Bewitched certainly did hit an unfortunate slump following the fifth and sixth season. Things changed when Dick York left the show and was replaced by Dick Sargent.
While Dick Sargent enjoyed the role, one of his co-stars wasn’t too happy about the change. It seems that he also came at the wrong time, as Elizabeth Montgomery was gradually getting bored of her role.
In fact, the show's ratings fell sharply after Dick York left the show. Nevertheless, there was still a demand to watch Bewitched from a legion of loyal fans. The show managed to run for 8 seasons and for 254 episodes. It became the longest-running fantasy sitcom of its time.
But the writing was on the wall that Bewitched was on its last legs. Many of the later episodes seemed to be re-workings of older episodes from earlier seasons. In fact, when it was announced that the show would come to an end, the writers weren’t particularly creative with the series finale.
Bewitched remains one of the most-loved American sitcoms of all time. It was a unique show about a seemingly typical American suburban couple. But the fact that the leading lady had magical powers was unique to audiences and was the main draw of the show.
The magic is what caused the show to become so popular. It also managed to bag several Emmy nominations and a few wins. But the magic couldn’t last forever, and it was only thanks to contractual agreements that it managed to last as long as it did. Even Elizabeth Montgomery had to be convinced not to quit the show.
Let’s look back at the scene that took Bewitched off the air and learn about the show’s legacy…

the main reason Dick York left was do to health...mainly back pain......before Bewitched While filming the movie They Came to Cordura (1959) with Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth, he suffered a permanent, disabling back injury. In York's own words, "Gary Cooper and I were propelling a handcar carrying several 'wounded' men down [the] railroad track. I was on the bottom stroke of this sort of teeter-totter mechanism that made the handcar run.
I was just lifting the handle up as the director yelled 'cut!' and one of the 'wounded' cast members reached up and grabbed the handle. Now, instead of lifting the expected weight, I was suddenly, jarringly, lifting his entire weight off the flatbed - 180 pounds or so. The muscles along the right side of my back tore. They just snapped and let loose. And that was the start of it all: the pain, the painkillers, the addiction, the lost career.

Why are you clickbaiting people? You claim in the title of your videos that there's scenes that took certain shows off the air but never actually talk about the scene. Instead your videos only talk about what the shows were about; who the characters were and who played them, the plot of show but never talk about any such scene that ended a show. Shame on you for clickbaiting people.

    • @kerrykeene6471
      @kerrykeene6471 2 года назад +12

BEWITCHED got dealt a bad hand. Much of it was beyond the control of the producers. You see, they didn't know that Alice Pierce had terminal cancer,
Dick York didn't tell them about his bad back, and the untimely death of Marion Lorene, who Elizabeth loved. She and her husband and Alice Pierce and her husband became very close.
I liked Dick York, but my liking of his Darrin declined over the years. In the first two seasons, his Darrin was kinder. For me, the last three seasons that York was on the show, his Darrin, too often, became a screaming bully. That wasn't York's fault. Maybe that's why I love the scene in IT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN TO A DOG, after refusing to listen to why Sam had to do it, she threw Darrin out of the room, and not very nicely. He's lucky she didn't turn him into a dog, to teach him a lesson.
Maybe that's why I like Dick Sargent's Darrin. He was far kinder to Sam, and a maturity in the marriage could be seen, in my view. Darrin still didn't like witchcraft, BUT he didn't freak out when Sam had to use it. His Darrin very seldom screamed at Sam, and when he did, generally apologized to her, in the moment.
Another thing, Liz and Dick Sargent became very good friends. She was his biggest supporter.

I think it last for 1 season, about 10 episodes, in 1977, before being canceled. It didn't follow the originals dialog at all. First of all, in the original, Tabitha was older than her brother, Adam, but in the spinoff series, Adam is older. Also, both Tabitha and Adam were witches, and the spinoff series, Adam is a mortal with no magical powers, and Elizabeth Montgomery never made a guest appearance as Samantha.

I don't think Dick York was the best option to play Darren in the first place. Granted I was only 4 when they started the series but I do think I always thought it was a mismatch. I never saw Dick York as handsome enough for a very beautiful Elizabeth and I didn't understand what 'Samantha' would have seen in that 'Darren'. Actually the 2nd 'Darren' was a better option from the start. I do feel sorry for Dick York though. He spent the entire time in the 1960s in agony with his back issue as the movie where he damaged it in a most unusual way took place in the 50's. There is a special on YT about him explaining the type of injury was very unusual and he did a lot of damage with one action.

What really happened was Elizabeth Montgomery and William Asher were both in the middle of a divorce. Montgomery wouldn't return that summer to begin a 9th season and Erin Murphy stated that she went to summer camp instead. The 8th season was mostly remakes, and not just the last episode. I would say lazy writing had a lot to do with the shows demise and most people didn't like Sargeant as Darrin. The show ran 254 episodes and definitely had a great run. Elizabeth did Lizzie Borden in 1975 which was brilliantly done.

So much misinformation on "Facts" Verse. The truth is that Dick York HAD to leave for medical reasons, and they put Dick Sargent in the role. The audience did, in fact, did mind the substitution very much. With Sargent in the role, the ratings of the show immediately began to drop like a rock. There was friction on the set because Sergeant didn't get along with Agnes Moorhead, and Montgomery and Asher had started to fight. The writers began not to care anymore .In fact at least half of the Dick Sergeant episodes were thinly disguised remakes of Dick York episodes. Things got so bad that everyone, including ABC, agreed to let it go.

I'm a child of the 60's and Bewitched was one of my favorite shows along with The Flintstones, Lost in Space, Gilligan's Island, etc. I was sad when it was cancelled and yes, it does still hold up today. You see, not seeing these shows for many years makes one long for the good old days of television 📺 when you had to use your imagination to really understand the story. These days, they all follow a very pat format. It's actually boring. I'd rather watch old movies...which I do. Too bad Elizabeth Montgomery succumbed to cancer. We're she still with us, she would undoubtedly be very wealthy.

Bewitched was one of the few sitcoms that spanned mid-20th century into early late. I'd heard that Bill Asher had committed her to an 8th season of the show ('71-'72) she did NOT want to do, and there was a contractual obligation for a 9th season! SO... the final season was a rush job, having completed all the filming before the end of November 1971, with those episodes airing until late March. The aforementioned 9th Season was "fulfilled" by 'The Paul Lynde Show' in '72-'73. It seemed to do well enough at first, but began a ratings slide that meant no 2nd season, but got through the one obligated.
The show's failure was not Paul's fault. He did the best he could with the material given. He didn't have 'wacky fun people' and situations to play off of. The premise was fundamentally flawed. I think it was also unfairly compared to Bob Newhart's new show that also started in Sept. '72. Lynde was a smart man and always had the tailor-made gig of 'The Hollywood Squares'. Still, I think he did see himself as a 'failure' of sorts due to the failure of the show named after him. It's easy for us to feel that's not true at all (which it wasn't), but we're always harder on ourselves.

One of the most entertaining, fabulous shows ever. The editing, cuts from scene to scene, music, sound effects, campiness, on and on. Eudora’s and Serena’s wardrobes made the show worth watching. A lot of colorized versions of the first two seasons are out there now, but I love watching them in black and white as they were intended. The color starting with season 3 was amazing. That was the first year all prime time programming was in color. People had spent $400 to $800 on a color TV, which would be the equivalent of about $3,500 to $6,000 in today’s money, so they expected beautiful vivid colors, and this show delivered. One can notice each piece of wardrobe and furnishings are perfectly color coordinated. That’s what makes the computerized coloring of the first two seasons so offputting.

First of all, there was NO SCENE that ended BEWITCHED! The show was actually renewed for at least a nineth season, and I've heard that two more seasons were actually planned.
There is only one reason that BEWITCHED ended, Elizabeth Montgomery pulled the plug for several reasons, one of which is she wanted to move on to other projects. As Bill Asher said in the A&E special in 1999 on Liz Montgomery, the show had run its course.
I want to point out to people that it wasn't Dick York, Agnes Moorehead, Alice Pierce, etc. that were key to BEWITCHED, in the view of the execs. They were all very important to the show, but it was Elizabeth Montgomery who was/is the heart and soul of the series. It was she the execs gave a raise to and part ownership of the series to keep her. The video points this out.
For those who decided not to watch seasons six thru eight, because Dick York wasn't there, due to health issues, missed some excellent episodes, one an award winner and another nominated for an award for best makeup. The video fails to mention SISTERS AT HEART winning a special Emmy.
Fianally. Redoing episodes or themes didn't start after season five. It started in season one. An example is IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE is similar to LING LING. In season five, SAMANTHA ON THE KEYBOARD and SAMANTHA THE SCULTURESS are also similar in theme. In both cases, Dick York's Darrin blew his cool because Endora had bewitched Tabitha's hands to play the piano and in the latter, Tabitha was doing what Sam described as, "Doing something that comes naturally."
The thing that turned me off to Dick York's Darrin, at times, was his over reacting to events. I can see why be had little liking for Endora, but when the writers had him yelling at Sam, that got under my skin. It wasn't York's fault.
That's probably why I like Dick Sargent's Darrin better. For me, his Darrin was much kinder to to Sam than the way they wrote York's version. Having said that, Doc York's Darrin was a lot more low key in the first two seasons. That's why I like EYE OF THE BEHOLDER and other episodes of the first two seasons. Something changed after that.
Despite all of this, BEWITCHED is my favorite comedy which had a great cast and production.

The Kravitzes were the funniest characters up there. I love them, especially Gladys Kravitz. It was funny how she would see something conjured up by witchcraft and try to prove it to Abner, and then when he goes to see, it not there or normal making it look like Gladys is crazy.

Does anyone remember the toy soldier episode when the toy soldier grew human-sized and joined the Stephens's and Larry Tate for dinner? I wonder how many takes were needed to keep the actors from exploding with laughter. Sitting in that restaurant with a full grown, silent, grinning toy come to life, and Samantha and Darrin being perfectly nonchalant in front of Larry Tate.

Dick York "had" to leave the show he helped make iconic and revered through no fault of his own., Mr York had a previous back injury while on a movie set before Bewitched that never really ever went away and which came back to cripple him 10 fold! Unfortunately medical was still in its infancy at that time and he never got relief and was in constant pain. That's why he had to leave the tv show..Yes he was additionally in a constant state of painful exhaustion. The pain is now gone Mr York, rest in peace ❤..

This explanation totally ignores the fact that Elizabeth Montgomery had an affair on the set of Bewitched that destroyed her marriage. As the show progressed, Montgomery carried on an affair with the show's director Richard Michaels. The result was Elizabeth and her husband William Asher (the show's producer) getting divorced which really killed the show as well as lousy rating.

    • @jonathandelahay-jones3144
      @jonathandelahay-jones3144 Год назад

The only reason she had an affair with Richard Michaels was because Bill Asher had been having affairs for years and when she found out she kicked him out. Bill Aher himself blamed himself for the marriage break up.

Losing Dick York was certainly a big blow to the series. Another blow was it used less writers in it's last years and they started using remakes of earlier episodes or pretty much the same themes. The best season was the the first when Danny Arnold was the producer. He kept the magic to a minimum and concentrated on human interest themes but ABC kept insisting on more magic and Arnold left. The show was number 2 when Arnold was there and while it remained a top rated show for some time, it never reached that height again.

My 5 year old is completely obsessed with the show. So much so that all she wanted for her 5th birthday were Bewitched Barbie’s. I was able to find a vintage Samantha, but had to use vintage Barbie dolls and vintage clothes to create Darrin and Endora. She plays bewitched with the Barbie’s, but also just pretends to be samantha or tabitha (I’m either endora or samantha, and my husband is always Darrin). So it’s definitely still making a mark.

It absolutely doesn't hold up today. It was a sign of the times with how women were supposed to be home caring for the house and kids and obeying her husband and follow his orders. She was constantly hiding what she did, constantly ordering her daughter to hide who she really was and constantly saying she was sorry. It was only a level or two above I Love Lucy only Darren didn't spank Samantha like Ricky did to Lucy.
Just once I'd like to have see Samantha hug Tabitha and say she was proud of her little witch.

"Bewitched" was one of my favorite TV shows growing up, and likely made me predisposed to like "Harry Potter" when it first came out. For that matter, I suspect that "Bewitched" was a big influence on "Harry Potter;" especially the idea of a hidden society of magic users and their uneasy relationship with the "muggle world." (I can just imagine a confrontation between 'Lord' Voldemort and Endora . . . .)
    Thanks for posting this!

Bewitched was a 60s television sitcom that, by far, superseded all others. Elizabeth Montgomery alone was magnetic. Now add in the cast of characters pulled from old Hollywood and beyond was a source of endless delight for me.
If I had had to watch Gilligan's Island and I Dream of Jeannie (crap in my opinion), there would have been nothing.
This was more than a te;evision sitcom. It was pure magic. It was a television phenomenon and helped me get through what otherwise would have easily been a very mundane childhood.

Odd! I've only ever heard that Dick York was terminated, following his hospitalization, and treatment for prescription pain med addiction, which had resulted from a severe back injury on the set of a western film, shortly before beginning his role on Bewitched. He had been thrown by a horse. Agnes Morehead was furious about his release, partly because she new he had worked quite hard to get healthy, and had succeeded in doing so. Dick York was the best Darren, hands down! The series may have actually run 9+ seasons, had they not made the gutless switch. I know my parent's stopped watching after the switch. They felt betrayed by the network. Network TV hasn't changed much. I no longer watch network series, because I refuse to invest my time and energy, into shows, only to see them cancelled. They notoriously mislead the viewers, by referring to them as the #1 this, and the best new BS! All lies! NOT INTERESTED!
