So, just joined the Tribe on patreon, been watching like 4 or 5 videos a day last couple months and I have to say, I love it. You’ve turned me from a guy who casually and occasionally enjoyed a glass of whisk(e)y to a full on nerd! Especially a big thanks for turning me on to Monkey Shoulder and Angel’s Envy finished Rye, two of my new absolute favorites.
So, I'd message you guys directly, but I'm too lazy to figure out how. I've noticed in the last few videos that the audio level is a bit too high, and Rex's voice gets distorted (clippy) when he belts out the "magnificent bastard".
Question for you fine sirs: What causes the pine/dusty barn notes you guys find in many craft whiskeys? I've had a lot of craft products, but hadn't gotten the pine/dusty barn notes until this past week. The bourbon was MGP sourced, but the nose was overpowered by that dusty/musty hay note, and the rye was more piney than their gin. The bourbon was alright, but I couldn't get past the pine in the rye. I asked how young it was and didn't get a straight answer, and young whiskey was my guess. They also use only 53 gallon barrels, from a cooperage somewhere in Missouri. Thanks in advance! P.S.: Love that one of the first things anyone said to Rex in Ireland was calling him the Big Lebowski. Cheers!

I used to watch the whiskey vault back when they were called wizard academy before they became "mainstream". Now, it's okay but they remind me of Coldplay or U2.
I am a child....there is so much going on in the magnificent bastard clip - eagle, bear, fire, neon, cookie, biscuit, swords, swinging glencairn...that I just today realized the big blank bottle in the middle is ECBP.
Off topic question, i recently tried my first non-well known whisky, aaand i dont overly enjoy whisky in general, but i tried lagavulin and wanted to ask if you (or any of the tribe ) can recommend any similar or even more intense ilsay's
I was in Texas last week and jumped at the chance to pick up a bottle of a local bourbon. I got this Cotton Hollow Texas 4-year bourbon, and while I'm not much for hyperbole, I can confidently say it was my least favorite bourbon I've ever tried. There was absolutely no nose, no sweetness, no spice, no finish, nothing interesting whatsoever. It had this weird briny note and was quite astringent. It tasted like shower cleaner smells. I guess that'll teach me for venturing beyond Kentucky.
My mind remains un-blown upon hearing that Rex has not ever cleaned a still.
First comment ever: Oamaruvian is in my top 10 all time faves. Not for everyone but glad to see you guys liked it! Benchmark for wine finished whisky.
