The famous TENNIS BALL RISER. Does it actually work? Is it the real secret to playing drums in an apartment? This DIY build is a go-to solution for apartment drummers or anyone needing to soundproof their kit. But it seems like nobody’s really telling us how well these things work. We assume that they’re doing some good and that our money and efforts aren’t going to waste… but who really wants to go to the effort to build one of these if we don’t ABSOLUTELY KNOW that it does work? Today we’ll both find that out. I was curious, so I built one. I also tested it from the floor below so that we can all know whether this endeavor is worth the sweat we have to put into it. Because I live in an apartment, I don’t own a truck, and I don’t have access to power tools, this is also the NO-TOOLS version of how to build a tennis ball riser (with the exception of a drill). So sit back, relax, and enjoy this alternate tennis-ball-riser-building-process, and let’s find out whether these things actually do any good.

id rather have an upstairs neighbor who makes a tiny bit of sound from drums than my current neighbors who get drunk, scream, and sound like theyre recreating wwe every night.

@@DJG44 No but strangely enough I'm a signed artist as well but he copyrighted Isaac Romero first so i just go by JOE ROMERO as an artist Isaac Romero as a person. Yet at first I thought it would be crappy but it's actually awesome and it's very common in the business. It's a separator of who knows you and who thinks they know you but it's a old/new friend thing. But when you get signed as I was told " your gonna lose some friends and family mostly out of monetary and jealousy yet I still can't figure the believability part. I'm Still recording and lots of people even the fruends and family who know I've been playing for 30 years don't get it and this thing you are mentioning with the other Isaac makes it worse. But he's cool I like his songs he has more than a few. We've messaged privately and I'm sure he's happy that I don't go out there and make a race or change the name slightly. If anything we could get slight benefits off this! I'm signed to a slightly higher end record company but I'm seeing that If your material is giid you end up with several company's getting a cut but I'm gonna hold off and release my public face book etc shit out briefly before I release. I have 2 albulms in the can went on another tour with other bands and I got a tour or 7 under the belt but it's nice to see it all happen before you go on your tour! My placement is very meticulous and thought out. He definitely has more freedom but I opted to own my music whole. Gotta take the reels with you. If you sell yourself right away there's nothing left. You can always sell yourself later. His economic situation isn't my business but I think he's got the label but not his music at least that's my impression. We are on different spectrums but I think he does more than guitar where I'm more nine inch nails where I try to play everything on the albulm I can and hire out since my singing sucks where he's a much better singer. I'm not a great singer! I'm a player forsure and I'd love to jam with him and he's also much younger but his shit is giid and I'm all for him kicking much ass and he's got talent forsure. Chances are neither of us make it but we both got the skills. It's up to chance and the people! I know so many great players that just didn't pan out. My company is headed by a huge artist and he's huge for me. Having gone through it he's very protective and cool about things. It's always "take your time it ain't a race we are quality not sales we tour and play! No back tracks and kick ass 120% all day and twice on your bday and Sunday. Rest on the plane and stay clean, drink water, hire a good agent and yo mama better handle yo money cause if she don't kniw how they will steal it!" So I'm happy I already got what I wamted. Yet they say your luck changes the first signing to bad and I've had lots of wired things go on and I've seen some weird shit but I got in the big leagues and im getting time and kicking ass! But I wanna hear my shit! It's hard playing everyone else's now. But that's to he expected! I'm just looking and thinking and learning from the best! But at this point I don't want fame. After seeing what it gets you it's not right! I'm not a money person at all and I don't want nor ever respected or ever wanted power. It's a snake that bites back and I need my freedom. So in the end maybe I should go bucket head on the people? He's actually like that and keeps that bucket on and has good friends where they've all kept his real name out of main media. Bucket can play! he's a player in not as shedding anymore like bucket I'm really playing with all sounds and like I said there's one band I emulate as much as possible with my own tone and that's Trent fucking reznor! Dudes right, tight and right! I'm a great engineer and was a studio player enough to know I can release and not have to worry about rent. Make enough for a nice spot and use my engineering to pay the rent! Sorry I got you with a novel just gabby today. But I'm out and in route. Take care of you and take it easy cause if its easy~TAKE IT TWICE!

I followed this tutorial and built my drum riser and it REALLY makes a difference. I can play all day and my downstairs neighbour thinks I’m just listening to regular music. Totally worth the investment! Thanks Stephen for the video!!!
Unfortunately my neighbor downstairs is 77 yrs old and can hear the thumping despite my carpet...and electronic kit 😔😔. I'm struggling to minimize the thumping from the base kick drum
Dude if you already have a drill you can cut holes large enough for tennis balls you just need a holesaw bit it would literally be PERFECT I cannot believe no one has mentioned this yet

Lol back 6 or 7 years ago I had a drummer for a neighbor who decided to invite his bandmates into his shitty shed in his backyard and try to play Slipknot songs...and they failed. They didn't worry about the noise either these out of tone deaf Mofos was right outside my bedroom window (I was in the house next door) about 100 feet away sometimes as late as 10pm at night pulling that crap.
LOL .... I Swear I had a neighbor once that complained to me for putting new skins on my acoustic kit and tuning them. My wife wanted to hit him with a cast iron skillet.
If you can't control your volume when playing drums, you suck.

i built a tennis ball riser and it works 100%....no complaints from downstairs at all....brilliant, and well worth doing..
I built one of these today following your video with the noodles and all. Mine is 34" x 24" with 1/2" plywood, for an electric drum. The pedals resonated in the floor which my downstairs neighbors most likely heard really well. Pads resonated a bit too, but pedals were the main issue. Quite easy to build, took about an hour. Placed a mic on the floor recorded the kick with and without the platform. With the platform, I got around 6 dB less in the 60Hz and less range, 8 dB less around 140 Hz stomping on the kick. I have seen a riser made using the pool noodles, instead of tennis balls. They had them laying horizontally b/w the pieces of wood and then wrapped the whole thing in foam and added a top layer of carpet. According to them, it actually dampens better than the tennis balls.
The day better insulation is built in all houses, we will have way better drummers.

i love the diy ingenuity of this. Being a musician living in apartments in frustrating and when you don't have a bunch of money you have to get creative! I play guitar and have resorted to placing my amp in a large roadcase I scored used and running a mic threw it. Haven't had an angry neighbor pounding on my door yet.

I'm in an apartment in a high-rise, my strategy for practicing was to get an electronic set and place the thing on a high-density rubber anti-vibration pad, designed for washing machines and appliances. The floor is concrete, there's wall-to-wall carpeting, then the rubber mat, then another rug (just because the mat's kind of ugly). My neighbors below me say they don't hear anything. On the other hand I have to get out at least once a week to a rehearsal studio to play some acoustic drums or else I'll lose my feel for the real thing.

I'm sure someone else has said this by now. Since you used the drill, another option at that point would have been to get a whole saw and make the wholes for the tennis balls.

Realistically I needed this riser idea in like 2008. Might have saved me from having to move even though I was already playing an electronic kit in my apartment.

If I may add, for those thinking of building something like this; it is the holes cut for the tennis balls that gives the stability that is required for playing drums. The holes are a precise size so the wood grabs each ball and locks them into place. It is kinda like making a flat spot on the balls so they won't roll. In Mr Clark's design, the foam donuts are not weight bearing, as they would need to be, considering the total load and motion it will be supporting.
I feel cutting the holes is an intrinsic part of the design and can not be disregarded. The interlocking of smaller boards was a great idea, as long as they don't move or don't touch.
It could be done with large super balls, but they would need to be cut in half and glued. In the end; setting up a drum set on top of 47 balls smashed between two layers of wood sounds sketchy at best. The holes take away the ball's ability to roll, where as the foam donuts don't.
But great job to say the least. And Mr Clark, you sir are an excellent drummer.

Great video, Stephen. BTW, most tennis pro shops have a huge bin where people toss balls that they feel have lost their bounce. These are great for beginners who just want to learn how to hit. You could get some from there for free. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking about doing that (inspired by your video), cutting them and half, and sound proofing a walk-in closet (for voice or sax).
I built mine using 2 pieces of plywood containing tennis balls with the holes drilled thro, with noodles on the floor and kneeling mats (cut into 3's).
This rests on a carpeted floor, in the top room.
Finished it off with rubber foam playmats and a piece of carpet on top. Works for me...

Made two tennis ball isolators for two subwoofers. I did use a hole saw and glued the balls into the holes. They don't "couple" with the floor as well but much less sound bleeding through the floor.

Thank you for this awesome idea. I was able to build one and it really does capture a ton vibrations while playing and so far no complaints from the landlord and neighbors. Costco has a great deal on bulk tennis balls and I was able to get the mdf fairly cheap and cut for free at Home Depot. Bought the hole 1-3/4 hole saw bit and some zips. Also I picked up the jigsaw floor tiles of amazon for a decent price as well. Overall, I think I spent ~ $150 for 8 tennis ball 2x2 panels. Definitely a fun project.

I live in a townhouse and my wife's office is directly under my studio. I built a tennis ball riser wrapped in carpet and placed on 1" foam pads. The bedroom itself also had carpet. She can still hear it of course, but its doesn't sound like the ceiling is going to fall on her. I did this 15 years ago.

Cool video. To reduce cost consider buying a full sheet of material and have the yard/store cut to your spec. Also, use used tennis balls from your local tennis club.

Thanks for posting a video with your findings. Just bought an E-Kit and I'm trying to find a way to keep the floor pedal thumping to a minimum. Thinking of doing your platform method but just for the floor pedal. 👍
Fun video to watch.
The same principles apply to sound proofing a room. They use spacers in the walls and double up the Sheetrock. Most people don't want to go through that trouble or expense but it's worth it.
sooo helpful ! I don't have a complete kit or e drum, but just a snare and bass drum practice pad and wanted to see if there is something I could do to reduce footfall noise (I also think about dampening via towels over both to make the direct sound quieter) since I will move into a apartment with very thin walls and I know my neighbours won't be pleased with excessive drumming... Will try something similar and hope this will reduce it to a bearable level. On a sidenote... that sweater is just too cute on your wife, teehee.... you need to do more collab videos.
