Dickey Betts wrote this song to try to capture the joy of his daughter Jessica as a toddler crawling, playing and laughing around the living room floor.
Not true. Was written about a groupie that Allman knew named Jessica
@@danielgerald4551 You're the mistaken one. "He named it after his daughter, Jessica Betts, who was an infant when it was released. She had bounced along to the song's rhythm, and Betts attempted to capture her attitude with its melody."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_(instrumental)
Along with 6 other sources saying the same. Not one backing your claim.
@@doomhunter697 can I see these other sources please??
@@danielgerald4551 Just google it, this is not the place for debate.
@@danielgerald4551 It's in multiple books, including Brothers From The Road. It was a tribute to Dickey's daughter and he based the instrumental on the playing of Django Reinhardt.
"Not expecting this from the Allman Brothers", I have been listening to their music for 50 years and this is the Allman Brothers Band.
Exactly correct!
My thoughts, also. Stuff this good, sometimes better, is exactly what to expect from The Allman Brothers. On almost all of their recordings, listen as many times as you want, and you can hear something different and great, every time you listen to it. Jessica and Rambling Man, I believe were their first hit, charting, songs and big selling singles.
It's awfully hard to beat The Allman Bros Band when it comes to just plain jamming out and keepin' ya groovin' along with them.
Agreed
This is what pure joy sounds like...
For me it's this song and their song called "Revival."
You cannot be sad when you listen to this song.
This is one of those songs that just make you happy.
Apologies if you've already heard these but In Memory of Elizabeth Reid and Blue Sky are a couple of amazing instrumentals. Actually Blue Sky has a few lyrics but you hardly notice them.
Extra kudos to Dicky Betts on guitar and Chuck Leavell on piano.
Dickey Betts wrote the song it's named after his Daughter. This man is a master when it came to writing instrumentals. Elizabeth Reed and High Falls are two others that come to other of his great instrumentals.
It's the late Dicky Betts ..he passed away recently.RIP Dicky .Gregg, and Duane Allman
This was Allman Brothers at their best. Jessica, Melissa, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Little Martha are instrumentally superb.
Revival!
Song is precious to me. It was my late husband's ringtone on my phone.
This song is the best live jam!
Saw them twice ('81, '97), at the greatest Live Concert venue in the World... Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, CO.
Great reaction guys - most reactors wouldn't take on an instrumental. Keep on doin' what you're doin'. BTW - Allman Bros were one of the greatest jam bands ever.
The GREATEST American band. Hands down. They are on a plain all their own
this band did not fail at instrumentals. at all.
It’s a vibe. What a most beautiful way to express a name by making it sound like a “festival!” 😊
Great song; can't go wrong with the Allman Brothers. Dickey Betts and Chuck Leavell are so good on this.
Love this song and the Allman Brothers. Great music!! 😅
This band. So many good songs. Whipping post. Rambling man. Old before my time....
Soul shine..
Top Gear used this for their theme song. It came on the radio yesterday and my wife didn't realize it was an Allman Brothers song.
If this song comes on while I'm driving, it's good for another 100 miles.
Um, there was a Jack Pearson who was a member of ABB….🤔
@@jeffking887 true!! Sadly it was not me.
Truly a wonderfully melodical instrumental by one of the most underrated American bands. There is a video taken from a live performance back in '81 where the band opens with this song, and watching everyone interplay with each other might help you to understand just how much in tune this band was...I believe the show was in Jacksonville. It was an outdoor venue.
The Allman Brother's Band was kinda schizophrenic. Their studio recordings were tight, but when (if) you saw them live, they were really a jam band of the highest order...taking a musical theme and stretching it to it's utmost. Both versions of the band were greatly entertaining, and even to this day, the ABB hits my playlist on a regular basis.
This song was always playing when springtime came riding in our 69 Camaro, midnight blue flip-flop with glass packs. Best feeling
Consider that all these guys were in their early to mid twenties when they recorded this. Chuck Leavell, the piano player and newcomer to the band, was barely 20.
Top Gear theme Goated
Some Say !!!!!!! 😎👍
What geniuses. This is sweet candy to my ears.
I'm sure you've done Whipping Post but Dreams and Elizabeth Reed are brilliant in their own way.
Love this song.
A lot of people were introduced to this song via the show Top Gear UK back in the 90’s…
raised on this song long ago. Great band and big part of my upbringing music.
Love this song! If ya get a chance, listen to the album Brothers and Sisters.
My favorite album. It's loaded with great tracks.
You guys have excellent taste
Such a masterpiece. Written about a little girl playing in the yard.
TONIGHT ON TOP GEAR!
Top 5 here. My daughter Melissa would be Jessica if my cousin didn’t get there first.
Sweet Melissa is a beautiful Allman Brothers song.
Definitely! What’s cool is the song isn’t about Melissa. It’s about a man’s undying, resilient love for her. It’s about the unnamed man. Gregg didn’t have a name for the woman for a long time. Then in the middle of the night at a grocery store a mother was chasing around her cute rambunctious daughter, named Melissa.
@@jasonbechtol7580 LOL I saw my 1st Allman Brothers concert at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville Tennessee July 1971. Just a few months before Duane died. The Bros. had half their family on stage with them. Come to think of it, wasn't far from where they grew up.
Quite a show, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willy.
Here's another Nashville fact for ya, who were the first group of singers, leaving out of Nashville, to tour the world spreading their music?
Wasn't country music, but gospel. Fisk Jubilee Singers and they sang for Queen Victoria!
A lot of women named Jessica or Melissa that are in their 50’s I suspect
@@jeffking887 mid to early forties is more likely. I've got 2 cousins who named their daughters Melissa. Never put it together before but it's probably a G.A. thing
There's a video of them doing this on Letterman, it's always a blast to see them perform live.
It's my theory that this song is the reason so many girls born in the late '70's were named Jessica. It's where I got my daughter's name.
It's where I got my daughter's name too.
Great reaction!
I use to call my dog Jefferson by playing 3 notes on my guitar and saying her name and later just playing the notes. Makes me sad now to play these notes .
So many little girls named Jessica because of this song.(Concieved also.)
My favorite instrumental of all time❤
It's got to be heartening, having us old folks appreciate your reactions to our lives. Remember: Growing old is mandatory, but becoming mature is optional.
They are THE BEST!!
The soundtrack to backyard cookouts all across the south....I love the Allman Brothers
You won't hear Jessica in the song. Dickey played the riff to try to explain her smile when she crawled into the room where he was playing guitar.
Love this song. Used to play it and dance around with my granddaughter Jessi when she was little 😊
Definately my favorite kareoke song!!!!
Oh
Yeah!
Definately my favorite tune ever!
Also.
Named my daughter Melissa after the A B tune by thst name.
No vocals. Still rocking down with Duane and Greg 🙏😢
Such a great Band.
The Allman Brothers are known for their Southern Blues style rock like "Whipping Post," "Come and Go Blues," and "Stormy Monday." However, they also had some Country Rock songs like "Jessica," "Rambling Man," and "Blue Sky."
Another Allman Bros tune you might like is Revival (love is everywhere)
Named my daughter for this song because it makes me happy from the first time I heard it.
Love you guys! Blue Sky. Allman brothers.
Allman Brothers music condones a beautiful state of mind. If Jesus was walking the earth today, he’d be an ABB fan.
RIP to Dickey Betts of ABB! He wrote Jessica.
Great Georgia band who never forgot their roots.
Well, they're from Jacksonville, Fl.
Actually, the first members first met in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. That’s where the original roots of the band formed. Duane then followed Berry Oakley down to Jacksonville, FL trying to convince him to join. That’s when he met Dickey and Butch, who were in a band with Berry. They set up at Butch’s house in Jacksonville. Then went to Macon bc of Capricorn Studios hq there. So, to me, they kind of embody the South and are just from “the South”.
Both Duane and Gregory were born and raised in Nashville Tennessee.
All timer , this one .
More , please & thank you !
i love this song and its s close to Cuban Clave as you can get with the percussion.
Sweet groove and vibe… any girl named Jessica had instant credibility with me after this song. Allmans were firing on all cylinders here.
Beautiful guitar
can't hold still!!!! 😆
Rick Derringer - Sittin' By The Pool. TNT and your member's wont regret it.
One of Rock’s greatest instrumentals
LETS GOOOO
I wish someone could remake with some words 1 time
Master jam. Takes you for a ride.
I kinda felt like Chuck's tremendously iconic piano solo and then Dickey's final soaring solos just flew on my you. That's when most people are practically breathless. Listen to it again.
Not der “ thang”.
“ We’re just different”- Ak Nation.
How do you not listen to the end of the song? Are you a DJ from the 80's? Damn.
They’re be blatt!
Monolith! Regardless of income level.
Hello from Michigan. Records kikk butt. Love you folks.
RIP Mr. Dicky Betts 😢🎉🎵🎶🎵🎶
This is what we called “music to boogie to” and get high to
Not necessarily in that order😵💫
Two words: FOOT STOMPIN
Fellow Georgia boys. This song captures the magic of driving with windows open down a Georgia back road.
Rest in Peace Dickey Betts
Jessica makes him feel like that.
Let the Allman Brothers take you to church, react to their song "Revival!"
Tahoka Freeway did a kick-ass cover of this, Live and Loud is soooo good
It’s TOP GEAR! See what I did there?
80mph down the road cruising.
Cutting it short?
IKR?
I’m not quite clear what is meant by “I wasn’t expecting this from the Allman Brothers”. Was it the instrumental form of the song? The prominence of Chuck Leavell’s rollicking energetic piano in the song? I’m gonna guess that it might actually have been the song’s tremendously upbeat, joyous feel, as the ABB was well known for their blues-driven origins and intense early songs. In light of their history, Jessica is what I would call “unblues”. They never lost their blues influence, but Dickie Betts brought a whole new dimension to their music with this and other songs after the shattering loss of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.
Is it just me or does thos sound like an upbeat song from Peanuts. Like a southern jazz version
legendary tv series bbc top gear
Why did you end the video before the song was over? Were you tired of it? Would you walk out of a live performance?
The energy, groove, sense of phrasing and arrangement made the Allman Brothers Band won of the very best. Why didn't you let it play to the end? I'm going to find Jessica in another clip and listen to it all.
I agree.
You should listen to a band called CHVRCHES yes with a V and there songs called ( Clearest Blue / Miracle )
Cruisin' on the freeway music ....IMO
Watch Dicky do this live!
And on that bombshell...
Some Say !!!!!!!🥃✌️
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Well finish the song.
I haven’t seen anyone react to Revival by the Allman Brothers. Be the first.
No it said george
The bass line takes it home on this one.....
