Kickdown Cable Install

  • Shown here on a 1979 Z28 Camaro with a TH350 transmission. Install is relatively easy but very important for your car to run optimally. Your kickdown cable should have a springiness to it so you know it is interacting with the transmission properly. Shown is an OE replace, universal will require a bit more consideration but should be a similar enough install.

    The dentent cable is only for downshift, not as you mentioned; higher gear and gear change in general; this is control by vacuum on a TH350

    Great video very much knowledge I learned from this really helped out. It was also well explained. I am currently working on my project 1972K5 blazer at the moment with the typical same kickdown cable and it’s my first time doing a kickdown cable in this video, actually helped out a lot 💯 I’m very glad I watched this

    I think it’s for downshifting when In open throttle in a high gear, should tell the trans to down shift

    I've always set it all full throttle, been doing it for years never had an issue.

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  3 месяца назад

      So if you have it absolutely maxed at full throttle and set it how does it engage? It's going to be close to full throttle so we might be saying the same thing but it needs to be able to pull to function so it's going to be slightly back otherwise it's never actually going to do anything but dangle there.

    • @cartsquads47
      @cartsquads47 3 месяца назад

      @@picklesgarage when its full throttle it's completely engaged all the way at it's end of the pull. It actually starts engaging before full. Thats how it still functions. And most people don't drive at full throttle lol. When the throttle is maxed out the pull is maxed out.

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  3 месяца назад

      @cartsquads47 Yeah exactly then we are actually saying the same thing. Because it has that actual give so you are setting it while it's engaged I was talking about setting it right at the point before it starts to engage. Which means you and I would be setting it at the same point just two different ways. Point is for it to kick on right around max throttle so the trans knows you're giving it the boot

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  2 года назад

      If you are very fortunate it could be the linkage I would go underneath on the driver side and have someone you trust A LOT can have their foot on the break and shift to see if it's actually moving it far enough to engage otherwise might just need a Trans rebuild, could be around 2k. Other easy fix is just making sure you have enough transmission fluid, it needs to be measured when hot, sounds obvious I know but if someone changed the dipstick it could read incorrectly and low transmission fluid messes with the drive

    Are you supposed to have a gap between the TV stud and the slot in the cable end?

    • @manuelcastillo0907
      @manuelcastillo0907 Год назад

      Yes, the acceleration cable pulls back and causes kickdown tab to pullforward pulling the cable with it and engages the shifting

    • @mikethompson2007
      @mikethompson2007 Год назад

      I understand the linkage arrangement...my question is on the adjustment.

    • @manuelcastillo0907
      @manuelcastillo0907 Год назад

      @@mikethompson2007yes so it doesn’t shift too soon, by the time the stud reaches the the end of the cable end it should be wot and thats what you want.

    So will this make the car not shift at all?

    • @picklesgarage
      @picklesgarage  7 месяцев назад

      So depending on the transmission most of that is handled with fluid hydraulics or sensors. You'll notice with the adjustment the kickdown is only engaged when the throttle is more or less wide open. So yes a bad or failing kickdown cable can affect the cars ability to downshift when necessary and give you poor acceleration when you step on it while already at speed. However if you are having issues shifting at all at any speed and acceleration that's more likely a failing transmission or extremely low on fluid.

    Where did you buy that exact one. I’m putting a new one in my 80 Z28 and every time I get one it’s the wrong one. These are coming from the Auto Parts stores out here and even one from the internet. I’m getting frustrated.

      I tried finding and email to confirm exactly where I got it with no luck which makes me think I got it at the only place I go in person, autozone. I just looked up kickdown cable TH350 and found the same one for both autozone and classic industries. They are adjustable to a degree, but curious on what has been wrong on the one they are selling you did they look completely different or is it the length or connection?
