with the leon fr, you showed the facelift only which generally run for at least a thousand more than the pre-facelifts, with the cheapest pd170s going for as low as 1500 quid. The pre-facelifts have pretty dated interiors and have the older pd170 engines as opposed to the facelift's cr170, the pd170 is basically identical in terms of quarter mile times and whatnot but the fun in it comes from the power delivery; the cr gives you a nice smooth power curve that pulls well throughout the rev range, whereas the pd gives you a proper shove up the backside from 2.1krpm up to around 3.5k rpm. A remap on both cr and pd engines will give you 205-220hp depending on the health of your engine and who's tuning it. Also the facelift models don't look nearly as aggressive as the pre-facelifts.

I don't know if you want to add a message about ULEZ compliance to this video, or do a separate Public Service Announcement, but it's something that should be considered by urban and suburban car buyers and owners
Great video. I have a 2008 Audi A3 2.0l Tdi, but the FWD 138BHP model. I've just hit 200000 miles and it's been an absolute beast. Although not the same car as the one you mentioned, I'd have to say that this is the most reliable car that I've ever owned, bar a couple of surprise problems like the condenser and master clutch cylinder. Good occasional laugh with the 300NM of torque and a great motorway eater, I've consistently returned 50-55mpg.
I didn't see my daily drive on this which surprised me but i guess a lot of people aren't that aware of it. Mazda 3 2.2Sport 180bhp and 50mpg. Not to mention they're fully loaded with tech like a boss sound system.
My personal definition of a hot hatch: a small, fun car that you can thrash the heck out of all the time. Should be just fast enough to irritate anyone in a 320d, but slow enough to be scary under the speed limit. Thrashing diesel is a bit pointless though, so petrol wins on that count, but I reckon these cars vaguely fit the brief. Their issue is that a Fiesta ST or 208 GTi is more fun and just as economical for the same money. These are certainly more like hot hatches than a current Type R or any of the 300hp+ AWD German nonsense.
True but, you don't NEED to thrash a diesel. You get all your torque and accel from cruise, therefore when you're trapping on it'll do far better economy than a petrol spinning at 5k+, and having driven a couple quick diesels and also a couple hot hatches, sure spinning the engine over past 5k gives you a buzz you don't get in a diesel, you get the same end result, to go fast, and it's still fun, but also easy on the wallet, it's affordable fun, each hoon session won't cost as much fuel as a petrol
@@kjp-sy8uf All comes down to the driver, if you drive hard fast all day long then the diesel is suited for someone like that, but if you like to drive fast only for a short while then petrol will always be better, the sound, handling, speed.
@@kjp-sy8uf Not needing to thrash is kind of my point since that's the fun part! I reckon in the real world a Fiesta ST or 208 GTi is just as economical (and therefore significantly better for the environment) compared to these cars too. A Swift Sport is slower but awesome fun and also super economical. At least I hope so- my 3.4 NA petrol gets me 47mpg+ on a run if driven gently so I'd like to think a 1.6 petrol would certainly be close enough to a diesel that it basically becomes too small a factor to care about. Nothing against the hot diesels, I genuinely like most of the cars on this list. I just personally find that the fun per cost ratio can't beat a small thrashy petrol.

Where's the Alfa Giulietta - 2.0 JTD - by far better looking than some on your list - 55mpg - 190bhp is also pretty nippy and you can get a 2012 one with 60k miles for around 4k
One comment I have for these videos is that you show facelift and pre facelift models in the videos which is missleading. For example the leon and the a3, they both had 2l TDIs with 170 but one with a common rail and the other a PD some also had DPFs on the PD engine which are the most problematic ones. In the videos you show both facelift and prefacelift and even higher spec such as FR+ on the leon and black edition on the audi which for £5000 you'd be lucky.
Oh the Fabia VRs mk1. Loved mine, but every 1.9 TDi engine that I've had has gone pop. (Had the same engine in a Seat Toledo and a VW Golf) This was no exception, those turbos have the durability of mild cheddar. It was the worst money pit.

Agree with everything on the list apart from the NO.1 of the BMW 1 Series. No....Just no. I had one and it was one of my worst buys. If I had to pick then probably the Volvo.
The 123d is THE diesel hot hatch - but it's a tad too complicated and the cheap buying price belies the high maintenance costs as the miles pile-up...it's not as reliable as the Fabia or Leon either... DMF's go regularly, timing chains wear excessively (as with all N47's) and crank pulleys wear alot too - and to add insult to injury both are placed at the gearbox end - forcing you to drop the engine out to do any of those 2 jobs. And let's not forget the swirl flap nightmare started with the M47 which BMW frustratingly did not do away with on the N47... And how about re-conditioning TWO different-size turbos rather than one? One costly job - removing, re-conditioning and re-fitting both can cost easily over a grand...

C30 D3 D4 D5 is is easily the best car on this list! By far the best all rounder and I used to get 53mpg (d5)
I got 40 in mine!!!!
Where's the Alfa Giulietta - 2.0 JTD - by far better looking than some on your list - 55mpg - 190bhp is also pretty nippy and you can get a 2012 one with 60k miles for around 4k
Surprised you didn't list the VW Scirocco 170, you can get a decent specced one for about 5 grand and they give good fuel econ.
Toyota Auris 2.2 D-Cat is another suggestion
One comment I have for these videos is that you show facelift and pre facelift models in the videos which is missleading. For example the leon and the a3, they both had 2l TDIs with 170 but one with a common rail and the other a PD some also had DPFs on the PD engine which are the most problematic ones. In the videos you show both facelift and prefacelift and even higher spec such as FR+ on the leon and black edition on the audi which for £5000 you'd be lucky.
Great
New idea! List of cheap ish cars with an LSD or LSD option from factory? NO ONE HAS DONE THAT AND WOULD LOVE TO SEE A LIST
Oh the Fabia VRs mk1. Loved mine, but every 1.9 TDi engine that I've had has gone pop. (Had the same engine in a Seat Toledo and a VW Golf) This was no exception, those turbos have the durability of mild cheddar. It was the worst money pit.
170BHP Scirocco not getting any love
Also a good shout!
@@CarsWithJB honestly mate, I can get 60 mpg when taking it easy but if I need to put the foot down it's got plenty of power. A lot of people overlook them but deffo worth a closer look. Especially because they are lower insurance group than mk6 golf GTD but have the same 170bhp engine. Good work
I love the look of the c30 and you can find it for £1,500
You mention the bmw for being number 1 but other videos ive watch in comparision the mazda 3 2014 2.2ltr hatchback seems to be alot better. All i know of it at the minute is the time chain being expensice but could you do a review on this mazda as for it being higher rated on lots of lists its never ever looked at or giving a chamce. Thanx , btw love the videos helped alot and mainly just wantng you to look into this car and help with more info.
Great vid, i love my 2012 Seat Leon FR, great fuel economy with remap.
Running at 220bhp 466nm
Black and tan leather interior
Just need a 2nd hand armrest to customise to match my interior.
Coilovers next on the list to lower it.
Do you still have it today?
@@ayy1ne376 yeah
@@dillon84 looking to sell? 👀
@@ayy1ne376 nah sorry mate, I love my car, done a bit to it, had wheels power coated black, de chromed it. Got me armrest, remap, pedal tune, michelin ps 4 tyres on all corners, customised black n tan leather car mats and have more plans for it. 110k
currently runs sweet. It would cost u to buy it put it that way lol
@@dillon84 haha understood mate! I’m in the market for one to do exactly what you’ve done - to make it mine and make it sweet! I’m in the market for a DSG however, so just waiting for a good example to come up lol
Diesel gang wya
The disel ban will never happen... So get yourself a disel before they stop making these cars... Thanks JB.. Magic video...
Be brave get a disel and there is much more play than you think...
Haha or at least enjoy the cars while you can!
Sadly the ULEZ charge is very likely coming. Sadly in October it will be coming closer to where I live. My workplace is just within the extended zone so will be worried if I get a letter about my car going in the zone after October
Agree with everything on the list apart from the NO.1 of the BMW 1 Series. No....Just no. I had one and it was one of my worst buys. If I had to pick then probably the Volvo.
My 3 litre diesel 5 series often exceeds 55mpg.
Mini SD? Got one. Pretty fun. Don’t know if it’s under 5 grand yet.
That’s a great shout - very decent!
@@CarsWithJB time to do another video haha
You forgot about the Audi A1 2.0L 143PS diesel which my parents had for just over 7 years before selling. It easily got over 55MPG had £20 VED and was 8 seconds to 60MPH.
I’m suprised never mentioned the mondeo st 2.2
Yes 👍
🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Whaddya think of the 2017 Golf 7 GTD?
I like GTDs, I just wouldn’t ever have one over a GTI!
I love deseil
Great video, thank you for this! I wouldn't buy any of these as all will have been thrashed to an inch if their lives.
I want a sokdia or Volvo or Saab or Fiat one day looking for fiat 500 for first car
Love ya videos.
What’s a good car to get? I’ve had a corsa 1.2 for around 1.5 years and want something faster any recommendations?
what about luxurious, reliable 40mpg+ commuting cars with under £100 annual road tax. 10k budget list... save on ur commuting car and have a comfy ride so u can spend the savings on the polar opposite
Honda civic 2.0 I-CTDI really good diesel old civic shape FN2 and 0 to 60 stage 1 close to 7 seconds and feels quick inside. my cousin has one 170k miles going strong. really cheap as well
No honda diesel on a stage 1 will do 6 seconds, unless its downhill

What about seat ibiz cr fr 2.0 Tdi?

What website was you on to get the car insurances
My Wife has 08 BMW 120D she got it when 2years old, it had full service history, 32000 miles, I took it to supermarket, it suddenly slowed and stopped, started again by slipping clutch..then stopped...timing chain,it cost £5300 to repair with no help from BMW as it’s second service was six months late and it was outside its warranty period by a month...I owned a company at the time that ran 16 BMWs mix of 1/3/5 series, even so Dealership would not help, we know run Peugeot 3008 and Jaguar XF Fpace in total 36 cars, only two warranty claims in last year, most cars averaged 15000 miles..I won’t ever let BMW back in fleet
All these cars are basically obsolete due to new ulez expansions

Anyone here got an S3 or know much about the 2010-11 era s3s?
