    What a GREAT series man . If you don't mind, let me share my "beginning drummer" path. This may sound funny but THAT was the passion we had. I was born in Cuba, which means that ALL fundamental drumming tools are limited to people who were already professionals or had passed a gruesome 3 day test of "musicality", "ear", natural melodic and tempo "gifts" and of course were part of the Communist Youth.
    So my FIRST "kit" were rubber cut outs of old car tires. No bounce, no resonance just a 'TAP' . By using different pieces of tires thickness , I could get 3 or 4 sounds. I nailed the rubber to pieces of wood sitting on homemade wood stands. Sticks were hand made but it was impossible to get a straight and standardize the thickness and weight SO......
    I learned to make drumsticks from "RIB-BAR". whatever you found. Sometimes we had to walk miles to a construction site and BEG for two pieces of rib-bar . If you knew someone with tools (or through $2.00 US dollars) you could get them to shape the rib-bar to a manageable and drumstick shaped chunk of metal. Behind hospitals (again, a damn walk of a full day) we'd get used gauze and used medical tape and puto around the top of the "CABILLAS" ( spanish for Rib Bar). a Bass Drum was just a CAJON ( which suddenly I see everywhere but this was a REAL wooden box. BTW - The way people who do not speak Spanish pronounce CAJON as COJON - a COJON in spanish is slang for testicle so it is funny hearing someone is playing a TESTICLE. Our "sets" grew as someone invented a way to make cymbals with a flat piece of thick tin full of holes and nails through the hole so you'd get some sustain.
    THAT was my learning kit. Rudiments were pretty much whatever the hell you thought you needed and then it would be passed amongst a group of would be drummers. After two year. I started at 14 so at 16 I took the "exam" and the percussion part (where you actually hit a practice pad with a drumstick) all of us would fly through. Melody was a bitch and ear was something like a teacher would hit a piano chord and ask to hum the notes you heard or a short classical music you had to hum after one listen. We all cinched the test BUT some of us were NOT communists so we would not be admitted in the conservatory. Eventually , little groups began to appear and the REAL drums would be lent to each other as family would bring a pedal or cymbal from the USA. When I arrived in the USA , I went directly to High School and asked to join the Music group. I did great but I could not do a roll or ride a Hi-Hat. But man my hands FLEW. After I explain to my HS teacher how I got that speed and I explained it he suggested I wrote a book about the INFINITE desire to BE a drummer. Of course Latin percussion was a cinch . Most latin boys learn TIMBALES before they learn to read and write.
    Hey, thanks for this great series and your instinctive way of teaching .

    Do you use this effects while practising? How do you deal with the latency?

    • @sccdrum93
      @sccdrum93  7 лет назад +2

      Great question, Diego. My interface is actually a little unpredictable...Most of the time I can run those basic effects with no noticeable latency. But there are times when it can suddenly kick in and be an issue. My interface is USB 2.0, which is the problem haha. Need to upgrade to FireWire or Thunderbolt. The latency becomes a more apparent issue when I get really heavy with the effects (part 3 :)).

      Cool, thanks. I'll try to fix that for me because I run some eqs and reverbs and I get a slight latency issue which becomes noticeable with rolls and feels weird.

      A good USB interface with a good pc usually doesn't make problems with latency

    This is great! Thanks for posting this! I have started to experiment with recording my practice kit as well. How are you hooking up your tascam D-1? Looks like you're going from the headphone jack/line out. I have the tascam DR-05 and would like to do the same. Are you leaving the unit turned off? Thanks again.

    I play a lot of double bass and heavy music, do you think this setup would still be ideal? Or do you think there will be just too many vibrations from the kick alone?

    • @sccdrum93
      @sccdrum93  7 лет назад

      Hmmm....good question, Max. If you're not on the 1st floor, you might want to consider building a sound-isolating riser to put the kit on. I'm probably going to build one for my setup here just to further the noise dampening. If I do, there will definitely be a video :) Some guys do the "tennis ball riser" design, but I'm going to try using a high density foam. The idea with either of these is that you eliminate vibrations from traveling through the floor OR the walls.
