    A few weeks ago I posted a video all about my apartment practice kit and why I think it’s the best. Now it’s time for a part 2, where we’ll take a look at the miking and recording side of the setup, as well as the processing that I’m doing in Logic. Today we talk about the tuning of the Remo Silent Strokes, the placement of microphones, and EQ that helps this quiet kit sound huge through the headphones. We finish by A-B-ing the kit WITH and WITHOUT effects so that you can really hear what’s going on. This is a tour of my simple recording set up, from how to get the best sound out of the kit to fine-tuning that sound for optimum monitoring while practicing.

      It’s all about getting the most out of your kit! (Especially when it’s a practice kit) 😉

    Latency used to drive me nuts on my electronic kit. It was a real kit but with "gauze" heads (kinda like panty hose), and pickups that attached to the shell and rested on the heads. All processed through an e-kit brain. Finally sold it to a girl who wanted to learn drums.

    • @sccdrum93
      @sccdrum93  6 лет назад

      That’s frustrating! Were you ever able to get rid of it? Was this a kit you constructed yourself? Sounds pretty cool.

      I traded a full (cheapo) acoustic kit for an "electronic" kit with a "brain" and mixer. The kit was a real Mapex or DW or Pearl (I forget) kit, but the heads were a kind of gauze stuff. The pickups for each piece were clipped to the rim and rested on the heads, and would feed the head hits into the "brain". The brain could simulate a number of voices and kits (jazz, metal, country...). I had a CD player for one channel of the EQ, and the brain signals into another channel of the EQ, all fed into my headphones.
      Anyway, I had been used to playing an acoustic (and unmiked) kit. And when I began to play on the "electronic" kit and noticed the processing lag (even though it was minute) it just drove me nuts.
      I'm not a pro and never played in public (the original kit was a surprise gift from my wife; I'd never played an instrument before in my life), so eventually I sold the whole thing to a teenager who wanted to take up the drums seriously.
      Hope that answers your questions.
      Best,
      Paul

    Hey Stephen, thank You 4 another gr8 Video as always...!
    At the moment I m trying to setup a Basement Practice Kit, as close to an acoustic kit and posibbly silent as it gets :)
    ...
    Can you take a second and review my planned setup below:
    1. Drum Kit either with Silent Strokes (with the Duck Tape in teh middle :) ) or with 2 or 3-Ply Meshheads
    2. Noname Michrophones (in the Future i would invest in Shures or similar)
    3. Audio Interface - i dont have one yet, so ...what would you recommend. As I understood, it has to be a better one in order to prevent latency issues...?!!
    4. As for the Recording Prgram - Audacity or GarageBand to start with?
    ...
    Thans for Your Feedback! Mario

    Sounds acceptable, I'm going to have to do this! So your running Logic on an I pad? Did you ever use Garage Band? 0:12

    I've got an Arbiter kit... entirely Shell-less inc. the snare and kick, it's an acoustic f'sure but to look at it you'd think it would sound thin or tinny... but nope... It sounds like any good quality standard kit (with the traditional shells) that I've ever played or heard... Even the kick delivers a nice deep thump, if that's what you're after, to my ears at least. Zildian cymbals and good quality stands etc.. all packs into a breadbox.. (of course). Everything just works like you'd hope and expect...I've heard others say they can't get the full acoustic sound or haven't heard it themselves..meh.. "beauty is in the ears that hear"... I was surprised to see you attach the mics to the drums directly and not have separate stands for those. No problems with vibration from the kit whilst playing?.. Any hooo... Another fine video.. even after all this time I was amazed at how much I understood and appreciated... thankyou.

      I think I’ve seen those kits you’re talking about...I saw a guy in a park in NYC playing something like that one time. That’s also similar to the Pearl Rhythm Traveller kit (which I have), although the rhythm traveller does have shells. They’re not deep, though, and they don’t have resonant heads.
      I haven’t had any vibration issues with the mics. Most kits I play on in live situations are miked like that as well just so that there are less stands on stage. We’ve used gaff tape before to secure anything loose, so that can help as well. In a studio recording situation most people would probably use stands just to eliminate that possibility. But if it’s live...or if it’s just my practice kit it’s not an issue. :)

    That really helped a lot! Thank you! I have a Laney Ah40 amp and I have tough time trying to eq the toms to sound even with the kick and snare. Do you have any tips? btw I love your channel man, it really is helpful and more than just glamorous fills

    Wow! Lots of good info. But I'm new to all this, (getting back into drums). I find the whole 'processing and what I'm doing in logic' part confusing. Do you have any videos where you cover the basics of that or can you point me to resources where I can learn about it? Thanks, Stephen!

    As I understand it (still pretty new to all this) latency is a function of processing power in the audio interface and computer rather than USB standard. I'm running a Beringer 8 channel interface (drums) into a Focusright 8 channel interface (vocal, keys, guitar and bass) via optical and then to the computer over USB 2.0. Using Reaper for my DAW I can run plenty of effects on the individual channels but I built a server class computer to the specifications recommended by Pro Tools, Reaper and Logic. Raw audio in and processed audio out are the only things handled by USB so FX shouldn't add data/load. Am I missing a piece of the puzzle?

    • @sccdrum93
      @sccdrum93  6 лет назад

      I think you’re right. I do blame a lot on USB 2.0, though it isn’t the source of ALL my problems. That particular interface, though, will sporadically have terrible latency. I’m not actually sure what causes it, and most of the time restarting it solves the problem. I’ve never had the issue with any other interface (especially if it’s a FireWire or optical interface). This particular instance of latency has nothing to do with effects, so I’m inclined to believe the slowness of the connection contributes. But yes, you’re right that my computer is the bottleneck when it comes to loading in heavy effects. I should have more explicitly stated that in the video. I think ideally I’d run an iMac or something with a much more powerful processor than my little 13” 2011 MacPro. :) I’ve got my RAM maxed out, and I’ve used an SSD for years, but the overall speed and processing still doesn’t quite get to where I’d like it.

    I'm waiting on a set of these
    m.thomann.de/gb/millenium_still_series_cymbal_set.htm?ref=msg_a_0
    Quite a bit cheaper than L80s and comes with two crashes. Mesh heads on the rest of the kits, and I'll be using internal triggers in them. It'll be used 50/50 as a practice kit vs hybrid electronic kit.

      @sccdrum93  6 лет назад

      Cool! I’ve been seeing a few competing options becoming available in the realm of quiet cymbals. It will be interesting to see where that technology goes in the coming years. It’s great that Zildjian has some competition. Let me know how the triggering works out! I’ve always tossed around that idea with mine, but I just haven’t been interested enough to make it happen ;)
