They failed in season upgrades last year and benefitted from Merc/Ferrari dropping the ball to start, but otherwise still trending forward. Also a lot of their new facilities are yet to be meaningfully leveraged; F1 cars don't pop into existence come preseason testing, they're mostly developed the prior year. Their 2025 car is well into development right now and they still don't have the new wind tunnel/simulator.

Aston Martin is the NBA Miami Heat of racing. When the Heat acquired LeBron James, with Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosch, they basically had an All-Star team with LeBron and Wade declaring "we just not gonna win one championship, two, three, four...." implying they will win multiple. Aston Martin acquired some All-Stars from rivals, including Dan Fallows from Red Bull, Eric Blandin from Mercedes, Andy Cowell from Mercedes, Enrico Cardile from Ferrari, among others and waiting in the wing is design guru Newey. Stroll is a massive part of the problem, though. Only a Canadian would suggest otherwise! Stroll has the most underserving seat in F1 next to Latifi, Mazepin and Sargant. And no, his F3 championship bought by his dad back then by buying the team marred in controversy doesn't really make the buck for an F1 seat - skipping F2 entirely.
292 points over 157 races, not one single win and highest third finish. His failure to acknowledge his own mistakes and outright poor awareness levels leading to crashes repeatedly over several years (Safety Car crash this year, swerving into drivers passing him, for example). You could give him the fastest car by a country mile, he's not cutting the first driver material some strange fans of him seem to think he's worthy of. Even AM's Mike Krack explicitly said the team was built around Stroll. This mentality is what will cost them when they have WDC winners racing for them and being used as a thought box over prioritising and maximising their carry of points for the team.

To be fair, they said "contenders" and not "winners". McLaren were in the hunt during the 2010-2012 seasons, and Ferrari had a title shot in 2017 and 2018. You can argue that Alonso would have gotten more out of those cars than the drivers who actually drove them at those times and potentially pushed the likes of Red Bull and Merc a lot harder. Even Renault - as Lotus - had a regular podium-finishing car in 2012/2013 that won 2x races which was a huge improvement on their post-Alonso era performance

I don't think Lawrence Stroll is the right person to turn this from midfielders into contenders - he's a fashion businessman, not a racer. You can't take what worked in his realm into F1, they're very different demands. Not to mention the fact that just because you hire big names on the technical team doesn't mean they'll all gel. It doesnt matter what Aston Martin does or throws at the car ... while they have Lance in a seat , its not going anywhere ... they rely far too much on his input and because of that the car will never be good enough.
As for Newey , there is no doubt in his design brilliance ... its clear from this years Red Bull , he isnt infallible and just having him on the team designing the car again doesnt mean they will automatically be fast.
Red Bull are struggling this year with a car that is no where near as good as last years and Newey doesnt seem to be able to fix his design woes

Alonso has been a controversial figure but teams have tolerated (to an extent) his antics because of his skill. Ricciardo had lost his mojo but got a second chance, firstly because of the skill he had demonstrated, but also because of the marketing potential he has. Stroll has one of the worst attitudes on the grid, has zero marketing potential because of it and is certainly not a driver who performs miracles at the wheel to overshadow that negative trait.
The fact that every team member knows that only one driver can extract the maximum out of their car consistently, costing the team points and personell any potential WCC position bonus, at a time when F1 teams simply do not pay enough relative to the workload and ingenuity that goes into those cars. If that wasn't enough Lance Stroll paints the picture that he is never at fault so what motivation, other than pure passion would an "average" Engineer or Mechanic have to justify the long hours they put in with the benefits they get?

The number 2 drivers is irrelevant. Redbull had Webber and Perez. Mercedes had Bottas. Ferrari had Barrichello.
None of those drivers are capable of winning the title even with a dominant car.
Stroll doesn’t deserve a WDC seat but he deserves a seat in F1. His on track results are better than Hulkenberg.
