Yes, Gregg and Duane were brothers. Gregg, vocals and keyboards and Duane lead guitar. This song was recorded in 1971 shortly after Duane’s death from a motorcycle accident. That’s Dickey Betts doing the lead guitar work. Duane and Dickey were pioneers of the double lead guitar sound. And Gregg Allman, one of the best white blues singers of all time!

Somehow, when I turned 15 in 1971, I was lucky to have a friend of my moms get tickets to The Grateful Dead for my birthday at The Fillmore East, NYC. And, the DEBUT ACT opening for them was a new band, The Allman Brothers. I remember how the crowd reacted, how they sounded, and a new star was born. ❤ And, a new light show…The Joshua Light Show…very psychedelic at the time!

Great rock band from the 70's that mixed blues, jazz & country music in their sound. They had lots of great songs such as "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", "Whipping Post", "Blue Sky", "Ramblin' Man" etc. One of my favorites is their instrumental "Jessica" which was written by guitarist Dickey Betts & named after his daughter.

Gypsies, refers to the Romani people originally from south east Asia who were known to have an itinerant life style. We often refer to a person (M or F) who just can’t stay put, as a gypsy. Eat a Peach.

Yes, Gypsies is an old, derogatory name for Romani people who travelled from India to Europe. The term “Gypsy” comes from Egypt, where they were incorrectly dubbed. The term is a pejorative slur saying the they were thieves and cutthroats.

@@KindCountsDeb3773 You are right and it's one of the sad examples of how things snowball. From memory, they were pushed out of India due to constant warfare in the area and ended up in Islamic territory. They wouldn't convert so couldn't own land and so had to concentrate on becoming craftsmen. But then they ended up being effectively enslaved as the local rules valued their skills to much to let them leave. As they wandered they were never accepted, never allowed to own land or settle down, never being tolerated anywhere they went. And, in this environment, why would they have any respect for other people or their property? And, when they are thieves and con artists with no loyalty to your country, why would you tolerate their presence in your country? Positive feedback loop. Pretty common and very sad.

Love! Love! Love this Song! Checkout my all-time fave from these guys, Soulshine. The video itself answered a lot of your questions. But, Gregg and Duane were the brothers that the band took it's name from. Duane was an excellent guitarist among great guitarists like Eric Clapton, who he played with in the band Derek and the Dominos on the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Checkout the title track "Layla." Also, checkout more songs by Eric Clapton( my fave guitarist) like "The Core" a track from his Slowhand album. Duane died in a motorcycle crash in 1971 (RIP) And, Gregg carried on The Allman Brothers legacy until his death from liver cancer in 2017 (RIP). And, finally, that is a peach on the actual cover of their iconish album Eat a Peach.

---- The Allman Brothers Band effectively created Southern rock blues with a hint of jazz. Their live shows featured jam band-style improvisation and instrumentals
---- Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (founder, slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums)
---- Other songs from them include Whipping Post, Ramblin' Man, Midnight Rider, and Black Hearted Woman
---- Their 1971 Live at Fillmore East is considered one of the best live albums ever
---- Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971 and Melissa was on the Eat A Peach album released after his death with the album dedicated to Duane's memory
---- On November 11, 1972, bassist Berry Oakley also died of a motorcycle accident
---- Come 1976, the band initially ended, then briefly came back and then broke up again in 1982. Then in 1989 The Allman Brothers Band re-formed and released a bunch of albums and toured
---- Among the new musicians in 1989 was guitarist Warren Haynes who later co-founded (along with bassist Allen Woody) the Southern rock jam band Gov't Mule in 1994 as a side project to The Allman Brothers Band. Gov't Mule still plays today, has released 25 albums, and is considered one of the greatest jam bands ever
---- As a side note, Warren Haynes is considered one of the greatest guitarists and my old brother-in-law, Lincoln Schleifer, is a bassist that has played a lot with Warren including on Warren's first solo album, Tales of Ordinary Madness, and was the bassist with Warren on the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration tours 2013 to 2016

Greg had the perfect soulful voice and man can he write a song. I've seen so many ABB concerts that I can't even count the times. The only thing that I regret is not seeing them in the original lineup. I was too young. Duane his younger brother was if not the best slide guitar player, he was without a doubt one of the best. He died way too young and was way ahead of his time. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the picture slides of the video, it is just seanery to try and go along with the song much later then when the song first came out. Great reaction, great song, but this is just the beginning of the bands greatness. The ABB could do it all not just southern rock, the can dish out the blues and even jazz it up with the many songs they have done. From ballads
to 30 minute instamentals lol. They are a Jam Band at heart and don't care about a 3 minute song that record
companies were trying to do at the time. There is no 3 minute song by them. They are the type of band to listen
to the whole album A to B.

Back then we spent a lot of our time outdoors and it was clean and airy if you weren't right in the middle of a big city. Everything smelled like grass, straw, soil. Food cooking out on the grill, little restaurants with french fries and milkshakes smells coming out of them along the the roadways.
We played outside, road motorcycles and mini bikes, played frisbee, got our clothes dirty. Gritty & sweet. Free. Took roadtrips a lot, with the windows or the car top down.
This song always makes me feel that again. Reminds me especially of living in Georgia when I was a kid, early to mid 70s. This sounds like that and actually makes me think of the smells and the textures of being outside when Nature was huge around us, and humans were just small within it.
Like the Three Dog Night song Going Back Out The Country (?), got to get away, written by an old blues man I guess from New Orleans.

Electric slide guitar. Gregg says her name came to him when he was at a convenience store at the checkout when he heard an older lady calling for a kid named Melissa. It's random. Gypsy are a nomadic ethnic group from Eastern known as the Romani.

Gypsies were originally an ethnic group who lived a nomadic life. There are still gypsies today, although the term is used now to describe a person's tendency not to put down roots. On a side note, a self-proclaimed "King of the Gypsies" is buried in my hometown. He has quite the elaborate gravesite.

Here's a little fun fact for you. Allman Brothers singer/keyboardist, Greg Allman, was married to Cher from 1975-1978. And, singer/guitarist, Elijah Blue, is there son. If you search RUclips you can find a couple duets Greg & Cher performed together on the Cher Show

    Duane Allman (d. 1971) was a founder and co- guitarist with Richard (Dickie) Betts, Berry Oakley (d.1972) ,Bass guitar;
And the 2 drummers Jaimoe Johanson and Butch Trucks. Duane coaxed Gregg Allman away from entering dental school to play keyboards and be their singer...is the short version.

Gypsies is a culture typically based out of Romania. Gypsy has also been used as a slur against Romani. They were among the groups persecuted by the Nazis. But you are correct in that they are known for being nomadic. That is the point if it being used in this song.

Britt, First of all those photos of the women are stock photos. Duane Allman's guitar is the prominant instrument in the song. The recording came out after Duane's tragic Fatal motorcycle accident. The story behind the song is that Gregg Allman wrote the song, but could not find the name he could use in the song to give it it's catch. He was in a market and heard a Hispanic mother call her little girl. The little girls name was Melissa and Gregg knew immediately that was the name he needed to us in the song.

Gregg is the Gypsy - always on the road, traveling.
Home is wherever Melissa is. In some accounts of the song’s meaning Melissa is a metaphor for Gregg’s guitar - home is where the music is, even if that’s the road.
Crossroads is both literal in regards to traveling and a reference to the black, southern guitar player, Robert Johnson who, according to legend, met the devil at the crossroads and traded his soul for guitar playing skills.
(Robert Johnson is a wonderful musician and fascinating figure in his own right, his musical prowess has less to do with the devil and more to do with being depressed after he became a widower young. So he was reclusive for a few years while grieving and did nothing but practice guitar and when he came around again his talent seemed to have come from nowhere which is how some of the mythology built up around him)
So crossroads takes on the meaning of the temptations of musical success/fame/life on the road and other personal demons - and he’s wondering if he’ll ever truly be free of them.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident at a crossroads near the Farm (where they lived). About a year later, Berry Oakley slid under a truck on his motorcycle about 1 block away from where Duane died. He came home and then suddenly collapsed and died.
    So crossroads.

It's a peach. Oh yes, absolutely, men can be and are gypsies. No, the gypsy is Duanne Allman, Greg Allman's brother, who died just before this album was made, which was done as a tribute to him. He died in a traffic accident at a crossroad. Melissa is the name given to the woman he always loved from back home.

That instrument "sticking out for you that is leading the charge" is such a nice description. It is an electric guitar but the strings are fretted with a "slide" rather than the finger tips on the left fretting hand. A slide is a tube of metal or glass that is slipped over one of the left fingers and run over the strings while picking at the strings with the right hand.
BTW, the importance of this song is not who or what Melissa is; but the music. Focusing on Melissa is not relevant. The music is what is important. His voice, the guitars, the bass, the two drummers and the organ. Reacting to the music is where its at. Sorry I'm being a d**k. It just seems so trite to care about the pictures and in this particular case, who Melissa is.
BTW, the dude with the lamb chops died very young after their first 3 albums. The bass player died the next year.
    The band is immortal.
