    I’m a nurse supervisor at a nursing home. We get almost no training in caring for those with dementia. We really should be experts in dementia-that should be something we offer to the community. Watching these videos are immensely helpful.

    I am a care giver; I really like Teepa's advice not to ask them "Do you remember? but instead say, I was thinking..." and also never ask them "Do you want to go to the bathroom or...? because they will always answer with a NO. Its better to give them an opportunity to make a choice rather than asking or telling them what to do. I've learned a lot from these videos. Thanks

    Feel very much for the Robin situation. Here, I was forced to abandon my mother against my will and wishes due to my cancer and after cancer treatment long term side effects plus alpha and broken promises of help to come back. My mother had calls from me every day via wifi calls several times a a day for six months plus when she landed in long term care due to car accident and broken hip, and heart attack. When I was able to go h9me and offers of help to be driven u0 by my uncle, my step mother intervened and blocked help from my father. I’m broke but would have been able to give love to my mother. It’s an anguish not to be there.

    Yes, pushing, not pulling! Thanks, as Mom hikes her pants up when I ask her to pull her pants down at the commode. And, then she has two other problems. She is very, very mobile and gets herself to the commode, but sits only half way on it. Handrails helped tremendously to correct her from sitting on the commode sideways, but now she won’t sit back over the opening. So, we end up mopping the floor and often changing her shoes and pants too as she insists on pushing them all the way to the floor. And then problem two -she picks the fluff out of the pull up because it is too bulky. She “just wants underwear.” Yet, many times she uses the pull up, so it is very helpful at least once a day. We’ve been through many brands, and that doesn’t seem to matter. Her logic defies logic! Her nursing home can’t keep up with mopping the bathroom floor after she pees on it, so her room smells like a zoo. Often times, after she independently uses the commode, she tears off the pull up and goes commando, no under clothes. Then, accidents are no longer in the bathroom! Oops.
    How do I insist on a timing schedule for Mom-after meals is definitely when she needs to go? Do I ask for this in her care plan?

    My wife was diagnosed with Parkinsons dementia back in april of this year. She has had PD since late 2016. I've noticed her sitting on usually the right side of her chair/ stool. She also puts peanut butter and preserves on her english muffin more on the left side than the right. it usually falls off in her hand. This I have only recently noticed in the past month or so. I never comment on it other than provide a paper towel or wash cloth before she gets up. I assume this is common among people with her illness.

    What is the appropriate staffing ratio in a memory care facility?

    • @teepasnowvideos
      @teepasnowvideos  2 года назад

      Hey @xiixiixo, it's Dan from Teepa's team. I'm sorry for the delay in responding to you. I just started looking through the comments and then wanted to talk to Teepa :) Unfortunately, there isn't a simple answer. The honest answer is that it needs to be more than what most of the guidelines currently state. So many of them are counting people that aren't actually providing engagement and care. Things that need to be taken into account are the types of dementia, the personality traits of both the residents and staff, support and engagement training, and more. Unfortunately, most of what is taken into account is the bottom line.
      As with anything, the better trained and more motivated the staff, the role becomes easier. When you partner in care and provide a functional, familiar, friendly, and forgiving environment for everyone, it becomes easier. The focus needs to be on the residents and their needs, likes, and wants instead of seeing them as tasks to check off on a list.
      Sorry, I know this response is long, but I didn't say it wasn't an easy answer :) If you'd like to talk to Teepa about this, she does offer private consultations for both families and organizations. You can check it out here: teepasnow.com/product/private-virtual-consultation-with-teepa/

    Teepa, what makes you think , that even if she tells her mom all the things... will her mom understand... Moderate dementia means that she is less likely to understand ... doesn't it? Its ok to have all these suggestions, but we are taking about a person with dementia...

    • @teepasnowvideos
      @teepasnowvideos  Год назад

      Hi, @Pamela Riley, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We here at Positive Approach feel that even though it might not be that a person understands less, but maybe that we need to let them process things (meaning slow down our communication) in their time. As a member of Teepa's team (this is Shelly responding), I think many of us make assumptions that we may want to rethink when interacting with someone living with dementia. If you want to discuss more, please reach out to us 1-877-877-1671 or consult@teepasnow.com

    So one CNA for every 40 patient/resident is what you call trained staff? And even less RN/LPN for every resident? ALFs the very best on a great day when staffing is like Mayberry and all is perfect is one caregiver that’s not even a CNA just a somebody off the street that they are paying less money per hour than McDonalds workers and Walmart workers are making? Plus these people have t care for not only the residents but cook all 3 meals and do all the cleaning, and laundry!!!, don’t feed the public bullshit! I wonder if Teepas brain is failing?
