I've had mine (early 70's) for over thirty years. I love the feel of it. Like the person that you got yours from, I put in true humbuckers, and grover tuners.
I have one of these. Good info. Yes, plays just like a Gibson. Was worked on by a tech before I traded a Rickenbacker for it, pickups replaced, tuned, etc. Great neck.
I recently bought a '79 Matsumoto made Memphis Les Paul copy with a set neck. It's exactly like the one my Dad bought me when I was 15. Which I stupidly traded for a Kramer Pacer in '82. This one I bought actually plays and sounds as good, if not better than my 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard. I replaced the original pickups with a set of T-type pickups by Pariah pickups. They're based on an actually set of Gibson T-Top pickups from the 70s. They sound great!! A little brighter than my Gibson, but the original T-Tops were a little brighter sounding anyway.
My parents bought me one of these in the early 80s for around $99. I haven't had it in years but I remember the pickups being the chrome double coil humbuckers.
These never had true humbuckers. These were single coil pickups with the humbuckerrings, and covers, but there is only one coil under the covers. And no they weren't Big coils either. It was take the cover off, and see a half empty pickup.
