It's impressive how Andrea Stella and Mika Hakkinen both called it at the start of the season and stood firm when people mocked it

    • @Gatotsu2009
      @Gatotsu2009 8 месяцев назад +34

Most people mocked them because it´s hard to find big gains in the middle of a season (and is even worse with the budget cap). The concept layout of James Key was right but the aero pieces were not, glad they improve this season but I think Mclaren must learn in 24/25 how to develop a car that can challenge RB for wins (like Merc in 2012/13 before the 2014 hybrid era).

If people paid attention, McLaren did say at the start of the season, that the late regulation changes effected their development plans and that it would be a slow start for them to get where they expected to be in terms of gains. So basically, underneath the "tractor" was always a thoroughbred.

One thing I dont see anyone mention is the fact Mclaren is the only team that use the same pullrod / pushrod like the RedBull since the 2022 car (no one copied that concept for 23). Watching Mclaren improvement is clear is any team want to achieve the same ride height control than the RB then copying the suspension layout is a must.
2024 will be a great test for the team because the car will be develop under a new technical team + windtunnel and how good they are will set the tone for 2026 rules change challenge.

    • @vinno97

Not a suspension expert, but aren't push and pullrods functionally identical? I remember hearing it's mostly an aerodynamic choice

@vinno97 this is my understanding also, but I'm assuming its the aero that makes a difference on the suspension front, given how sensitive the upper/under floor and diffuser are to airflow.

I think 2025 will be their target to fight for a championship. In my opinion, 2024 will be more of a consistency year for them and get the car fixed. Consistency as in can they actually get in close to the top 3 every single race. I think even Lando said the current car is hard to drive despite being fast. If everything goes well, they'll probably be able to win a few a races in the beginning of 2024 before the Red Bulls dominate again.

I had my doubts about Stella. I was worried that Seidl - who at least seemed to be a major force behind the turnaround from 2018-2020 - I was worried that with him leaving, McLaren would slide back again. Then when they turned up to Bahrain so frigging slow, I thought they were destined to be backmarkers again. But Stella proved me wrong.

There is real potential in this rules set because they're the only team other than Red Bull to have the same suspension layout, they've copied Red Bull aero, they're bringing in a Red Bull chief of a technical department. They've also got a Ferrari leader there and bringing in another one. Let's hope these minds can free flow great ideas and not be stifled by a matrix management structure as the Ron Dennis way was. Let's also hope they also work well together. Finally, they've gotta start cooking with that wind tunnel and simulation and have good correlation which is something Andrea Stella said they worked on this year. Mika Hakkinen sounded like a madman when he said it but I saw some truth in his words and now it's there for all to see. Let's also hope the car is easier to drive for a couple of different driving styles.

Much as I want as many teams as possible to be fighting for the championships next year, and much as I genuinely believe that both McLaren and Mercedes stand the best chance at doing it, we would do well to remember that Red Bull have been working on next year's car for ages.
They've already won the team championship thanks to that awesome car, and thanks to one of the most gifted drivers I've seen since Lewis joined F1 (there are other potential champs, Lando & Oscar included, but Max and Lewis are, IMHO, two of the greatest natural talents ever seen. Note, I didn't say _the_ greatest; you can't compare different eras, it's not a reasonable comparison. Neither am I going to list every 21st century champ. You know who the greats are).
I believe that those two teams in particular, possibly others (but I don't feel it quite so strongly), will be noticeably better at the start of 2024 than they were at the start of this one. They'll be making giant - in F1 terms - leaps towards the front and I _do_ expect to see "proper wins" (i.e. hard fought ones, not ones relying on the RBs blowing a gasket or weird conditions, etc), but I think we'll have to settle for the odd wins (occasional, not peculiar). I honestly think Max will get his 4th championship in a row next year and potentially number 5 in '25.
After that, it's the next set of new regs, and one team will get them right and will undoubtedly run away with both championships. Which team & driver that will be is anyone's guess, but this is what the history of F1 has _always_ been like since it started.
Don't hammer McLaren in particular if they do well but not well enough. Remember what they'll most likely (99% chance IMHO) be up against. Getting a few wins, especially for Lando given his shorter contract, will have to be enough for now.

There's teams that have been trying to do that all year, and the fact that mclaren surpassed them all already merits a lot of praise, but their aim next year really should be to be at the front of these teams trying to close the gap. Lando is currently the better more complete and consistent driver, however, Piastri is still extremely talented and has demonstrated the capability to outperforming Lando on occasions, not yet consistently, but in the right conditions or situation he is perfectly capable of upsetting Lando, and that may just be for the first win.

teams have asperations - there are 9 other teams all with the same asperations. Sure Lando will move on at the end of contract if not a championship team, but its more about being competitive than winning trophy. Mclaren dont disolve if Lando leaves you know. They will sign another driver - and any car that is regular podium contender is going to get people wanting to go there. The Board want the car up at the front end - thats what matters.

F1 also attracts a sizable cohort of passionate followers with seemingly extreme views and opinions on drivers and teams etc, some more nutty and on the fringe than others. Often they excessively love or hate (or even love to hate) particular drivers and are very vocal of their support or distain in comments sections, brarracking or sledging like they would at a footy final; in most cases with no actual malice or ill intent.
