I started at age 47 8 years ago.
Was looking at aludvlwig set for years where I was a church organist and decided to try as the church music thing was on its way out.I never looked back but I did have the co-ordination of the feet and hands.
I can play most of the led zeppilin not perfect but very close .In someway I do regret it as I underestimated the physicality of the instrument but I will never stop

I turn 60 in a week. Started 2 years ago, with a disability. Due to an accident i have no feelings in my thumb and first two fingers. Couldn't hold a stick. Neuropathy in my feet and hands. Cant feel my feet in the pedals. Several other medical issues. Doesn't matter! I love playing. Its become an obsession (just drums in general). I have hit many walls that i cant seem to push through, and several surgeries that have lost me months of practice. So I am still a terrible drummer. But i still love to play. And i can make it through slower money beat songs enough at this point. Probably not well, but not enough that people who aren't drummers would notice much. I only play in my shed (finished and has AC and Heat). I play alone, and thats all I need. But i would like to get to the point i could gif once in a while. I just had 1 of 3 upcoming vein ablations in my legs. The lack of circulation i have causes me real stamina issues. If it works that will help a lot. Thanks for the encouragement. I see several others who are older than me who also commented. Best of luck to you all! 🎉🥁🥁🥁❤️

I started about 20 plus years ago, and encourage anyone to learn playing drums. I just started learning bass guitar a few months in and love it. When I asked my father if I could have a drum set, he was very happy and even paid for lessons. My father isn't a musician but has always loved music to this day

@@AttunedMusician I really need to play more often. My work hours are not so great , I feel tired to pick up the bass, I tend to play about 30 mins to an hour on my days off, but I do feel like I should be playing at least 20-30 minutes a day. On my days off I play a lot of drums still, about 4 hours a day, then pick up my bass. I tell myself every week "I really have to play my bass more".

  • @drummingriffin

I first picked up a pair of sticks at 18 years old. I am now 68. I was self taught and not played constantly in that 50 years. I have arthritis so I only do one jam night per week alternating at two different venues. I make little mistakes now due to my condition and I really feel the pain the next day, but I enjoy it so much that it's worth the pain. I am not the best drummer in the world by a long way, I don't need to be, but the pleasure I get from playing is beyond measure.

As an idiot 13 year old in the UK, I got dragged along to some gig I didn't want to go to. It was some old guy from America, playing jazz. He was apparently 67 years old. What could I possibly learn off some old guy I thought?

Hey man- I am one of those people that has played drums since..I pulled out pots and pans. Literally. I was 2 and by 3 my mom and dad say I was scatting along jazz saxophone solos by Michael Brecker . However, my mom, dad, uncle, half brother, sister in law, are all professional musicians. So…I couldn’t escape it. heh.
I mainly taught myself. it’s also like I always say “yeh- how many parents out there are going to want to buy their kid loud drums? And we lived in a duplex apartment!!! We were very poor too so, got a snare , then maybe 18 months later a hihat, then next Chanukah I got a bass drum and my older mentor gifted a (actually awesome) late60s ziljdian A 22” ride.
So I could type so much about this subject but instead of writing essay here, I always tell people, and students “it’s never too late to learn!!”
And I had to basically relearn how to play 1.5 times, one because I sure could shed and play along and developed 4 way coordination and good time keeping. But my HAND, muscle technique? At age 17 My drum mentor said “dude the amount of gigs you’re playing already if you don’t let me teach you change your technique, you’re gonna have bad carpal tunnel and or serious injuries by 21 and he was right.
Also-what you say about all things being more developed and all and how the mind changes as you get older, something great you pointed out.
*Last point ; total openness, there’s…. A “liiitle” bit of drugs and alcohol in the music industry, right? Idk maybe yall never heard of that 😋
I became a heroin addict for 8 years. Just got 15 months clean. I play for the love of it now, and even though I am blessed and greatful to have 2 gigs this weekend? I turned down a third just because- it wasn’t enough money for the hassle and long drive each way. Etc. so I’ll starve a little and be proud of where I set my boundaries as a musician- and know that even at 30, I AM getting old man!! Lol. So I have a gig at 8am tomorrow? I m not gonna play a gig til 1 am tonight. get to sleep maybe by 3:30am and show up to a church gig for somewhere I’ve just been filling in for, all tired and unprofessional.
And that’s another thing (last I promise):
Most people can be more professional as they get older, they having gone thru different experiences, etc.
So. Starting so young and leaving high school to tour ? I was very unprofessional at times. Now I meditate every day , (don’t shoot heroin! Or anything else) , and , well, listen to those around me more. Which is half of what -playing - actually is, anyway right?
    Thanks for your great video!
    Cheers from Philly!
