When he's talking about "Broadway" he's not thinking about the glitz of NYC's Broadway theater district. He's talking about the Broadway in Buffalo NY, that used to be a bustling ethnic area that was filled with markets, stores, and pubs. But over time with the industry leaving the area, Broadway has become a hollowed out husk of a region.

John promised himself if he didn't have a hit song by the time he was 30, he would quit music. 'name' hit the charts when he was 29, and now he is in the rock and roll hall of Fame for song writing.

So my two year old nephew was crying, screaming. He was running around the house and I happened to be watching Rock Block and this song came on, he immediately quit crying. Walked to the tv. And watched the whole video. He went to sleep right after. Goo Goo Dolls work wonders
the vibe of goo goo dolls is badass. I don't know why but I feel like I'm connected to this band. they talk about society, human problems. lost and suicidal I dont know how to explain.. but this band speak deeper part of myself.
I remember being 23 and hearing this song in a hole in the wall bar surrounded by people 20 to 40 years older than me and that line about the young man sitting in the old man's bar waiting for his time to die really resonated with me.
I had a double resonation with it. When I was a young child, the line "You talk about the world like it's some place that you've been" was something I frequently thought about the authority figures in my life. The people who proclaimed to know things that they knew nothing about. Then, when I became an adult and put away my childishness, the second resonation came when I realized that "We're all just children forever, talking about the world like it's someplace that we've been." I suppose that's the magic of the Goo Goo Dolls songs. They mean something different at 16 than they do at 24. They mean something different at 18 than they do at 30. You talk about the world like it's someplace that you've been.
Damn if I don’t feel like that anyway. I’m turning 33 next month and I’m already a widower and I just experienced my 2nd breakup since her death this very evening.
I'll always remember being a junior in high school in 2001 fall playing soccer. In the locker room and this song came on and a senior started singing it. I gotta laugh every time. Memories

Watching this video gets me all nostalgic; the 90's were definitely the best. Since then, good mainstream music has been dying a very slow and gruesome death.
@@canaisyoung3601 It was the last decade where the facade was at least mostly intact. Entertainment as a whole is soulless and always has been, but at least we could delude ourselves otherwise back then. No one's happy to be on a sinking ship, but they'll look back on it fondly when they're drowning in the ocean, y'know?
man...back in the 90s living outside of Buffalo....these guys were THE shit....what an awesome feeling everytime you heard them on the radio...and still to this day
Goo Goo Dolls was my first concert in my entire life. My mother and sister brought me to it when I was 10. I didn't know how awesome what I was seeing was. What I wouldn't give to go back to that concert and rock the fuck out!!!
What's interesting about Johhny is his journey. In this song he alludes to his father's struggle with and death from alcohol, and his fear that his own will take him down the same sad path. A similar message can be heard in the song, "Home" where it seems like Johnny is just tired of fakeness and meaningless conversations and just wants to go "home" - a word he doesn't really define, but we all know what "home" feels like - a place you can be real, be yourself, be safe, and know love. How very poetic that in a still-later song called, "Long way Home" he sings from a much more positive perspective. He has survived his addiction and found new meaning in life. It may not be the popular thing to be, but to be honest, I've been a Christian all my life and appreciated his songs as a teenager back in the day. The pain and honesty in his music are very human and they reflect much of the struggle the Bible says we will go through in life if we live honest with ourselves and struggle to find the meaning in it all. His honesty resonated with me and moved me to pray for him every time I heard his songs - that God would preserve him even through the worst moments, would gradually work the clarity and meaning into his life that he obviously, honestly seeks and which I also sought and struggled to find - still struggle to find at times. God loves Rock stars too and He knows their pain and does not reject them for it. I still pray for this guy and his family often. God bless him for his attempts to be honest with himself and the world.
I grew up by the Broadway they are talking about (Buffalo NY). I lived right by the Fillmore Broadway intersection. Goo Goo Dolls were pretty close from it as well, a street called Sweet (spoilers: it's not sweet at all). My dad knew their manager in passing. The song is an apt description of the drunkards that spend every waking moment in the bars getting trashed.

Honestly a great band a lot better than what’s popular today it’s like soothing and venting at the same time, true art, beautiful relatable expression. I hope I can learn all I can from them, be inspired and take what they’ve taught and spin it in a similar direction but one that perfectly expresses me in my own art. Some of the best things in life aren’t always the most popular including this band, but I’m really a big fan. They’re still pretty popular compared to many others, I just don’t understand why they’re not even more popular. I’d rather listen to this than 90% of the stuff on the radio.
The words remind me so much of my father and brothers born in Slavic Village in Cleveland. Needed an old man's bar in the video-lots of them in Cleveland and Buffalo.
I remember going to the MUSIC STORE in the MALL in my hometown the summer before my sophomore year in high school to buy this CD. 1998. So am I still the young man or the old man in this song? LOL.

You talk about the world like it's some place that you've been! LOVE THE GOO GOO DOLLS! Most Excellent! Favorite song though is Iris even though I could listen to all of their songs over and over.
I remember when this song came out it was mine and my friend Kelly's song. It was the song me and her used to sing everyday. It would come on MTV every morning before we went to school. I love this song. This song is one of the reasons I will ALWAYS be a Goo Goo Dolls fan. It has a special memory for me because of my friend Kelly.
It's good to see another Buffaloanian comment on this video! I grew up in Buffalo around Bailey and moved away years ago, but this song always reminds me of home, even though it's pretty sad.
This was the gem track from Dizzy Up the Girl, well in my opinion anyway. There's so much being said in this song, and the video itself is filled with substance and prolific meaning. Goo Goo Dolls are true artists, 'Name' was proof of that, although 'Iris' and 'Slide' gave 'em a huge break and the recognition they truly deserved. They're simply classic, and quite underrated despite their considerate success. Goo's have always been true to their music, that's what I love most about them.
heard the song for the first time at the end of the tv show Charmed...googled it, youtubed it - it was the band playing on the show (cool)...so I now have another Goo Goo Dolls tune in my iTunes!!
Great song by the best group in music today. Love these guys. Lucky enough to see them live just outsided of Sacramento. "Broadway" is a Fantastic sound of the 90's that could have been written in the 60's or 70's about a returning Viet Nam Veteran. Think about River Phoenix's character in the movie "Dog Fight". That's the film and the time period I think about when I hear "Broadway".

First song my son heard on the day he was born. Had to start him off right 🙌❤❤❤❤
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway is dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
The cowboy kills the rock star
And Friday night's gone too far
The dim light hides the years on all the faded girls
Forgotten but not gone
You drink it off your mind
You talk about the world
Like it's someplace that you've been
You see you'd love to run home
But you know you ain't got one
'Cause you're livin' in a world
That you're best forgotten around here
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway is dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
You choke down all your anger
Forget your only son
You pray to statues when you're sober up for fun
Your anger don't impress me
The world slapped in your face
It always rains like hell on the losers day parade
You see you'd love to run home
But you know you ain't got one
'Cause you're livin' in a world
That you're best forgotten
When you're thinkin' of a joke
And nobody's gonna listen
To the one small point
I know they been missin' round here
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway is dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die
You see you'd love to run home
But you know you ain't got one
'Cause you're livin' in a world
That you're best forgotten
When you're thinkin' of a joke
And nobody's gonna listen
To the one small point
I know they been missin' round here, round here
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway is dark tonight
See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar
Waitin' for his turn to die

Still one of my favorite albums of all time. Love them!
I MISS THE 90'S!
Hello, how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here. Thanks for your love and support❤🤘🏻You have yourself a wonderful day ahead 🌺🌺❤️🤘🏻
this song is a masterpice
This song's been stuck in my head for years
Heybo. Keep on rockin'
It's good to see another Buffaloanian comment on this video! I grew up in Buffalo around Bailey and moved away years ago, but this song always reminds me of home, even though it's pretty sad.
Such a rockstar

彼らのライブでは定番の爽快なロックンロール。PVはなんともユニークで微笑ましい。グー・グー・ドールズ最高です。
Damn, this song still hits the feels after all this time
Epic song! Heard it on the radio after much time passed by since I last heard it and immediately brought back memories. Turn up the volume!
Wow, 21 years ago. I wish I was 21 years younger. I remember those days. Great music and great times
Johnny looks hot 🔥
Always felt like this song should've been a bigger hit. "Broadway is dark tonight." Just such dark tragic lyrics
In my 40’s now I understand, getting old trying to hide it
Just saw them in concert this weekend 4th row. one word: AMAZING

Omg saw this band last night sooo amazing in person worth every penny love it
This was the gem track from Dizzy Up the Girl, well in my opinion anyway.
Nope. Broadway was from the Superstar Carwash album.
Can return to this one anytime cuz GGD so know how to rock it!
heard the song for the first time at the end of the tv show Charmed...googled it, youtubed it - it was the band playing on the show (cool)...so I now have another Goo Goo Dolls tune in my iTunes!!
TEXAS LOVES THE GOO GOO DOLLS!!!!!!
When they closed Broadway for COVID-19 I shed some tears and thought of this song
Hannah Poland same here. Broadway IS dark tonight.
Yes he has the most Epic and best haircut and color. Coming from hairdresser myself.
Someone should really do a vid.
The song is not about Broadway NYC but the Rust Belt cities specifically Buffalo NY
Goo Goo Dolls you were fantastic last night.Davenport Iowa 💖

Great song by the best group in music today. Love these guys. Lucky enough to see them live just outsided of Sacramento. "Broadway" is a Fantastic sound of the 90's that could have been written in the 60's or 70's about a returning Viet Nam Veteran. Think about River Phoenix's character in the movie "Dog Fight". That's the film and the time period I think about when I hear "Broadway".
Life has its way! N music eventually eventually catches up!👍👍😎😎🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
They had so many hits
Love this band & their contribution to the City of Angels movie soundtrack!
