My favorite body has a similar problem and I've had it for almost 72 years. You never pay as much attention to a neck until it is damaged. I just wish a luthier could repair mine, but the damaged parts are made of bone. Cheers to your luthier who did a magnificent job! And cheers to you for sharing your always incredible skills on the instrument!
You okay, man?
😆
Wooo, I see what you did there
You can get a new one.
I mean, i know im sposed to be impressed by the new nuno solo…and i am. It is impressive. But this guy’s solos are moving. Big diff. Greco looks the biz, maestro!
Nuno excites those romantic European bots who base their judgement of music in Eurovision. I’m sorry but there’s no other way to put that. It’s true and I know not why it’s a phenomenon.
Nuno is more rhythmic, energetic. Chris’s playing is more ‘romantic’ or ‘poetic’ and subtle. Both are great artists, just different. And like it or not, looks are important. Nuno looks more flashy, oozing a rockstar vibe so his music/playing will always be more noticeable/popular.
I'm convinced Chris could play a broom with strings and make it sound like a dream. Cheers, Chris, you are a classic!
My god mate. That opening solo is stunning and so powerful.
What Greco model is this guitar? I love a little fret 58 spec ❤ I got a Morgan with a pair of holmes you would properly enjoy 👍
It's the solo from the song terra firma by his band cardinal black and i highly recommend listening to the song in full
@@BazzyPredPop It is a EGF 1200 Super real from 1980.
All of his solo's are "stunning and powerful" you will be very hard pressed to find one that is not.😁
I have been playing since i was 15 and am 59 now and Chris is my favorite player for the reasons you listed as well
as he is not a shred freak. He plays fast only when it fits the structure of the solo/song. Far too many play fast all the time and it is lets just say Boring and old now.
instructive. I have owned several of these and never found the neck to be good. Finally they are sleepers in my collection. Good to read that you agree. The sum of all these repair/upgrade works make me dubious that these are worth it.
Please have MORE Les Paul/Burst orientated content on this channel, Chris!?!? PLEASE???!!!lol I love it.
As an average guitar tech I was inspired and intimidated by the exceptional work done on that guitar. Thanks
Hugh Price is a magician having refretted and levelled my 1988 Japanese Strat. Plays beautifully and has improved since the work was done.
Repairing your guitar must have been a tough decision and a nerve wrecking experience, but it is beautiful now. The Luthier has a magical touch.
Hello Sgt,, 👍
What a great job your guy has done for you, The repair looks invisible now, like it never happened.
You have such a great sound and playing from the heart, it is obviously your strong suit.
Only a handful of players are so, instantly recognizable by their technique.
You are one of them.
That intro though, wow! So much soul, groove and taste. Chris, you are the man!
Gorgeous job, and that sound, from you! That solo at 7+ minutes is just so inspiring, nuanced and emotive, man your playing blows my mind Chris!
Wow! That bit of work has made such a difference. What an absolute master Huw is, absolutely beautiful job. Sounds like you’re really enthused by the guitar now, it’ll be great to see and hear it out on the road. Can’t wait. Enjoy 😎
Thanks Chris, enjoyed all the detail. You are very well spoken and I enjoy hearing you talk about your passion!
Congrats Chris! It is one of the best feelings in the world when a guitar you already love becomes even better after a needed repair or mod. Same thing happened to me when I refretted my '79 LP Custom. Cheers
That is a beautiful ax!! Well worth the time, investment, and seems your decisions on it were spot on…Cant tell you how much I enjoy your Friday fretworks and look forward to each one…thank you and please keep ‘em’ coming…
Brilliant job done by Hugh. He did some work on my 74 Greco sa700 a short time ago and his work is top draw. Can't recommend him enough
Those repairs probably cost more than the purchase price of the guitar but now it's all great again and made to fit your hands and ears and that's the most important thing :)
Imagine being able to pick up the guitar at home…nobody is around…and sounding like Chris.
I’ve heard a lot about neck breaks on Les Pauls and thought “Yeah blah blah” but I saw a nice 2003 60s reissue Classic and noticed the angle of the headstock ! Holy macaroni , danger danger ! Greco sounds great .!!
really cool....!!!! all great ideas, and improvements....sounds sensational...and a story with a happy ending too!!!!!!!!!
Chris love that you use your Cardinal Song to demonstrate this guitar, to be fair the whole combo gives us (your viewers a seriously great look) great work and massive song !
Your playing always blows me away
Can't wait for your mentioned video on your experience with the replacement bridge & tailpiece!
Well done Chris!
Looking forward to see you play this in Amsterdam (may 12th), Chris! 🎸
Nice job Buckmaster. Well done Huw.
That’s the best playing I’ve ever heard from you!
✌️😎🎸🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
"Tidy" Video Chris ... Totally agree with some of the changes 👍
Someone made a great job of redoing the neck 👍
Nicely done all around. Liked the outro 😊
Your playing is just incredible! 🐐
Interesting journey this Greco guitar has been on. Glad to see Huw's repair didn't disguise the break, but nicely incorporated the cracks into the character of the modded neck.
Chris, you're my favourite lead player. So emotive. The way you maximize the advantage of sustain is excellent
Beautiful guitar! Very skilled luthier too. Not seen that shrink wrap technique before. Very clever. And those nylon nuts are nightmare to cut, but people swear by them. Some of these early Japanese lawsuit guitars are every bit as good as the real thing and the prices are beginning to reflect that, especially the early Yamahas. Lots of fun to be had on eBay if you’re willing to gamble! Have a good weekend everyone.
Chris, this is the first video of yours I have seen. Excellent! I was victim of a neck break and the pain it caused me decades back. What is excellent is your guitar playing style, man handling your guitar like very few I have witnessed before....don’t break the neck playing, cause you know how to command great riffs like SRV with that physical style I really like. Hendrix is another one who was physical in his guitar playing!
The end... awesome. i played it like 20 times over and over again ;)
⚓️ Thanks Chris 😎
Looks and sounds great!
Would you consider making a video on the difference between the finger up-rake that you and some other folks do, and the picked downstroke rake? It's a technique I'm noticing more and more and I've never really considered it over the traditional rake. I'm curious your thoughts!
Love your playing!!
Amazing guitarist.
What a luthier! I've got a strat that needs a refret, he's going to have to be the man of choice
Very interesting and enjoyable!
Looking forward to seeing you and the Les Paul at either the Guildford or London show mate.
you make anything sound off the chain awesome
I just got my 50 Gold top back from getting the neck reprofiled early 60"S. WOW , i love it so much more!
Looks and sounds great, Huw did a lovely job. Unfortunately going to miss the Belfast gig this time, unless I can persuade my wife to spend our 25th wedding anniversary there. 🤔 Cheers
Sounds amazing!!! You guys have got to come to the states!!!!! Don't forget Ohio WHEN you do. Keep up the great work and fantastic playing
I bought 2 Les Pauls with headstock breaks years ago. Still have both. Beat the snot out of them and they are still solid. Never an issue for me.
Such thick tone you get from the bridge pickup!
A fantastic sounding guitar for significantly less cash! Very nice Chris!
Quickest like I've ever clicked! Knew from Insta what the first jam would be. That last jam is also absolutely fantastic
Ok. That sounds so great to my untrained ears. Smokin playing as usual.
Been looking at a lot of grecos lately. They seem great. Cheers!
Sos increíble!!👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🎸 Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷
I bought one on Reverb that had a broken neck, it plays and sounds amazing, Im very happy
with it, and it has Mojo"
Looks an amazing job 👌
Took my 1980 LP Custom into the local luthier recently for some very LONG overdue TLC - one straightening of the truss rod, expensive refret, replacement saddle and new set of 9's later, it feels like a guitar transformed... 😬
Hoping to hear it in Nottingham 👍
Awesome job in that neck repair and refinish! Looks like it had never happend!
Looking forward to your bridge/tailpiece experiments 👍🏻
Some nice chops, mate.
Gorgueus job! I'm surprisied you didn't try RadioShop PAF's, I loved them on my LP.
Guess I was late to the table, but recently I discovered that brands like Greco, Tokai, and Burny have reached the nearly mythic status of the original actual item - even to the point where folks tread thin ice talking about modding them, and at least Tokai have launched multi-tier quality instruments being made from Japan to Korea to China.
While I’ve never played an original 50’s burst, I’ve owned a couple of Gibson LP Classics and SGs, and currently own a 1981 Tokai Love Rock, and the Tokai is every bit as good if not better than the Gibsons. The craftsmanship of the Tokai is on point.
I love these japanese beauty ! My 1979 Tokai Les Paul LS80 is awesome.. It sounds like the originals
I had a Black one black in the late 90s. I dont know what happened to it! I understand how ya feel about it. I wished I never got rid of Mine! Played Smooth
I just ran into you on RUclips and you play real fucking good. You have a master class I think. I'm gonna check it out
Oh, that first solo/jam...!
I was half expecting to see an opening shred by Chris on a headless les Paul.
All my LPs are made in Japan. Great guitars!
The truth..how many of your solo clips are first takes?! Haha. Great video and playing, as usual! ✌🏼
,,,,,,,... Watching from land o' lakes,wi....USA ....................great vid,playing,,as always,🎸🎸🎸🎸
Congrats on getting your Gibson road worthy. It looks and sounds like everything went well.
Eh, "Greco" 😅 but it goes to show how this, Tokai, and I guess Burny have reached equal - and in some cases - higher status than the original actual item.
Greco
I have a 1986 Burny Super Grade, which I guess is based on a 1960 Les Paul. It’s cured my LP itch
I own 2 Japanese Les Paul guitars. A 1980 Aria Pro II and an @1983 Memphis. First thing I did was refret them and for the money they are as good as Gibson for 1/10 the price.
I'm curious of the headstock angle. I can't believe I hadn't checked before, I owned both a 81 Greco Les Paul and a 78 Greco semi hollow. That one was not a 335, looked like one but smaller and thinner. There weren't a lot, every time I tried to look on Google images for one it always brought up the very one that I owned (I could tell from marks and case), in different people's ownership.
I remember the Greco Les Paul's G-string held tune just fine, which is rare for the Gibsons, and I tend to bend the G more than other strings. I know Epiphone LP hold tune just fine, but they use a a less acute angle.
I was pissed when I sold the Semi hollow for $800, and found out a few months later I could have sold the pickups for $700 alone🙄.
I dropped several different pickups; I had Lollars for a while, I worked in a repair shop that was a Lollar distributor and got a good deal on them, so put them in a few guitars. I ended up putting them in an ES335, they were low winds and the scooped sound did better in a semi hollow. I've had Fralin Pure PAFs that I had in a drawer for a decade and put in on a whim, and they're the best ones for the Les Paul. The Greco LP is long gone, I just said f'ck it and bought a McCarty 594 Singlecut and pulled out the 58/15LTs and put the Fralins in. I know everyone loves those pickups but they just didn't do it for me.
MY dream Les Paul is a Telecaster.
I got a 79 japanese "LP" , branded 'Eagle' (was a distributor name). Almost mint in (dignified cardboard) OHSC. Very nice fit and finish, superb luthery apart... A bolt on neck ! (like most of the praised "lawsuit" Ibanez..).
It's more a plain top but with a very nice sunburst.
Fun fact: the pick up were super weak fake humbuckers (single coil under the metal covers). .. I put Gibson pups (500t/496r... almost vintage correct !) instead and redid the whole circuit. Et voila ! a really nice LP, quite convincing cosmetically (unless you look at the heel) and sonicaly.
I fix boats with West System epoxy products. Never thought of using it on guitars, but that makes a lot of sense.
you are a beast!
Mr Buck, you should try a set of Seymour Duncan Green Magic pickups in that guitar. I put a set in my Gibson Custom Shop Green Lemon Fade 59 and they’re incredible. The guitar was a monster to begin with and the out of phase on the middle setting is as close to the Peter Green tone as I’ve ever heard. Definitely worth it!
I gotta grab a Tokai and Greco.Very nice guitars
I’ve got an 82 Greco Super Real. I’d love to have it refinished like yours has been.
If anyone can recommend someone I’d be very grateful
🔥
One of my LP's I've broke the neck 4 times, with at least one before I got it, 2 of those breaks are from the original repair(s) being garbage, the last 2 are for sure from my abuse, I play hard and sometimes I used to follow it through drum sets, crowds, half stacks etc... S happens. (to be fair at the time no one cared about mid 70's LP's no one being aware of the rarity of 74' factory standards... oops, but I'll never sell it so quit worrying right) after the last repair, its rock solid and hold tune for weeks.
Great episode, as always. With this successful restoration, I'm wondering if you might be selling your Panucci? ( One can always ask and I'm not just kicking the tires.) Plus wondering when you might be coming across the pond? Hopefully soon!!!!!
I’m a fan for sure! Thank you for your great videos ! I have been studying vintage & I don’t know, ideal? Les Paul body weights? (Non weight relieved) I bet you have some numbers that you have written down for sure… Is it possible that you can tell me/us your enquiring fan(s) how much yours weighs? Please, I really am interested. My 1980 Super Real weighs 10lbs-3oz. I have always been bothered that it’s another 10 pounder! But there wasn’t a choice. I just bought another LP, a 1992 (non weight relieved) Classic Plus. and the seller showed me a photo of his scale which showed 8-1/2lbs. Well, it showed up and USPS weighed it for me and it actually weighs 9lb-12oz 😮😢I kept it and I’m doing everything to it including putting late 1960 T-Tops with 50’s wiring. Thank you so much!
Thanks Chris and Huw it's wonderful to have a working Les Paul in the collection.
Which Cardinal Black songs did you use a Les Paul for?
Great looking repair!!
What frets did you use? Thinking about re-fretting my Greco.
Check out the Callaham ABR-1 bridge. It is CNC Machined Steel Billet. Really brightened up my Greco and increased the playability.
What kind of Bridge and Tailpiece did you settle on Chris? Great video and playing as always!! Keep on Rockin' Bruddah!
W0W!
I’m sure you have heard the story about Gary ROSSINGTON S 1959 LP.
The headstock was broken and repaired, I assume correctly or what he liked .
It’s the only guitar he ever played ..
But on slide , they say and I hear it crying …..
He was very prolific as are a lot on slide ….
RIP
You need to try Amber Pickups Spirit of 59. They're unbelievably close to the PAF!
Checkout Alan Dingwall PAFs. They’re hands down the best Beano tone I’ve ever had. Bloody amazing.
Just sick
ALL SOUL THAT SOLO WAS,,, THATS WHY YOUR GREAT YOU PLAY FROM YOUR SOUL!
I'm original owner of an 83 gibson LP custom. Sadly for most I'm a lefty.
Humbly I find it the best of the best. It has a pair of tim shaw pafs. Check him out if u don't know. It's a red 3tone burst. The 7way adjustable bridge and the flip open gold tuners. Humble brag again best yr ever. Maybe a future video..
No! LOVE the neck carve of the two R8s I’ve had. Baseball bat lovers unite! Hard to beat SLE 101s or Wizz Preium PAFs.
You also don't grab and push down on the top of a set neck guitar for a tremolo effect without realizing that eventually you will have a problem.
Just play that beautiful Patrick James Eggle Macon!
I seem to recall you stating that it was "the best 'Les Paul' I've ever played."
Much prefer the headstock angle on the revstar. Would love to know what would happen to the sound of a les paul if the headstock was flat 🤔
Probably less sustain...Not like the sustain being gone but less sustain...
Also, the guitar would be harder to intonate and the string tension a bit too slinky especially because of the guitar's shorter 24.75" scale length...
Even if it wasn't exactly the same thing back then, the 1952 Les were built with a shallow neck angle which caused lots of similar issues...
