I'm honestly surprised and kind of annoyed that here we are almost in 2023, and modern cars don't have this kind of stuff figured out and built into cars. I don't understand why we still have to fiddle with third party mounts and relying on suction cups and adhesives etc. Why haven't car companies really got with the times and either built in phone holders like cup holders and/or a standardized phone holder mount like we have for TVs and PC monitors, so that we have spots made to hard mount a phone holder to like a mic stand etc? Built in phone holders or mounting "brackets" should be a standard in modern cars at this point. We shouldn't have to be clipping our phone onto flimsy vents that weren't made for that, and worrying if it's going to put your phone in a bad spot that covers your screen or something.

omg FINALLY someone else feels like I do! I've been asking this exact thing for a few years now, and I can't believe more people aren't bitching about it!! It's insane that a mount isn't built in on every new car!!!! I mean I have a built in compartment for my sunglasses, change compartment, cup holder, built in garage door opener etc plus almost all newer cars have curved and very textured dashes, and my vents are the circular type so none of the vent clips work. most cars don't have CD players anymore so that holder is out. I can't stand the window mount, they give out so fast and my phone hit the gear shift and cracked. I hope someday!!!!

Idk I think the whole point of a car phone holder is for people to put navigation and stuff on older cars that don't have apple carplay built in. Almost every new car comes with applecarplay or you can get it added if you care so much. Otherwise it shouldn't be a problem where you put your phone in the car because you SHOULDN'T BE LOOKING AT IT.

FYI for the vent mounts, some cars (especially older ones) have vents where the entire vent moves (instead of the vanes/fins) which will cause the phone to droop. Some of the vent mounts will have little support legs that mitigates the problem.

It was fine while I was driving slowly and straight, but if I took a turn or even a curve at average speed, that sucker was flying out. Then I had to either fish for my phone in the floor while driving or pull over, get out and find it. Total pain in the ass. Would not recommend.

Yes! I have a newer Toyota Corolla and when I bought a vent mount, the mount droops down. Also, my wife likes to have the heater on in the winter, and when using a vent mount, the phone got really hot and she even got a overheat message on the phone. Something to keep in mind.

Over the years and after trying various brands of mounts, I had settled on the Iottie for ease of use on my and my wife’s cars. The drawback to the Iottie is that the strong snap action when it grips the phone wears the mechanism down and they break in about a year. Two years ago, after the second Iottie breakdown, I went with “ProClip” mounts. They are more expensive but they are well worth the price. The mounts are designed for each specific vehicle application and they are rock solid. I have Proclips in my wife’s Lexus Es 350 and my Honda Accord and they are as firmly attached to the dashes as when I first installed them.

For the dashboard mounts, instructions should say to not mount the actual holder to the pad for at least 24 hours. When you put the pad on the dashboard, aside from whipping it with rubbing alcohol prior to adding the phone holder, it's usually recommended to hold down the pad on the dashboard firmly for at least a minute so it's able to adhere to the texture service correctly

  • @hipoint4599
    @hipoint4599 Год назад +21

You may find if you bypass that mounting pad and do a direct suction to dash, over time some of those suction cups will adhere to your dash and shred it up if you then try to remove it. It's the reason they started including those dash mounting disks.

I don’t like Canada because of all their uptight rules. Any criminal past even 30 years ago prohibits you from entering BUT if you pay them a REHABILITATION fee they’ll make a consideration and dub you rehabilitated to let you in. I actually have two in each car: one for front passenger...which I often also use for hanging a garbage bag onto lol.

Your review is especially informative and thorough. My concern is being able to access the side buttons of the phone, and to be able to rotate for a larger screen when navigating. Some of those actually work only one way, and the clamshell you reviewed in another episode failed miserably because there is no access at all. Others failed because the brackets covered the side buttons completely.
Going for the rotatable vent mount with the least amount of plastic. A winner in my book! Thanks for saving me a ton of frustration, money, and time.

The phone "mount" I normally use is magnetic - easy on, easy off - the only caveat is the fact I had to superglue the base to the dash and is VERY sturdy. I also superglued the metal plate the magnet needs to grab on to the phone case and it holds up pretty well. Regardless of whatever phone I use, that mount is a permanent fixture and has been reliable for years! I also have iottie-type, but it's mostly used on rental cars when I have to rent a vehicle where a permanent phone mount is a no-no - I simply substituted the "grabbers" with a magnetic head.

I have mine on the lip of the navigation console and it simple, not bulky and works awesome. I drive with Lyft and always moving and touching my phone. Spinning it landscape and back to horizontal along with removing the phone and putting back on the magnet mount constantly. Holds up great in both summer and winter and I live and drive in Chicago.

I have the iOttie phone holder. My hubby got it to replace my older model iOttie that finally went kaput. That one lasted a good 5 years, I think? So far, this newer model is great! I have a very different dash than your car and have a very specific spot for mine on the dash. I just keep it there all the time. It's a little tricky with my phone because I use a pop socket, but it will fit in there... jut barely. The only problem I've ever had is every now and then when it gets really hot here it will loosen the whole thing and it falls. So maybe Las Vegas might be bad for it! 😄 However, I think it's the combo of the heat and humidity here in OH that does it, because it only happens on those really stinky hot, humid days where we get close to 3 digits. And I do mount mine directly to the dash and that's the only issue I've come across. What seems to solve it is rinsing the sticky suction cup and remounting it.

    Thank you for the video!
I’m very particular about phone mounts b/c I need to safely use my phone a lot for navigation, music, etc…
That said, I wanted to submit the biggest issue I had for 2 of the types of mounts you reviewed.
Vent Mount: If you can’t close off the air flow to the vent while using the mount, I would NOT use them. Phones don’t work too well & the batteries can get damaged when they get too 🔥hot🔥 or too ❄️cold❄️. Having hot or cold air directly blasting on them for long periods of time from an air vent can drastically effect the life of your phone.
Suction Cup: The addition of a sticky gel like layer to the suction cup is a significant improvement for maintaining a solid air tight seal over time + in some cases will allow it to work on a surface that isn’t completely smooth or flat. But over time, I’ve had the same issue happen w/ multiple brands…. Idk if it’s b/c of the heat from being on the dash, the long term effects of UV rays, or a combo of both, but first the once clear suction cup of the iOttie & other brands turned yellow after 2-3 months & the gel layer seemed to degrade. Even while using the round plate that comes with it, I’d reattach a freshly cleaned suction cup, get a good solid hold, come back after being parked for a few hours & find that it fell off again. Didn’t matter if it was a hot summer day or a cold winter night, same result.
Bottom Line: I do like the suction cup mounts best, but they need to be redesigned, so either the suction cups can easily be replaced once they start to fail or the manufacturer needs to formulate a new plastic/gel that can withstand UV rays, hot/cold temps, etc. & hold up better over time.

Thank you for this video. I have bought 2 or 3 cellphone holders over the years not happy with any of them. Most were the ones that clipped into the vent, but for the ones I bought you had to use both hands not only to get the phone set into place but also to pull it out resulting in the whole gadget coming apart.
I liked the one that locked onto the windshield as it seem to stay there for the whole trip.

I have the iOttie rechargeable suction mount. I have been using it for 2 years now and have had no issues with the mount itself. Depending on the phone case I use does effect the charging capabilities, but usually just have to push the phone in snug and it works. I've tried vent and magnets and have always had issues with the phones staying in them.

I'm a truck driver. I've used many phone holders over the years. Anything that ratchets to clamp your phone will eventually come apart and become useless. Anything with a suction cup will come off when you least expect it. The best one I've found so far is the tough tested windshield mount phone holder. The suction lasts the longest, and it hasn't become useless up until I got the quad lock. The tough tested won't fit every phone with a case. Quad lock is probably the best because it uses the phone case you get from them to hold the phone. Not to mention having wireless charging as an option.

I've been using an iOttie for a couple years now. My dash has flat spots, so the dash mount works for me. Did you know that the pegs under the phone move to adjust to the size of your phone (or where your buttons are)? A useful feature, especially when you switch phones.
Also, I have small hands, and I don't have any issues grabbing my phone (Pixel 6 pro) while squeezing the clips open. I actually like that I have to have my hand in front of the phone to remove it. Less chance of dropping it.

Any of the windshield/dash mount are probably not going to work for you. Not because it will not function but because the sun will heat the phone to the point it shuts down. I have huge issues with any phone holder that blocks the field of view. As you said I had issues with the phone shaking while driving. I ended up with the cup phone by weathertech. With the updates to my car system once your phone connects to your (my) car, I use Waze pretty exclusively. It actually shows on my nav screen using CarPlay so I do not need to see the map on the phone. I have never found a vent mount that will work for me. Same reason as the windshield mount in hot areas. Heat blowing on the phone is counterproductive to the longevity of any phone battery. I have ended up trashing or rehoming 5-10 phone holders. I have had the cup phone for two years with zero problems with it.

If you live in an area with cold winters, a vent mount is NOT a good idea. You run your heater to warm up the interior, and in a few minutes your phone will display a warning message "Your phone is overheated and will shut down in 30 seconds." You now have a choice, turn off your heater and freeze, or remove the phone from the mount. Wisconsin, January, 5 degrees below zero. I tossed my vent mount into the nearest trash can and bought a mount that inserts into my CD slot. Problem solved.
