My thoughts, also. Stuff this good, sometimes better, is exactly what to expect from The Allman Brothers. On almost all of their recordings, listen as many times as you want, and you can hear something different and great, every time you listen to it. Jessica and Rambling Man, I believe were their first hit, charting, songs and big selling singles.

Truly a wonderfully melodical instrumental by one of the most underrated American bands. There is a video taken from a live performance back in '81 where the band opens with this song, and watching everyone interplay with each other might help you to understand just how much in tune this band was...I believe the show was in Jacksonville. It was an outdoor venue.
The Allman Brother's Band was kinda schizophrenic. Their studio recordings were tight, but when (if) you saw them live, they were really a jam band of the highest order...taking a musical theme and stretching it to it's utmost. Both versions of the band were greatly entertaining, and even to this day, the ABB hits my playlist on a regular basis.

Definitely! What’s cool is the song isn’t about Melissa. It’s about a man’s undying, resilient love for her. It’s about the unnamed man. Gregg didn’t have a name for the woman for a long time. Then in the middle of the night at a grocery store a mother was chasing around her cute rambunctious daughter, named Melissa.

Quite a show, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willy.
Here's another Nashville fact for ya, who were the first group of singers, leaving out of Nashville, to tour the world spreading their music?

Actually, the first members first met in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. That’s where the original roots of the band formed. Duane then followed Berry Oakley down to Jacksonville, FL trying to convince him to join. That’s when he met Dickey and Butch, who were in a band with Berry. They set up at Butch’s house in Jacksonville. Then went to Macon bc of Capricorn Studios hq there. So, to me, they kind of embody the South and are just from “the South”.

I’m not quite clear what is meant by “I wasn’t expecting this from the Allman Brothers”. Was it the instrumental form of the song? The prominence of Chuck Leavell’s rollicking energetic piano in the song? I’m gonna guess that it might actually have been the song’s tremendously upbeat, joyous feel, as the ABB was well known for their blues-driven origins and intense early songs. In light of their history, Jessica is what I would call “unblues”. They never lost their blues influence, but Dickie Betts brought a whole new dimension to their music with this and other songs after the shattering loss of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.
