    Glad this made it to you already! I just did it in a blind trio on Friday with Lot 40 12 Year CS and Knob Creek CS, and it held it's own.

    • @canadianwhiskysmith6453
      @canadianwhiskysmith6453 4 года назад +1

      All three had the Rye dill notes, but the thing that surprised me were the dark cherry notes. I only expected that to come through on the Knob Creek, because they're the only one that I know for sure uses virgin oak.
      I don't remember making specific guesses on my first pass, but my friends said I picked them out exactly...but after sitting with them for a minute or two, my official guesses were off.
      Lot 40 12 YO CS 55%
      Knob Creek CS 59.8%
      Alberta Premium CS 65.1%
      Considering the range of proofs, the Alberta Premium didn't stand out as exceedingly hot. The Knob Creek was the softest, though, and also had the punchiest flavours.
      All three were similar and yet each was distinctive. I love them all, but for very different reasons.

    It's also notable that Alberta specifically has some particularly weird weather, especially in Calgary. Calgary frequently gets hit with a "Chinook" which can bring the temperature up 10-20 °C within the span of 8-12 hrs.
    I personally don't know if that's too rapid of a temperature change too actually influence the taste. Calgary also has a notably dry winter, which corrects in the summer time.

    Alberta Premium is a Beam Suntory brand and I have yet to find it down here in the USA. I picked it up a couple times at the Duty Free when crossing the border in Ontario. In fact, it is cheaper when going into Canada than when going into the USA. A couple years ago, I picked up a 1.75 handle of Alberta Premium at duty free, it was about $15, an insanely cheap price. It makes a really great Manhattan as you have the spice from the whisky, the sweet from vermouth, and the Orange bitters. It’s really a perfect cocktail.

    Hey you glorious bastards! The misses and I were enjoying a drink or two of Ardbeg 10 and saw this video so we needed to bring out the Alberta Premium Cask strength to see if we were tasting what you Gents were tasting! Now that was a glorious experience! We know that you should increase in ABV as you go and drink a peated whisky last... however, that CS Alberta Premium was an amazing match for the Ardbeg 10. Softened the heat of the higher proof and brought out more floral/fruit notes in the Alberta, while the Ardbeg lost the honey sweet caramel and got more of a buttery smooth smoke sweetness.
    Would love to see a video of you guys pairing whisk(e)ys that balance and bring out the best in each other.
    Keep up the great work fellas!

      I couldn't help but lift the glass to my lips, hoping at first I tasted a pear.
      Butterscotch, cream and oak if you dare.
      When up on the rooftop there rose such a clatter, I sprang from my den to see what was the matter.
      What should I spy with my whiskey enhanced eye?
      But a large bottle of bourbon, no wait, it's a Rye!
      Standing along 8 tiny Daniels, was a side pony tail Rex and a cute cocker spaniel
      I heard him call out by name "on Macallan, on Talisker, on Laphroaig, and Bowmore.
      "on Ardbeg, on Rosebank, on Springbank and Dalmore!"
      "Most of all on my favorite the Redbreast Twelve, you are always so swell!
      When out from the sleigh, there appeared an Emma, "C'mon you boys, I'm the designated Driva"
      I heard them exclaim as they drank off the cam,
      "Merry Christmas to all! And to all your favorite dram!"

    I've read Alberta Distillers Ltd. intentionally crafts the standard Alberta Premium to not taste like a rye, even though it is 100% rye grain.
    For me, the Cask Strength edition contains all the rye spice. It is a completely different animal than the stock offering.
    When I was young, I didn't like beer (still don't) and I only tolerated wine. Then I discovered hi-balls and my spirit-ual journey began.
    Alberta Premium was a big part of that. I could get a mickey of AP and a litre of Coke, and drink all weekend with my friends.
    I still keep a bottle of the standard around for friends who want a mixed drink.
    But the Cask Strength edition? It's a grown-up bottle for a grown-up me 😊

    I've been watching these for a while and decided over the weekend to get my first whiskey, having virtually no Idea what my whiskey tastes are, I decided to find something that holds tastes in other things that I know I enjoy. I settled on a Bird Dog Hot Cinnamon flavored whiskey, mostly because it was comparatively cheap. When I tasted it, I enjoyed what hit first, being similar to Hot Tamales, but there was an incredibly strong sour aftertaste that totally screwed the flavor over. While at first, I was a little discouraged, I decided I would continue searching the different whiskeys I have available until I find a flavor profile I enjoy.

    • @elixwhitetail
      @elixwhitetail 4 года назад +2

      If you've watched the channel for a while, you'll know that everything I'm about to say is meant in good faith and I'm not trying to tell you that the way you're enjoying spirits is wrong, because the best stuff is what you like to drink and how you like to drink it. BUT I'm going to suggest trying a whiskey that isn't flavoured by additions - a cinnamon-flavoured whiskey is generally meant to be consumed in shots or in cocktails, and you won't really find much of the whiskey's natural taste under the powerful cinnamon. It's okay to enjoy the cinnamon whiskey, of course, but it's going to give you a different experience from a bottle of whiskey that was only distilled, aged, and bottled by itself.
      Because you may end up spending hundreds of dollars buying bottles of whiskey you don't like before you even know what it is that you like, you might be better off going to a well-appointed bar or a full-on whiskey bar and sampling from different bottles. You can find out very quickly that you do/do not like a given style of whiskey by trying out two glasses of different bottles at a bar, and that saves you buying two full bottles to find out the same thing at home. If you haven't gone over to the Whiskey Tribe channel that runs parallel to the Whiskey Vault reviews, I suggest having a look because they've got tons of good information for newcomers to whiskey.

    • @harleyretherford6329
      @harleyretherford6329 4 года назад +2

      @@elixwhitetail I understand this yes, but I live near a small town, unfortunately. I was over-eager to try my first whiskey and realized it was flavored after I purchased it. As far as I know, the few bars where I live do not have a large amount of variety, as they're terribly large, not does our population allow for enough of an income to get a lot, but I may be wrong. I intend to check them out after spring hits. I don't think i have to worry about overspending on whiskey either, as the liquor stores most expensive was about eighty dollars. Still yet, thank you for the advice.
      I chilled the whiskey and tried it again, with it cold, it buried the sour flavor so it simply started as liquid hot tamales, not anything too special but something I can enjoy in the colder seasons, along with some hot cider. Anyhow, I intend to look far more closely and carefully next time.

    • @elixwhitetail
      @elixwhitetail 4 года назад

      @@harleyretherford6329 It's not an ideal situation but it sounds like you're making the best of it! The bars around me don't have a wide selection on the shelves (there's a whisky bar in town but I haven't been yet), but the liquor store shelves have TONS of options, so I sort of have the opposite problem; I have the luxury and pain of too many choices and it's not legal to give tasting samples in liquor stores here (except for scheduled tasting events where one single thing is being demoed and poured, and those don't happen often) so I face a wall of bottles that're largely mysteries to me except for any tasting notes given on the packaging and info I find from the Internet myself.
      Your selection may not be good but once you learn what everything on a label does (and doesn't) mean, you can start to make informed choices using the options available to you to at least work out what sorts of whiskies you like -- you could try a Scotch, if they have any, and then compare it to an Irish triple-distilled whisky like Jameson (unless they somehow don't even have Jameson in your area), and if you like the Jameson more you may prefer Irish over Scotch in broad terms. It's not as exciting and efficient as going to a New York City whisky bar where they've got a billion bottles, but you can make it work. There's a video on the Whiskey Tribe channel about terms on labels and when they do or do not mean anything that's worth watching. Best of luck in your whiskey journey!

    Despite the antiquated historical reason behind the "Rye" name in Canada, only Highwood Distillery uses the "Rye" designation on the label when there is no or little Rye in the bottle. I will not buy another bottle of Whisky from that distillery until they drop it.
    Bulleit is piss compared to Alberta Rye, just saying.

      Can you get Shelter Point? Their distribution is small but they're pretty legit. However, interestingly, they don't label their products "Canadian Whisky" with a capital C capital W. Instead it's things like "Artisanal single malt", and I suspect this is because the legal definition of Canadian Whisky includes a line about how it must represent the general character and experience of Canadian whisky blabla and there is NO precedent or definition for what that means.

      @@robinsharkey6658 Shelter Point CS is the first bottle of theirs I tasted and WOW. I never knew I wanted sweet pine candy and now I really want sweet pine candy.
      I have an unopened bottle of Montfort District Lot 141 2018 edition that is waiting until I can buy a bottle of the 2017 edition off the shelf of my local where I found them. I want to get the single malt and the Smoke Point expressions, as well as the double barrel for completion's sake, but I'm really interested in doing an A/B with their terroir release. I was excited when I discovered I could buy the 2018 nearby and I was even more excited to find that the next liquor store up the highway had the 2017.
      I think I'm going to make my family take me on a tour to their distillery in the Spring for my birthday, haha.
