Today we taste and review Sunken Bobber Bourbon, Middle West Straight Wheated Bourbon, Studio Distilling Rye Malt, Studio Distilling Bourbon, Spring Mill Bourbon, and Sycamore Ohio Bourbon.
Rex... your hair looks like you got out of the shower and couldn't decide on who's hairstyle to go with -- Barry Gibb from the mid 70's or Yahoo Serious from "Young Einstein"... so you chose both.
Oh no you didn't with the Yahoo Serious reference!! Mah Man, Mah Man. The first thing that came to mind with Rex's hair do was Buffalo Bill from Silence Of The Lambs. LMAO
I saw the bottle of Middle West Spirits bourbon and thought it was finally my time to get MBed......low and behold, it was another MB who donated the same bottle. I am glad you guys enjoyed the Ohio spirits though!
I looked up the Studio Rye and this is from their page... RYE MALT WHISKEY Rye malt brings a smooth spiciness while corn adds the right amount of engaging sweetness. The addition of smoked barley and roasted rye delivers a smooth, toasted finish with a note of dark chocolate. It's amazing how "spot on" you were with notes without having looked it up.
I love this episode. Three whiskeys from Minnesota!!! The tasting notes make me want to try all three of them. I've heard that Studio Distilling also uses larger barrels or is moving to using larger barrels.
Found your channel recently after I tried Glenfiddich 12 for the 1st time. Since then I've collected Glenfiddich 12, Hibiki Harmony, Bulleit Bourbon, and Caol Ila 12. Loving everyone of them so far. Thinking of trying Bruichladdich Classic laddie next. Daniel you look like turbo Yoda from mighty car mods. Anyone ever tell you that? Maybe we should call you the Whisk(e)y Yoda 🤣.
Rex: You are talking about the fruit of the Osage Orange trees. Growing up in Kansas, we called them “hedge apples”. Farmers grew these trees as dense hedges to serve as natural fencing. They served as habitat for pheasant and quail which we hunted by flushing them from the hedges. Of course we routinely threw the hedge apples at each other, ending up sticky with the sap from the fruit. Haven't thought of those damned things for years.
I live in Ohio and have never heard of the Sycamore Bourbon. That Middle West Straight Wheated Bourbon is really good though. Some of Middle West's other products can be hit-or-miss, but they struck gold with that Wheated! Great reviews fellas!
0:26 to 0:30 looking at Rex's hair with no explanation........ literally made me pause the video and tilt my head to the side like a dog hearing a weird sound!
Patience and precision really matters in coffee, being a barista i know it seems tedious to many people who just want caffeine but different strokes for different folks. In the end it will always taste better and it is so worth it! And I agree with Rex, the coffee he had was most likely South American and very possibly could have been El Salvador, Santa Ana, Guatemala, or Peru.
Also bought some Spring Mill a year or two ago not knowing it was something hard to find, glad I've had it and will try and find it again. Shit was like drinking McDonald's sweet tea that's just a wee bit sour. Saved the bottle and use it to keep water cool on hikes. It carried over some of that bourbon flavor for months lol
Are there different grades of barrel quality? (Not talking about char level) maybe the big companies are getting the prime quality barrels and craft distillers are getting "seconds" and there's a defect in the wood that's giving off that nose? Could it be the barley choice 6 row vs 2 row? 6 row has more enzymes for conversion but is harsher in flavor.
I was planning on sending you some of the Studio Distilling whisky, until Shelly told me yesterday that you had already reviewed it It is a rye malt by the way, and a mix with some chocolate rye.
i just turnt 40..(Saturday) a thunderstorm woke me up so, as i took a new job this week what better thing to do than catch up on the channel...and continue drinking(birthday weekend). i have 4 new whiskeys in the house because, first day on the job i sought out the liquor store in the new town and bought 2 expressions of backbone or bonesnapper(whatever). then at the end of the week i acutely got a pay check for 2 days...MORE WHISKEY. i went back and got the single bottles of whipper snapper and auchentoshan american oak... i think i'm rambling
When you buy one of his bottles at the distillery, Rick will engrave it for you. Also, that's one of the really young batches of Sunken Bobber, I think. Waiting to see what the 4 year aged works out to be.
Wondering if you guys go back to some of the whiskies you’ve reviewed and found they’ve improved or changed. See a lot of neck pours ( I know you have limited time) but wonder if you’re missing out a little bit when initially tasting?
Daniel. I want to know more about this smell you don't like. I'm not sure I've had it. And not sure if I want to have it after hearing you talk about it. I have had one whiskey that may be what you're talking about. Copper Fox. To me it taste like tree sap. Is that kind of what you're describing? I'm wondering if that could be wood for the barrel that isn't properly seasoned. What are your thoughts?
Could you guys review the Glengoyne cask strength please? Interested to hear what you think. I live ten mins from the glengoyne distillery so this leads me to be somewhat biased towards it. Nice to hear a impartial point of view. Cheers guys
I remember seeing those weird spiked tree nut things, I swear they were Chestnut but I never bothered to figure it out when I was a kid unsurprisingly. I also suddenly want to hear Rex try to speak in Japanese after he started saying "Ohio". :P
3:16 The word you're looking for is "Chestnut". The seedpods from Chestnut trees are spiky and green when they fall and holy hell do they hurt at close range.
I think "Rex's" hair might be a wig and that wasn't actually Rex. The other subtle clue: at about 20:32, Daniel pours himself an additional drink of whiskey (Andalusia Stryker?) and "Rex" makes no attempt to be poured some. I think something odd might be afoot.
ANCIENT ASTRONAUT THEORISTS..this whiskey is so complex it far surpasses there ability to produce ..were they influenced by the ancient whiskey gods ..was there human sacrifice involved and were did they go ....some say yes ...
Grabbed that Sycamore on an impulse, had a tag that said made in ohio (my state). Was hoping something important that could be a highly desirable distill with historic back story. That's a swing and a miss. Well at least it's another chapter in the local section of my whiskey collection smh
Rex, in honor of the re-release of Aladdin, you got your hair done? PS: Those green spike ball seed pods come from sugar gum trees (well at least in my area).
I recently tried Balcones Single malt and I noticed the first pour from the bottle tasted different from subsequent pours, I noticed a similar thing with other bottles as well. Has anyone else found this to be true? Do you account for this when reviewing a newly opened bottle?
I have a request for Chad to make a clip show of Daniel saying "I'm not a rye guy but...". I've counted at least 10 over the years I've been watching you guys. It's time you come to a realization that you are a rye guy.
Rex... looking a little like ancient alien astronauts proponent Giorgio Tsoukalos... THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!
I am not saying this unique whisky was bottled by Aliens, but...
Man, the journey is never ending. Never heard of any of these. A melon-heavy bourbon. Want.
Aqvavitae give Woody Creek Bourbon a try. The only bourbon I’ve had so far that was distinctly melon.
Roy, thanks for the email back. Hope all is well across the pond.
That's the best part about whiskey - there are endless flavors to explore
Middlewest is made in Columbus Ohio. Widely available here, I’m still surprised they haven’t gone Nationwide. Very good bourbon!
"Your bitter." I Lost my dram
"Are my notes not on point? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?" -Raccoon Hair Rex.
I went to the Middle West Distillery and tried that Bourbon, it's quite exceptional and that distillery makes great vodkas as well!
At 5:46 The Spirit Monk[e]y wonders what happened to that banana.
The Spirit Monk[e]y is asking for a friend.
I believe you might be the only one that noticed my banana easter egg. Makes sense I guess. - C
@@WhiskeyVault The Spirit Monk[e]y is pleased.
"like a neutered Vegas for old people" Love it!
Rex... your hair looks like you got out of the shower and couldn't decide on who's hairstyle to go with -- Barry Gibb from the mid 70's or Yahoo Serious from "Young Einstein"... so you chose both.
I see a little bit of Beethoven in there too.
Oh no you didn't with the Yahoo Serious reference!! Mah Man, Mah Man. The first thing that came to mind with Rex's hair do was Buffalo Bill from Silence Of The Lambs. LMAO
Its called "the esteemed gentleman whos just awoken and realized he forget to have whiskey yesyerday"
I don't drink alcohol and I've been watching your vids for a couple days and I'm hooked lol you to guys are to funny lol
I saw the bottle of Middle West Spirits bourbon and thought it was finally my time to get MBed......low and behold, it was another MB who donated the same bottle. I am glad you guys enjoyed the Ohio spirits though!
Rex: Hold my dram. ALIENS stole my whisk(e)y.
1Lawstcawz ; damn it. You beat me to it.
I looked up the Studio Rye and this is from their page...
RYE MALT WHISKEY

It's amazing how "spot on" you were with notes without having looked it up.
Rex, when you talked abut the sea urchin thing, it sounds like you are describing Horse Chestnuts, (Buckeyes).
A sweet gum tree came to mind when he mentioned that
In the westmidlands we call them conker trees
In Oklahoma it is the fruit of the bois d'arc tree commonly called horse apples (!?) or Osage oranges.
I thought of chestnuts when he said that as well, had a tree at my school here in Canada.
Definitely chestnuts
thanks for the middlewest review, its only like 50 miles from me. im gonna do a tour soon to check it out.
I love this episode. Three whiskeys from Minnesota!!! The tasting notes make me want to try all three of them. I've heard that Studio Distilling also uses larger barrels or is moving to using larger barrels.

"I'm in the junior high school library". Words I've never spoken in my entire life.
Danial you sneak!! you poured a different whiskey without Rex knowing..Nice!
Daniel, I guess you forgot your trip to Silver Dollar City in the 80s with us and my parents.
Rex’s hair is magnificent
I grew up going to silver dollar city! Thank you for bringing back those memories!
I live in Ohio and have never heard of the Sycamore Bourbon. That Middle West Straight Wheated Bourbon is really good though. Some of Middle West's other products can be hit-or-miss, but they struck gold with that Wheated! Great reviews fellas!
Love the Sliver Dollar City reference....I used to go there when I was a kid! The smell of the wood they used for EVERYTHING is very distinct....
Also, Isanti is pronounced eye-SAN-tee...where the SAN sounds like san in 'sand'.
0:26 to 0:30 looking at Rex's hair with no explanation........ literally made me pause the video and tilt my head to the side like a dog hearing a weird sound!
Shiloh Store I had to restart the video looking for where it went wild

Sycamore is now called Cincinnati Distillery. I just picked up there single barrel 120 proof to have something local in my collection. We shall see
The jump cut to Rex with mad scientist hair was HI-LARIOUS!!!! Also when he’s “squeezing shit”..... yeahhh buddy you’ve lost it!
Sweet gum balls, rex. From a sweet gum tree
Friday's are quickly turning into "old-barn+ hay + craft"-lets poop on this whiskey day.
I am very interested in the Middle West Straight Wheat Whisky now !
No one noticed those black corks on the Studio distilling bottles? They're cool looking! Shelly, send me a cork! lol I know you're watching this...
Thanks! Come visit :)
@@ShellyWando I'd love to but it's a 1,946 mile trip! lol #cheers
Rex, your hair is especially glorious this day.
Am I the only one who saw the joke in "Jachin Harder" name?
Giggity giggity goo
Careful you might go blind

Jay-kin, like bacon...
Jachin Harder how would you know

ooh I'm gonna have to try those studio releases
what Rex is describing is chestnuts
Just picked up a bottle of the middle west white rye whiskey, not bad definitely has a bite to it.
I remember Silver Dollar City as a kid and it was raining and all you smell is wet wood.
Dark chocolate espresso coffee bean...that's what I get from the Balcones 100 Proof Rye.
The Spirit Monk[e]y shares this observation.
Rex's hair..... Did Daniel tase him?
So much fun at Silver Dollar City as a Kid. Used to go to Kanakuk K1 camp for a summer, and then Silver Dollar City before driving back to Tx.
I have fond memories of Fire in the Hole.
I was planning on sending you some of the Studio Distilling whisky, until Shelly told me yesterday that you had already reviewed it

The Hair had my attention.... Then the face w/ the squeezing of the tea bag close up ..... You scared me Rex!.... You scared me!

Hey Rex the tree that drops the prickly ball is called a sweet gum tree.
You both look like whisky angels
Rex is a sassy boy for this review. i like it.
Rex your hair is cool. Its like a lions mane.
Rex looking like Doc Brown today
When you buy one of his bottles at the distillery, Rick will engrave it for you. Also, that's one of the really young batches of Sunken Bobber, I think. Waiting to see what the 4 year aged works out to be.
15:15 "melanin sweet tea", wtf kind of weird shit is Rex into?
Lol me and rex are rocking the same hair do this morning. That I've worked 40 hours in 3 days and spent the night at a hospital in a chair look.
Daniel, take the family to Silver Dollar City. Well worth it.
He said "I love the melons on this"
Me and the homies would play in the construction site dumpster 😂 and throw old tiles at each other
Wondering if you guys go back to some of the whiskies you’ve reviewed and found they’ve improved or changed. See a lot of neck pours ( I know you have limited time) but wonder if you’re missing out a little bit when initially tasting?
4:04 Daniel "It's a little bitter." Rex " You're Bitter."

Wow Rex that is some real hair you are working there.
I know those pointy sea urchin things! We have them in Tennessee as well!
I remember seeing those weird spiked tree nut things, I swear they were Chestnut but I never bothered to figure it out when I was a kid unsurprisingly. I also suddenly want to hear Rex try to speak in Japanese after he started saying "Ohio". :P

poor rex - i guess your comb broke or your going for the mad whiskey professor look! rock on sir!
Yo! How are the MBs
Rex, I had no idea you like melons so much!
Sooooo, maybe a banana pudding shake? There is a local ice cream spot that I think could make this happen....l0l. CHEERS GUYS!!
I suggest a very heavy metal tribute to titans like a Bruce Dickinson scream as part of a chorus
ANCIENT ASTRONAUT THEORISTS..this whiskey is so complex it far surpasses there ability to produce ..were they influenced by the ancient whiskey gods ..was there human sacrifice involved and were did they go ....some say yes ...
Those spikey brown things are sweet gum balls, and they hurt like hell.
How much would you approximate the whisky vault is worth??

Can confirm. Pinecone wars are ruthless
You guys are the Olympian Gods of Whisk(e)y, as in: roasting Titans is kinda what the Olympian gods did.
Have you guys seen those taste buds flipping berries. Do you think those would effect the whiskey at all?
Drinking crown royal black...pray for me...cheers
The first one is from Minnesota …. Right
This channel is what would have happened if Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage had decided to do a show about spirits.
The spikey green ting from trees are probably chestnuts
That could be, I wondered about sugar gum seed pods.
so, did you like the first one, Or?
Rex, in honor of the re-release of Aladdin, you got your hair done? PS: Those green spike ball seed pods come from sugar gum trees (well at least in my area).
*No, you're not wrong* - Daniel Whittington
Rex, the new do, hardly noticeable
Rex only swoops in for whisky just on the other side of the Daniel.....
Have you guys done a list of all your unicorns?
Sounds like Rex is describing chestnuts.
I recently tried Balcones Single malt and I noticed the first pour from the bottle tasted different from subsequent pours, I noticed a similar thing with other bottles as well. Has anyone else found this to be true? Do you account for this when reviewing a newly opened bottle?
Those green sea urchants Rex was talking about are chest-nuts.

Chestnuts @3:21 - think I might still have some still stuck in my skin 30 years after they hit me!
Thanks puddin 😉
Where can I get that Whiskey Tribe shirt man, it`s AWESOME :D
Slingshots and green chinaberries = hours of fun (and welts) for you and your friends.. just don't shoot an eye out!
Studio rye reminds me of darkness by surly
Was I the only one screaming don't drink the second whisky cause the name's a code for Jaqen H'ghar. The faceless men are after the Whisky Vault!!!
11:53 is the candle lit or no? This is important :D
I say...Daniel 'Rye' Wittington. Cheers 🥂
