I admire the hell out of you guys that gar fish. I recently started gar fishing, and as of yesterday I have thrown in the towel on the hobby. The frustration that comes with missing hook sets is just too high for me. My main passion is bass, crappie, and all varieties of saltwater fishing. However, I do live right on a river and occasionally target catfish and use small live perch to catch the bigger ones. I've accidentally caught a few three and four foot gar, but caught a beast a little over six foot long about a month ago. I was like, "Shit, that was fun! Why not bring one of my big salt water rigs while I'm catfishing and start targeting gar?" Been targeting them along with catfish for about a month now and I just can't handle the missed hook ups! Went yesterday and missed about five or six under a cork. Funny, put about a 5 inch long live perch under a cork, cast it in a spot where I had been getting smaller bites earlier. Ha, I must have cast that fish right in a beast of a gar's face because that cork didn't float for 2 seconds before it was taken under and stayed under. I've experiment with different wait times and probably let this one free spool for about 45 or so seconds. In that length of time he rapidly traveled about 50 yards and was heading toward a log jam. Set into him pretty hard and for about two minutes I felt like I was trying to reel in an SUV with the parking brake set! And as quickly as it began, it ended and he somehow came off. Call me a wuss, but I'm done! I'm sure I'll occasionally accidentally hang one catfishing, but just can't take the frustration of the constant missed hook sets. Tight lines to all you bad asses that have more patience for this than I do!
It takes a lot of patience! I’ve mentioned in other videos that you don’t land every run. I’ve had days where the lines were running nonstop and never landed one. But man, it sure does feel like pulling in a SUV😂. That’s the addiction!
Call mr crazy got Kast King III baitfeeder 6000 with 65lb kast king braid and penn fierce 4 rod 10" Heavy rod i got on deal at academy because fierce 8000ll reels were stolen. Wish me luck buddy i will be filming this hopefully if i hook up on a 7 footer i get to land it. If not ill take my 8000 series penn fierce and battle II with 100lb braid to swap out . 😂😂😂
I think bait should've been included in this list. These were all great tips though and I would back them all up. My job got way easier when I started using a lasso!
Have you ever heard of 4 to 6ft gars in a feeding frenzy for over a week? Well I am watching it. Crazy thing is i am on Corpus Christi Bay at the Naval Air Station.. giant gars are feeding on mullet with bottle nosed dolphins.. I guess I need to take video. Easy to see 4 6ft gars rolling at the same time. Yeah, alligator gar can roam through brackish water
People who use 150lb test need to just stop fishing, I’ve literally pulled in a 85lb black drum on a 10lb test, learn to properly fight a fish before trying to tell people how to fish.
There’s a big difference between an 85lb drum and a 200lb gar. And I’ve had 100lb gar snap my 100# braid on the hook set. Drum are also found in the ocean where the risk of your line rubbing on a downed tree doesn’t exist like in the rivers gar are found. If you love fishing with the bare minimum line, go for it. I’d rather not lose trophy fish because I was trying to save a few dollars on cheap line. Nor am I going to suggest to anyone looking to learn how to catch gar that are bigger than your drum and have 2 rows of razor sharp teeth to cheap out on the line. Show me your videos of you repeatedly catching large gar on thin line. Prove me wrong. I’d love to see it, until then…. Fish on man.
@@BitesandStrikesFishing quit bitching and acting like you know what you’re talking about, I fish every weekend and pulled 8-9ft gar out of river with, guess what, 20lb Braided line. Hell I’ve pulled bull sharks bigger then most fish you catch. I don’t need to video cause I don’t need random people patting me on the back lol 😂
@@BitesandStrikesFishing and I know you don’t know what your talking about cause drum are found in the same rivers gar are found, I live near the Brazos and gulf which are all brackish water where big fish are found. You’re not a good fisherman with your facts all wrong lmfao
Great tips as always! Thanks for the knowledge!
Just trying to help out!

I got mine at Tractor Supply. Is was about $30, it’s a youth lasso which is a bit smaller and shorter making it perfect
Caught me a gorgeous 3 1/2 foot gator gar yesterday, Perfect hookset and everything after loosing multiple huge gar before her
Congrats! Next time you’ll get the monster.

Cut up meat. BOOM!
Seen gar get caught with all sorts of bait 🤷♂️
What's your favorite bait to use
Personally I like using shad, it’s very oily and I get more bites faster
How much and where can I find 150lb braided line?
Sometimes bass pro shop has it otherwise you can generally find it on eBay or Amazon
I caught my first spotted gar yesterday on a crank bait
Congratulations! Spotted gar love crank baits!

Yesterday I had like 10+ runs and didn’t catch not even one 😩
Just keep trying. I’ve had those days. Also, make sure you are not in a heavy populated area with turtles
