Watching after 7 years since it has been uploaded. And still it is valid. A great video to understand pros and cons of different phone mount locations. This helped me decide on what to buy.
This is the best way to Remove the magnetic mount and disc: 1.Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to help break the adhesive bond. 2. carefully use a fishing line or dental floss in a sawing motion to cut the foam away. 3. wipe away any adhesive without leaving any marks.
Excellent, to the point, concise. You don't waste time, cover the entire spectrum, deliberate over the pros and cons, and deliver a succinct conclusion. Kudos to you Sir.
I once got a ticket for having my phone mounted in the center of the dash! 1) It was an "add-on" for the cop, since he was giving me a speeding ticket at the time. I doubt I would have gotten one otherwise. 2) The base was mounted to the window, rather than the dash Now I have an iOttie mount, mounted to the dash. I use their intermediate pad. On hot days, while the pad stays, the suction cup tends to peel off from the pad. I have used their standard mount, AND their induction-charging mount. The mechanism works well for both of them, but the induction mount (trying to charge my phone through the OtterBox Defender case) tends to give me an overheat warning on the phone far more often than I actually get a meaningful charge from it. I have no such overheating problem using an inductive fast-charging puck when I'm at home. Thank you, Aaron!
Great video. I’m with you with the drive side mount. Only draw backs are, it’s harder to charge phone on that side. Wires all over steering wheel. The other is the majority of people are right handed, on this side of the Atlantic. It is definitely better for not blocking windshield view. Lastly, move to a place where you don’t have to worry about your car vent overheating your phone.
Love the review and the pros and cons of devices and positions. I often had to drive rapid response vehicles and found the Quad Lock Car Mount in the driver side of the screen to be most secure and unobtrusive; the downside is it means only being able to use it with a Quad Lock phone case but it works well with my iPhone 6S Plus both in landscape and portrait rotation.
mentioned everything that a consumer needs to hear - overheating, cup holders, magnets - there's an angry rant for all of these frustrating issues - but the real info? windshield, driver side. Great video, no notes, got the extendable arm. Thank you for this outstanding video.
Just saw this video and wanted to add that you can take the iOttie mount and remove the mechanical grabber and then take a magnetic mount from another product and attach it to the iOttie mount as they tend to use the same sized ball-mount. This offers the best of both worlds, the superior flexibility and positioning of the iOttie along with the convenience of a magnetic attachment.
Thank you for this detailed review of all the different kind of car phone holders out there, I found that you gave a very detailed and understandable description of each one, however I am still confused as to which one would be best for my car. So unfortunately, I will need to wait even longer before I decide on one.
I have one that clips on the vent. I don't have to worry about overheating from using the heater since the heat is coming from the bottom of the car. I always set it that way because I don't like heat going to my face. During the summer, it will keep my phone cool when using the AC.
I turn my air vents off where my phone is sitting, now I've got a new car need I need a new air vent mount as I like them away from dashboard. 6 months of the yr its hot on the Gold Coast Australia I also very rarely I use heat in my car it's mainly cool my air con is set to. We have very mild winters here. But yeah I would turn off an air vent when set to cool.

Me too. I was also asking him to please pull over I was getting car sick. ... plus I think I know how he got that crack in his windshield: recording himself for his RUclips how-to video while driving in a residential neighborhood where he might come upon a bunch of kids playing street or kickball. Yes driving slow is helpful but so is pulling over because I’m really nauseated now. But thanks for the help.
By far my favorite mount to date was a magnetic mount that clamped into the CD player slot (I think it was an Aduro)! My newer Ford truck doesn’t have a CD player at all so now I’m looking for other options.... I think the WeatherTech CupPhone would probably work perfectly since my truck has 4 cupholders but I’m not paying $45!
I have two mounts on my car. I drive for Lyft and Uber. One mount I have it connected via cd since I do not have any cds and the second is on my at the center just below my rear view mirror. You may have helped me with overcoming an issue I was dealing with. Which is going wireless.
I thoroughly enjoyed your no nonsense review of cellphone car mounts. You were informative and to the point. You expressed your likes and dislikes. And you had several different types and showed how each was affixed to car interior. I wish all reviews were like this. Great job.👍 I stuck around for the awkward pause at the ending. I was hoping to hear the chorus of '🎵Beer Time'🎶......lmao
I made my own mount based on the ProClip for my car. Use Velcro as the "holder/cradle". Custom made the mount to be at correct angle and height for me. Top of phone is at line of sight to base of windshield so it is easy to see without blocking the view. Angle is toward driver and up toward roof enough to not get rear window glare. Closest thing to it in the video, location wise, would be vent clip mount. But a little higher.
Like you, I've tried all sorts of holders and by far the best is 'Brodit' They're expensive but they're made for your particular car and they're trouble free.
The Spigen A201 is a very effective and strong magnetic vent mount with swivel. Will hold a 7plus with the heaviest case you can find. Only $12.99 with 2 magnets on Amazon
I started delivering for UBER Eats recently - long enough to realize I'm going to need a dash mount for my cell phone. So, I've been online checking out what's out there for the past half hour and I can't believe how many different kinds there are, and the prices are all over the place. I just happened upon this video and wanted to say thanks for being so thorough with your research - the information you provided was very complete. The pros and cons you shared were especially helpful for me, as was your insight about each of the mounts you discussed. This is going to be the most informed decision/purchase I've made in a long time. Thanks again.
A good review. There a few unclear points: 1. how do you get power cord to the (1) position? 2. how strong are the vent mounts? I had one and it did not hold even itself. 3. cd mounts tend to get in the way of the radio/multimedia/climate knobs, and if you need to use the phone you really have to take your eyes off the road. what is your opinion of that?
1. A long cable from adapter. I forgot to mention in the video that I don't mount my devices for long periods of time. Even if I am navigating, the screen is usually blacked off since I have an apple watch. 2. The Vent mounts will different based on the magnet. Neodynaim ones are the strongest? 3. That's dependant on the console design and the depth of the mount.
Bought the x-grip through your link. Bruh, seriously one of the best reviews. Quick, answered all my basic questions, good presentation. Again, big thank you for the useful info and not taking up too much time.
I like the vent mount best. It's easy to mount and to put away quickly. However, I have had my iPhone shut down both from the vent's heat and the A/C. I'm going to try using only the floor vents as suggested by another comment. I do like the A/C blowing right on me in the 90+ degree weather.
Just a warning, mounting it on the driver side puts it in the way of the side impact air bags - so you may launch your phone + mount pieces around the cabin if your airbag goes off.
maaat mounted on drivers side I don't think it would launch at you as the side airbag curtain comes down, with any mount in an accident it could hit you
First time watcher. Good visual presentation and your voice is easy to listen to. Some people lose their train of thought and then we hear ums, ers, uhs, etc. but not you. Thumbs up and I’ve subscribed.
I was just thinking the same thing as I am a lefty, too. I don't like the magnetic ones. I don't think that you can use that with a charging pad. Which means, that you have to remove the case every time to charge it. I will find a solution.

Holy balls!! Thank you so much for these tips! It helps a ton getting tips from actual usage versus (like what you said) taking them out of the box & saying they look pretty. I always watch a ton of reviews on products before I buy them & I can go on and on about how helpful this video was compared to regular review videos but I wont. You definitely got a new subscriber.
Thanks for the well thought out, yet succinct reviews of several types of car mounts. The state of Georgia is tightening distracted driving laws and I'm on the market for something new.
I bought a magnetic air vent mount from Best buy. Its made by Kenu. Its relatively small, can be removed anytime and it doesn’t affect the heat or A/C. I have an iPhone 8 with the Otterbox defender case works great
Shouldn't you take into account Airbags? My car has 7 airbags and as such wouldn't placing a smartphone in a mount between you and the airbag be dangerous?
@Brandon Lewis Woodard No consumer is personally equipped to repeatedly crash cars to find the most safe location for a car mount. It is, however, possible that the US NTSB has encountered this situation often enough to have data ready for analysis. Whether or not someone has done that yet is another story.
Don't forget about generally having a lump of metal and glass flying around your car if/when you have an accident. We've completely disregarded all magnetic holders for that reason, and we don't even like the idea of having a suction or vent mount for the same reason. The only ones we've found that have a more built-in feel are Brodit mounts. Designed for specific positions in each model of car so that they're securely mounted.
@True Crime Troy steering wheel, passenger dash, 2 front pillars, 2 curtains, both front seats, and probably something for the rear, so probably more than 7 in modern cars.
Would that really be a concern here? Even if mounted on the driver's side, it can still sit pretty far forward toward the dash such that your head would still either hit the curtain or steering wheel airbags before coming in contact with the phone
Wow! This guy has found his calling! It's surely a testament to how early we are in the life of the smart phone in that practically no automaker addresses this issue directly. Aftermarket solutions are really the only game in town.
One thing about using the vents beside just blocking the vent. Those plastic ribs where you slide your phone holder between the ribs. Those ribs can get damaged or actually broken. Especially if you’re vehicle is older? I’ve had my vents broken a time or two so I don’t use my vents anymore!
Be mindful of insurance not paying out when you collide with someone and they note that you have an obstruction in your window or on your dash, same with the cops if they pull you over.

Thanks to you for getting straight to the point on a wide variety of electronic car mount devices. You're on the right track, especially for Uber/Lyft drivers who are looking for ways to perfect their driving accessories.
I like the magnetic mounts. Just like you mentioned I have to put the metal plate inside my Otterbox case. But it’s not too bad. I think it’s become a habit now that when I get into the car I just put my phone on the holder. That way it’s up and out the way and I know where it is.
Agree with all comments below. This is a really helpful guide to buying mounts. I've been lost for 2 hours trying to decide...all good now. Thank you. Enjoy your beer!
I use two ram-mount suction cups, two short ram-mount arms, one ram-mount T with three ball ends and one longer Ram-Mount arm connected to the X mount. It sits directly below my rear view mirror. The suction mounts are hidden behind the mirror. I use an app on my phone and utilize my phone as a dash cam.
PEOPLE! Consider road safety before anything else. Do not mount ANYTHING where it will block even a tiny part of your forwards vision. You could end up killing a pedestrian or cyclist/motorcyclist. COME ON CAR MANUFACTURERS!!!!!!!!! The biggest fault here is that car designers are not including phone holder locations into their interiors. If one or two special areas were built in, like the driver's door pillar and the center dash near the steering wheel, everyone would be happy and safe. ROFL! My 19 year old Peogeot 306 HAS NO CUP HOLDER!!! Stone age motoring! And My phone's magnetic compass app was disturbed by just a can of beans!!!!! :¬D
Its kind of a wash. Because the further you take your cell phone from your forward vision the further you have to take your eyes from the road to see the phone.
Just discovered your channel. Did I subscribe because of the thorough, clear presentation of the topic? NO! I subscribed because I love your sense of humor. (45 months of the year, etc) Thanks for doing these reviews. ....Singing... not so much. 😬
I use one with the sticky suction cup on windshield. It also has a long stem and a base to rest on dashboard. It has never fallen off the window, however the sticky base has left a sticky mess on the window that needs to be cleaned off.
I mount mine on my visor, held in place with two strong hair elastics. And then film with a fisheye or wide angle lens attachment so that I don't look like my forehead is touching the lens lol. Gerry-rigged af but works well and holds steady. Also ensures phone is mounted high enough to film me at a flattering angle! Lol!

Try driving on a dimly lit, curving road with elevation changes where headlights from oncoming traffic can be sudden & blinding. It's very difficult to adjust your eyes to changing contrast and you would not want to have anything on your line of vision aka the windshield. I threw away my iottie after I had to drive through a road like this on the outskirts of LA. Excellent review apart from that. Thanks

The one he was using initially when he introduced the drive side window category, it was the Magic Mount. I just picked one up, comes with 2 magnets that stick on to your device (and like he mentioned in the video is SUPER sticky). Comes with a small patch for smaller devices and a big patch for bigger devices. I have the small one on my Nexus 6p phone underneath the case, and the bigger patch on the bare plastic back of my LG G Pad III 8" tablet which is much heavier bit still works perfect. I'm a delivery driver so I drive jerky and aggressive when it's busy like today, and the tablet didn't fall off once.
I don’t like the vent mount. Here in the south (US) the a/c makes the phone terribly cold and slows it down. And it can make it sweat when it goes to the warm air. Thanks for the solutions. Great vid
I have a fix for the vent mount from the .99cent store. If your vent mount won't stay in the vent anymore, try using a "nerf dart bullet" cut to fit over the old claws.

*I found Vent mounts break the vents. Any on dash clamp kind don't hold after being in the heat. I want something for filming on road trips showing the views. What ones do you suggest for that? I want it to be able to turn it around for filming inside the car too. 😊😊😊* Sharon in SC
My favourite place to mount is near the driver's left side, either on the windshield or the side window. Doesn't interfere with vents, doesn't obstruct the view if you place it right and it's easily accessible.

This helped me decide on what to buy.
This is the best way to Remove the magnetic mount and disc:

2. carefully use a fishing line or dental floss in a sawing motion to cut the foam away.
3. wipe away any adhesive without leaving any marks.

6:11 - I initially heard "I live in a place where snow and cold weather exist 45 months out of the year" and I thought he must be near me in Winnipeg.
Lol
I thought I heard him say 45 months too and I don't know where the heck he lives to get 45 months in one year. Maybe Jupiter?😄
'4 to 5 months' vs '45 months' 😂

Just saw this video and wanted to add that you can take the iOttie mount and remove the mechanical grabber and then take a magnetic mount from another product and attach it to the iOttie mount as they tend to use the same sized ball-mount. There's no going back from magnetic mounts. With metal sheets integrated in the phone case the whole mounting thing is an absolute delight.
read up on why high powered magnets are bad for sensitive electronics ;-)
sulken2000 I love it when people post stuff like this but provide nothing for the reader to read up on.
PeacefulKancer maybe because it's kind of common knowledge that magnets have an effect on electronics....
Here's a better alternative. Phones never fall and no magnets to interfere with your phone. igg.me/at/Clipster or www.BossMobileUS.com
sulken2000 that's a load of shit, it takes an extremely strong magnet to even begin to interfere with electronics, do some real research.

What you mean "both front seats"? They gunna ejecto-seato you. Lmao
Great reviews, thanks. Viewers: you have to watch all the way to the end to get a full sense of this man's extraordinary talent.
Great video and awesome review best of luck for next video.

Use your phone as a dash cam so you can prove the obstruction wouldn't have made a difference ;)
What! What!! 😭
suMnailimixaM Smart
And driving while not concentrating - and driving with no hands on the wheel!
I APPRECIATE the time & energy you put into this!
I wish I could use my vents for mounting my phone but my vents are weak and bend down to easily when I use one :(
Thanks to you for getting straight to the point on a wide variety of electronic car mount devices. You're on the right track, especially for Uber/Lyft drivers who are looking for ways to perfect their driving accessories.
"Beer time, it's time for beer time. I'm going home and drinking beer!"
Cool and useful!
I like the magnetic mounts. Just like you mentioned I have to put the metal plate inside my Otterbox case. But it’s not too bad. I think it’s become a habit now that when I get into the car I just put my phone on the holder. That way it’s up and out the way and I know where it is.
Thumbs up for driving a manual 👍🏻
good video... should have included that the metal that magnetic holders place on the phone/case interferes with Qi charging..
Bro, I live in Vegas where the summer is BRUTAL. What car mount would you suggest?
I couldn't imagine the heat in Vegas. I like the magnetic ones...Scorse I think on amazon.
Agree with all comments below. This is a really helpful guide to buying mounts. I've been lost for 2 hours trying to decide...all good now. Thank you. Enjoy your beer!
Really helpful review. Keep on going !
Hi, nice video. Did you list or mention the mount you have on the drivers side? It's visible in the video before you show the ram mount. Thanks!
How do you handle charging your phone while it's mounted near the driver side window?
Skrugglez lol you right
Good question. I don't.
Skrugglez hi please subscribe to my channel thanks just starting my channel thanks
External power storage battery in left door pocket holder with USB cable to the phone
I just move my cable under the wheel
Just discovered your channel. Did I subscribe because of the thorough, clear presentation of the topic? NO! I subscribed because I love your sense of humor. (45 months of the year, etc) Thanks for doing these reviews. ....Singing... not so much. 😬
Dude, really helpful vid, been looking into a really good phone mount for my ride, thanks a bunch.👍👍👍
:)
I kept watching after he was done talking as the camera kept rolling expecting something funny at the end of the recording. And he delivered😂😂
Mess with your compass AND wireless charging.
Thanks for the review.. for your heat vents if you can run your heat at your feet only (if an option) I was told this is best since heat rises.
Just like a Marvel flick, I knew it was worth waiting till the very end lol 😅
Thanks for the video. Any mount which reduces your vision through the windshield is dangerous in my opinion.
0:30 - can you plz uber some ppl with this setup and film reactions. :)
I use one with the sticky suction cup on windshield. It also has a long stem and a base to rest on dashboard. It has never fallen off the window, however the sticky base has left a sticky mess on the window that needs to be cleaned off.
9:14, I was waiting for Cop siren and PULL OVER!! Slowlyyy
NICE VIDEO. I WONDER IS THE MAGNET STRONG ENOUGH FOR WIDE SCREEN SMART PHONES WITH PROTECTIVE CASE? OR THE PHONE WILL FALL OFF SOMETIMES?

Thanks
Brilliant and practical review!!! THANK YOU.
In a sunnyday, the adhesive will come off, i love to stick it on the windshield driver side, but that's a problem😢
*Comes in for phone mount reviews/ideas.
*Leaves with a beer craving.
THANKS! lol
Your video is awesome thanks alot you told as about the compass and magnetic, so it affect Google maps directions?
so if im using navigation on the phone the magnetic one will lead me to the wrong direction ? or its just the compass??
nope, mine works fine, vent magnet.
The guy knows what he's talking about. Wonder what kind
of beer he likes, he was really looking forward to one.
Take a Vizy holder
The iottie mount can be mounted on the dash and possitioned right where the vents are if you reverse the mount and extend the arm.
Whats the one you use while driving and making this video?

This video just popped up on my feed.... Great video, well done and one that's stood the test of time.
What was the mount you used for the driver side window?
Madhuri Raghuveera i also want t know
The one he was using initially when he introduced the drive side window category, it was the Magic Mount.

If you like to wirelessly charge your phone get a vent mount holster style holder. I find the vents to be the perfect placement.
Excellent video, just an advice, be careful with this video, someone can accuse you more than 35 years later for drinking beers😉
I don’t like the vent mount. Here in the south (US) the a/c makes the phone terribly cold and slows it down. And it can make it sweat when it goes to the warm air. Thanks for the solutions. Great vid
i guess that there is some kind of serious scientific data search for this .. ( to prevent accidents for mobile distracts )
I have a fix for the vent mount from the .99cent store. If your vent mount won't stay in the vent anymore, try using a "nerf dart bullet" cut to fit over the old claws.
Dude. Watch the freaking road.
@Brigette 5280 He was looking away from the road into the camera a lot of the time. Other than that it was great.
Great review! What a would be good if you have a different phone holder, the holders like a book cover, which holder would be good for those iPhones?

It was so GOOD!

*I found Vent mounts break the vents. Any on dash clamp kind don't hold after being in the heat. I want something for filming on road trips showing the views. What ones do you suggest for that? I want it to be able to turn it around for filming inside the car too. 😊😊😊* Sharon in SC
3:18 - "...it's out of the way"
Obscuring about 30% of the windshield.
My favourite place to mount is near the driver's left side, either on the windshield or the side window. Doesn't interfere with vents, doesn't obstruct the view if you place it right and it's easily accessible.
So much distracted driving in this video.
and add to that an *ASIAN* driving the car.....😁
Nice review - bottom line is that there is no good place to mount - only a less bad place! Good video. Well done! 😀👍
yikes! can you see anything while driving? 7:36 looks like a Military command center with all the screens
Mounting below the rear view mirror like that blocks road view.. The AC vent areas and left side of steering wheel are the best places..
