Positives: Alonso seems to be serious about spending another 3 years or more in F1, which is good for the sport. And Piastri probably gets his chance. Downsides: Alonso's history in career choices...
@@mokaPCP Oh yes those highly skilled young drivers like Latifi, Mick, Mazepin and Stroll Jr. If Piastri was a world beater he would have already been loaned out this year. Who are these young drivers that are better than Alonso? None of them.

The way I see it, here are the biggest pluses and minuses: + Aston : Having a driver of Alonso's caliber there will not only provide valuable car development, but if they are smart enough to keep him beyond his racing career, he will help develop the car even further (other examples are Prost at Alpine, Lauda at Mercedes, etc) + Piastri : He is all but assured a drive in F1 next year + (and -) Alonso: He's moving to an inferior car. I'm sure he is getting an obscene amount of money for it. The pro on this is that if he has a 2-3 year deal he may well see the car score a few podiums towards the end, maybe even a win? Schumache was nearly 44 when he got his last podium. - (and a little +) Alpine: They are losing an incredible driver in Alonso. But they are still getting what seems to be a prodigy in Piastri - Ocon: To me Ocon hasn't always seemed like the fastest driver out there. He will be partnered against a rookie next year. The pressure will be to beat Piastri because if he doesn't he may not see a contract extension beyond 2024. - Williams : They were all but set to take Piastri and replace Goatifi. Let's hope they do still find a proper replacement for him. Maybe Nyck de Vries. Nyck really hasn't had much luck in this regard.
Just a few days ago, they made a piece on how Williams was taking a more serious look at Logan Sargeant recently. If anything, this might also be a plus for them.
Neither Prost nor Lauda helped develop the car. Those two man were consultants out of the technical part. Prost isn't btw any more. With all the respect I have for those two gentlemen, they both were mediocre team principals. Prost at Prost GP, Lauda at Jaguar. Other than that, I get your point and agree with 👍 Regarding OCO, it's amazing for how long he managed to remain in F1 being beaten by every single teammate he had so far 🤔 Having Toto as a personal manager clearly has helped despite being average, at least in F1.
Great video. Only thing you’ve missed; Aston Martin more likely to brand a car for Indy 500 allowing Fernando to chase the triple crown which Alpine forbade.
Interesting that Renault/Alpine can't manage to keep their superstars (Ricciardo's and Alonso's moves out of the team are very similar), all the while keeping Ocon for... what reason? Just a bizarre situation all around.
Ocon is pure talent....give him a rb or Ferrari and he will dominate.. Ocon has always been paired with really good drivers, so people dont notice how good he is, because his race positions are never consistent. He was still a bit immature a few years bk, but now hes definitely championship worthy
This is absolutely insane! On the 2021 video game I signed with Aston Martin with Sebastian as my teammate. In my rookie year Vettel retired and Fernando came over to be my new teammate. It's so weird how similar it is.
Yeah, had a similar moment the other day, Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement during the Hungarian weekend in my MyTeam... A day before he did it in real life
@@matthewakers2659 Shit, then expect Leclerc to move to Mercedes, Norris to be the '22 champion, Piastri in Red Bull taking the '23 title and Williams taking the constructors for '23.
Maybe this multi-year contract will be his last before retirement. So let's wish him the best because he gave everything so much with this sports his commitments, legacy, spectacular races his talents etc. Wish you the winning next year's Alonso
Also worth noting the similarities between this and Ricciardo leaving the team in 2020. Two departures that aren’t exactly a vote of confidence in Renault/Alpine
It is pure sentiment on my part, but ever since Renault came back I get the feeling they are 'totally committed to developing a winning car'.....nnjjeeaaah unless Renault management loses interest and cuts funding by 75% in two years.
Schumacher-Seb-Alonso-Lewis-Kimi-Jenson my blood boils when someone tries to make bad comments on them . They are my generation of drivers and only reason why I am still sticking with F1. I started watching F1 in 2004 just when Alonso was catching up with Schumacher. Before criticizing Alonso you guys need to think how driven he is to be performing at such high level and for so long.
Nobody would doubt Alonso's talent as a driver, but he has hasn't made a fruitful contract decision in 20 years. Hence, success at Aston Martin would be a surprise.
You know that there are people here whoom seen Lauda winning at Zandvoort before his accident. And Alonso is not a bad driver. But his mouth is his worden enemy. Telling 13 years now: I Will win Many races and a titel more. Hè is stelling more fried air than a stockbrooker at 5th avenue. The selfproclaimed Best F1 driver in history.
It's not speaking bad about him, it's more of a concern. Alonso still has a title winning drive just not a title winning team. Most new teams, can take atleast 4-5 years to develop into title contenders. Aston will most likely use up both Seb and Alonso for development than rather competing. Who knows how long he stays, and 2026 regs effects, plus not having their own engine, and having an experienced knobhead as a teammate.
I don't blame Alonso for switching. I'm sure he's looking at this from may viewpoints. Personal/financial, job security regardless if at the moment AM is clearly inferior to Alpine, next year and beyond could be a very different story. We do know Lawrence Stroll is very serious about making AM a championship competing and winning team and his capital investment is evidence of that. Lots of capital doesn't guarantee championships though, Toyota and BMW can attest to that but it is necessary to have a chance in hell of competing against the RB's/Ferrari's/and MB's of the world. Let's hope for us longtime fans of Alonso that his gamble pays off this time.
Wasn't that the idea behind bringing on Vettle? Literally their car got worse and worse, season after season. Driver makes no difference if the car is crap.
that's the problem, Alpine is basically the French Ferrari at the moment, which only means their potential title challenge will fall flat on the floor even before it starts
yeah because Renault fought for the title after Alonso left the team in 2007 and 2010 right? and McLaren also went from mid-low table team to championship contenders in 2019, right? No. literally except for McLaren 2008 no team has won the title the very next year after Alonso leaves. what fkn history are u talking about?
@@5iverk I did, and you didn't Alpine (even as Renault or Lotus) have won nothing since 2006, not even a constructors title also, the likes of Cyril, Prost, and now Alonso leaving the team should tell you how Alpine are nothing but hopeless the fact that Otmar has not managed an actual top team before, should also tell you how inferior he is compared to the likes of Horner, Wolff, Todt, Dennis, and Briatore even though what I said tells about Otmar's potential to be a top team principal, it also tells how much he can fail in that position too
Alonso is performing at an ELITE level. So he deserves either 1) a front running team or 2) a truck load of cash. Alpine provides neither. Good for Nando for cashing in on his undeniable talent.
Can’t wait to hear Alonso’s thoughts the first time Lance does something he doesn’t like. Good move for Aston and I hope Sergeant gets the seat at Williams.
Honestly, it's good, it's better for Alonso. Im not sure if it's just my feeling, but ever since this season started, you can clearly see that Alonso is much faster and better than Ocon, however for some reason he was let down by the machinery, but also by his teammate and the team. It seems that something isn't particularly ok in the team, especially since Otmar came.
Alonso much faster than Ocon? He's quicker but only just. Its 8-5 in quali and Ocon is occasionally beating him in the races. Sure, Alonso has had some bad luck but he'd hardly dominating Ocon. AT best he's a tenth faster or pretty much even most times. Ricciardo was beating Ocon by a far bigger margin when they were teammates in 2020.
Pointing at Otmar is baseless unless you are an Alpine Insider spending his days posting on YT.... Here is the bottom line. Renault has been pretending to actually give a shit about winning in F1 since Alonso left for McLaren in 2007... 2 0 0 7! For 15 years they built 2nd-3rd teir motors and or half assed an F1 team.. Seems only Briatore tha weasel could get the Renault package right to mount a proper title challenge and defense.. Nothing since. Renault was a logical step after Honda shit the bed at McLaren so ridiculously.. with any luck The AM deal will allow Alonso to perform where he is capable of soon freekin Stroll seems to not worry too much about investing in the team like no other in years.... The comparison to what Stroll has done to what Renault/ Alpine has done in the same amount of time must be stark.

@@Marko-od7eb Ocon outqualified Alonso but was a little bit slower when Alpine put on hard tires in the race. Overall they were fairly even. Not sure if you can classify finishing a couple of seconds ahead of your teammate as "dominating him".
@Rizvan Myrtaj all of that is true but he is also known for under the table dodgy stuff. Prison twice for fraud and banned from f1 for race fixing. That's just the highlights as well.
It seems clear now that both Dan and Fernando know something about Alpine/Renault that tells us they will never provide a race winning car.. why else would you leave?
They've failed to deliver competitive cars and achieve their goals in 2 different projects (hybrid era & 2022 new rules). the team hasnt even had the internal stability to carry out a winning project, which even Ferrari with a donkey like Binotto has achieved. 3 team bosses in 3 seasons. and they havent lacked good drivers, including their only and beloved world champ, which they've treated like trash this season infact, if it werent for budget cap, Renault wouldve most likely pulled out at the end of 2020 honestly, looking at how they're treating their only ever world champ, im glad they're failing. that team and specially Otmar & Ocon deserve the absolute worst.
@Rizvan Myrtaj I'm a bit surprised you call Alpine obscure, maybe new to motorsports? I've seen a lot of your comments copied and pasted in various vids so I'll take that as a hunch.
@Rizvan Myrtaj I guess Alpine is obscure compared to brands like Renault, Ford, Volkswagen or similar. But in the world of racing, Alpine isn't obscure (but the name change DID surprise me). I agree with other points from your other comments, though. Alpine completely let down Alonso.
As an Alonso fan, I'm gutted. Alpine's concepts and design have shown good potential, their development has been as good as any outside the big 3 and Alonso was able to showcase his outstanding ability in as high positions as he is likely to for the remainder of his career. On the other hand: a) Otmar's statements have shown a coldness to Alonso b) their strategies have generally been as poor as Ferraris c) the reliability of Alonso's car hasn't been great d) Ocon seems more intent in beating Alonso than anyone else e) the team doesn't seem too bothered about maximising their point scoring positions at the expense of Ocon's feelings. f) Piastri is someone who Alpine can’t afford to lose Do I think Aston Martin represent a step up? I don't. Vettel who I don't think is at Alonso's level, was able to work with a winning Red-Bull and a Ferrari that challenged the Mercedes, but wasn't able to make headway at AM, so it will be tough to see Alonso being able to, as he just drives around problems and probably will take satisfaction destroying another team-mate. The reality is F1 is flawed. Always has been, but certainly since the late 80s/early 90s, access to a winning F1 seat is far too limited. That a driver with Alonso's freak abilities has spent the majority of his career in cars that are not able to challenge for wins shows the ultimate flaw in marketing F1 as a drivers series.
@@valerierodger7700 I’m not sure how his behaviour has varied from other champions who demand the best car? Let’s not forget Hamilton shared telemetry from McLaren and then won 6 WDCs, Prost won a WDC after being sacked halfway through a season, Senna wouldn’t sign a contract with a team that won him 3 titles and got his shot at the car he desired, Schumacher cheated multiple times, mostly got away with it, Vettel told Whiting to f*ck himself and barged into Hamilton behind a safety car? I would love to know where these angels are? It is marketed as a driver series. Bar Ferrari fans the rest follow drivers and are led to believe they are difference makers. This only makes sense for Aston as a manufacturer if you think about it Bring in young talent to drive a sub par car? Or bring in a WC who can give proper feedback to develop the car
It suggests something not quite right behind the scenes at Alpine/Renault. Both moves look like steps down from the outside. Ricciardo’s looked like a mistake, Alonso’s looks like a pattern. Or it could just be about money.
That's not Nando tbh. Nando is a guy that just races and brings results, most often overperforming but he doesn't really galvanise teams, well not in recent years. Although tbf, he hasn't been at very good teams in recent years. I don't expect that to change either.
@@LimitPro1 I mean yeah but Alpine is a complete unit with facilities, also for all the work they've done, they're still far from a podium contender, which is at least what McLaren and Ferrari were capable of last season and what, I am pretty sure Nando would like from his team. @@F1ll1nTh3Blanks to be honest I don't think everything is looking good at Alpine since Alonso pulled the same move as DR, add to the fact they keep firing staff.
I came back to this vid to get a refresher of what the sentiments around Alonso's move to Aston Martin were now that we're two races into the 2023 season. The fact that almost everything from drivers market predictions to how the idea of Aston Martin being in the fight for wins by 2023 is delusional is truly a testament to how quickly things can change in this sport and how unpredictable those changes can be. In fact, it's actually shaking my confidence in the prediction that Aston WILL get at least one win this year exactly because of how likely that seems.
@GregoryMoore in how many years though? 2? When he's going to be 44? Aston comes from so much further than nearly every other big manufacturer team, the others won't just wait for them to come back
fair point, but take the context. renault and alpine have been stuck in the midfield for a long time now, they barely improved from last year to now. aston on the other hand will have a massive new factory/facility before the start of the 2023 season, and a brand new wind tunnel facility by summer 2023. seb made the commitment too early, alonso could be in a great window
@@wasru. yeah but you are missing the point. Renault has been making progress since McLaren overtook them in 2019. They got a win and podiums. Now they are still a good force in the midfield. Aston was good in 2020, but they've had back to back regression years. Even if alpine is still far from the top teams, aston is currently fighting for who's being last in the championship. That's way too big of a gap to bridge in only 3 years. McLaren managed it in 5, Williams is still in the dumpster
Alpine is fast because of him and now they prefer Piastri over him and probably didn't want to give him a multi year deal. Maybe they didn't even give him a deal. Combine that with Otmar and Ocon factors, it is only logical he leaves that team.
I don't think he had much of a choice. Alpine were eager to get *Piastri* in as quickly as possible. Can't imagine a generational talent like Oscar sitting on the sidelines for another TWO YEARS waiting for Alonso to finally retire!

I have to consider that Alpine wanted to move on from Alonso from the start in private, which is why he's actually going to Aston Martin. Despite Renaults subpar performance over the past decade, This makes no sense for Alonso. I hope it works out for him as an Alonso fan. But this is nothing short of a bizarre move.
I'm 100% sure he's not driving for free. I think his goals are more about competition than cash though. If they listen to him and move forward, this could be a good thing for him, but he won't be happy mired in the back of the field.
@@BlakeMcBride It certainly is a gamble, but worth it to all of its fairness. Lawrence Stroll wants a winning team and so as Alonso, and they will build that vision together.
Alpine have improved so much - and Aston have shown so little improvement. This was all about dollars and years . Fair enough . I’m just happy this opens up a seat for Oscar which was well deserved 🇦🇺
For an aging driver, dollars and years mean everything. Not that he hasn't made quite a bit in his career, but retiring in your 40s does require a nice nest egg. Plus no athlete wants to give up the sport they dedicated their life too. So if they will let him do it longer, it's a no brainer.
Actually, AM have massively improved their infrastructure and have staff from RB. They are building a massive factory just across from Silverstone if I'm not mistaken.
Alonso leaving lowers pressure on Ottmar for delivering the results and if that was Ottmar's goal it speaks very poorly of him. I do hope Alonso made a good decision this time. Overall the Stroll Motors must still be a basket case of a team if Vettel chose to leave it behind instead of milking it to the end as he clearly could have.
AM can't be that much of basket case if Vettel directly suggested Mick as a replacement to Stroll Sr. Seeing Seb and Mick have a strong relationship I can't see Seb recommending Mick go into a bad situation.
Neither Alpine or Aston martin are going to challenge for titles in the next 3 years. It makes no real difference to him wether he finished 5th in a race or 9th

They've been preparing for it for a while now, with Otmar saying he didn't decide on Alonso, hinting he didn't want him there, plus again, allowing Ocon to do what he's done this season when fighting his teammate (It's ok to fight against your mate, but not if it means that the team loses time in the race or that you're putting both cars at risk). I can foresee that if De Vries gets the Williams seat, him and Alex would be a great pairing that's sorely needed by Williams on their path to rise in the constructor standings. In 2024 or 25, Alex may then consider moving back with the Red Bull family, or perhaps even get poached by either McLaren (to replace Danny Ric), Mercedes (~statistically non zero chance of Hamilton retiring), or Haas (if Mick makes the move to Ferrari). This now opens up the seat to a more prepared Sargeant. It's incredible to think just how much Alonso vacating his Alpine seat uncomplicates the driver lineups of two teams, one of which isn't even remotely related to him.

Big reason why Alpine & Alonso hadn’t come to an agreement was probably that Williams weren’t certain on taking Piastri since Sargeant has been doing so good in F2. They probably wanted to wait and see what happens in F2 before making a decision, but Alonso surely wasn’t keen on waiting and understandably so.

Alonso doesn't make strange career decisions - he makes the singular decision available to him. No other team was going to take him. He wants to stay longer than one more year. Simple. One could argue he went to McLaren for similar reasons. No other top team wanted to offer him a seat.
Anything can happen, and Alonso's seen more of Alpine's internals than any of us, but this looks like a bad career move. Alpine seems to have a good car concept this year, and has the better of McLaren at a bunch of tracks. one wonders whether Danny Ric will jump to get his old seat back at a team where he felt better in the car. Alonso staying isn't a tough one, but whether Danny ric should stay at McLaren is - it'd suck to jump ship again only to be way slower than ocon because the car has changed.

In a way Alonso solved Alpines dilemma of getting Oscar a seat. Even though losing Alonso is not ideal it might be the best bet for the future, in the same way when Alonso left Mclaren it opened a way for Lando to join the team. Oscar has a good driver in Ocon to compare to and learn from. Oscar is the future Alpine will want to rely on.
Hope we now see - Piastri/Ocon at Alpine - Albon/De Vries at Williams Only main question is if Mick gets another deal at Haas now that AM is off the table
"I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people..." Did Laurence Stroll write that? Gotta hand it to Fernando. He's already got the AM marketing angle down pat. I've had high hopes for AM since the rebranding, and want them to succeed, and while I might be snarky about it I think this is a great move for both Fernonso and AM.
The wealth of experience Alonso will bring to AM and the progress the team will make with his input as well as being a very quick driver, is very smart move for AM.
I am eating my words today. Just last week I said there is no way Alonso would go from a 4th ranked team to a 9th, but he's done it. It seems a bit crazy, but "as an older driver" who wants to stay in F1, if someone is telling you, we're giving you 2 years, for X pay (which I'm sure is higher), and you're going to be head of the team, and we'll help build a car around you, I guess you take that deal and run with it. Happy for Piastri too who has been cooling his heels on the sidelines--hope they slot him into Alpine and maybe the likes of Logan will drive for Williams.
I know everyone is talking about Alonso's bad career decisions, but I really really really hope this is like a Lewis to Mercedes kinda thing, one can only hope.
At this point, with the amount of resources AMR are committing to F1, I think AMR might be a better get for Audi than Sauber would be. Sauber are a privateer first and foremost, while AMR are looking to turn themselves into a full on manufacturer team with facilities and everything. While AMR has future aspirations in F1, it might also be the ideal ticket for Audi given their own aspirations if AMR already has everything in place. Given how Aston Martin F1 is literally just a branding, could we see AMR switch to Audi branding?
lmao what? He left because he wanted a multi year deal and Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi only wanted to keep him in F1 for 2023. He said he wanted to make help Alpine back to the front of the grid and judging by the history of his career decisions hes basically just guaranteed their car next year will be amazing
whats that dumb logic? he left Renault twice and the year after they were nowhere near fighting for titles. Ferrari didnt fight for titles until 3 years after Alonso left, so what history are u basing urself on? not the actual one, thats for sure
I feel like there could be some awesome performances next season with Alonso in the Aston Martin AMR23, but this is something that possibly won't end well. I feel like issues between Alonso and Lance could result in an early termination of the contract, at which time Alonso will want to find another time to finish up with.
Piastri should've replaced Ocon and spent two years alongside Alonso. I don't understand why Alpine signed Ocon so long and didn't make this lineup happen.
Alpine is French, Ocon is French. In fact I'm sure there's some in the Alpine board (and I don't exactly mean the F1 team or Szafnauer, but the Alpine brand itself) that are wetting their underwear at the very, very slim possibility of signing Gasly to have an all-French team. Disregarding the fact that Gasly and Ocon don't really get along to say the least.
Mclaren and Alpine and the other 4 teams will never win another championship until they invest as aggressively as AM are doing or we get a surprise like Brawn. AM are the only team I see making the the top 3 into a top 4, and hopefully Alonso can be there at the start similar to how Michael was there for the start of Mercedes.
Good move for AM not so good for Alo. If you remember Schumi never got to reap the benefits at Merc. AM isnt going to challenge till 25 or 26 at the earliest by which point Alo will be in his mid 40s.
It's a win win for all. AM gets a senior replacement.. Wc. Race winner.. Renault gets Piastri. He gets a seat.. Alonso gets 2 years contract with lots of money..
+ Alpine's treatment of Alonso has been disgraceful, on top for vomitive comments from Otmar and Ocon almost putting him in the wall in 2 races. Alonso got fed of it, simple as that. if anything i'm surprised he hasnt walked away yet
All of the points said sound like excuses why he joined AM and left Alpine. I think he joined AM because Alpine didn't want to give a long term contract to a 40+ year old, even though he deserved it. Alpine is to blame for this and if they had given him a two year contract by now, he would be still driving for them.
I think this is generally a win for Aston Martin. Of the experienced drivers available, Alonso is probably the best bet and is unquestionably motivated by winning. Although there are questions over his ability to work harmoniously with teams, I think Aston will see an opportunity to get what they can from him. If it doesn't quite work, then there's probably a break clause. From Alonso's perspective, it's clear that Alpine are a bit of a structural mess, and I'm sure that Stroll makes a compelling argument with his winning mentality. Whether it actually works out is less sure. Alonso hasn't made the best judgements in his career, and I think he gets sucked-in by the emotions of it all.
"Questions...Work harmoniously with the teams" thats pretty much bullshit when everyone who's worked with him says he isn't disruptive. Pat Fry, Stefano Domenicali, Andrea Stella, Mark Temple, Rob Smedley and others have said that Alonso gets along with the team. Do yourself a favor and watch the documentary of his last race with Ferrari. He gets along with the team and in fact people have called him a natural leader. Stop believing the British propaganda. If he didn't work well with them would Mclaren and Renault have gotten him back?
The older I’ve got, the more I’ve come to realise Alonso is Box Office level F1 who absolutely lives for it. It’s an absolute travesty that as neutral fans we haven’t got to see him fight Lewis and Max. Everyone is mocking him for this choice but I genuinely think he’s got this one right. Aston have some proper talent in their ranks, building the ideal infrastructure and are growing. Hope he does really well there
Hey, people thought the same thing when Hamilton announced he was leaving McLaren for Mercedes in 2012. People started saying he went crazy and how he would never win more than the one championship he won by overtaking Glock in the last corner in Interlagos.
Gotta admire Alonso, totally ruthless risk taker. Would love to see him in the mix with front runners again but I just can’t see it happening. Hope I’m wrong.
I understand Fernando's desire to win and I want to see him do just that. Thing is, by the time AM is ready to be competitive (if it ever truly is) Alonso is going to be like 50. I don't think the poor guy's gonna get his wish at all...

@@robotnikkkk001 Your caps do not impress anyone.
It does not take a day to do such a serious deal
The way I see it, here are the biggest pluses and minuses:
+ Aston : Having a driver of Alonso's caliber there will not only provide valuable car development, but if they are smart enough to keep him beyond his racing career, he will help develop the car even further (other examples are Prost at Alpine, Lauda at Mercedes, etc)
+ Piastri : He is all but assured a drive in F1 next year
+ (and -) Alonso: He's moving to an inferior car.
But they are still getting what seems to be a prodigy in Piastri
- Ocon: To me Ocon hasn't always seemed like the fastest driver out there.

I agree with other points from your other comments, though. Alpine completely let down Alonso.
Oh, so that explains Ocon's defense against Alonso yesterday. In his eyes he was defending against Aston Martin
As an Alonso fan, I'm gutted. Alpine's concepts and design have shown good potential, their development has been as good as any outside the big 3 and Alonso was able to showcase his outstanding ability in as high positions as he is likely to for the remainder of his career.
On the other hand:
a) Otmar's statements have shown a coldness to Alonso
b) their strategies have generally been as poor as Ferraris
c) the reliability of Alonso's car hasn't been great
d) Ocon seems more intent in beating Alonso than anyone else
e) the team doesn't seem too bothered about maximising their point scoring positions at the expense of Ocon's feelings.
f) Piastri is someone who Alpine can’t afford to lose
Do I think Aston Martin represent a step up?

I think this is good for Aston Martin. I'm not sure it's good for Alonso. He seems like exactly what they need to get their program in order.
I don’t think Alonso will drive for free.
This is probably quite good for him.
I'm 100% sure he's not driving for free. I think his goals are more about competition than cash though. If they listen to him and move forward, this could be a good thing for him, but he won't be happy mired in the back of the field.
Ironically, given his age, Alonso can wait a year or two for the Aston to get into race winning shape.
@@JohnFromAccounting I agree. And he’s a good driver to get them there. Now the question is if they can capitalize.
It's not only dollars and years (although both of those are legitimate reasons), it's also Alpine being openly hostile towards him.
@@TheGrejp examples? you mean the inaction of Ocons aggressive defence?
Actually, AM have massively improved their infrastructure and have staff from RB. They are building a massive factory just across from Silverstone if I'm not mistaken.
Alpine has gone from 5th to 4th, only because Ricciardo is having a horrid season. This looks like their ceiling.
Wow.... A veritable truckload of baseless opinion there, well done.
AM can't be that much of basket case if Vettel directly suggested Mick as a replacement to Stroll Sr.
Seeing Seb and Mick have a strong relationship I can't see Seb recommending Mick go into a bad situation.

Honestly, Alpine's loss. They keep Ocon, a mediocre driver that doesn't know how to play for the team and lose someone who could be the ideal mentor for Piastri. Now let's wait for Audi to buy Aston Martin and let's see what happens.

I feel De Vries would be a great option if Logan Sargeant doesn't win F2 this year.
De Vries would be a good option indeed esp since hes on waiting for LH retirement witch is not happening anytime soon i think. if De Vries can get a couple of season in the meantime thats good as Merc needs time.

Vettel and Alonso's moves have clearly been decided a longer time ago than this week. Also considering there is a clip of Seb asking Verstappen for a helmet swap many races ago...
Just like any professional athlete, they want that long-term security that comes with a multi-year deal.
To be honest, i'm just happy to see Alonso continue in F1 for some more time. With Vettel and Raikkonen retiring, there's not many old foxes left.
Frankly, he is THE only one left (Hamilton still has a few years before he can be legit considered an old fox considering how far back Alonso's career stretches)
Alpine were treating Alonso like Piastri's seat-warmer.
The only issue I see at AMR is Stroll getting the preference. We've seen how despite Vettel developing the car, it was Stroll that would come out on top and it was mainly through strategy. I really hope Alonso's driving proves this wrong and shows just where Stroll stands vs where Alonso finishes.
With a multi year deal on the cards, if Alonso hadn't of taken the seat then surely Ricciardo would have gone.
Aston are making great efforts to build a decent team, hopefully that will come to fruition.
Am I correct in saying that Fernando will be the only driver to have raced with engines from each manufacturer?

@@ivanmacgar6447 tbf, the McLaren Renault didn't fair all that much better because of the shitbox chassis which was made less apparent because of the GP2 engine
The move makes perfect sense to be honest! Alonso was only ever going to be holding the seat for Piastri as it was evident Ocon and Piastri are the future for the team! Aston Martin gives Alonso the chance to be number 1 driver again and most importantly on a huge multi year contract!
Alonso shouldn’t even be a question anymore when you have Piastri there, it’s ludicrous, sooner you get Piastri in the Alpine sooner he performs. I don’t know why the prolonged it when Piastri is going to offer more than Ocon or Alonso ever will
@@MaCcAM40a3 Offer more? Piastri is untested. Did you forget who won Alpine's first win for them? If not for Alonso defending against a much faster Hamilton in 2021, they wouldn't never have had that win and they know it. You 🤡

@@rumblefish9 yeah but by saying that he means long term, Alpine could have 4-5 years of Piastri for what they paid Alonso in one year, he means that Piastri is the future number 1 there. @@MaCcAM40a3 sorry but have to disagree, Piastri has done everything right so far but he can’t be compared to a 2 time WDC with 32 career victories, that to me is ludicrous. We’ll probably get to see Oscar in 2023, having sat a year out won’t do him much bad as he’s been well influxed with the team, partaking in constant testing, probably more than every other driver.
Alonso doesn't make strange career decisions - he makes the singular decision available to him. No other team was going to take him. He wants to stay longer than one more year. Simple. One could argue he went to McLaren for similar reasons. No other top team wanted to offer him a seat.
The reason is money. He wants that daddy Stroll money. Simple as that.
Fernando's gonna make Stroll look much worse than Seb or Perez ever did...
Eh, Stroll's been up and down with Vettel, but Perez made him look like a pleb. Back then you could argue youth, but not anymore.

In a way Alonso solved Alpines dilemma of getting Oscar a seat. Even though losing Alonso is not ideal it might be the best bet for the future, in the same way when Alonso left Mclaren it opened a way for Lando to join the team. Only main question is if Mick gets another deal at Haas now that AM is off the table
Remember there were rumours and a leaked document that Fernando was approached by Racing point (Aston Martin) in 2020 before Vettel was available
Aston has taken lots of talent from Mercedes and Red Bull. They also have Martin Whitmarsh.
Exactly what I thought.....I do hope so.
Very simply, he left because of Ocon. The team did not behave as a team. And Alpine will never progress like that.
lmao what? He left because he wanted a multi year deal and Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi only wanted to keep him in F1 for 2023. He certainly didn't decide to leave cause Ricciardo passed him because of Ocon's strong defense yesterday. If you believe that had anything to do with the decision you're delusional. whats that dumb logic? he left Renault twice and the year after they were nowhere near fighting for titles.
