Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This RUclips channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video. Спорт
Fancy seeing you here...
Indeed, thanks for the video!
Love your videos!
Hi Rick , Come on Europe for the win
Morning from Brooklyn 😊
Iya ricky boi
I have my first university exam in two hours, and I’m spending my time studying where it counts. ⛳️
The real exam is the exam of life
-Jordan Peterson (maybe)
good luck!
Mate, you will forget about that exam as soon as you walk out but you'll never forget flushing an iron and spinning it back onto the green...all the best.
my exam is in 3 hours, study is important
I would love to see a video where Rick takes an absolute novice and coaches him. A before and after game to see the difference
That's a good series to pitch. I may not be Rick's biggest fan, but there's no doubting he's an excellent teacher capable of making the most difficult movements/skills etc., relatable and relevant to most, if not all, amateurs.
I volunteer as tribute
Please let it be me
This is a great idea.
I volunteer as tribute!
Can’t stress enough how useful those bump and runs are around the green, I used to use 56 or 60 and was so inconsistent. Now just the reliable bump and run has saved me many a time 👍🏻
i love doing the bump and run with my 60 degree wedge. i just align it with my right foot and it’s super consistent
I only chip for loft when there's a steep rise or drop, or rough in my path, or trying to clear a bunker, i.e., when I have to.
My quick ShotScope (watch) math is as follows. They actually tracked user data and wrote a white paper about using less loft and be open to a variety of clubs.
1512 shots from within 50 yards this year.
%%%%
0.9% Hybrid through 7 iron (never chipped a 7 iron)
2.7% 8 iron
0.7% 9 iron
15.1% PW (42-46)
8.6% GW (48-52)
19.6% SW (52-54)
27.9% LW (58 to 64)
24.5% Putter
This breakdown changes when we get to that 25 yards and in chipping situation that Rick is featuring. My putter usage increases dramatically (If you can putt it, putt it.) as I’m terrified of the horrors he illustrated.
A nice big chipping green area that isn’t flat as a pancake obviously helps as firing away chips with multiple clubs paints a nice visual.
It does seem most playing partners grab the lob wedge even when on the fringe. My guess is it’s a comfort level thing which is understandable.
I think the issue with the 56/60 is that most people only play one shot with them, the hardest shot, the pure chip...and because it's such an easy shot to mishit, players lose their confidence in the 56/60, so they alligator arm it or give up on the shot before contact. Thus duffing and losing more confidence.
Tying into ricks tip 3, you need to read the green and lie, and similarly, create a plan with clubs at hand. If you know how to play 2 or 3 shots with each your Gw, Sw and Lw, youre much better suited to not duff it. It'll help far more in the long run as the confidence in your wedges grow, and you develop shots for any kind of lie and situation.
Now, I'm just a 11-13 HDCP golfer so this could be BS, but playing around and experimenting with my wedges so vastly improved my short game I can't bear to hit irons or putters from just off the green. I'm more likely to chip from the green than to putt from off at this point.
Question: what do I do when there isn’t that much green to work with like there was in his video?
The good ol' bump n run is EVERYTHING!! Can't tell you how many times I've cussed the game of golf by unknowingly using my 56 outside the green. Simple bump n run has definitely changed my game
Rick, I've been watching you for sometime now around 2-3 years. I've played my best 9 holes with 4 family members as witnesses and shot my first 35 (par 36) at 29 years old. No mulligans or anything. Surely you had a hand in that so I thank you for your knowledge! Cheers from Wisconsin.
I also live in Wisco, am a fan of Rick and play OSRS…. We are on very similar journeys 😂
@@07googs52 look at that, I'm from WI too, we got the whole gang here
@@fizz2729 aye northern Wis here I'm 29 as well to boot
Hey! Wisconsin and 29 too! Not playing par yet though...
This really spoke to me! Very guilty of taking the lob out near the green. Also going to do the swings you displayed at the end. As someone who is very stiff from weight lifting that is a must for me!
Using less loft around the greens is probably saving me 5+ strokes a round. % of up and downs has greatly increased.
What should I do when there is hardly any green to work with like there is in his example?
@@andrewswickard5322 plenty of room in that scenario to lightly hit a 9 iron like a putter and let it roll to the pin.
Using an 8i instead of a wedge has saved me so many times! Great tip. And the warm up tips are much needed. I almost never get a chance to do anything more stretch a little
First person to like this video....ha love Rick so much - he has brought my game from 105 to a 94 round in 2 months! Thank you!
Same here literally 👍
120's to 90's..✌️
He's helped you but you're the one who did it. Give yourself some of the credit for improving.
If I could find time to get to the course, that would make my game immeasurably better.
1. 0:25 - Clean grooves on clubs
2. 1:20 - Clean the ball on the green before putting
3. 2:07 - Check to read shots from around the green not just on the green
4. 4:09 - Don’t use too much loft for chipping around the greens (pitch wedge - 6 iron)
5. 5:39 - Warm up before the round
🙏
No Practice!? No Hardwork!? No Dedication!? Rick you crazy son of a gun you have me SOLD!!!
As a new golfer, the tip regarding not using the lob wedge to chip feels like a godsend. Thank you Rick!
listen to him he's right. I'm like a mid 80's to low 90's golfer. I stopped using the lob wedge and I score much more consistently in the mid 80's and sometimes even the low 80's. I rarely use it unless I'm in the bunker.
I knew all these tips, but it was a great refresher. It’s the little things that may help you and these things are in your control. Thanks Rick!
Rick, I just discovered your channel and honestly, your content is so amazing! Since last week, I spent every night watching your videos and I cant wait to practice next summer and try to improve my game. My best round is 96 and I really want to get to the next level. Thank you for sharing all these useful tips!
Love to see an episode where a subscriber is picked at random to play against.
.Rick goes to there local course
.talks us through the subscribers bag

.says how he or she can improve
Hi Rick, amazing as it seems and the fact that we actually all know these tips. I guarantee that most of us don't do them religiously if at all so thanks for the reminder. I am playing Friday for the 1st time in a year and I have used your stop hooking videos and now this one so we shall see???
Thanks for the tips Rick! I shot 89 today after watching this video which beats my previous best of 98. Also got my first birdie!!
Great video. I was happy to see that I do the first 3 regularly, getting used to doing #4 regularly, warm up with 7 iron ( first hole is very important for me for confidence) and I try to hit it the best I can.
I just wanted to say thank you for your videos and your passion for golf. It inspired me to pick up my clubs today, which I haven’t touched for 12 years due to a back injury. Shot 50 for 9 holes. Put some of your short game teaching to work and it payed off. Thanks again.
Thanks Rick! I'm down to a 9 handicap this season. I owe alot of it to these videos! Cheers mate!🍻
Excellent
I am the golfer that hates cleaning clubs, cleaning balls, and taking head covers on and off throughout a round- but they are so essential to playing well. I actually had to go and buy head covers off Ebay because I got so tired of them being in the bag last year, I threw them away at a golf course.
Now, in part because of Rick Shiels and probably just some maturation and being more in the moment- I appreciate it more.
Started doing all these things begging of this year and now I have lowered my handicap from -20 to -12. Thanks rick. Also the anti slice vids helped lower that as well.
75% of my golf league watches Ricks videos. I hear a lot of “well Rick said this” or “Rick said that” - Thanks from Michigan!
I'm in Michigan too. Where you based?
GR here 👊🏼

I started using my 4 hybrid around the greens months ago after seeing another of Rick’s videos. The amount of times I get it within a dustbin lid of the hole is unbelievable.
the bump and run has been a huge part of my game since i first saw this. it's genuinely awesome
Thanks so much for the brush up on simple tips which we all know but all too often forget. Great content as always Rick!
I've been practicing loads lately, and i actually have completely forgotten about warming up with 2 clubs. When i was younger i used to do that every single game and lately I haven't done it at all. I think i'm gonna be going back to giving that a shot when i don't have time for a range warmup, thanks Rick!
I’ll be focusing on the warmer start tomorrow morning! Thank you!
Rick, great video! Usually these ‘5 simple tips’ in any category include maybe 1 useful tip but all 5 of these are good and well considered! Keep up the good work!
Absolute gems. It's the little things that can make a huge difference.
Rick, #4 was the reason I started using a chipper. Thanks also for that older video explaining how a chipper might improve your game. It has!
Another set of simple tips. that even long time golfers often forget well done thanks for keeping me entertained
Since driving ranges are few and very far between in my area, that warm up drill at the end will be very helpful. Will give it a go, the next round of golf I play on Saturday
I enjoy all your videos, so many time it is the simple things that make a difference. I watched your videos for a year! You have helped my golf games tremendously! Thanks so much.you have made a difference 😎🍍🍍
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!!!! thanks to your tips and tricks I've shot my best rounds ever!!! 2 weeks ago i set my record at +19 for 18.. last week i shot +18 for 18, thank you!!! thats been a goal of mine for years
This channel helped me get my first ever Par, not once, but twice in a single round. Instant subscribed
Great tips Rick,
My grandad always told me to use a variety of clubs around the green, he was a master in the short game 🤩👍🏼
I really enjoy your tips videos, quick and to the point so I can get out and practice!
Great advice Rick. I always do the two club routine and keep them clean.
Thanks for the great reminder, Rick! I’m very guilty of skipping steps 1-3, especially! Now that I got a new putter, I will be extra cognizant to make sure my golf ball is clean!
Great video AGAIN!!! Thanks. Actually picked this little fella up on Amazon week or so ago. Game changer…. Skinny Golf Stixpick - 4 in 1 Divot Repair Tool - Golf Club Scrub Brush - Magnetic Ball Marker - Groove Cleaner Pick - Ultimate Golf Accessory Tool
Thanks for the tips, simple to do and also gives a more professional feel to a round so more respect to your shots.
Good basics, been doing them all for decades. What gets me about keeping the clubs clean is that some of us don’t always play on tight fairways, so when you take a practice swing the club gets dirty. Maybe I have OCD.
Super grateful for this, Rick. Much needed.
Rick,
Thank you kindly for all your golf tips and videos. I enjoy your information and way it is presented. Have benefited from your videos and advice in some many ways but recently ( last 3 months) have been struggling with a shank that has led to lose confidence in my golf game. From a 10 hc to a 20+. It is frustrating but hoping will get better. Thank for all you do for the golfing community. Best always, Sergio
As a relatively experienced golfer, I didn't think that I'd learn from this video and I wouldn't say that this is anything new to me but you have highlighted the importance of each of these aspects, so I will now be cleaning my clubs etc. more
I am going to test those chipping tips out tomorrow, thanks, Rick!
Ive never played so much golf as I have this year. Sometimes it starts with a Rick Shiels video before I start looking for tee times.
might be my favorite vid of the year, Rick. this helped me a ton. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips. Love watching your videos.
I’m new to all this golf. Loving your videos. Thanks
I hit my best shot of my newbie golfing last week, it was approximately 225 yards in the ruff , hit my hi breed 8 inches from the hole for my first birdie in 8 golf trips. To boot I had my 1st and 2nd birdie ever on the same outing! I’m hooked, thanks for all your advice Rick, it’s hard to apply at the coarse being a new golfer, but lots of fun watching and hope it will help some sunny day!
Great tips! I’m interested in #5 for my next range sesh and outing.
Rick… You are the best mentor for me. You have the ability to describe hard things very easily. That’s really important. Thank You for everything.

Hopefully You can visit Niitvälja or EGCC in Estonia.
I’ve been using that 9-iron bump and run tip since I saw it another one of your videos and it’s solid gold. What’s also nifty is because it’s a putting stroke, you can adjust the lean of the shaft to get different lofts without changing your club, your stance, or your swing.
...that's actually not a great way to chip and every time I see someone who proclaims they do something similar to great effect, they usually have a really bad short game. Your attack loft should be controlled by your setup/ball position, not some funky hand positioning.
I have the chipping yips and set up /ball position is irrelevant. It's a disconnect between the brain and the hands that can't be overcome by mechanics alone . Sad but true.
Awesome video as always Rick! Have been loving your content as I've gotten back into golf recently.
The orange whip has been my favorite warm up device ever!
i love the 2 handed club practice!
Haven't missed a single Rick Shiels video in yearssss. Love your content.
Love these tips! Thanks Rick
Great tips that I will be introducing! Especially the last one of using a low loft club. A lot safer!
Thanks Rick, you have just described my game. Great advice, worth a subs.
Great advice well worth following. Thanks.
Wish RUclips had a love button! Thanks Rick!
Last one is definitely my favorite one!! So simple but I never thought of it. Maybe this will get rid of me needing a few holes to get the body going.
Love your videos Rick keep up the amazing work!! Thank you
I started playing golf in April/May and I’m finally in the high 90’s after trying to break that 100 score. My driver has come on leaps and bounds thanks to you and I’m looking at upgrading. I’ve had my eyes set on the Ping g425 MAX and would love to win it in this competition! Would also love to see a few more ‘how I play golf’ videos. Top Stuff Rick 🏌🏽⛳️
My dude Rick!! man, thanks for these great tips. Since I stopped using my high lofted clubs around the green, I've cut down strokes significantly. Thanks from Napa, Ca
Great tips. Thanks Rick.
Rick, best vid you have ever done.
Golf is simple if you treat it with respect 🥰
Excellent video. I have a circular weighted “doughnut” that fits down the handle of my clubs and I add it to my club for those warm up swings. Cost about $6 US and easily goes in a compartment of your bag.
Great video, Rick. So practical.
This has just been some absolutely amazing bit of information 👌👏 I've been using my 60 degree loads in the situation you described! Awesome content 👌
I struggle with the bump and run, I’ve tried it so many times after watching your videos, but for me, the gap wedge is the club for me around the green. Thanks for all the videos!
Great tips. Thanks Rick
Again brilliant basic information to greatly improve a game.
Love this thank you so much
Great videos. You have helped me so much
This is great. Love the chipping tips. Thanks!
Agree good simple advice Rick
Great video Rick. Quite a few things here most of us take for granted or don't think about
Thank you coach!!!
Now this is more like it. Great helpful tips and video
helped A LOT thanks
love those last too tips !
Totally agree with the 2 club swing. I used to play cricket and warmed up with 2 bats. Took that into golf and that 1st swing on the 1st tee feels effortless.
Usable and easy to try... thanks.
I use my lob wedge around the greens all the time. I have practiced with this club often and have gotten really good using it around the greens. I have saved so many shots with this club and I feel more confident using my lob wedge than any other club around the green. I feel it personal preference to what club golfers use around the green. And my club of choice will always be my lob wedge. Great tips in this video Rick! I see way to many golfers playing with dirty clubs and this annoys me. I cant stand to have my club dirty at all before, during and after my round. I always clean them when I play and clean them after. And cleaning your golf ball is super important as well. I clean my ball often too. This way I get a more truer roll from it. Well thank you again for these simple tips to help golfers out. Keep the great videos coming and happy golfing to you!
Same. Just using my 60 wedge and have smashed scrambling this year.
Love this video. Great as always Rick
Great video! Thanks again.
Bump and run is so critical for mid to high handicaps to learn. Practicing like 7 8 9i with the same exact putting swing and seeing how they roll out differently is incredibly useful.
Luvely video again Rick! ⛳️🏌️♂️
Great advice on the latter ones. I need to chip more with my less lofted clubs.
The advice is great...
That and your accent kept me watching! 😀
Great tips, cheers Rick.
Simple, but crucial. I like it!!!
Rick Shiels your attire is unmatched, look good play good!
Anything around the green now, I just stand closer to the ball, close the face slightly, and use a putting stroke. Done wonders for my scores. Always confident standing over those shots now!
