    Dick Sargent lacked the warmth , charm and self deprecating humor of Dick York, he played the role in a sarcastic, distant manner. But the show still worked because of the strength of the rest of the ensemble cast, Liz carried the show almost single handedly from the very first episode , and Agnes Moorhead provided a very solid support, and that was what allowed the show to continue and survive the Dick York departure. Of course by the last season it became obvious that everyone was losing enthusiasm for what had become stale.

    • @ERstat77
      @ERstat77  2 года назад +6

      You can tell because they were just redoing the same scripts as those early seasons.

    • @kerrykeene6471
      @kerrykeene6471 2 года назад +3

      Redoing scripts has nothing to do with the actors. That starts with the producers who decide to go forward with a script. But redoing scripts didn't start with the departure of Dick York, it happened during his time on the show. For example, the second season episode WHAT EVETY YOUNG MAN SHOULD and the fourth season episode IF THEY NEVER MET, both favorites, but "what if" episodes.
      It might have helped if they'd added additional writers to the staff. That cost money. I think Ed Jurist wrote many of the episodes, if not most of them..
      Three final points. BEWITCHED had been picked up for another one or two years, depending on who you listen to, and, according to Bill Asher, the show had run its course with the advent of the changing TV landscape.
      But most importantly, Liz, along with some personal issues, had had enough and she wanted to move on. They offered her more money, but she turned it down.
      So it wasn't Dick York's leaving that ended the series, it was the person who was the "heart" of BEWITCHED that ended it. Liz then moved on to really show what talenti she had by working in more dramatic roles, many women centered.
      I say, be happy that we got eight fun years of a series that was so different from other shows of the time and is still loved generations later.

      Yes Endora could whisk York onto a bed of nails and it seemed like York could somehow take it and it was funny. If Endora did the same to Sargent it seemed distressing which needless to say is not funny. York had truly immense comedic gifts. Obviously Liz has passed on, but it is still feels good that for all the perks that Liz had (beautiful, famous actor father, came from privilege, etc.), she was very down-to-earth, accommodating to her fans, and seemingly wasn't the least bit condescending towards others. The ratings started dropping after season four. Remember, BEWITCHED was #2 behind BONANZA, in the first season, which had been on the air five for years,1969, after BEWITCHED came on in 1964.
    But there's one thing that Liz would never mention in public, her feelings for Dick York. She came to intensely dislike him, because of the way he made her feel uncomfortable. She wanted him released. However, she never brought her feelings to the set. On the other hand, she loved Dick Sargent as a dear friend. She expressed her feelings for him, upon learning of his death.
    Here's one who likes Sargent's Darrin. I find him to be more mature and more level headed than what Dick York's Darrin evolved into, a short tempered man. I blame the writers for that and the era. York didn't like it, either.
    Notice that Liz contradicts what some feel, that she was over it and just going through the motions. Remember, this interview was done around twenty years after season eight ended. She had time to think about her feelings about the series.

    It was nice to see Elizabeth Montgomery go full circle. I always thought there were two Elizabeth Montgomery's. The first five years gave us a funny and warm ingenue and character, whereas they allowed the turmoil of the 1970's to leak into the show. Samantha's personality changed, and she became combative, short tempered, and dare I say even slightly bitchy. She changed physically as well. The same applied for Elizabeth Montgomery in real life (watch a few Passwords and you will see what I mean). The truth is, our culture changed dramatically, and I think most would agree that the show went on probably two seasons too long.

    It speaks volumes that she says nothing about Dick York (only referring to his presence as "the situation"). Producer, William Froug, in a RUclips interview contends, that while York's back had become a serious problem, the underlying cause of his departure from the show was Elizabeth Montgomery did not like him (Froug claims he had an unnatural infatuation of Montgomery, often lingering on the set when he wasn't required, making her uncomfortable). It's a shame too. To this day, if I see Dick Sargent's name and image at the head of the episode, I usually won't watch it. No offense to Sargent's abilities, but Dick York's brilliance overshadowed almost everyone else on the show. Similar to watching an Andy Griffith Show after Don Knotts left. The spark was gone.

    @kerrykeene6471 3 года назад +6

    I want to ask all of you Dick Sargent haters a question. Have any of you read or seen an interview with Elizabeth Montgomery where she specifically singles Dick York out for praise individually? Oh, she had nothing but praise for the cast and crew as a whole. She loved BEWITCHED, but not to the exclusion of all else.
    On the other hand, she loved Dick Sargent as a friend. In 1992, she was asked why she was at the gay pride parade? She said, to paraphrase, for my buddy. That video is out here on RUclips.
    BEWITCHED has been off the air in first run for almost fifty years. It is sad that some find the need to personally attack someone just because they didn't like the way he portrayed a TV character.
    Whether people prefer one actor over another, with their reasons, is fine with me. But please, stay out of the gutter. York and Sargent both were fine actors, but most of all, they were BOTH good people and generous, York was an advocate for the homeless and Sargent was a long-time supporter of the special olympics.
    Personally, I enjoyed both portrayals for different reasons. York's Darrin was more annimated and was there during the growth of the Stephen's marriage and the formative years of Tabitha. Dick Sargent's Darrin was less annimated and was there for the maturity of their marriage, for the continued maturity of Tabitha's powers and for the birth of their son Adam and the degelopment of his powers. But most importantly, for me, a kinder and more accepting of who Sam is AND something York's Darrin would never have accepted, an on call witch maid and sitter. Yes, York's Darrin accepted Aunt Clara, sort of, but he came to "accept" her, because even he realized she was bumbling, but sweet.
    I think that Elizabeth wouldn't care for some of the comments below. I say this because she hated tabloids like The Star and other tabloids who printed hurtful articles. She knew the Hollywood scene and didn't like it. She, l'm sure, knew some of the gossip columnists, too.
    Finally, as most know, Elizabth Montgomery was a very private person and as Herbie Pilato, her biigrapher, said in a couple of 2020 interviews, all Elizabeth wanted to be was a regular person. She was down to earth as are her three children. Check these interviews out on RUclips. He wrote the first ever hook on BEWITCHED called THE BEWITCHED BOOK and it's current version BEWITCHED FOREVER and interviewed Elizabeth four times in the mid to late 80s for the books. He says that he was grateful that she let him "into her world".
    I suggest that, before people lob insults at someone, that they go and find out who Dick Sargent was, as a person. Try living a life that isn't your own for fear of retribution. How would people feel if society wouldn't let them mourn in public the death of their partner for twenty years. This is what Dick Sargent faced, fear and hate, except he didn't face that on BEWITCHED. The only one that showed him disrespect was Agnus Moorehead, because he wa the one who replaced Dick York. This brought out Liz's anger and she basically wouldn't let it go until Moorehead apologized, on the set. But she still felt hard against Sargent until season eight.
    Check out www.harpiesbizarre.com/index.html and the interviews with Sargent, Pilato, Liz, and others.

      She rarely mentioned Dick York in interviews.Notice here she mentions by name supporting players but not the actor who played her husband for the first 4 or 5 years of the show .Even when given the opportunity to touch on Dick York,( his replacement Sargent)she doesn't even go there . You'd think she would have a little to say about him The poor man was a trooper for playing through excruciating back pain .
      His life ended in destitution because of his failing health,and according to York,he at one point tried calling EM later in his life but she never returned his call
