I always get so inspired by your tutorials. Other creators do not hit as hard with inspo. They feel more of an technical instruction, but yours feel like free falling to creativity pit haha
so i started watching your videos just for the sake of watching. not because I actually want the effect right now. Its amazing content! And the course is also absolutely genius. Thank you for the content!
Bro, i'm starting my motion graphics business thanks to you. You inspire me, I studied filmmaking and feel more complete in VFX area with your tutorials.
For anyone struggling with the triangle part at the start, if you pickwick the anchor point in 'Transform: Repeater 1' to the main Transform of the triangle shape layer, it will twist along the row of triangles as in the video. I don't think it's what is happening in the video, but this is a workaround.
So I had a huge problem trying to get the Triangles to twist upon themselves like in the tutorial, and I think it is due to how my AE was setup in terms of standard anchor points. It seems that my AE was set that for the shapes, the anchor point was still the center of the composition. It made huge loops instead of the twisting effect. This was my fix. 1- Turn on Titles/Action Safe 2- With the Pen Tool, create the triangle using the Top of the Cross, the Center, then the right of the cross. 3- The Anchor Point for the Triangle is going to be on it's left-most corner. Move the Anchor Point until it is in the middle of the bottom line of the Triangle. 4- Now, and only now, use the Repeater and get a nice line of triangles. 5- Go to Transform: Repeater 1, and change the rotation there. That should solve the issue! Worked in class for everyone.
How do I change the default anchor point in After Effects? Follow these steps to set your default anchor point to the center of the layer: Step 1: Go to "Preferences" under the "After Effects" menu. Step 2: Select “General” Step 3: Click the check box next to “Center Anchor Point in New Shape Layers”
Waouh! A dream becoming true. Thanks to you I can reproduce this sequence that stroke me so much on a big screen when I was a kid... Thank you so much!
Dude these are so great. I'm usually just lurking, but I'm dropping a comment for algorithm goodness. Thank you for these concise, quick and simple tutorials!!
love it! initially i thought you were gonna use a camera and maybe animate 3d position with motion tiles? all for that juicy depth of field plus some motion blur would i think would be sick :)
Hey Ben, really cool, as always!! Any suggestions on how to create a twirl effect as addition to your effect? Besides just twirling the whole thing, to give it some extra level... and anyways, trying to get in contact with you over the last few years (already I guess) wrote you on linkedin and a few more pages... any suggestions??
Maybe precomp the whole thing, add rotation to the composition and add a time displace effect (with a circular gradiënt). That way it will twist in cool ways I think.
He did kind of in the end by offsetting the exported clips on top of each other. Echo and Time displace suck up more ram than most plugins in AE, so I get why he didn't go that route.
Thanks a lot for this fantastic tutorial :) Unfortunately the rotation of my triangle doesn't twist correctly even though I´m rotating it inside the repeater. Can´t figure this out :(
awesome work instead of duplicating the original layer and mirroring it ... why didn't you use the polar coordinate effect i think it will make it more warpy than the clear slit in the middle but as always impressive work
I've always wondered why the glow had to be duplicated. It seems that the last one added would overtake the others. It's there an additive effect with the glow?
Great Video, thank Ben. When I import the .png sequence back into AE as a new composition it keep making the frame rate 30fps even though I have been working at 12fps thus far and I only have 23 png's back from photoshop. Any idea what's happening?
I wanted to use this technique but I’ve noticed that after you draw the masks on the fractal layer it has a tiny stroke that corresponds to the tint colour you set. I just checked your project file and it’s on that. Any ideas of how to get rid of this?

Thanks so much Olena! Thats the greatest compliment I could hear

"free-falling to creativity" is a great way of putting it. Ben has a great way of not letting technical get in the way of being creative. 👑

How's business
Oh my god finally! There’s a few star gate sequence after effects tutorials on RUclips, and never expected you to make a video on it!!!
DAMN. This is amazing. A bunch of scribbles on a 15000 px wide black solid becomes a galaxy! Thank you for this one
Always wanted to do this effect. It's one of my most loved movies. Thank you very much indeed

Thank you so much! I'm really stuck at this point. I didn't even hope that someone faced the same problem🙏

@@alexanderdigiacomo557 I had the exact same issue and this fixed it perfectly, thank you so much!
Great tutorial. But is space odyssey playing on low volume throughout?
At least the first 2 minutes right? 😂
I kept pausing the video trying to suss what I had open in the background
@@mikeprice25 same 😂
Haha, whoops. Gotta remember to mute those audio tracks next time. Looks like I left it on for the first 2 mins. Thanks for catching it

Well, you make me remember of some MTV animation
Happy to help with the memories :)
I've always wanted to play with graphics as i could do in ps and u've helped me achieve tht. Thank you!
When you pulled the right side a little bit forward than the left, it looked like you were turning a curve. Sweet
WOW, the best content and creativity of all time! Thanc u for sharing your knowledge and the free project file.
These results are incredible.
Loved the tut! Quick Tip: You could bump up from 8b to 16b or 32b and the glow really pops. without needing to add tons of glows. 😁
Brillant method. We are learning many things thanks to you @Ben Marriott. Thank you very much :)
I was looking for this a while ago, I'm stoked you made a video on it !
God i like that
Gonna try it soon

Great tut! Got a lot of take aways and techniques from it! Great work!
This is EXACTLY the effect I’ve been looking for! Thank you so much.
Awsome tutorial. Thank you!
I once tried actually using the original slit-scan technique.
Oh damn! How did that go?

Thanks Ben, I learnt a ton of stuff from this and got a great end result animation!
BRAVO ! your tuts are awesome man !
THANK GOD! I was hoping you'd come out with a new video! I've been feining for new content. Lol, thanks!

fabulous tutorial, been looking for a way to do this for a while, thanks so much!
Ben you Rock!
This was best, thanks ben
Great tutorial as always! gonna have a crack at it now!
This is insane.. finally we can do time travelling with after effects
thank you much for the tutorial, I created similar effect with a different shape
This is really cool Ben 😎
Thanks Hayley! :) Very quick on the draw

Thank you for this tutorial sir
Such a dynamic and useful tutorial, Ben blesses us again!

superb video it just like seen of interstellar movie

Adding some Echo (and maybe even time displace) might get really cool results aswell. Kinda suprised you didn't do that.

Cool idea! I was going to guess you were going to use 3d layers instead of power pin but I guess power pin would render faster I imagine?

Hey guys, for the peeps that want to see the movie again or havent seen it at all yet...its on prime video aswell :)
hope you don't get copyright struck from that audio haha. great tutorial!
I’d do it on two rotating cylinders in 3d with a static camera
Thanks a lot for this fantastic tutorial :)
Unfortunately the rotation of my triangle doesn't twist correctly even though I´m rotating it inside the repeater. Can´t figure this out :(
If you align the shape at the very center of the composition it works... took me a while
This is so cool! What would be a good way to make a seamless loop with this?
With all the shit happening in the world, still feel lucky to live today and not before Ben Marriott : )
That escalated quickly
I once tried to recreate the physical way they originally made this effect, but using C4D. I couldn't get it to work. This is way easier haha

Would have wanted that VPN deal but next payday isn't here yet
I wonder how cool it'd be if the loop were perfect...
good good god!
Can you do the through the pipe effect please?
Is there a way to loop this seamlessly?
My head hurts! 🙃
I've always wondered why the glow had to be duplicated. It seems that the last one added would overtake the others. It's there an additive effect with the glow?
how much ram do I need to make something like this, using after effects?

I haven't done this project yet, but I'd say increase the feather on your masks and it should go away.
Where can i learn VFX as a beginner in AE?
how can you do a loop with that?
wow.....
