Beautiful watch. I like the improvements here. The only thing I don't care for is the movement. Seiko has an amazing 6L and 8L movements. I have owned an 8L, the monoblock marine master, and it was a gem, one of my favorite watches I took everywhere with me and kept excellent time. Previously, I had a 6R15 and was much less impressed with the performance there--back then that was for 800 dollars, the so-called Pepsi bezel on the mm200 back in 2018. I'm reluctant to try a 6R again, this time at 1300.

I think Seiko has started to realize and fear that Citizen will take over the hearts of JDM watch fans 😂😂😂

These look terrible. They ruined the pyramid with the 3 lines of text on the previous model. The first version without the lume plot at 3 was the best, this one looks even worse than the revision to meet ISO standards. Seiko has a great design language with the 62mas, 6159, 6105, and 6309 which all had date or day/date windows at 3 o'clock. These watches are just weird looking with that date placement and look un-Seiko like. Good review and video though.

I think the blue is great too, but I already have blue in my collection. How flashy would you say the sunburst and gilt is in the metal? Thank you for the great and informative video.
Great video Tom. Bracelet seems like a dealbreaker. Why Seiko continues to make great watches with average bracelets makes me scratch my head. Also the accuracy isn’t great either even though the movement has been upgraded. I feel like a nice Seventy30 B&J NATO would look great.
@@trishhunt3137it's not, my man. I tried this watch early at AD at my place. They upgraded their bracelet. It feels more comfortable than the old version.
I love the design of this watch. It’s a classic. The one thing that I don’t understand is why a 1400 Euro watch still uses a movement that operates at 21,600 beats. There are so many other brands that offer a movement operating at 28,800 beats for a far lower price. I understand that you can increase the power reserve by decreasing the beats per hour but it just doesn’t feel right. Sometimes I feel that these “prospex” watches aren’t really that pro. Other micro brands offer similar value at almost half the cost.
How is the fitment of the end links? That was a complaint I had with the 143; bracelet was okay, but for a $1k watch the end links should at least fit properly into the case!
I wasn’t a fan the time I tried on the original, probably due to the grey hues. I think this version looks great on video and I’ve loved the porthole date since I saw it on the bell&ross. I will no longer consider a watch without a date but the issue I may have with this is my ability to read it with my aging eyes.
My 143 has dominated my collection. I love that watch. I also have the 455 preordered. Thanks for the video. Im super hyped to get that watch on my wrist come June.
@@BowlOfSalmon was lucky enough to have an AD discount it for me to around $1150 since I was on the fence. I realized after going through an AD, that the retail price really is just a suggestion. . . .
I'm definitely on the blue dial train!! It's a shame that Seiko still used old pin and collar bracelets w/old clasps (no onthefly macro adj) on these $1500 divers. Several micro brands put Seiko to shame in that area. Still, I do like these and may have to pick up that blue dial just to see how I like it.
@@BowlOfSalmon maybe it's just older tech. I've had issues w/old Omega pin/collar bracelets when resizing, even using proper tools. It's just easier w/screws. You're not totally wrong though. My biggest 'issue' is the old lack of an on-the-fly macro adjust clasp given the huge price increase in Seiko's over the past 3-5 years.
Garbage movement. Terrible bracelet and clasp. Diashield ruins the natural shiny appearance of 316L. Porthole date in the most detested location. Awful power reserve text on the dial. No. Just no 👎🗑️
@@BowlOfSalmon Doxa 39, or Certina DS action diver 38. I’d either drill more micros in the Certina clasp, or swap it. When the movement fails, replace the powermatic 80 with a fully serviceable top grade ETA 2824 or SW200. Personally, I don’t think there’s a lot of great divers in this price range. I’ve been in this hobby too long, so I tend to nitpick on things noobs overlook.
@@tomw4962 answer: Seiko’s horrid QC and crap movements hurt me. Out of five Seiko watches I have received, only one had no QC issues. And this is a cheap quartz.
I really like the monochrome Black dial version, but that new shorter clasp with only 2 micro adjustments is a deal breaker, to getting a good fit. I’ll stick with my SPB149.
Cool to see a hands-on, since the announcement. I prefer the symmetry of a no date, but I realize that I check my watch daily for the day of the month. Best of both worlds. If I got a exclusively no-date, I feel like I'd eventually regret if given the option.
Great new models. Seiko just needs to upgrade their bracelets. Lose the divers extension and use a Glyde lock microadjust. Also get rid of the pins and collars and go to screws.
Great price! They look like tudor quality wise…have a great in-house movement and are below the 1500 mark…this is incredible and seikos last a lifetime
Fantastic review. As an owner of the SPB143, this new iteration is exactly what I wanted. I have two gripes with my SPB143. First, there's the long clasp and the wonky and fairly useless dive extension. I wish they got rid of it completely, but at least the clasp is shorter. Also, the fact that the case is ever so slightly smaller is welcome. Finally, I don't like the grey sunburst dial on the SPB143. I know it looks great in some shots, but in direct sunlight seems washed out and the legibility isn't great. Having owned black and blue dial divers, I can tell you that for me black is the way to go. I always end up wearing a black dial watch more since it's so versatile and I love the monochrome, understated look. So I will be upgrading to the SPB451 and probably sell my SPB143. I think that one is the perfect daily + travel watch and you are right about the diashield coating. My SPB143 looks absolutely flawless after 3 years of daily wear and I never tried to baby this watch. It's actually the reason why I'll still go with a Seiko instead of other brand even though there are things I don't like about Seiko (QC issues, movement accuracy and of course the price bump).
The blue one looks good, but I still think my 143 oldest version, without the lume plot at 3 o clock is the best one ☺️ I really enjoy your videos btw ✌🏼
So lets see - Prospex but no 8L35 movement? FAIL. 60 click bezel instead of 120? NOPE. Steel instead of ceramic bezel insert? HELL NO. And that date window is an abomination - place it at 3, 5 or 6 (Seiko has done all three in the past) or dont place it there at all! (All these comments are based as an owner of the 140th Edition MarineMaster which gets all of the above right, but could do with a little less bulk at 220g)
I would get this. But the price hikes keep going. And they still don’t offer a nice on the fly adjustment clasp. At least when they hold prices they should also make better watches with tighter accuracy tolerances (as else it’s still just a 6R as found in watches a fourth of the price years back) and better clasps on their bracelets in my opinion.
Why not just leave the date window at 3 o clock, or ditch the silly "Automatic 3 Days" text, move the "Diver's 300m" up, and put a proper date window at 6 o clock for symmetry? Anyway, not a dealbreaker, in my opinion, might get one at some point.
that round hole 4:30 date is the cheapest looking solution to a date problem they could have ever thought of, ffs Seiko. I’m glad I have a spb239 and I’m holding onto it for dear life as long as I don’t find a cheap sla043.
I don't know why Seiko didn't go with a sunray dial on the black one but I still love the monochrome look of it. I think I'd go with that one since I already have a ton of blue watches and the anniversary edition is a bit too blingy for me. I would've liked it better if they had stayed with the same look as the SPB239.
The blue one is absolutely the pick of the bunch!

I actually have one of those ;) I like it. Just don’t like the connecting lug too much
why none of your images have second hand movement?
These are demo watches provided by seiko and didn’t have live movements
How is the fitment of the end links? That was a complaint I had with the 143; bracelet was okay, but for a $1k watch the end links should at least fit properly into the case!
Slightly better. Different design how they fit in to the case. Less wiggle. But still showing some gap imho
I wasn’t a fan the time I tried on the original, probably due to the grey hues. I think this version looks great on video and I’ve loved the porthole date since I saw it on the bell&ross. I will no longer consider a watch without a date but the issue I may have with this is my ability to read it with my aging eyes.
We can always ask Siri for the date right !? 😉
The 143 is already a very small watch for a diver. The last thing I want is something even smaller.
I just got in the SeaQ date for review ;)
My 143 has dominated my collection. I love that watch. I also have the 455 preordered. Thanks for the video. Im super hyped to get that watch on my wrist come June.
Awesome. Congrats ! I might pick one up. We will see
@@BowlOfSalmon was lucky enough to have an AD discount it for me to around $1150 since I was on the fence. I realized after going through an AD, that the retail
price really is just a suggestion. . . .
I want the blue on a brown leather nato. I hate the 3 days text.
Tip. Don’t read the text ;)
I just ordered the black one it will be here tomorrow I am very excited as this is my second watch after the prx.
You will love it. Congrats. Great duo like that too
The date window seems a bit delicate and at odds with the rest of the watch. No date would have been better in my opinion.
I’d love to see that one too
The problem remains It’s still a boring watch with cheap 25$ movement with weird date they could of just removed it all together
only a problem if you make it a problem
Im ok with the date. New iso standard - new design. Its looking good, very simple.
🤛
I'm definitely on the blue dial train!! It's a shame that Seiko still used old pin and collar bracelets w/old clasps (no onthefly macro adj) on these $1500 divers. Several micro brands put Seiko to shame in that area. Still, I do like these and may have to pick up that blue dial just to see how I like it.
I wonder why we dislike pin and collar that much tho. We only need to do the size bracelet thing once no ? And usually the ad would do it
@@BowlOfSalmon maybe it's just older tech.
No. Just no 👎🗑️
You are very outspoken pro
Or con. Curious. What would you go for if you want this look in this price point ?
@@BowlOfSalmon Doxa 39, or Certina DS action diver 38. I’d either drill more micros in the Certina clasp, or swap it. When the movement fails, replace the powermatic 80 with a fully serviceable top grade ETA 2824 or SW200. Personally, I don’t think there’s a lot of great divers in this price range. I’ve been in this hobby too long, so I tend to nitpick on things noobs overlook.
Who hurt you?
@@tomw4962 answer: Seiko’s horrid QC and crap movements hurt me. Out of five Seiko watches I have received, only one had no QC issues. And this is a cheap quartz.
I really like the monochrome Black dial version, but that new shorter clasp with only 2 micro adjustments is a deal breaker, to getting a good fit. I’ll stick with my SPB149.
Ah. These watches shine on so
Many straps. An on the fly adjust would have been nice …
@@BowlOfSalmon I agree, at this pricing point having a push button adjustable clasp is a must. Seiko clasp on these new SPB’s needs an update.
Does the special edition have the blue lume?
I stupidly didnt check. Sorry
"3 DAYS" sucks
Unless it’s a long weekend
@@BowlOfSalmon😄
is new version's bezel aluminum ?
It does. But I think it’s been treated with a coating
The blue reminds me of the blue Pelagos. Similar dial, markers ext...
Cool to see a hands-on, since the announcement. I prefer the symmetry of a no date, but I realize that I check my watch daily for the day of the month. Best of both worlds. If I got a exclusively no-date, I feel like I'd eventually regret if given the option.
Everytime I don’t wear a date watch I’ll try and check it 🤪
Great new models. Seiko just needs to upgrade their bracelets. Lose the divers extension and use a Glyde lock microadjust. Also get rid of the pins and collars and go to screws.
Upgrades are due indeed
I wish such a watch with, haha, quartz movement and thinner xD
the tag aquaracer solar comes to mind
@@BowlOfSalmon uh, expensive...
Great price! They look like tudor quality wise…have a great in-house movement and are below the 1500 mark…this is incredible and seikos last a lifetime
they could last a lifetime ;) (if we stop looking at other watches too)
Fantastic review.
It's actually the reason why I'll still go with a Seiko instead of other brand even though there are things I don't like about Seiko (QC issues, movement accuracy and of course the price bump).
sounds like you will love the new one. and I agree with you, despite all the gripes you mentioned. its a killer watch. thanks for watching !
The blue one looks good, but I still think my 143 oldest version, without the lume plot at 3 o clock is the best one ☺️
I really enjoy your videos btw ✌🏼
appreciate you dropping in for a friendly note too ;)
Blue or black for me.
Next one then
I would get this.
I agree some things can be done to step up the game ...
Why not just leave the date window at 3 o clock, or ditch the silly "Automatic 3 Days" text, move the "Diver's 300m" up, and put a proper date window at 6 o clock for symmetry?
Anyway, not a dealbreaker, in my opinion, might get one at some point.
I agree with the Why not tho
that round hole 4:30 date is the cheapest looking solution to a date problem they could have ever thought of, ffs Seiko. I’m glad I have a spb239 and I’m holding onto it for dear life as long as I don’t find a cheap sla043.
Seeing more brands approach it like this lately. It hides well enough in plain sight
Im sure more versions will follow
