Lyrics:
Baby's black balloon makes her fly
I almost fell into that hole in your life
And you're not thinking about tomorrow
Cause you were the same as me
But on your knees
A thousand other boys could never reach you
How could I have been the one?
I saw the world spin beneath you
And scatter like ice from the spoon that was your womb
Coming down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I go on as you get colder
Or are you someone's prayer?
You know the lies they always told you
And the love you never knew
What's the things they never showed you
That swallow the light from the sun inside your room, yeah
Coming down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I go on as you get colder
Or are you someone's prayer?
And there's no time left for losing
When you stand they fall, yeah
Coming down the world turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I go on as you get colder
All because I'm
Coming down the year's turned over
And angels fall without you there
And I'll go on and I'll lead you home and
All because I'm
All because I'm
And I'll become
What you became to me

90s is a decade smacked in the middle between the old and the new world. It was absolutely beautiful, full of wonder, anticipation and adventure. You get to touch a little bit of everything. You saw the transition and felt the bittersweet emotion that accompanied it. This song always takes me back to one of those sweet moments.
Agree...
+@@ignacia84 Wasn,t sweet in the Balkans. Are you NUTS!
Well said
Beautiful. Something I’ve felt but never put into words before.
Exactly
I remember this song playing in my car as I drove 1500 miles to college. It was 4am and I was the only one on the highway. It was such a beautiful moment.
Thanks for sharing.
The most beautiful moments are the ones we have alone!
Nothing floods the memories like this band. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I bet that was an unparalleled sobering high
( Twist) Did you hit any 🦨. They are up at 4 AM.
I would watch this video over and over when going through withdrawals cold turkey in 2017. This January, I celebrated 5 years clean 😊 there is no such thing as a lost cause
hey random person on the internet, that sounds great. keep going!
Congratulations Jillian Kathleen!!!
Good for you! Keep it up Jillian!
Congratulations that's freaken awesome
Congrats! Keep going strong
Black Balloon is such an underrated song!
Underrated song and underrated band
They should of been a stadium sized band in the 90s early 00s
@@bendover9663 100%. I saw them once in Montreal 8 years ago in a small venue in a shady side of town. :(. Since then they always skipped Montreal
@@shauncougar9752 that's a shame because they had two number ones and two top 5s in Canada didn't they, this song was number 3 on your charts🙆🏻♂️... They should of been equivalent to Bon Jovi of the 90s type thing.... They barely were noticed here in the UK in the 90s, i saw them at a small venue, maybe 1000 people, in Cambridge mid 00s, which was great but it should have been an arena at least 🤷🏻♂️🙆🏻♂️
@@bendover9663 totally agree. I know they toured with jovi in the early 2000. I only got into jovi in 2005. Saw them 23 times but lost interest once Richie left. I met the new guitarist Phil a few times we chilled n Drank together Cool guy good guitarist but he’s no Richie.
I wish I could see the goo 23 times instead.
I’m telling you there’s something about 90’s music that calms the soul.
When actual instruments meant something... It seems to be all synths and computers now. I really like the drums of the 90s so I gravitated to blink 182. Travis Barker is amazing
Yaaas
Certero!!☺️🥰
Gets you amped too
It doesn't calm me. It strikes the chord of nostalgia and regret
I listen to this song every day. Music is not as good as this anymore. This is truly a classic.
It doesn't hit the same anymore. This song sends almost a sound bath to my heart. If that makes sense. This and She Don't Want the World -3 Doors Down
Sure is honey
There are still gems around, they just aren't in the mainstream.
I can’t help but get chills when I hear the opening riff
Same it’s perfection.
On the Goo Goo Dolls' VH1 Storytellers special, frontman Johnny Rzeznik said this ballad was inspired by his friend's heroin addiction and the havoc it wreaked on everyone else.
@@android-ud2nf Years ago, someone had made a perfect loop of it, over and over. Got deleted at some point. Something about that intro triggers all the nostalgia for me.

My brother struggled for 8 years with a heroin addiction. He will be 5 years sober in July. This song used to make me cry with sadness. It still brings tears to my eyes but they are now tears of relief, joy, and pride for my brother overcoming his demons. For anyone out there struggling, recovery is not impossible and it does get better 💙
Glad for the happy ending!
Wow, you guys strong af❤❤❤
Thank you for this it gives me hope that someday my brother will overcome his addiction with meth 😭💔

and don't forget to go and see your fav band LIVE while they are still touring and alive. I saw mine this past summer: Boyz II Men, Armored Saint, REO, Chicago, LIVE, Moist, Bad Wolves, FFDP, Breaking Benjamin, Ozzy and next Angra & the Goo Goo Dolls.
Little did we know the nice sounding songs like these we loved as kids were about things like losing a girl you loved to a heroin addiction. Good thing our parents didn't listen too closely, would have missed out on alot of third eye blind as well.
Yeahhh. The MTV show was the only entertainment that old days.
Nice!!!
I miss the 90's, things were so simple and everyone didn't hate each other because of different political views. No cell phones or social media, just great music and great times with friends.

Me me me
When somebody asks me who my favorite band of all time is, I simply reply..Goo Goo Dolls...Their music is part of my upbringing in the 90's and early 2000's and has gotten me through many many hard times in my life...I love you all!!! You can do anything you set your heart and mind to..Never give up..You are stronger than you could ever imagine...Reach inside and pull that stuff out...The secret has been inside of YOU all along.
Ok, so just for shits & giggles, I'm gonna have y'all read ↑this comment↑ again. But first, close your eyes a sec and imagine that this time as you're reading it, you also happen to be smuggling a balloon full of dope- y'know, like black tar heroin (one could even say it's, oh I dunno, a "Black Balloon," perhaps)-across the border in your.. well.. err.. Inside you. Yeah. Ok, now pop back up and reread OP's comment for me. The last little bits there, in particular. Then meet me back here. Kay? Have fun 👍
Alright, you back? Great! Now, not only are you just that little bit closer to the song, but you're also hopefully laughing, more than a little bit uncomfortable, or all of the above! Isn't the internet fun?
You're welcome.. or I'm sorry. Whichever.
Yes! Goo goo dolls brings back so many memories
Thank you mizzou! Those are enchanting words that make a true difference in this world!!!!
Same here! The Goo Goo dolls will always be my favorite band of all time. Mega fan, ever since Superstar Car Wash. Johnny just knows exactly how to pull right at my heart strings!

I Love 'better days' by Goo goo as well. I was teary eyed when the movie New Years Eve played the song
John Rzeznik was 34, when this song came out in 1999. I'm now, 34, in 2020. It is too emotional looking back the beauty of the 90's. I'm forever be grateful to be alive. Thank you, Goo Goo Dolls.

I spent most of my life dealing with alcohol addiction. When this song came out, it really hit home. I know it's about heroin, but it's still one of those songs that really hit home. I've been sober a few years now. It's never easy, especially with mental health issues. But I'm still alive and kicking.
Love what you wrote and congratulations on your sobriety 👏👏 I didn't know this song was about heroin but addiction and mental health will always be prevalent..this song hits home for sure
Hey, I hope you are doing well, and that you continue your journey of healing and deliverance. Never forget that despite the hard times, we can still see light if we look in the right direction. I wish all the best for you 🙏

Congratulations on your sobriety. I'm coming up on 34 years of sobriety, came from a family of alcoholics. Best regards to you.
Thank you for this. As a recovering heroin addict, this is reality. This is addiction. It’s not glamours or fun.. it’s dark and sad. Thank you!
I hope you strong and well. God bless you
I hope you are doing wonderful, and the chapter has been closed and sealed forever!

Johnny Rzeznik and The Dolls are quintessential 90's rock. Slide, Black Balloon, Iris, Broadway and Name will live on forever and those songs will always be played somewhere on the planet

Amazing how you can hear song and it bring back so many memories. The transcending power of music. I remember not telling some of my friends about the music I like, as a young black male, for fear of them saying "I wanted to be white." Interesting how life turns out.
***** So very true, Mimi. You do the same. I wish you all the blessings life has to offer.
Thanks, Anthony.
im Mexican, i live here in Mexico and i feel so different than the rest of my Mexican people because my music is not "Mexican".
Ricardo Viramontes I know what you mean. It is hard to stand out in a world that is telling you should be like everybody else.
I grew up in the 'HOOD!!' in the '80s and I was the only person in my class that preferred rock and heavy metal to rap and R&B, and all of my friends laughed at and teased me for it (and still do) but I didn't care at all!! I listened to the music I liked without apology to anyone.
Dear God, I offer this prayer for everyone who are suffering from addictions. All form of addiction. I pray you will grant them strength to overcome the mountains of obstacles they face on their journey towards sobriety. I hope you comfort those who lost their loved ones fighting this battle.
Don't let their deaths go to waste. For every one that had fallen may a 1000 more led to freedom.
I pray for the rest of them who needs assurance of their life's journey, guide them through many difficult questions about their place on this earth.

It is about his girlfriend and her heroine addiction.

Chris Yarborough so sorry for your loss
Sorry brotha
The young teens fucking around with Oxycodone and then ending up not aware of the withdrawals and becoming addicted and leading to Heroin has been going on for over 15 years and only getting worse, its insane watching 15-16 year olds loosing their souls and their lives at such a innocent age, sending them on a path of torture and pain and exhaustion until they overdose or hopefully get clean. Its not even remotely being addressed as much as it should be...its beyond a epidemic now.
Most of these kids though are the result of parental neglect or parents whom use drugs and aren't emotionally available. People...if you're an addict...do not have kids until you are absolutely certain you're clean and free and available for life with Children. End the cycle.
I was in active addiction for 25 years been clean 8 and thank god everyday I wake up!

I can't believe it has already been four years since I saw them
Bloomin Daisies
Yes they are!!😀saw them with Tonic when they were supporting the Dizzy up the girl record!!!
I saw them in 98 on the MP3.com tour with Tonic. I saw Tonic again in more recent years and they still killed. Hopefully I get to see GGD this summer
I saw them 4 times in the 90s. 3 of those times with tonic. And once with sugar ray Front row everytime!!!
I'm listening "Iris" for almost 20 years but I never really explored Goo Goo Dolls other songs but last few weeks I randomly started listening to their other songs, and everyday, I am finding hidden gems. This is easily one of my fav. Goo Goo song now! What an underrated band
My best friend died of a drug overdose a couple days ago. Left behind her three young kids. It’s the most painful thing I’ve ever gone through. We used to stay up late and listen to music like this. I was with her a day before the OD happened. I miss her so much. I feel so empty. RIP my beautiful friend of 20 years ❤️ I’ll see you in another dimension…
I won a talent show at my job years ago and performed this song. The prize was a four day cruise. Thanks Goo goo dolls!!!! Ps. I'm a black dude too
3 year later edit: Wow! Wasnt expecting all the likes. Lol! I was just pointing out music with meaning and passion can be identified with all races and types of people. I'll never forget the day I won the cruise though. I actually made a complete track using pro tools with drums, bass, and the strings you hear in the song, and played the track along with me playing acoustic guitar (on my now stolen Oscar Schmidt Washburn acoustic guitar) and singing. This was back in 2009 when I lived in Birmingham. As a black guy, working at a 97 percent white company, I'm sure they weren't expecting me to rip into Goo goo Dolls🤣. But they are an awesome band and I've seen them live! Thanks Johnny, I enjoyed my cruise to Cozumel. But more importantly, thanks for timeless music!
Great Story from a 52 year old white Guy!!!!! Made me smile.......
I dont think your race matters, but yeah its a good song
So, do you have a video of yourself performing this song? I'd love to check it out. If it was good enough to win a cruise, man, I wanna hear & see you do it! Post a video for us!
I like the p.s.
that's amazing. good for you bruh. but just a question... no offense, why didn't you rap?
Goo Goo dolls were everything back in the day. Every time I hear slide, iris, black balloon etc it takes me right back to my teen years in the late 90s to early 2000s ish. I miss it so much. As soon as the song started playing I reimagined myself back in my room ,this song playing on the radio, laying on my bed skimming through ym, teen people and seventeen magazines, phone next to me waiting for a friend to call, TV on low while Dawson creek is playing, wearing Mudd jeans and a Tommy Hilfiger spaghetti strap tank with butterfly clips in my hair....(sigh..my has time flew by)
Wow you just described it perfectly! Exact same for me. Subscription to Seventeen and that phone was always at my side. Late at night I’d have my bf call at an exact time so I could answer it super fast before it even finished the first ring! So my mom wouldn’t wake up and lecture me. Lol 😂 the 90’s were a simpler time. When kids played outside and we rode our bikes everywhere. No social media!! I miss it…
@@KBelle808 that part about answering the phone after the first ring was everything lol I used to do the exact same lol great times
Hello, how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here. Thanks for your love and support❤️🤟🏻you have a wonderful day ahead 🤟🏻🤟🏻❤️🌺🌺🎸
Beautiful song. Certainly one of the best songs of all time. Beautiful melody, incredible instrumental and the perfect interpretation by John Rzeznik. total inspiration
That's because Rzeznik writes all his music..😊
Who's Here In 2021 Still Rocking Out To This Song? 🤩🙌🏽❤
Me regularly .. from France
Me❤
2024 ❤
Heroin is such a bad addiction. This song reminds me of a patient I saw when I was on a fire department. We got the call for an unresponsive person in a car. Got there, saw a person in the car not moving. we had to break the window to get the door open. this person still had the needle in their arm with the spoon next to them. Found out later this person was a single parent with a child in kindergarten at that time. This persons child is around 18 or 19 now in 2018. I always wonder about this persons kid and how it affected them as they grew up not having their parent with them and probably not knowing how their parent died. I'll never forget and this song will always bring me back to that situation.
So sad ... That story ... Unfortunately opiate use is really bad at least in the US not sure about other countries .. I did heroin once damn near almost killed me .. I was stupid I had some addict fix my dose ... And yeah my friend who invited him over .. they woke up and had to slap me in gave to wake up enough to move around cause my heart was slowing down to much ... But yeah never again ... Not worth it ...
That's really sad.
Super sad story; Sorry you had to endure that...! : - (
LifeHouse and the Goo Goo Dolls at Borgata Atlantic City N.J. My late wife and I alone for a rare moment.........................This Song puts me right back in Her Arms.........
Scott DeCesare I'm so sorry
I'm sorry. Amazing how music can be transcendant that way.
Rip hold ur head bro
so sorry scott if i could give you a hug right now in this moment i would scott
Sorry buddy :(
This sound reminds me of when I was 16 years old (33 now) studying for my exams and thinking about my future with endless possibilities. Some of my dreams came through. It makes me feel positive yet emotional. I think of my parents a lot, makes me sad to think of life without them. I am now happily married with a baby boy. This song still does it for me.
Hello, how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here. Thanks for your love and support🤟🏻❤️you have a wonderful day ahead🤟🏻🤟🏻❤️🌺🎸
Tied between this and Here is gone as my favorites. Impossible to pick
Who in the fuck disliked this?! This song is amazing.
its beautiful song isnt it :)
Justin Bieber and John Legends Fans I think
ah maybe they're just wrong click
doesn't matter.
The beginning riff always gets me 😍 so beautiful
Still have this perfecly memorized.
My favourite song of the 90s
Fuck Heroin
Evil drug has destroyed so many lives..
RIP sis
sorry for your loss
My condolences
Tipping Toast Media Yes. It's about a girl with a heroin addiction. His too
I lost a best friend to a car accident and another good friend in the same accident. I was almost going to be in the car with them but changed my mind last second. This song reminds me of her so much. I always wonder if she would have gotten swallowed up by addiction like the rest of our small city did. Our city was and is cursed. I lost 9-10 friends before we were 23 and in a city you could walk across in an hour. I miss her all the time and when I hear this song I always think of her. Heroin was rampant for us back in the 90's and it only got worse. Now it's everywhere but we had it bad long before it got really bad.
I lost a friend to a drug overdose in 2009 changed my life forever seen him the day before he overdosed
It's this kind of music that Gives you hope, that makes your feel that little bit of happy when your soul is sad. (Therapy) Just put your head phones on and go for a walk.
Makes me miss Colorado
Colorado is awesome
Yea there one of my top bands.
Listening to this song while drinking coffee on the way to one of my early morning clinicals was a very euphoric and inspiring experience that I’ll never forget!
By far one of the best guitar harmonic riffs ever made. Also one of the greatest intro guitar riffs ever written.
Just realized this song finishes on that same harmonic riff. Unbelievable. Doesn't get much better than that. This song deserves SO much more than 15 million views. Come on ppl!!!
Such an underrated band! I love the Goo Goo dolls!💖
"You know the lies they always told you
And the love you never knew
What's the things they never showed you
That swallow the light from the sun inside your room, yeah"
My favourite Goo Goo Dolls song.
AWESOME SONG
I never get tired of listening to this work of art. 🇧🇷🙏🏻
I never knew this song was about addiction. Now I'm a month clean and rediscovering it. Pure joy and despair hitting me at once. Kinda like heroin used to.
God bless you. stay strong and surrounded by people who truly love you
One day at a time! One hour, one second! But just dont quit...God Bless You!
This song is just so full of life.
If you didn't grew up in the 70's, 80's or 90's you missed out big time.
I was born in the 2000s (Exactly 2000 to be specific) and here I am, listening to Goo Goo Dolls and other bands from the 90s.
I don't think I've missed out on anything since everything you listened back then is now on the internet.
I just saw them live a week ago. i died
Sandia Barrera
Wish I was you. T_T
They would probably never come to my country since it's a small one.
King Of The Iron Fist Tournament :( I feel your pain my friend.
Missed out on remembering a lot of stuff too - drugs, pre-AIDS and wretched excess. I survived it.
The final lyrics are so painful.. if you’ve ever tried to save a loved one from themselves, you just hope that one day they will look back and understand… what a wonderful, poignant, tragically beautiful song.
This song always reminds me of a girl I liked back in junior high. She loved the Goo Goo Dolls as much as I did and somehow this song in particular brings me back to those days. Just hearing that opening rift and those memories come flooding back. Beautifully written and composed song , never gets old after listening to it a million times.
one of those songs that bring back memories...
I actually prefer Black Balloon over Iris these days lol
Iris is a good song but I don’t like the people that only listen to iris when there’s a bunch of other good songs of theirs
I honestly find this song really deep, like I could not understand the message of it that I need to I look at the comments and says it's abt heroin addiction😅😅 but it's a good listen, I still prefer iris tho because somehow the song's being deep but at the same time still understandable with the lyrics, I could relate and feel the song more while listening to it 😅♥️
same here
Sean swann it’s always been better. Along with Name and Broadway
Iris is the song I like the least
This song and its lyrics are a masterpiece no matter what decade you listen to them in. Doesn't matter how many times you circle back. The Goo Goo Dolls are always there, and still magnificent ❤
One of my all-Time favourite songs in this World. ❤️❤️
That intro is absolutely breathtaking.
Johnny Rzeznick said it’s just 2 chords he played back and forth. It’s so simple but powerful. God, GGD are so underrated.
@@queenemma5823 sounds more like natural harmonics than chords but still beautiful
@@queenemma5823 That’s not what the OP is talking about. He’s talking about the harmonics
I wish they still made music this beautiful
Black Balloon is still an epic song, IMO. Just wonderful and dark.
I remember listening to this in the ‘90s,this was great and so was the ‘90s!
I remember watching this on VH1 as a seven year old child. summer mornings before my mom went to work I would hear the songs that would forever encapsulate my youth.
Yesssss
