For those befuddled by the price mentioned “50,000 rupiah or around 30 us dollar”, please kindly note as mentioned in description, it was extracted from documentary “overseas legends - the shark fin” which was made around year 1996 (before asian financial crisis). At that time FX rate is around Rp 1,800/USD. So, considering the time lapse, financial crisis, inflation, etc at the time, that amount is not as low as we thought now (still u fair price for the fishermen though).
Rp 50,000 in 1996 = Rp 387,841 in 2021 at Indonesia, so still pretty cheap. Well, mostly traditional fisherman doesnt know where to sell to get better price.

To those confused why they only get $30 for such a struggle: They sell the body MINUS the fins for $30. Shark's meat is very stinky, smells like ammonia. The price is so cheap because for most people, the meat is only palatable salted (preserved salted fish). The fins make the most of their catch, the body is only their "bonus". I'm an Indonesian and $30 is not much even at the year this documentary filmed.
You sound like someone who has no experience with sharks. Shark meat is some of the whitest, mildest tasting meat in the ocean. Atlantic sharpnose meat beats cod any day of the week.
@@corneliusbartholemew6725 Maybe the sharks we're talking about are just different, or maybe it's just different taste preferences. You can come here and try to popularize shark meat. It is said that this documenter was made in 1996. USD 30 at that time was equal to 50K Indonesian Rupiah. Thats alot of money they earned in 1 just 1 day. @Julian I work at a fish market and I'm a avid fisherman. Most modern boats have a system that super cools saltwater and circules it in a tank. The max holding time for fish in it is 7-10days. That is with flushing the saltwater every other day. Not sure if these guys even had ice. Maybe my definition of edible is different than yours. The shark at the end didn't look it had been salt cured. Wish I could have asked the guys directly. Whatever they are doing has worked for them a long time.
Its really disappointing. I would pay $30 just for a tooth of that Shark to make a bracelett out of it. They sell the whole animal for that... What a world.

@@dr.tittyflickr1966 actually the longer it is alive, the worst the meat will be. When the shark is stressing out it starts releasing all sorts of things into it's body. Best thing to do is kill it quickly and bleed it. Then pack it on ice.

Sharks, tiger sharks especially, are just as stupid as typical fish, and typical fish get chopped up while they are still awake by fisherman all over the world. Tiger sharks are so stupid they will eat garbage and have been found with boots and toilet seats in their stomachs. And they eat their own babies. “Oh but its such a beautiful animal” -STFU. The only thing special about tigersharks bull sharks and white sharks is that they are violent as fuck, and if that is to be admired we should all admire ted bundy as well.
They wanna keep it alive for as long as possible, the meat rottens fast in that climate. It's hard to see but it's even harder to see all that meat rotten and not eaten.
That's huge tiger shark, the amount of times and patience, the resources and equipment it requires, is impressive and look at the size of the boat it is so small to catch those big sharks, they have to catch a big shark like that without machine to help them, the boat is not so big compared to how huge the tiger shark is, compare to fishing boats in other countries. It's going to be a huge boost for them if they can have one of those big boat.
i saw them take the fins and the head on board not sure what they did with the rest, plus to be honest i would be very wary of eating such a big fish esp a shark.
Well done… fascinating subject and makes one realize how blessed we are in a very different way of life. I was a commercial diver for many years and took jobs all over the world. I have undergraduate degrees in biology, zoology and graduate degrees in marine biology and engineering. I am not a young man any more and so my memories of people like this making a living in the seas are first hand and indelibly inscribed in my mind. I worked in many sharks’ situations…. dozens actually in the Caribbean, Central and South America and both coasts of Africa. I have killed quite a few big dangerous sharks that threatened my teams and witnessed first hand what happens in attacks and several fatalities. You don’t forget that either. For the sake of accuracy I will point out that of the three “ unholy trio” of requiem sharks responsible for the growing number of attacks and deaths annually… great white, tiger and bull… it is the bull shark that is responsible for the vast majority of attack episodes …. for decades. Basically they are the most aggressive, will eat anything, do not test bump’ first and are flu f in great numbers all over the world…. including fresh water rivers 100 miles or more from the ocean. Thanks for this video.
I could swear on a stack of Bibles, as a biologist you're the nastiest piece of work I ever met, You give biologists a bad name, man. You were doin'alright when you said you were a commercial diver, than you screwed it all up with your supposed degrees. You know, there's something about professionals that a layabout could never sham: the language of knowledge. Hate to break it to you, You ain't got it, not in the slightest. A) you say You worked in several shark situations and witnessed several fatalities, especially in the Caribbean. You see, I took a look at all the shark attacks on record in the areas where you said you sailed (basically all over the world, you're more tramp than the Lady,😅), and it doesn't add up. Since 1580 (440 years ago) we have on record, in the Caribbean Islands, 33 shark attacks at the Bahamas (that's one attack every 13 years), 13 attacks at Cuba (one in 33 years), 4 in Haiti and 3 in Jamaica. That's it, since 1580. All over the Caribbean Islands. You were also in south America, good for you, people die in packs from shark attacks there, don't they? Since 1931, in Brazil 1.2 attacks/year, Ecuador 0.13, Argentina and Venezuela 0.04, Uruguay and Colombia had both a single attack in the whole period. Full stop. Hardly a carnage, I'd say. No need to mention my sources, a biologist like You knows them too well...but how come You never had a glance thru them, prof.?? I wonder where You witnessed all those shark situations, loads of fatalities...at the theaters maybe? J. Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean, could it be the deal? B)many sharks threatened your crew? A biologist would never allow untrained personnel to dive near sharks (at least those from 7ft. on), and trained personnel would know how to minimize the risks, there's biologist doin' that on a daily basis, did You know that? C)You Say number of attacks îs on the rise globally. Wrong, they're going down , due to shark overfishing and better security measures implemented in many coastal areas. D)Bull sharks are responsible for the vast majority of attacks. WRONG again, You don't know the abc of it, dude. Here's our results, attacks by species: 1)Carcharodon carcharias 2)Galeocerdo cuvier 3)Carcharhinus leucas 4)Carcharhinus spp. You're familiar to scientific names, aren't You, prof.? E) In your fictional "unholy trio of requiem sharks", only the Bull can be included, Great Whites and Tiger belong to other families, genius. I'd say, You were a fisherman who fished sardines by day and dreamed of sharks by night, and I'll stick to that. You could have made an excellent clown, too, in my opinion. Many people talented like you 'round here, doc.?
I respect your profession. i can not figure out a single shark attack where the shark is to blame thoe. is is their domain, and when ever you decide to venture out on the ocean, or rivers they hunt in your the wiser. i do not know much of the trade, but i would imagine that professional divers now a days have every single tool available to operate in complete safety if they chose to. or rather invest into. As a mechanical engineer myself designing offshore equipment, i can off my head get 10-20 ideas to design diver safe cages that can fit to every purpose. like provide cover doing inspections or fitting/connecting subsea cables or other stuff.

1 USD in 1996 is equal to 1.74 USD in 2021
so 30 USD in 1996 is equal to 52 USD today.
still underpriced I think.
Rp 50,000 in 1996 = Rp 387,841 in 2021 at Indonesia, so still pretty cheap. Well, mostly traditional fisherman doesnt know where to sell to get better price.

To those confused why they only get $30 for such a struggle:
They sell the body MINUS the fins for $30.
Thanks for the info ,i was confused
You sound like someone who has no experience with sharks. Shark meat is some of the whitest, mildest tasting meat in the ocean. Atlantic sharpnose meat beats cod any day of the week.
@@corneliusbartholemew6725 Maybe the sharks we're talking about are just different, or maybe it's just different taste preferences. You can come here and try to popularize shark meat. I told facts, nothing more. The same goes for terasi (blacan), fermented fish paste (and whatever else included in the making). It's very popular here but disgusting to most westerners.
It is said that this documenter was made in 1996. USD 30 at that time was equal to 50K Indonesian Rupiah. Thats alot of money they earned in 1 just 1 day. For comparison, Indonesian goverment civil servant higest monthly salary at that time was 120K Indonesian Rupiah.
Here's our results, attacks by species:
1)Carcharodon carcharias
2)Galeocerdo cuvier
3)Carcharhinus leucas
4)Carcharhinus spp.
