- In this episode I turn an old iPhone 4, a GoPro3 Hero+ and a Ricoh Theta S 360 camera into a daily dash cam. We all have that drawer that's filled with tech treasures of yesteryear, why not elevate their job description from paperweight to dash cam? Learn about the benefits of using a smart phone dash cam app to record your daily commute. I'll discuss setting up power, configuring the app, how to keep the sun off your dash cam to prevent overheating and how to use wide angle lens adapters to see more of the road in front of you.

I have been thinking about using a 360 camera but on the roof, would be nice if there were a way to program it to act like a dashcam.
The footage would be amazing, but there’s a lot of issues. Mounting it securely is at the top of the list. You might want to just be comfortable with the idea of losing it at any moment. Once mounted, you’ll be reliant on the battery and you’ll have to keep it charged. Some of the newer 360 cams might have DVR or continuous recording, otherwise you’ll have to manage the video files manually. Not out of the question but it’s risky and a bit of work. Let me know if you give it a shot.
Yeah, exactly, 1 is to getting it to stay there, but I would like to have a quickrelease so no one can grab it during the night. 2 is to get it to power from the car and 3 is to get the dashcam overwrite videofiles feature.
If someone release a 360 you can mod on your own would be good.

Are you referring to the video files the dash an app saves? I believe the videos are viewable in the app and you can choose to save them to your roll (photos).

SIDE VIEW. I want left turn or right to eliminate my Kia blind spot. How would a 360 camera do that?

A 360 camera records in all directions all the time. When you playback the footage you control what you’re “looking at”. If the camera is mounted on the dash, you’re limited to what the camera can see out your windows which is definitely not as good as an external camera, but you’ll see something.

Why is it so hard to find a good dash cam with great night settings :/ I don’t like the poor resolution on them
+Alex Miranda it likely has to do with auto exposure, the camera boosts its sensitivity in an attempt to reach proper exposure, destroying the image with noise in the process. My Ring uses IR leds to get a better image at night, maybe dash cams will follow suit? I think dashcams will be standard issue on future vehicles like GPS is now.
its not hard if youre willing to pay $4-500 for a dash cam.

I was using a smartphone as a dash cam but the only problem is i left the charger connected for long time and the battery was swollen
That and sitting on a hot dash in direct sun probably didn’t help. Definitely going to want to unplug and remove from the dash when not driving. Thanks for the recommendation,
