They'd be 2nd in the championship if not for Stroll. It doesn't matter how good the car is at what part of the season, Stroll treating the sport like his weekend hobby is what is keeping this team back.

If Stroll scored points equal to Alonso in the first half of the season, i think aston martin would still hold a comfortable lead to mercedes and ferrari. Think of all the second and 3rds they could have gotten.

While yes, the team is sliding backwards, if Stroll would have been up there with Alo, then they would have a big enough cushion to hold off Mercedes and still potentially be second and at worse only finish a close third. Instead, Stroll has been an anchor around the neck of the AMR23 and has held them back.
Recency bias would make the sesaon seem like a disappointment, but at the end of the day it has been a great season for them. Let's hope for 2024 they can learn from this.
I would disagree, Alonso has had a great season, from the team's perspective, they could have had so much more if they 2 f1 drivers instead of 1 f1 driver and 1 Sunday driver. The team's performance should be seen from the perspective of the performance of both drivers.
The huge difference between McLaren & Aston Martin is that the former seem to understand their development path. Aston Martin don't. They seem to have struck gold in the off-season but not once did an update work.
poaching ideas from other teams without understanding the technicalities will do that, it wouldn't surprise me if 2024 starts off rough for Aston but steadily improves, given they will have had more time to actually understand what has and has not worked. I also think developing heavily into the final third of the season is a mistake, it has been clear to me at least since Canada that they do not fully understand why certain aspects of their car work and others don't, adding more upgrades to the mystery likely will not help.

They brought a big upgrade to Canada to solve the car's weaknesses, mainly DRS efficiency and straight line speed. And according to the statements from the team, the updates in fact helped with those problem. This is also represented in the data from race weekends. The problem though, the updates also brought some unexpected side effects. Mainly narrowing the operating window of the car. This also explains why the car had a good pace in some weekends like Canada and Netherlands. You also can see the car's balance is really bad at most weekends, which wasn't the case in the start of the season. So, the updates they're planning to bring are mainly to address these issues, which they weren't able to detect on their simulations. That's why it would also help with developing next years car which is going to be an evolution of this year's car. The problem though, they are not able to bring the updates. For example the new front wing should have arrived at the Friday morning of Singapore weekend according to the teams statements but it didn't. It also wasn't there last weekend. I'm hoping these are because of some production problems related to moving to a new factory but there are no explanations they have made till now to the press
The gap between Stroll and Nando in inexcusable. Aston Martin simply cannot be a championship contending team if they have Stroll. He costs too much money both in crashes and points lost.

Tbh I don't get why the media is using Alonso's radio comment as " Oh Alonso is showing his true colours again". In my understanding he was complaining to the team that they boxed him too early right into traffic. That has nothing to do with getting impatient and frustrated with the team. I’m relatively new to F1 as a fan. Halfway through Max’s rookie season was my introduction via a Dutch friend. It’s taken me awhile to wrap my head around how long it takes for teams to gel and move from backmarker to midfield, from midfield to contender, etc. Changes implemented now won’t blossom until 12-18 months from now. Maybe longer
Williams is the best team to look at in this regard. If you mess up the car, you will be rowing against the tide for years, and it will take a huge toll on costs, staff and culture. Williams with Massa-Stroll has absolutely nothing to do with Williams with Albon-Sargeant. They've had to change almost everything to see a substancial change and they are still far from being established in the midfield! F1 is brutal, but so interesting when you dive into these depths.
The most important part of F1 to learn and get used to is Red Bull, Max Verstappen, and Michael Massi STOLE Lewis Hamiltons world championship in 2021. And bizarrely them, the FIA and thier fans carry on like nothing happened.

While the technical details are neat and all, the elephant in the room is never going to stop being Lance Stroll. Aston Martin is a one car team right now and they'd easily be fighting for a P3 team finish (at minimum) if they had more double points weekends
Don’t beat around the bush, yes it’s Aston Martin under developing their car due to what ever constraints it has. But its mainly Lance stroll not pushing his weight like Alonso has in helping with development of the AMR and scoring points like Alonso to help keep the points coming in
My theory that ive not heard anyone else discuss is AM lost some momentum as they are transitioning into the new factory. I think that stalled their 2023 in season development.🤷♂ We'll know next year or since the factory is supposed to provide big advantages in cost savings, efficiency and they still havent finished the wind tunnel
They found a loophole in the regulations and the FIA closed it down because it was not "within the spirit of the regulations". I am guessing front wing had ALOT to do with it. The Canada updates masked that due to the track because it suited the car but ever since has been a big downward spiral. Holland was an exception but everywhere else they're 3rd or 4th best, sometimes even 5th and 6th best. It's only Alonso's brilliance keeping them in the points.
If Mini Stroller were competent or was replaced by someone competent, I do believe they would be 3rd comfortably. The weak link is junior Stroller and is also one of the most expensive drivers on the grid (crash after crash after crash).
My friend back in Japan works at the Suzuka Circuit hotel- From all the cool stories of meeting and checking drivers in, the biggest standout was Stroll checking in seemingly hungover with a bunch of golf bags and diva-like requests for his room.
Aston Martin are literally fighting with one hand tied behind their back. Lance Stroll neither contributes points, nor - apparently - is he able to help develop the car further during the season. Fernando needs a better teammate.
Alonso and AMR have already overachieved with all that has been done so far this season. We know that the truth is that nobody expected them to fight for podiums or even points in every race and Alonso was hoping that 2024 would be the breaktrough year with the new factory and wind tunnel. The rise of McLaren to this level is also something unexpected to happen midseason, and hopefully next year AMR have a better development plan for the car.
Aston Martin have overachieved. Not Alonso. Alonso’s underachieved and still hasn’t won a race. Even during peak Mercedes domination Ferrari (Vettel) and Redbull (Max, Ricciardo) were stealing wins from Mercedes. This is the first time the top team has no competition from the 2nd best team. Leclerc, Lewis, Russell, Max and Vettel would’ve won in Monaco with that Aston Martin
This was their first season competing with the big teams and its a success regardless of how they finish. They will definitely be back next season with new factory fully functional. The only concern is that its not just other teams out-developing them, they have definitely gone somewhere wrong in their own development. They were one of the fastest in slow speed corners and very good in medium speed corners. Their Tyre Deg was one of the best in the field. They have lost those strengths. Alonso is still extracting every bit of performance out of that car.
Its their 2nd season. Remember 2020 and the pink Mercede (and they we're punished for illegal copying)? This is the Same Team. Buy a RB top Designer, Take what he knows, build a strong Copy Car, fail all continued development. 2nd halve of 2023 IS the same as 2021. I think the biggest thing that people forget is that Alonso steered basically the entire development of the car in preseason testing. Its such a huge session development/setup-wise, and it led to the cars being specifically tailored to Alonso. Lance came in for the first race having had no chance to provide feedback, and had to drive what was for all intents and purposes Alonso's car. What suits Alonso clearly doesn't suit Stroll.
It's actually not true, Lance prefer an understeery set up, as it allows him to feel the car far better since less unpredictable. This is very much something Alonso likes as well, yet he is crushing Lance. It just showcases Lance limits and his lack od concentration.

Yea but they are still rebuilding. They are in talks with someone for a works partnership and that has been beneficial to any team that has one, and like I said Aston had just took this team over what 2 or 3 years ago and they have had to build up their team and cars around them, it takes time to get the partnerships, and to design your car to work with every aspect of a race and win. I think over the next few years the top teams will be red bull, McLaren Ferrari Mercedes and I think Aston will start competing with these teams over the next few years.
The performance and result drop-off is not "bad" - it just is what it is, and highlights the competitiveness of the series overall, with other teams development waxing and waning as well. It would help the team if Alonso had the support of another driver on the track, rather than fighting it alone against other dual driver teams. They can make strategic moves whereas he can't, and he is the best strategic driver out there.
He was much better was a 18yo rookie from F3 compared to now. It’s because the car has been developed to suit Alonso. Massa, Kimi, Vandoorne, Button all had the same problems.
On the development front, Lawrence Stroll's approach of buying the champion's car and painting it pink or green probably isn't doing the engineers any favors when it comes to grasping and developing a concept

Aston finishing 5th in the constructors would be such a failure. It definitely feels like the so-called "upgrades" since Canada actually served to make the car worse
I think what's important is that this shows Aston can build a good platform to begin with, something Mercedes struggled with even. Next they need to put it together, and once they have their full facilities I am confident they will do just that. Next year, they probably will start strong again
Part of me hopes that next year Ferrari can finally FINALLY get their sh*t together. Add to that a resurgent McLaren and an Aston Martin in an upward trajectory. I would love to see Mercedes demoted to the 5th team on the grid. .
Personally I think they've just been concentrating on next year's car for ages and are doubling down using this year's and next year's allowance to make it as good as possible. Also being lower this year in the constructors means you have more for next year (wind tunnel and CFD) so it makes perfect sense if you know you won't beat red bull this year

Aston Martin hit the ground running at the start of the year - punching above their weight. Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren have all made forward progress at a greater rate than Aston Martin and have overtaken them. Their failure is lack of relative development compared to the opposition
Problem is they aren't good in high speed tracks, which sucks because gaining top speed is probably harder than improving an already good aero package. I want to trust their process, but I fear they might stay stagnant in 2024.

Seems like everyone else has been working on their cars while Aston Martin has the same exact car they started the season off with. There's only three races left in the season. Just how much deeper can the development go?
Even with McLaren's miracle turnaround, Aston Martin would've been fine for 4th (and maybe even fighting for higher) if their second driver wasn't Lance Stroll. Like, it was fine while he's still developing but it seems like he's reached the peak of his ability for a couple years now. Dude's had a solid run as an F1 driver, I'm not gonna disrespect what he's accomplished, but yeah. Keeping him now means accepting that the results you're seeing now are the best you're going to get out of him.
Stroll put in better results with a broken hand, or as a 18yo rookie jumping in from F3. Aston Martin have just developed the car to suit Alonso which is why Stroll is massively struggling. The same reason why Kimi, Massa, Vandoorne and Button struggled. With Redbull you can see that with Perez but Redbull is a fast car, AM however just made their car undriveable. If they put a little oversteer in, Stroll would be performing better.
Again! Not taken into consideration the possibility that teams are incentivised to underperform especially if they’re working on something. They realise they won’t beat RBR, so why perform and finish higher up the ranking and be punished for your performance which inhibits your ability to work with more resources on your next car? I’m not saying it’s the only reason but it absolutely can be a factor the race casually ignores since the budget cap rulings.

I’ve always been shot down for this opinion BUT, I’ve always felt Alonso is incapable of driving development of his teams cars. At Renault he had a very good team, with some major technology advantages and a team mate who despite being slower was a very good development driver.
Stroll has to go. He just cannot compete with Alonso. If a good driver was in that car Aston would have dropped off but they would still be safe if they had an extra hundred points to their name.
I really think it's mainly because of their design strategy. They have been taking other teams' concepts for years now, even going back into the Racing Point/Force India days. When you 'copy' a concept from a different team, you will not be able to understand the concept at its base as well as the team you took it from. AM took the Red Bull concept and went with it. They have to get credit for the job they've done because they came out with a very solid car (2nd fastest at the start of the season), but you can clearly see that they do not know how to develop this car effectively. They have the means to do it, but they'll never beat Red Bull this way. They might beat everyone else, but they will never be 1st. I hope they change their methods, because they have a lot of great stuff in place and I like the team. Also, Lance Stroll. That is definitely not helping. Lawrence Stroll has to put his money where his mouth is (we want to become World Champion, whatever it takes), and fire Lance. This is just never gonna work out. Lance does not have what it takes.
@@wiegraf9009the difference between Mclaren and Aston is Mclaren seem to have a very good idea of how to improve there car. Every single upgrade has made it better whereas a lot of astons doesn’t work. It also help Mclaren originally started with the same suspension setup as redbull so they may have a easier time copying redbull as well as they have a pretty good grasp of what they can do themselves to make the car better

To put Strolls performance under the spot light here's a terrible stat. Alonso has 174 points after 16 races, Stroll has 47, just over a quarter... Stroll has only managed to get roughly 21 of those 47 points in the last 13 races...
Regarding the difference between Alonso and Stroll: all we know is there is a big gap. Would the gap be the same if they replaced Stroll with someone else? Don't know, but maybe Stroll isn't as bad as most commenters think. Alonso has a track record of being really strong compared to the second driver of the team, so I would not be as quick to judge Stroll. And yes, we know he is there because he is the son of. But still, don't underestimate Alonso. Just because he is much faster doesn't mean Stroll is a bad driver. Look what happened to Verstappen when they messed up the setup of the car. Maybe the Aston Martin is that difficult to drive...
For me they got the pace from the early red bull copycat concept. But their lack of development place and effectiveness that's plagued them under Lawrence strolls ownership. They had similar issues as force India. So for me their structure must be looked at as its clear they are still ill equipped to fight the big names especial without a factory pu.
Budget cap, probably they have been policed by F1, so no new parts for 2023 car; the season now are long, and burn your budget at beginning has a big implication in the overall season. Agree with all the Lancelot comments. But Lance is an advantage: with only Fernando scoring points, Aston will be much lower in constructors ranking, which will help with aero and CFD time.
If you look at what RBR has done this year it seems there are ways to develop the car with a minimum of both. Somehow they've just kept bringing killer upgrades despite all the restrictions.
Its a shame you didn't think to look at the timeline of all the upgrades from the middle of the pack. That's one of the main reasons for the leapfrogging of various teams in front of their rivals 🙄 Plus they'll get extra aero and development time if they drop a place or two

But every drivers has own strength & weekness. The way Alonso adapted the cars irrespective of conditions is literally insane which so much better than Vettel.(this too said by Mike Krack to skysport). Thats why there is no huge gap between Vettel & Stroll last 2 years. But Alonso almost destroyed him even with Bad car since Silverstone. He is only one who had 100 percent Q3 apperence irrespective of car.

While yes, the team is sliding backwards, if Stroll would have been up there with Alo, then they would have a big enough cushion to hold off Mercedes and still potentially be second and at worse only finish a close third.
Instead, Stroll has been an anchor around the neck of the AMR23 and has held them back.

The huge difference between McLaren & Aston Martin is that the former seem to understand their development path. Aston Martin don't. They seem to have struck gold in the off-season but not once did an update work.
And McLaren have better drivers. Oscar Piastri should have been picked up by AM when he was out of contract, why the fuck not?
poaching ideas from other teams without understanding the technicalities will do that, it wouldn't surprise me if 2024 starts off rough for Aston but steadily improves, given they will have had more time to actually understand what has and has not worked.
I also think developing heavily into the final third of the season is a mistake, it has been clear to me at least since Canada that they do not fully understand why certain aspects of their car work and others don't, adding more upgrades to the mystery likely will not help.

They brought a big upgrade to Canada to solve the car's weaknesses, mainly DRS efficiency and straight line speed. And according to the statements from the team, the updates in fact helped with those problem. This is also represented in the data from race weekends. The problem though, the updates also brought some unexpected side effects. Mainly narrowing the operating window of the car. This also explains why the car had a good pace in some weekends like Canada and Netherlands. You also can see the car's balance is really bad at most weekends, which wasn't the case in the start of the season. So, the updates they're planning to bring are mainly to address these issues, which they weren't able to detect on their simulations. That's why it would also help with developing next years car which is going to be an evolution of this year's car. The problem though, they are not able to bring the updates. For example the new front wing should have arrived at the Friday morning of Singapore weekend according to the teams statements but it didn't. It also wasn't there last weekend. I'm hoping these are because of some production problems related to moving to a new factory but there are no explanations they have made till now to the press

I’m relatively new to F1 as a fan. Halfway through Max’s rookie season was my introduction via a Dutch friend. It’s taken me awhile to wrap my head around how long it takes for teams to gel and move from backmarker to midfield, from midfield to contender, etc.
Changes implemented now won’t blossom until 12-18 months from now. Maybe longer
Williams is the best team to look at in this regard. If you mess up the car, you will be rowing against the tide for years, and it will take a huge toll on costs, staff and culture. Williams with Massa-Stroll has absolutely nothing to do with Williams with Albon-Sargeant. They've had to change almost everything to see a substancial change and they are still far from being established in the midfield! F1 is brutal, but so interesting when you dive into these depths.
The most important part of F1 to learn and get used to is Red Bull, Max Verstappen, and Michael Massi STOLE Lewis Hamiltons world championship in 2021. And bizarrely them, the FIA and thier fans carry on like nothing happened.

They quite simply took some development directions that didn't yield any results while everyone else caught up.
They found a loophole in the regulations and the FIA closed it down because it was not "within the spirit of the regulations". I am guessing front wing had ALOT to do with it. The Canada updates masked that due to the track because it suited the car but ever since has been a big downward spiral. Holland was an exception but everywhere else they're 3rd or 4th best, sometimes even 5th and 6th best. It's only Alonso's brilliance keeping them in the points.
If Mini Stroller were competent or was replaced by someone competent, I do believe they would be 3rd comfortably. The weak link is junior Stroller and is also one of the most expensive drivers on the grid (crash after crash after crash).

Alonso and AMR have already overachieved with all that has been done so far this season. We know that the truth is that nobody expected them to fight for podiums or even points in every race and Alonso was hoping that 2024 would be the breaktrough year with the new factory and wind tunnel. The rise of McLaren to this level is also something unexpected to happen midseason, and hopefully next year AMR have a better development plan for the car.

This was their first season competing with the big teams and its a success regardless of how they finish. They will definitely be back next season with new factory fully functional. The only concern is that its not just other teams out-developing them, they have definitely gone somewhere wrong in their own development. They were one of the fastest in slow speed corners and very good in medium speed corners. Their Tyre Deg was one of the best in the field. They have lost those strengths. Alonso is still extracting every bit of performance out of that car.
Its their 2nd season. Remember 2020 and the pink Mercede (and they we're punished for illegal copying)? This is the Same Team. Buy a RB top Designer, Take what he knows, build a strong Copy Car, fail all continued development. 2nd halve of 2023 IS the same as 2021.

I think the biggest thing that people forget is that Alonso steered basically the entire development of the car in preseason testing. Its such a huge session development/setup-wise, and it led to the cars being specifically tailored to Alonso. Lance came in for the first race having had no chance to provide feedback, and had to drive what was for all intents and purposes Alonso's car. What suits Alonso clearly doesn't suit Stroll.
It's actually not true, Lance prefer an understeery set up, as it allows him to feel the car far better since less unpredictable.

It's a one man team. Simple as that.
Yea but they are still rebuilding. They are in talks with someone for a works partnership and that has been beneficial to any team that has one, and like I said Aston had just took this team over what 2 or 3 years ago and they have had to build up their team and cars around them, it takes time to get the partnerships, and to design your car to work with every aspect of a race and win. I think over the next few years the top teams will be red bull, McLaren Ferrari Mercedes and I think Aston will start competing with these teams over the next few years.
The performance and result drop-off is not "bad" - it just is what it is, and highlights the competitiveness of the series overall, with other teams development waxing and waning as well.
It would help the team if Alonso had the support of another driver on the track, rather than fighting it alone against other dual driver teams. They can make strategic moves whereas he can't, and he is the best strategic driver out there.

Personally I think they've just been concentrating on next year's car for ages and are doubling down using this year's and next year's allowance to make it as good as possible. Also being lower this year in the constructors means you have more for next year (wind tunnel and CFD) so it makes perfect sense if you know you won't beat red bull this year

9:05 The “undriveable” radio message was actually legit. After the race the car was found to have significant suspension damage since lap 2. So it wasn’t that Alonso was criticizing the team, it was that the car was - in fact - undriveable. At least not up to its normal performance capacity.

Even with McLaren's miracle turnaround, Aston Martin would've been fine for 4th (and maybe even fighting for higher) if their second driver wasn't Lance Stroll. Like, it was fine while he's still developing but it seems like he's reached the peak of his ability for a couple years now. Keeping him now means accepting that the results you're seeing now are the best you're going to get out of him.

I’ve always been shot down for this opinion BUT, I’ve always felt Alonso is incapable of driving development of his teams cars. At Renault he had a very good team, with some major technology advantages and a team mate who despite being slower was a very good development driver.
I think the same, all the teams he drove for had dramatic downfalls.

Stroll has to go. He just cannot compete with Alonso. If a good driver was in that car Aston would have dropped off but they would still be safe if they had an extra hundred points to their name.

I really think it's mainly because of their design strategy. They have been taking other teams' concepts for years now, even going back into the Racing Point/Force India days. When you 'copy' a concept from a different team, you will not be able to understand the concept at its base as well as the team you took it from. AM took the Red Bull concept and went with it. They have to get credit for the job they've done because they came out with a very solid car (2nd fastest at the start of the season), but you can clearly see that they do not know how to develop this car effectively. They have the means to do it, but they'll never beat Red Bull this way. They might beat everyone else, but they will never be 1st.
I hope they change their methods, because they have a lot of great stuff in place and I like the team. Also, Lance Stroll. That is definitely not helping. Lawrence Stroll has to put his money where his mouth is (we want to become World Champion, whatever it takes), and fire Lance. This is just never gonna work out. Lance does not have what it takes.

McLaren copied RBR but they did it better and they happened to have a suspension configuration that helped them with doing so.

To put Strolls performance under the spot light here's a terrible stat.
Alonso has 174 points after 16 races, Stroll has 47, just over a quarter... Stroll has only managed to get roughly 21 of those 47 points in the last 13 races...
Regarding the difference between Alonso and Stroll: all we know is there is a big gap. Would the gap be the same if they replaced Stroll with someone else? Don't know, but maybe Stroll isn't as bad as most commenters think.
Alonso has a track record of being really strong compared to the second driver of the team, so I would not be as quick to judge Stroll. And yes, we know he is there because he is the son of. But still, don't underestimate Alonso. Just because he is much faster doesn't mean Stroll is a bad driver. Look what happened to Verstappen when they messed up the setup of the car. Maybe the Aston Martin is that difficult to drive...
For me they got the pace from the early red bull copycat concept. But their lack of development place and effectiveness that's plagued them under Lawrence strolls ownership. They had similar issues as force India. So for me their structure must be looked at as its clear they are still ill equipped to fight the big names especial without a factory pu.

Agree with all the Lancelot comments. But Lance is an advantage: with only Fernando scoring points, Aston will be much lower in constructors ranking, which will help with aero and CFD time.
If you look at what RBR has done this year it seems there are ways to develop the car with a minimum of both. Somehow they've just kept bringing killer upgrades despite all the restrictions.

If Stroll snr was serious about AM he would have got rid of Stroll jnr a while ago, it sucks to see what could be a higher positioned team lose out because of 'Daddys Boy'
As long as Stroll jnr drives for the team it makes it impossible for people to invest in the team, whether that be financial or emotionally as a fan

Car's front end is very steady and the rear unpredictable on corner entry, Alonso doesn't like that.

But they rebounded throughout the season and Mike Krack himself credited it to Vettel.

Development evolution of Vettel on car is absolutely high after Schumi ngl. He is so clever inspecting car evaluation.
But every drivers has own strength & weekness. The way Alonso adapted the cars irrespective of conditions is literally insane which so much better than Vettel.(this too said by Mike Krack to skysport).
Thats why there is no huge gap between Vettel & Stroll last 2 years. But Alonso almost destroyed him even with Bad car since Silverstone. He is only one who had 100 percent Q3 apperence irrespective of car.
Imagine if they had another good driver besides Alonso. They really need to get rid of Lance I can't even believe that the stockholders are letting this go on when it's obvious that guy shouldn't be driving in F1.
