Awesome gar fishing trip with my buddy Dat. We were really trying to get him on a big one but his day is coming! For more gar videos you can watch this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLMsnn-mzmBDREZ9ZjgGo24S0WXjBKQSxn
You can, it's just harder to do. You'll need to keep the drag very lose so they can pick up the bait and then tighten down the drag before you set the hook. You will also want to make sure the reel has at least 15lbs of drag resistance, otherwise the big ones will over power the reel
Im a fisherman new to Texas. I have 3 world records. I know what is going on. I am staying on NAS Corpus Christi with my RV. I found a spot where there are 4 to 7ft gar feeding frenzies going on. Crazy to watch bottle nose dolphins and alligator gar fishing in the same spot. Well there are huge alligator gar feeding on mullet in Corpus Christi Bay. Just wait and see..
@@BitesandStrikesFishing i was using half a bluegill as bait amd i let them run until i get a signal that they have done something (change direction in the river, stop running, ect)
@@intropeforthefirstime9780 half a bluegill is pretty small. 🤔 might just be turtles. An average soft shell will run and fight as hard as a 5’ gar. I normally let the gar run till he stops, and then set when they take off again. I always try to set when they are going full speed

💔 I will be back better than ever. Our time is coming SOON❗️
It’s coming man!
I like watching these videos
Glad you enjoy them!
Big gar! is this the trinity or brazos? looks a little to clean to be the brazos haha
It's a secret 🤫 but it's one of the 2!
3:39 looked like you set the hook in a tee. 😮
It felt like it!!! He picked up speed right when I set so he was going full steam. Make for a great hook set
i used my 3.5lb test curve 12 ft carp rods when i caught my first one
New to gar fishing. Could i use a regular spinreel or one with anti-reverse?

is there a way to increase hookup ratio most of the bites i get i just rip the bait out of the fishes mouth
If your pulling it out it out of their mouths I would try either letting them run a little longer or downsize your baits.

Based on the way the the line moves how can i tell if i have a gar or turtle
@@intropeforthefirstime9780 you can’t. It’s always a guess
what size rod?
Since I mostly fish rivers I stick the 7’ heavy or medium heavy rods. Works for gar and catfish
