another dip in the paint but you should never force all the paint out the roller, there should always be a bit in it.
I noticed going over a small section on my bedroom wall it turned out with some marks & isn’t coloured in properly.
The wall was originally done 2 years ago.
I just wanted to repaint the small section with the same paint but I didn’t use a roller just a paint brush.
Do I need to repaint the whole section of that wall? as the new paint may look slightly different to the original wall paint that has been settled 2 years ago?
Yes you should repaint the complete wall to avoid any colour variation due to the age of the paint.

Should you also sand in between coats? So after the first coat, should you wait for it to dry then sand once more before you add a second coat so the finish looks a lot more smoother?
Also I seen a video where they say you should use sponge with sugar soap to wash the wall or where original marks were before repainting?
I’ve painted my wall with two coats of dark paint but u can still see roller lines, is there anything I can do?
Depending on how bad they are, you may need to sand them out or if not too raised you might get away with another coat of paint to hide them.

You mentioned 'orange peel,' which makes me grit my teeth because I am re-painting walls that were previously badly painted - and as a result have more orange peel than I would like. Without applying mud/sanding/etc, is it sometimes possible to reduce the orange peel (for example by using a good primer and finish paint)? Thanks!
Once orange peel it there it is hard to get rid of but hopefully will look better with every coat of paint you put over it as it will fill the surface slightly. You can give it a sand first, this might help remove some of the peaks of the paint. Also there are some high build paints on the market they may help.

I use a sander to take the peaks off. Works well but hard for larger areas.
@@joeschmoe6021 thanks!
Back rolling on a huge ceiling is like impossible especially with lots of light natural light at that. It always leaves a darker shade or pulls the paint causing you to have to roll back and off of your overlap vs back rolling off of it 😤I haven’t figured how to do huge ceilings without some imperfections and been rolling for years now small normal ceilings and walls no problem .
It can some times be the paint you are using, I have found some ceiling paints dry without showing overlap marks and others show almost all overlap marks and they are all flat finishes. Maybe try a different brand of ceiling paint that might help.

what paint are you rolling on there? is it a latex or pva primer?
The paint I used here would have been an acrylic paint.

I prefer the PVA It's made to lock down new drywall :-)
Arthur Morehead cheap too
What brush do you use for oil base enamelling
I do use synthetic brushes now rather then hog bristle brushes.

Rota Cota excel 2
What pile roller sleeve are you using
I think it was a lambswool 14 mm nap sleeve.

It's that primer or paint?
It's primer.

That what primer n sealer design for , to seal up brand new plaster board n mud join!!!!!
Yes, to soak in and seal the surface, its also generally easy to sand.

What nap roller u using there mate
Not sure but I would say it would have been about a 15 mm nap,

That’s too heavy for walls, you need a 11mm, use a microfibre on new walls for a better finish
Do I backroll first and second coat ?
Back rolling is something you do for every coat.

Should I use paint extender because of my paint is drying very fast. I live in a very dry climate.
You can or you could also try starting early in the morning to beat the heat.

I did a crummy job painting a room a few months back, and left too much orange peel. How do I fix it now, without mudding? Can I just sand the walls, and repaint?
Yes you can just sand it but depending on how bad it is it might be easier to put a skim coat of top coat over wall.

But now youre pulling paint off with dry roller. I think if you just left it , it would level out smooth. If not just sand it. Its just primer.
No it doesn't pull the paint off as it is new plaster board and its soaking in. All the back rolling does is level the paint out as I do put plenty on. You can sand it and I do but if you leave heavy orange peel then it would be a hard job to get it back smooth.

And roller marks from going over it too much ?
I don't think so sunshine.

Always backroll, you will end up with a much better finish and touch ups are much easier.
Yes it does.

i find doing this makes it look more messy as you're rolling over a bit that's already started to dry.
Make sure it is still wet, try using more paint.

Then you didn't apply enough paint
@@ThouArtOfWar0724 Doesn't matter how much paint i apply, it still does it. believe me i've tried everything. Maybe uk paint is just shit.

Your sliding across with the roller. In all my days wtf 😒 how is that ever going to look nice
It's all about how you finished off, as long as it's back rolled then it will be fine.
