Surfing in Australia, South America, South Africa or off the California coastline is literally the aquatic equivalent of playing Russian roulette. You can spin the cylinder many times and walk away lucky, but it only takes that one time….and quite frankly the terror of being eaten alive outweighs any rush that a recreational activity can provide, IMHO.
Skydiving is dangerous, but I have never heard of a giant bird plucking a skydiver out of the air. Downhill skiing is risky, but rare is the polar bear that grabs a passing skier for lunch. Surfing and scuba diving, however…..just tempting fate. And if you knock at the devil’s door often enough, sooner or later he is gonna answer.

Surfers know the risk when they paddle out into the sharks domain, it's a silly risk they choose to take. The ocean is their domain, not ours!
I live in South Australia, and often see surfers sitting out there on their boards bobbing around like live bait for a passing shark. It's crazy how many times the shark spotter plane sounds the alarm, and the surfers ignore it and stay out there.
